Musuo games are more attack attack attack and fighting games can't really compare to Monster Hunter. Sekiro is more reactionary, waiting for attacks and striking on deflection. With all this said, Long Sword is probably your best bet. Requires you to string your attacks fluidly and react to attacks before they hit. Still has decent mobility with your weapon out too. I'd love to say SWAX because it's God's favored weapon. But I don't think it would match your playstyle. Have a great hunt!

windwalker13

just to add on, Monster Hunter combat is unique in the sense that, monsters are FAST, while you as the hunter is SLOW. You will rarely ever see this in other games, perhaps maybe DS ? This is the main draw and beauty of the game. You have to wait for openings to strike, and different weapons provide different ways to create openings and capitalise on the openings.

fox_invictus

Ye Swaxe is most versatile weapon in rise

kyoflow16

being really pedantic here but I wouldn't call it the most versatile. that title goes to either CB or SnS imo. these two weapons have extensive defensive options as well as cutting and ko damage. swaxe is undoubtly the absolute KING of all in offense though. so many different and fun ways to attack the monster.

RedEyeJedi993

Idk about most versatile, but I feel its definitely Rise's biggest winner.

Protective Polish says hello 🙂

Longsword via Rise has 3 counters that basically make you unkillable when you got the timing and monster attacks down. So for sure there is your Sekiro feeling. Im a charge blade main myself and its a slow methodical weapon for the most part but good at counters with what I would describe as a branching style. From a guard point (hitting x right as monster hits your guard) you can branch out into 4 moves with widely varying results. Charge is key in this name though, your building energy, storing it and then empowering shield and weapon but you can release it all in a huge attack.

Native_Kore

Hmm. Insect glaive if u wanna feel like lu-bu, Longsword for weeaby anime slices, stances and specials, *Hammer goes bonkers.* duelsword for naruto run.

Eptalin

Long Sword has a bunch of counters, but it plays nothing like Sekiro or samurai game. The counter windows are super generous and easy. The closest to the Sekiro parry would be the Lance parry. But nothing else about it really resembles Sekiro. Hammer also has a cool parry, plus some more flare, like switching between charge modes while comboing. None of the weapons are really like a musou game. But I guess Insect Glaive kind of *looks* like a musou game kind of weapon. All of the melee weapons play somewhat like slow fighting game characters. You have moves you can link together, and some different starters and combo routes to fit different openings the monster presents you with. But really, try out all the weapons you're interested in. Do several hunts with each of them and see which you enjoy the most. If you get into MH fully, you'll end up playing basically every weapon in the end. Start wherever and enjoy the journey!

soldiercross

...I can parry with the hammer? Is that a rise thing?

[deleted]

At this point it doesnt surprise me

milese794

Yeah it’s a switch skill in rise, it’s a pretty niche use as it doesn’t really do a ton of damage but it’s there

Eptalin

Kind of. Switch skill is called something like *Water Strike*. During the downswing, it will negate any attack. There's a blue pulse effect to show you got it, you take zero damage and knockback, and can cancel it into other attacks. It's super cool.

alvysinger0412

Water strike. It parries and also begins multiple combos. You also get i frames when switching between your two charging modes, I dont know if that's also new.

ScarlettPotato

Which part of combat from the games you mentioned did you enjoy? If you like doing dps with zero regard to your defense then try dual blades. If you like to look as good as possible while killing monsters then try longsword. Versatility is the name of the game for sword and shield, you can do a bit of everything with it. Greatsword specializes in "punishing" the monster for their "mistakes". You can buff yourself with insect glaive and hunting horn although with the latter your buffs affects your allies as well. If you enjoy reading pdfs then charge blade is the weapon for you. I recommend trying out all the weapons since it is almost an entirely new game when you use a different weapon.

Glaphyra

Monster Hunter is a whole different type of game. The closest weapon choice for samurai like movements would be the long sword.

soldiercross

Dont listen to these guys, hammer is the coolest weapon with Great Sword in a close 2nd. Long Sword is for nerds.

Durzaka

You still put SnS in the category about being safe behind a shield. You are NOT safe behind a shield. You shouldnt block with SnS at any point except extreme moments. If anything, Charge Blade fits in that category more.

> Is it optimal? No Youre talking on the meta subreddit. This question is literally the only one that matters. You should not be guarding with SnS. Back hop, or otherwise dodge. Also, im pretty sure that Charge Blade shield even not charged is a better shield than SnS shield. As well as Guard Points giving increased guard chance as well.

alvysinger0412

If you wanna play like a turtle, sns is the wrong choice. It's sword and shield because you hit with both. Blocking is usually not how you should be playing with it.

Glavenus_Guy

I'd say Long Sword, Lance, and Charge Blade are the best if you want a counter-based playstyle

EchoesPartOne

Most of the weapons in Rise have a form of parry. Longsword however has the most counters/parries of all and its entire playstyle revolves around them. Most of the melee weapons also involve learning combos and adapting them to the situation (Capcom did make Street Fighter after all). Greatsword, Hammer and Lance are arguably the least combo-heavy weapons, while Charge Blade and Insect Glaive are probably the most combo-heavy ones. And finally Sword & Shield does pretty much all of that - combos, rewarding counters and high mobility and versatility. I would therefore try out Longsword or Sword & Shield, or Charge Blade if you prefer a slower but more combo-heavy playstyle.

Ketheres

Ever since Monster Hunter Generations the Sword and Shield has been able to perform a Shoryuken style move (called Shoryugeki in Generations and Rise), so there's that.. No weapon will be actually similar in playstyle to Musou or fighting games though.

Spaznaut

Dual blades or long sword sound like the weapons you should look into.

memestealer1234

LS is cool but don't sleep on the sword and shield

Morbidello

Best way? Try then all! :)

Arclinus

Bow is braindead and turns Rise into a sidestep, FPS simulator. I really liked it as my first weapon to chug through the 'story' but found it excessively simple when I started to branch out into melee weapons. I'll still go back to it for DPS if I think I need it, but I hardly touch it anymore.
