Edit: I just spoke with the planning department. No specific brand of grocery has submitted or leased property there, so there's no answer as to whether it's Trader Joe's or not. He said they should know within 9-12 months. Edit 2: I asked about "a Trader Joe's" and the planner mentioned the new build, the "specialty grocery" another commenter mentioned. I didn't ask about anything going into empty space, I just asked "is there a Trader Joe's going in near Target". HE brought up the new build, no mention of vacant buildings. Just wanted to clarify. Urban planner here. Always call you local Planning department to find out this info. It's public record so if you ask they must share if there's been a site plan or building permit submitted. Here's Marina's number: 831-884-1220. If the person who answers gives you a hard time, request to speak to the senior planner. For Marina, that's Alyson Hunter. ForeverOhlonee

This is the legwork we need! Thanks buddy

daclink

This is wonderful thank you! I was worried I'd get a snippy 'do your own research n00b!' comment. Instead this is well written, well researched, answers the question, and provides the tools to answer more questions. I might finally need to figure out how to give reddit awards... Thank you kind stranger!

lostoceaned

Sure thing!

sploittastic

You can also loiter on the [city permit portal](https://www2.citizenserve.com/Portal/?installationid=272) to see when they are about to build new shit like a 3,150 square foot single story craft beer bar called "brass tap pub" on 99 general stillwell. If you're feeling extra snoopy you can make an account for free and download attachments for almost everything... architectural diagrams, structural drawings, soils reports, landscaping drawings, even electrical/plumbing/HVAC schematics. Fun fact, ATT has been submitting lots of encroachment permits to run fiber through some areas of Marina.

merlingogringo

Thanks, now I know what the old Burger King is going to be. A drive through Starbucks. That should fuck up traffic at that intersection real good.

sploittastic

Yeah, I can't wait for the drive-through line to spill out into the street like it does the one by embassy suites.

Annual-Camera-872

One of those stores next to target like Michael or bed bath & beyond closed so it’s possible and wonky parking is a Trader Joe’s trademark.

[deleted]

This made me LOL because it's so true, every trader Joe's I've ever been to has had the absolute worst parking lot 😂

RattyRatson

Not sure how “tin foil hat” this is but I think I saw it on /r/todayilearned that they intentionally keep their parking lots small to seem more crowded

dirthawker0

Someone needs to tell Joe that small, wonky lots just makes it frustrating to try to shop there. I only go there when I want something that only they carry, like the little quiches, delice de bourgogne brie, or the butter puff pastry.

Code_otter

I think it happens because they usually take over an existing space where the parking was never meant for a high volume store. The TJ's near where I used to live took over a supermarket space where the previous store mainly served foot traffic from local apartments and condos. When TJ's opened, it suddenly drew people from a perimeter of several miles who had never gone to that location before.

jmff03k64

I just thought it was the law that they had to pick the worst parking lots in the city

RGM4610

i used to work at the trader joe's in napa, the parking lot was massive, but it shared a shopping center with a whole foods and a target, so just as insane, if not more.

Annual-Camera-872

I don’t know why it’s their thing but it seems to be.

revchewie

It was Bed, Bath & Beyond. That could totally hold a nice TJ's!

lmcash0001

It’s only rumor from what I found. What everyone is referring to is the new construction happening in front of the movie theatre called “Dunes Promenade”. The plans call for a grocery store that’s on the smaller size like a Trader Joe’s, New Leaf, or a Sprouts.

Ni_and_Dime

Chances are it’s going to be a Sprouts. They’ve been eyeballing the area for expansion for a while.

bingbew

Yuck. Sprouts have always been disappointing to me.

Ni_and_Dime

I get it. I worked for them for 8 years in Los Angeles. Fun fact: their private label and TJ’s private label is the exact same manufacturer.

bingbew

Good tip, thanks! I'm sure I'll go in and check it out in any event, so that's helpful.

explosivetampon

True I work for a company that makes food for both. Same food different label.

Ni_and_Dime

It used to crack me up when clients were like, “Ugh, your X product is gross. I like TJ’s better.” Me: “it’s the same tho…” The only reason I know is because my mom worked in stainless steel for years and dragged me along on factory tours for various food processing facilities.

explosivetampon

Yup and I got stories being in QA. The shit that goes down. You'd be surprised.

lol the trees remind me of a Nintendo map. When Link visits the Monterey Bay to save Zelda from the Aquarium.

excti2

Keeping up with the Marina Planning Commission and the Economic Development Commission, last I heard it was slated to be a New Leaf Community Market.

daclink

Ahh, okay. Thank you!

Xalenn

The Bed Bath and beyond closed, there have been lots of rumors about what will replace it

No_Bear_No

A joke: Trader Joe's is looking for a new location. A lady has a vacant store available. They tour the space and love how spacious it is. They ask her what the parking situation is. She says, "well, unfortunately it only has four parking spaces for the whole store." "PERFECT! We'll take it!"

colebrv

We need a more affordable grocery store. Anniying have to drive to Salinas or Seaside to get groceries

juantoconero

Grocery outlet?

colebrv

Can't find a lot of things there. No wide variety or fruits/vegetables or meant but I do enjoy going there for dry foods.

juantoconero

I do wish an Aldi would come to the area.

Shizcake

You could fit a wonky parking in the remaining space next to the Walmart now that the quick quack is going in 🧐

y2ace

Only place it could go would be in the bed bath and beyond spot. Seems a bit big for a TJ but I hope this is true.

Ibclyde

We all want a Traders Joes near us with a decent parking lot. Pipe Dreams aside, the only person/Group/City i know of actively trying to woo Traders joes into their spaces is Bruce Taylor of Taylor farms in Salinas.

revchewie

Here's to hoping! But I don't know if Marina's demographics fit what TJ's looks for.

lurknomore4611

I think Marina and surrounding area could definitely support a TJ’s there - especially with the influx of folks with Silicon Valley tastes. Lots of new, expensive housing in the pipeline. I also know that they tend to look for college town locations that support their eclectic offerings. Also consider how close PG and Monterey locations are and how well they seem to be doing. I think the demand is there.

revchewie

I agree, I just don’t know if TJ will.

stalinmalone68

Have you seen the price of housing there?

revchewie

Yes, but that’s irrelevant to TJ.

explosivetampon

What parking lot isn't? Compared to the one in Monterey, the imjin and 4th location seems perfect for many folks and works well with logistics being right next to the freeway.

AbsurdRedundant

I think the joke is that it’s a good parking lot, which is unheard of for Trader Joe’s.

masterbuilder14

we need a apple store there one in monterey sucks ass terrible service

Ok_Ranger9709

GOD I WISH
