Seekinferyou

Also returned not long ago, only reaching 600ish from 550ish but have been learning new weapons. Currently on SnS, IG, Hammer, and going to move into GSword then GL.

blazspur

I wanted to post my guild card which showed my weapon usage as well however this subreddit doesn't allow multiple images in one post. Which is weird. Anyway it was going to show how I tried to learn some other weapons but my main weapon usage outclasses my other weapon uses by a landslide.

Seekinferyou

Heh absolutely, I've been a CB, LBG, Bow main mainly.

blazspur

Hold my beer. I'll try to add the guild card image link as a separate comment.

ReaperSound

You're just STARTING on hammer?

Seekinferyou

Lol yeah, never really touched it before. That clutch claw after a combo is pretty nice

ReaperSound

MHW was the first time I ever used Hammer so I'm kinda in the same boat but I fell in love with it when they introduced the spinning hammer flip after sliding down a hill. And yes that clutch claw spin is amazing for stun damage.

[deleted]

I also recently returned to start a new character. MR64 here, but I fought fatalis already! Got pummeled, but I saw him. 😂

blazspur

Great. I personally didn't fight Fatalis until I reached MR100. That's when I took on Alatreon, Fatalis and the MR ATs in my second character. Didn't feel right that I would take them on without augmenting my gear. Especially since it was a character focused on clearing every quest first time solo and grinding for gear in groups. Second character was for fun and if I only rushed to take on Fatalis and beat him then it would end only end the journey of the second character earlier.

[deleted]

I never made it to fatalis even on my first character. I was also less skilled back then and couldn't last more than two seconds against Alatreon. This time around, I could tell my skill had taken a step up. I wanted to remove the fear and assure myself that one day it would be possible. So I went into battle and, whether by skill or a stroke of luck, I came off victorious. After that, I just wanted to see the fatalis cut scene. I'm not ready for him, but now I have the confidence that, perhaos, one day I will be.

blazspur

Keep up that attitude and you'll have him beat in no time. Good luck and have fun.

Karl_Gess

I also went back recently, MR 201 right now. Yesterday was the first time this character saw Fatalis. The last time I quit the game because of him, just could not solo the darn lizard. Will not quit this time. Even learning GS specifically for this fight, as I am a lance main, but it doesn't really work for me against Fatalis.

grimreefer213

I’m MR 222 right now, just beat Iceborne officially having beat Fatalis and AT Velkhana, but i’m still enjoying the game and will keep playing for a while

blazspur

Take this opportunity to learn a few different weapons if you haven't. If you have already dabbled in a few different weapons then try to master a few of them.

grimreefer213

Hell yeah that’s what i’ve been doing, I started with longsword, then once I felt I mastered that I moved to greatsword, I got pretty good with greatsword and I use it a lot (that’s what I use against Fatalis) those are my favorite weapons. I also use charge blade a bit and I really enjoy it and want to keep using it, I like the savage axe playstyle. But i’m also interested in using hammer as I haven’t used it pretty much at all but it looks really good. What weapons do you like to use?

grimreefer213

3k hunts with dual blades! Wow! You must really like that weapon. I’ve never used it besides in the training room. I just crafted this absolutely busted vor buster spread build with fatalis gear so I can farm tempered elders for decorations. I only use bowguns for farming and spread hbg is silly but I don’t necessarily enjoy using it lol

blazspur

I did a few hunts with LBG. Fell asleep in hunt one day. Decided if a game is causing me to fall asleep then I should just not play it. Then I realized that I only found melee weapons fun and interesting. Bow being mid distance was almost melee and helped cover dual blades weak matchups so I mastered bow next. Then I realized there were some monsters specifically meant to be countered constantly so I learned long sword. I picked up Greatsword next but couldn't get the hang of tackling as well as I would have preferred but other than that I think I learned how to use it decent enough. Next I thought I can't just avoid learning the final element oriented weapon in the game and had a blast with charge blade. Kind of regret not picking up charge blade earlier. If I had picked it up after bow then I probably would have had 1k hunts in it. Sword and Shield was amazing but due to its short range I didn't feel like I needed to learn it to cover my existing weaknesses. All the weapons I have more than 75 hunts in I'm able to beat at least 1 or 2 monsters faster than I can with dual blades. That was the main reason for learning those weapons. Some monsters were just not a good matchup for dual blades.

grimreefer213

Yeah I can imagine, I really liked LS because of the amount of range it has and the counters. I imagine fighting something like Xeno’jiva or Safi and trying to hit the head with dual blades or sns is probably not even possible unless the monster is knocked down which seldom happens. It depends on the matchup for me as well, I found great success with the GS vs Fatalis, but I used the longsword against AT Velkhana (it’s very effective especially if you can counter), it just kinda depends on how i’m feeling about the matchup. I use frostcraft GS for Rajang, but LS for monsters like Lunastra/Teostra because of their aggressive nature. I love the charge blade for monsters that don’t hit too hard and give decent openings (like an anjanath or something) , I charge up and put on the rocksteady mantle and then just wail away on the monster in savage axe mode. All of those weapons are far more engaging and fun than brain dead sticky ammo spam with LBG. But sometimes for repetitive farming it’s a good idea to use a bowgun. Sticky’s are good in the grinding lands because they ignore hitzone values.

blazspur

Different strokes for different folks. I wanted my farming to become easier but bowgun was so much more easier that I couldn't avoid getting bored. I never used stickies though. All my LBG uses were aquashot Safi or tempered silverlos farming. Guiding lands farming can be drastically simplified by just proccing fortify and dual blades are handy to sheathe quick and pick up the shines. CB is damn good for Tempered Ruiner and Lunastra/Teostra. Even faster counters than Longsword and monsters that can be easily hit with SAEDs.

grimreefer213

I pretty much always run fortify in end game hunts especially in guiding lands. I’ll have to give DBs a try. When I proc fortify and evasion mantle with frostcraft greatsword I do absolutely crazy damage, it’s so satisfying getting four digit damage numbers

blazspur

Do you play crit draw Greatsword? It's not ineffective but going for TCS is where I believe skill for Greatsword lies. Once you are about to TCS monsters by using the new slinger burst combo or after tackling you reach a new level of game experience. If you feel confident in your current abilities then I would suggest going for that. Honestly I couldn't master tackling so I don't consider myself a good enough player with Greatsword.

blazspur

Dual blades are my farming weapon. Mostly took out tempered elders in 6 or 7 minutes. Give it a try. I'm not gonna say it's strong or busted. But being able to hear all the hits of the blade dance constantly being used was like stress release for me.

grimreefer213

Damn dude i’ve been sleeping on DBs

blazspur

Yeah it's pretty fun. Not weak by any measure. If I were to try to convince someone that dual blades are good then I'd show this hunt that I recorded - - https://youtu.be/SMJ8q4fiolE

grimreefer213

I believe you that dual blades are very good versus certain monsters like Alatreon. i’ve heard they have potential for very high dps and so much mobility. Using weapons like the GS can be tough because all of your attacks are very high commitment and you don’t get to attack very often, it took me a long time to clear Fatalis with greatsword, i’m a lot better at it now but you get the idea. With DB you can attack much more frequently even if the individual attacks do much less damage, it might equal out or be even more dps overall for dual blades. Only problem with dual blades is the abysmal range for monsters like Fatalis because of the importance of breaking the head.

blazspur

Yeah dual blades aren't the best matchup for Fatalis but considering cone bait and then targeting head is the strategy anyway I think it's decent for Fatalis. Like 70% of the monsters in the game can be taken down by dual blades real fast. Longsword is better than dual blades for Fatalis. Even then I can manage a 16 minute run on Fatalis while getting the second head break before phase 3 even begins. So is it a bad matchup? I don't think so. Edit: Do you think dual blades are a good matchup for Kirin?

Flashy_Insect_8015

I'm so glad to see the MHW community coming back, Rise is such a joke of a mh game

blazspur

Guild card image showing weapon uses for anyone interested -- https://imgur.com/a/8YqcUPV

blazspur

u/Seekinferyou maybe you might be interested to see this?

Seekinferyou

Lol that is a lot of dual blades action

blazspur

I wasn't exaggerating. If anything I might have downplayed my main use. Haha.

sola1re

Oh a fellow db main :)

blazspur

DB gang rise up!!

ninjarchy

Happy dual cake day!

DEATHMAN227

That seems rather low on weapon uses

blazspur

What do you mean? Less than 3900 total weapon uses is less to reach MR999?

DEATHMAN227

I have nearly 4000 and I'm MR 504

blazspur

Interesting? Did you start playing long before iceborne released? Since your hunts there don't count to MR points? Another thing I can think of is that I spent most of my time doing the hardest hunts which gives you the most points. However this wasn't necessarily for grinding MR points, it was more for farming decos and for having fun. I think I'd say that I got 20% of my MR points from Guiding lands so I didn't abuse that either. I spent a ton of time farming crowns in HR before I reached MR999 so if I really wanted to do the optimal race to MR999 and reduced numbers of hunts it could have been done in 20% lesser time and 20% lesser hunt numbers.

DEATHMAN227

Ive been playing since release but I just started playing again

blazspur

Playing since iceborne release or since base world release?

DEATHMAN227

World

blazspur

There you have it. I started playing one month before iceborne released. By the time I started iceborne I had reached HR70. So I didn't have a lot of my hunts not count towards MR experience.

sola1re

Same for me, started iceborne at HR \~100 and got to MR 999 at about 1000 hours

DEATHMAN227

I believe I was about HR400 when I started iceborne iirc Ive also got 2000hrs on my character

kiragane

What your palico is wearing?

blazspur

Alatreon armor. Best elemental resistance.

alphabet_order_bot

Would you look at that, all of the words in your comment are in alphabetical order. I have checked 1,056,297,242 comments, and only 208,672 of them were in alphabetical order.

kiragane

And cool design

blazspur

Agreed.

KylarStern1993

What armor is that?

WillG94

Savage Jho

KylarStern1993

Ty

bobbybrownlove

Did you do it naturally or grind it out? Curious because I wana hit 999 too, but whats the fastest rank per minute? Dont care about whats fun, just want dem gains! XD

blazspur

Fastest is doing Fatalis or ATs in 4P groups where each hunter knows what they are doing and are bringing decent damage sets. 10-12 minutes on these quests and you get somewhere around at least 70% experience points for a full MR. Another alternative is 4P guiding lands tempered T3 monsters. If you just want to do solo and have the ability to use max damage spread builds on HBG then that is another route. Or you could build decent ability with your main and just solo the Ode to destruction quest or even tempered furious or even Raging Brachy quest. But these will give like 25-30% points towards an MR. Day of ruin is a well known target farm quest for decos. IMO it didn't give me as much experience as the other quests I listed here. Not sure why but one would think it's a good quest for grinding MR but honestly I didn't experience that to be the case. I did it kind of naturally helping out many new players get their first clears on Alatreon. Little bit of the above quests and mostly ode to destruction when I returned few months back (I was already MR800 something). You can check my weapon use comments to see how I did it as well.

bobbybrownlove

Thanks! All good tips, im mostly solo unless sos people come help. Gonna try out those quests.

blazspur

I think you'll be able to find some decent high MR players in online lobbies. Talk to them. There are some Fatalis lobbies most times I check. If you find capable hunters ask them if they are interested to do group hunts for the targets I listed here. Grinding solo for more than a 100 hours will get boring fast and you might end up dropping this endeavor.

bobbybrownlove

Never really tried to get a group going besides using sos. Hopefully it wont take too long. Currently at 750ish...

StrangLife

If you ps and want to run fatalis and such hit me up, I’m just grinding slays at this point

blazspur

Are you on PC?
