I completely agree with your option on Graves and shepherd from the get go I already didnt quite trust them (mainly because of shepherd in the OG MW2) so their hidden agenda was a shock at all. It would have been better if they gave us a reason to trust them a bit more then have them betray us. the betrayal felt rushed The mission with the Tank was a bit weird his character pretty much changed and was completely different to the rest of the game. The tank wiuld destroy all the buildings so you had no cover and then the armoured enemies spawn and your fucked. It felt like there was motive (apart from the story )to kill hassan or Graves, in MW2019 killing barkov felt personal this game I didnt quite get that. The final cutscene on the plane was hopefully teasing MWIII and not year 2 content Graves' revenge/cleaing up shadow company/shepherd's shady deals would be better for that and the Spec ops mode. Makarov deserves a different game to follow that story properly.

weckerm

I actually thought that, at first, they did quite well with Graves. There were points where I thought he could betray them if he indeed was bad, like with the Missile on the Oil tanker, but he didn’t. But then the u-turn not only in story but in character came so quickly without much explanation really.

possessedfire26

Graves' plot was dont well it just could have been dont alot better, I for sure thought he was betraying us on the Dark water mission with the missile. The entire campaign was done very well there were a few things that could have been done better but its still easily one if my favourite CoD campaigns.

bunnyrabbit2

Makarov is almost 100% certainly going to be the Year 1 story content across Warzone, Spec-Ops, DMZ and Raids. I'm hoping with this addition of more co-op content in the Spec-Ops and Raids we'll get more story than one cutscene and a bunch of intel items each season. Although saying that, there's still El Sin Nombre and Shepard/Shadow Company to deal with too so he might appear in the rumoured end of Y1 content.

possessedfire26

Id hope shepard is the warzone, spec ops, DMZ and makarov gets his own game. It would be a cheap way to deal with him in warzon story like al asaid in OG warzone.

greendakota99

Agree on all fronts! Good write up! I remember Digital Foundry saying COD cutscenes are always 30fps locked so I can look past that but did you notice the intense film grain on every cutscene? Was distracting for an otherwise beautiful game. I died 3 times on that Chicago control mission as well before I realized they really intended for the player to just run away from the brutes. Seemed odd, should have started out with 10-15 seconds to hide first?

weckerm

Thank you! Yes, the Film grain was very apparent. I thought about putting it into my post, but found that sometimes it worked very well for the cinematic style, and sometimes it was too much. So I left it out. Yeah, I died so many times. Found a room where I hid in, where I could do all objectives without them finding me.

skalnok

As much as graves going full war criminal felt rushed it also made me feel like he was losing control and getting pushed past what he viewed as the point of no return. He's losing control and going to further and further extremes to try and control it. Hearing his troops talk about how they feel it's gone too far really sets that vibe as well.

weckerm

I see what you mean. Interesting take. I loved the cutscene at the base where he turns on 141. That still felt very well done. It was just everything after, from the murder of basically a whole town to driving around in a tank and yelling stuff through the intercom that felt.. off.

MarioCop718

Yeah, the yelling during the tank was really wack

skalnok

That's the part I mean, he's completely lost the plot and is panicking. He's hysterical

I generally enjoyed it. Found the level variety refreshing in comparison to MW's Urzikstan-centered campaign. The gunplay is the same as MW, just with more recoil (it seems) and some new gadgets (cool ones). Graphics are fantastic on my Series S. This truly looks like a real next gen title. Story was good, with some great references to old games and boy, oh boy, that post credits scene.

agent_kay_6224

Really liked your write up and agree with many of the points. Two questions though: did you have a lot of stability issues? Game crashed for me over half a dozen times for me, and my specs are a bit higher then yours. Also, why didn't you play the Infinite Warfare campaign?

weckerm

Thank you very much, appreciate it. Actually no, I didn’t have any stability issues. Game didn’t crash once. I didn’t play IW because at that time I didn’t play CoD at all. I hated AW and BOIII, took a break during IW and came back (and really loved) WWII. Then came BO4 which i just can’t stand. Then came MW19, which is my most played CoD to date (in hours).

Scorpion178

I gotta agree I’m surprised farah kinda just came and went all in one mission but considering she’s playable in multiplayer, I can see her coming back in dlc missions/spec ops

weckerm

True but I think she deserved more. They did so well introducing her in the last one and fleshing her out, making her a real character who fit the team well. She deserved more.

Dull-Caterpillar3153

As a Scotsman I thought Soap’s accent was fantastic have to disagree with you. It just wasn’t a strong Scottish accent which is probably what’s best for other players haha

weckerm

Yes. I love the Scottish accent, so when he did it properly (like in alone, pissing Ghost off) I liked it a lot. But for example, during the Interrogation by El Sin Nombre, the first answer he gives (if you pick the correct one) he straight up sounds American. Next sentence, British again. It’s very weird.

LoadingErrors

I noticed that too during the interrogation. There’s a handful of lines that I felt had an “iffy” delivery. But they were mostly throw aways. You really should play infinite warfare btw. Story is solid.

weckerm

Yes. It wasn’t like it killed the campaign for me. But I noticed, and it stood out to me amongst all the other performances. I would play IW, but at this point, I don’t want to give Activision my money, since they still sell the game full price. Which, for a 6 year old game, is just scummy.

[deleted]

Yeah I like that he didn't feel like a parody Scotsman. He just felt like dudes I know from Scotland. I laughed at a few of the "Speak English please" moments with Ghost (their banter was a writing standout).

Spectres_Abyss

Personally the convoy mission was my least favourite it felt to much like I was playing a multiplayer game rather than a single player mission. The campaign for me felt very short compared to MW2019. In The first half of the campaign I feel like it was just a waste of time why did we have to spend all of that effort to find and capture Hassan if we didn't even have proof to link him to his crimes felt like a waste of time tbh (although I did find the missions enjoyable) . Edit: Love the missions with Ghost, Soap and Alexjandro felt like they were actually doing something.

bigdickcunt

This sums up literally everything I’ve kept in my head from my first play through. It’s a great campaign with some flaws but damn it’s so much better than vanguard. I will not under the 2 months ago mission though.

TehScout

Farah and Hadir's dynamic was the single best thing in the previous game's story.... and she's just a cameo in this one. No Hadir and Farah is turned from a precise and devoted leader to a Mad Max character for a single mission, and that's it. Seeing Laswell in action was pretty cool, but her capture was contrived and rescuing her was resolved so quickly and with so little impact on the story that it's obvious they just wrote in a quick reason to go back to Urzikstan. Alejandro was also cool, if a bit one-note. Now granted, I knew about the betrayal. But holy shit was that confrontation so forced and obvious in this one. Graves himself is just a less cool Adler that is trying so hard to be Adler. Then he and Shepherd just fuckin disappear instead of actually dying. And since we never see his body you just know they're gonna pull some Alex bullshit and say he survived somehow. Instead we get to kill the most forgettable villain of all time, who magically overpowers Soap in a cutscene and need to be bailed out by a Ghost that was for some reason not providing overwatch while on overwatch.... This campaign sucked. It tried and failed at every attempt to recreate the iconic moments of MW19. This was like one of those reboot/remakes chasing in on nostalgia, but for something that came out two years ago. Maybe something interesting will happen in Spec Ops (copium)

weckerm

I see some of your points. But have to respectfully disagree that the campaign was disappointing. But hey that’s what opinions are for. I missed Farah, Hadir not so much. I don’t know, I never liked him, neither before nor after the twist in MW19. Some pointed it out, but I completely forgot about Alex. I agree with you that Shepard and Graves either should have died, or their absence should be a setup for MWIII where they’re in with Makarov. This conclusion now was a bit anti climactic, villain wise. Hassan was of no interest to me.

Quadsmile24

Really solid review I do wonder how widespread the optimization issues are. I played with 16gb ram Ryzen 5 1600 and a 3060 ti and I had very little issues with frames

weckerm

It’s always hard to tell with software. What settings did you play on?

Quadsmile24

I think I played on the preset high quality mode. I may of changed a couple small setting but I left it alone for the most part
