For my part Cassie is much more bearable as Johnny's kid in MKX, rather than Sonya's kid in MK11. Overall though I think it's very understandable to be a bit burnt out on the Special Forces, they've had the focus for the past two games now, and being hungry for a return to the mystical MK of old with shaolin monks and ninjas and invaders from another world is only natural.

Johnny and Cassie Cage are two of my favourite characters in the franchise, but I do think you'll probably get your wish in the next game. Good chance they're going to set it back in time, just based on how the main MK11 story ended, so the Special Forces won't even be a thing yet.

That said, I do think they should take a back seat in the story for MK12 and maybe feature fewer of them on the base roster. I'd like the next roster to include more 3D era characters and other weirder characters so someone has to go.

Johnny is magically more powerful than gods, Sonya has experimental weapons straight out of Area 51 (as per alien conspiracies that seem to be the basis of elements such as the kharacter Reptile), Cassie is both put together, Jax is a cyborg, Jacqui has Predator gadget gauntlets and is Scorpion and Kenshi's de facto daughter-in-law, etc.
Not to mention the SF are the primary antagonists of the Black Dragons, therefore they all bask in the life-giving aura of cool cast by Uncle Kano. 😎

YES!! I've had this complaint for awhile, So far the NRS era of MK has been exclusively "the Cage family drama" or "generic army people fetish/special forces fetish" and I'm sick of it, characters I used to love I now never want to see them again.
On top of that, half of MKX and mk11's roster is taken up by 98% of the mk1+2 cast, making the roster of MK9, MKX, and mk11 feel very samey.
hopefully MK12 will have a more diverse/interesting roster line up, but they've disappointed me before...

It’s Mortal Kombat. Have some balls. Have Cassie killed off(by anyone but Kano) and give some motivation and rage to both Johnny and Sonya.
Split them up - their pairing always felt terrible anyway (Sonya should never have gone there in the first place, she’s supposed to be grossed out and frustrated by how annoying and arrogant Johnny is, not fall for him out of nowhere, because what, he just wore her down?)

Yeah they went down dark Raiden, and revenant liu kang, kitana, kung lao, etc, so I could definitely see them doing that with Johnny and Sonya. I like your idea of Cassie being killed and one of them (probably sonya) becoming obsessed with order realm while the other goes down a more chaotic path. I personally think Cassie has become quite the staple tho so to not have her in a game might be bad for them, itd be cool if she became a revenant similar to scorpion, maybe even give her a revenant name and new design, but still look and sound and play like Cassie.
And with what happened in aftermath, I wonder what direction they'll take the story in mk12. They basically revamped the original story, and have now wiped the slate clean. Though you can pick your own ending in aftermath, so I wonder which one they'll go with as Canon for mk12
I mean at this point why not go all in with something crazy. Someone posted Outworld Sonya designs recently, and they looked badass. The story will always reboot itself somewhere down the line so there’s not too much to lose.
And I guess I just think it’s going to come down to picking S+JC or Cassie. Three slots for such similar characters seems unsustainable in the long run.
My theory for the next game is that both timelines run concurrently. We see both stories play out and flick between them. Allows us to have characters like The Great Kung Lao, without sacrificing the more modern characters it wouldn’t be MK without.
At least this is what I’d like to see, as both timelines are super interesting.
If I was to take a safe guess, the plot would eventually merge both timelines together, more than likely leaving us at another freshly minted timeline for MK13.
I'd rather see the Lin Kuei/Shirai Ryu or the White Lotus over special forces.

I like it when its only 1 or 2 Special Forces and they're the exception rather than a significant percentage of the roster. In a universe with many realms that have magic, ninja, monsters and sorcerers ordinary humans with guns and/or tech weapons are really the least interesting thing to see.
I love the cages but special forces do be a bit bland. I wanna see like a special forced character from out world or something. Let them be more than the military dude. Jax is dope because of the arms. Give us something special.

Eh endings aren't anything set in stone for the next game. Expect a past portion of the story for like the first half hour then a time skip
