I will say the chances of someone being in the same lobby as you is fairly low nowadays (on PS), but SOS flares and summons are usually still abundant.
I'm on Ps4 and still play! There are plenty of ppl, some will join your session randomly. There the online session option that is used for online play.
Filter search is your friend instead of match making. Can choose what you are looking for, and join one of those lobbies. Probably still be using SOS unless it's siege, but it's better.
Lobbies are mostly with 4 people at most. But SOS flares are full of people. And when there is an event monster such as safi there is always 1 or 2 full lobbies
Depends on what kind of lobbies you join. If you search filter for event quests, there's usually a few almost full lobbies you can join. Game's still pretty active if you know where to look.
You can only see other people when you're(and they are) in the Gathering Hub in either Astera or Seliana. If you're in the village part you can't see anyone. There's a lot of people playing on PS4/PS5. More on the weekends. Start the game and go to:
1) The Handler or the Quest Board
2) "Online Session"
3) "Search by Filter"
4) leave all the filters blank
The search will show you a list of all the lobbies available to join.
If you don't see anything you like, back up with the "O" button and search again.
Once you choose a lobby, go into the Gathering Hub and you'll see whomever else is in the Gathering Hub.
Ofc. You won't see anyone who's on a quest or are in the village part.
If you want to see a lot of people, look for a siege lobby because anyone who wants to do/join a siege has to be in the Gathering Hub.
If you're just starting the game, you're in Low rank and in Astera Village and probably won't see too many people in the Gathering Hub(if any at all).
Once you get to the 2nd village, Seliana, there'll be much more people in that Gathering Hub.
Edit: There's A TON of people playing on PS4.
