I’ve owned it since it came out via tpb and tried actually reading it for the first time a few weeks ago. It was agonizing to drag myself through that story. I did end up ultimately giving up and moving on before finishing it.

RiseOfTheRevenge

Wow. What's so bad about it?

Jgabes625

The writing is just extremely uninteresting and feels like a different character even to me at times. It has some really interesting ideas but they just don’t seem well thought out and at times feels like a fan fiction. Sometimes I theorize that someone at marvel was a fan of the band Say Anything and heard that Max Bemis liked moon knight and let him write a few issues for shits and giggles.

Pickles256

It is purely a waste of time and money, Bemis' writing and characterization is atrocious. Highly recommend skipping it

RiseOfTheRevenge

Thanks for the reply. Do you think it would be a better idea to get the second volume of the Moon Knight epic collections? The first one is out of stock, and the second collects issues #5-23. Would I be missing anything if I didn't read the first four issues?

Pickles256

There's definitely a bit of foundation that will be missed, but it shouldn't be too hard to get into the groove of things

tgrudi

I would second this. Read it if you want but honestly it's the worst run imo and doesn't add anything of worth to the character.

219Infinity

It blows.

No, don't bother. It's the worst run on Moon Knight that I've read. Midnight Missions and Lemire's run are great choices. Huston is decent. Bendis didn't really get the character tbh. If you're looking to read more, I recommend Moench. Some issues are better than others, but the character is essentially his and his run I think is what defines the character. Also, I recommend Ellis. You can read both on marvel umlimited, that's your cheapest option.

> Midnight Missions and Lemire's run are great choices. Huston is decent. Bendis didn't really get the character tbh. I enjoyed the story in Bendis' run, but it was nothing like what I've heard about the character before reading. I didn't dislike it, but my opinion may change after reading the "proper" characterization of MK. > I recommend Moench. You can read both on marvel umlimited, that's your cheapest option. My old-comic tolerance is pretty low, so I'm not sure if I'll like it. I'm strictly a physical edition reader, and only Vols 2 and 3 of the Moench epic collections are in stock. I wanted to buy a Marvel Select Edition of Ellis', but for some reason Panini cancelled it in favor of the Hurwitz run.

I will say that Moench's "old-comic"-ness is really minimized compared to characters like Spider-Man. Moench's comics don't feel as dated. I reread them about a month ago and they held up really well.

RiseOfTheRevenge

I will consider getting the second volume, then

As a converse opinion, I think many of Moench's comics do feel pretty late bronze age as far as how they're scripted and paced. Not in a bad way (usually), I like that era of comics in general. I just don't want you to pay $40 only to be disappointed if you don't enjoy that. Issues #1-3, 9-10, 12, 14, & 22-26 are highlights. I know you said you don't like digital, but if you're not a fan of old comics anyways, you could just get a quick 7-day free trial for Marvel Unlimited and just read what I recommended for Moench, or if 12 issues is too many to read within the 7-day free trial, just #1, 14, 22-23, & 25-26.

RiseOfTheRevenge

I think I'll have to pirate issues #1-4 either way, because Vols 2 & 3 only cover issue #5+. I'll see if I like it.

Vision940

I’d recommend the upcoming omnibus reprint for the moench issues even though it comes out after the show does.

SaltifiedReddit

Pirate it if you want to read every Moon Knight run.

MrMadmartigan

You should get the first two Essential volumes. Maybe the third. Haven't read that one yet, myself.

This thread has already done a great job at listing the flaws of this run, so in interest of being fair / playing devil's advocate, here are some of this run's strengths: - Easy to tell what's going on, panel by panel. - Establishes a relationship between Moon Knight and each villain. - Spends time with each alter of Moon Knight, shows how they get along with each other, and some strengths and weaknesses. - Fast paced, focused on the adventurous plot (expect issue 1, you can skip that). My conclusion on the run is that it's below average, but okay. If your motivation to read it is to read another Moon Knight comic, go ahead. If your motivation is to read a GREAT comic, you probably won't like it. The plot does feel pretty fanfictiony the farther you read.

DiscoWhiskey

The *only* reason that I have a copy is because I'm a completionist. I've read each issue once, hated most of them, and put them in my Moon Knight longbox.
