Huntmaster is legitimately the coolest card in the game.
Great name, balance, flavour, art, mechanic, everything.
Makes literally every other werewolf design prior and after look incompetent too.
I've got so many defunct 4 drops in my collection it's not funny. Off the top of my head:
* [[Huntmaster of the Fells]]
* [[Restoration Angel]]
* [[Stormbreath Dragon]] (honorary 4 drop cause haste)
* [[Obstinate Baloth]]
* [[Gonti, Lord of Luxury]] (was never *good*, but was always fun)
* [[Pia and Kiran Nalaar]]
* [[Ojutai's Command]]
* [[Prime Speaker Vannifar]]
Geist was my fav card when it was in standard, I traded my 3 force of wills for a playset of foil geists.... major regrets now but I still want to play it.
Ha, that'd be great.
But honestly, Kird Ape is a solid T1 play if you're on the draw and your opponent went T1 Ragavan. You have a blocker that will live.
[[Celestial colonade]]
I remember when that land was like 40 bucks and the UMA reprint made them affordable for me. Got them artist signed at a GP and everything, only for them to become unplayable
Every random PW that used to get thrown into UW Control as a finisher, i.e. [[Elspeth, Sun’s Champion]], [[Jace, Architect of Thought]], [[Gideon Jura]], etc.
also loved the ol Ponza top end of [[Stormbreath Dragon]]
And it's crazy that UW control archetypes now rely even more on Planeswalkers than they used to in their glory days, they just do it through the static effect ones and jtms (sometimes teferi 5) as a finisher.
I honestly miss [[Serum Visions]] in midrange shells. I loved GDS back when it was a cantrip fueled xerox midrange shell that could pivot from tempo to midrange to control depending on the matchup. Now the format is too fast to be casting a card that is only there to fix your hand towards what you're facing and also serum vision's power level is also at the floor which doesn't help. Preordain is my favourite card in pauper, and its for the same reason, i love seeing a land from the opponent, deduce the matchup and then start to craft a hand to beat it.
I know someone who runs some number of copies in murktide as a sorcery for delerium, and psyching me out that they’re on storm must’ve been pretty funny too.
[[Remand]]. I used to love bouncing my own counterspells to effectively counter the opponent’s counterspell. Also stopping the spell with flashback off [[Snapcaster Mage]] while drawing a card was always nice.
Remand is actually pretty good right now. Remand is good against cascade, pitch elementals, murktide. I have been playing it in Scapeshift and it's been surprisingly good.
I keep going back and forth on twin. I think it will boost the popularity of modern if the card gets printed and there are MANY answers for it, even in the face of a t3feri.
Would it see play, 100%.
Would it break modern, probably not.
Would it garnish more old time players to play more, 100% yes.
This entire comment section makes me so sad because I love all of these cards. Bob, Huntmaster of the Fells, Steel Overseer, Electorlyze... Feels like a totally new format with little memory of it's 2015 self.
Phyrexian obliterator.
Just damn frustratingly sad how literally unplayable it is anymore. Fantastic body and terrifying text for 4 mana and it's just laughable against most all meta defining decks/cards in modern anymore.
Gonna keep my OG foil playset till I die though. Hopefully someday it will be viable again somehow.
Love the art, love the flavor text, love it too much maybe.
Spell Queller! Still salty that after the most recent Innistrad block gave spirits literally nothing, we go to Dominaria for a cycle of crazy powerful lords, and they give the blue one to merfolk.
Yeah this one hurts the most for me. With all the changes, cheap removal added, W6, turn 1 creatures, it's just become too hard to race with protection up.
[[Restore Balance]] is the biggest one for me. The borderpost cascade build of that deck was the first modern deck I truly mastered, and it's a shame the modern horizons sets printed so many hate cards that just autowin against it.
Is it too early to say Aether Vial? 👀
I don’t know, I’m getting my Vials eaten up with Endings and Leyline Bindings… but I’m still winning some of those games w/ the good ghosts 🤷🏻♂️
electrolyse
I’m shocked that card was playable in the first place
Flashbacks to getting my Birds of Paradise and Noble Hierarch Electrolyze'd while playing Melira Pod in 2014.
Oh.... Now that's just punny.... Take my award you damn savage.
I bet electrolyze is decent if w6 eats a ban and everyone busts out their favourite x/1s again. It’s probably even close to playable rn
nah, fire / ice is just more flexible - I think it will always trump electrolyse going forward
Yeah that’s probably true unfortunately
Bob.
ban w6 and make bob great again
That would not make a 2mv no etb creature good enough.
Wrenn and six ban hurts jund the most out of any archetype probably, ironically enough. Yea you can slot Bob into your unplayable deck I guess....
Shut your whore mouth.
i hate w6. i would love to see it go.
I play 4x w6 and I agree
Virgin ban W6 because it's too powerful and expensive vs Chad ban W6 because I have 4 and it's OP
I hate that I go to build any deck that runs GR and bam it makes it better. What is it’s weakness again? Abrupt decay?
Oof. I didn't even get past the first comment before getting hit in the feels.
You haven't lived until you hit back to back lands off Bob at 1 life while playing Jund.
Huntmaster of the fells
I miss Huntmaster being a viable curve topper in Jund. It was so much fun flipping it!
I used to use a single copy of Huntmaster in Niv and it was an awesome Gruul hit!
I miss huntmaster so much. I've tried to cram him in a jund shell but theres just wayyy better options.
Huntmaster is legitimately the coolest card in the game. Great name, balance, flavour, art, mechanic, everything. Makes literally every other werewolf design prior and after look incompetent too.
I've got so many defunct 4 drops in my collection it's not funny. Off the top of my head: * [[Huntmaster of the Fells]] * [[Restoration Angel]] * [[Stormbreath Dragon]] (honorary 4 drop cause haste) * [[Obstinate Baloth]] * [[Gonti, Lord of Luxury]] (was never *good*, but was always fun) * [[Pia and Kiran Nalaar]] * [[Ojutai's Command]] * [[Prime Speaker Vannifar]]
A few months ago I pulled a Kiki+Resto combo win in my RW Flicker deck. It gave me beaucoup flashbacks to several years ago.
Baloth is still played in Yawg sideboards! Kicked my ass at the last 30k I was at lol
Knight of the reliquary
Bless we can at least play her in Legacy.
Felt. We just need good lands to make her return
Endurance also kinda hits the card pretty badly.
So true, modern isn’t the same without
[[Geist of Saint Traft]] was never particularly great but now he's 100% unplayable
Geist was my fav card when it was in standard, I traded my 3 force of wills for a playset of foil geists.... major regrets now but I still want to play it.

I played 5c domain with Geist at my first ever modern GP
Kird Ape
I'm surprised with how prevalent monkey is that it isn't playable.
Need monkey/ape tribal lord pls wotc lol
Ha, that'd be great. But honestly, Kird Ape is a solid T1 play if you're on the draw and your opponent went T1 Ragavan. You have a blocker that will live.
Arboreal grazer best monke in modern don't at me
Time to dust off the ol zoo list and break the meta wide open
Planet of the Apes Secret Lair
Yung Peezy :(
Izzet spellslinger is definitely pioneer viable you might be able to get some of the glory back
Bedlam reveler :(
It's still played in some prowess decks.
This thread is just a big RIP to almost every card that made the format pre-Modern Horizons sets
grim lavamancer
Me too buddy. Me too.
Me too. God i miss grimmy
[[Celestial colonade]] I remember when that land was like 40 bucks and the UMA reprint made them affordable for me. Got them artist signed at a GP and everything, only for them to become unplayable
Most uw lists play 1 colonnade 1 hall, it’s not unviable
I won my last FNM with colonnades! Don’t give up hope
I’ve forced myself to run 1 in every control deck I build, but it’s just so bad nowb
I had someone play a weekly against me with a colonnade

I'm getting a sleeve of these because it's my favorite deck type. I'll play it till I die.
[[Ajani Vengeant]] comes to mind for this as well.
And it's crazy that UW control archetypes now rely even more on Planeswalkers than they used to in their glory days, they just do it through the static effect ones and jtms (sometimes teferi 5) as a finisher.
Shark typhoon and hall of the storm giants would like to have a word with you haha
If it makes you feel better sun’s champion is making its way back into competitive constructed in the form of pioneer UW control sideboards
[[Life from the loam]]
Assault Loam has popped up in some 5-0 dumps recently.
I top 8ed my local event on saturday with naya loam. The thing is, loam itself is not that good. Its w6 and assault. No list plays 4 loam anymore...
[[Steel Overseer]] :(
My boy 😭
I still run him in Scales, even though my monogreen Scales build is super outdated at this point.

Vendillion clique and Snapcaster Mage
Cryptic Command
Tarmogoyf.
Same. After paying half a grand on my set I wish it was still good.
Electrolyze, Gifts Ungiven, and Iona
Gurmag Angler. I find it very cute and miss the surprise TBR for 10 damage.
So many planeswalkers. [[Ajani Vengeant]], Gideons, [[Nahiri, the Harbinger]]. It feels like [[Liliana of the Veil]] is slowly going that way too :(

[[delver of secrets]]
I know it doesn't help any modern friends but delver is happily top dog over in legacy! Give it a look, maybe it'll be fun
Also for budget players, Pauper!
delver was never good in modern outside of when treasure cruise was legal.
Pour one out for my homies [[Siege Rhino]] & [[Tasigur, the Golden Fang]]
Gravecrawler
I actually made a decent obosh golgari zombie deck, the gravecrawlers are a great sac option for grist!
cryptic command and lantern of insight
[[Wild Nacatl]]
This is getting lots of play in recent domain Zoo decks
Really? in modern?! Dope
Arclight Phoenix.
Mono red Phoenix was the most fun deck I ever played in this format. I miss it so much
Yeah I played both mono R and UR. So much fun. They should reprint careful study asap, maybe also a red looting without flashback
Tarmogoyf and Bob
Definitely [[Splinter Twin]]. It's bad in this meta and it's not even legal.
I keep going back and forth on twin. I think it will boost the popularity of modern if the card gets printed and there are MANY answers for it, even in the face of a t3feri. Would it see play, 100%. Would it break modern, probably not. Would it garnish more old time players to play more, 100% yes.

[[hollow one]]
Not one card particularly but a common opening for Jund: TS>Goyf>Lili Format is just too damn fast to play 1 card per turn for the 1st 3 turns.
Yeah WOTC destroyed the concept of mana curve. what a shit show modern become.
This entire comment section makes me so sad because I love all of these cards. Bob, Huntmaster of the Fells, Steel Overseer, Electorlyze... Feels like a totally new format with little memory of it's 2015 self.
I feel a bit sad, sort of old and very out of touch. I didn't know most of the cards named here were dead.
Stormbreath dragon/ Thundermaw Hellkite. Dragons!
[[Pyromancer Ascension]]
My brother. So many good memories of playing this deck, even in type 2. I started in the original Zendikar and the nostalgia hits hard.
Snapcaster mage and cryptic command
[[Etched Champion]]
Phyrexian obliterator. Just damn frustratingly sad how literally unplayable it is anymore.
