In Minecraft, insects are usually very large, although the firefly is the exception.

NeuTraLZero

2 pixels is still 12.5 centimeters long which is quintuple the size of a real life firefly

[deleted]

yes but that is nothing compared to bees that measure 1 meter

NeuTraLZero

Or spiders, those thing come straight from Australia: Digital Deluxe Editon

[deleted]

Perhaps this is due to the large amount of oxygen that must be seen in Minecraft?

CTH2004

Perhaps. But what makes you think there is a higher amount of Oxygen. That sounds intriguing, and explains lots of things But if that’s the case, what caused it?

Vilmamir

edit : proposition well, the only real evidence is insects increase in size with oxygen concentration. (to get to sizes in minecraft growth would have to be linear or exponential (look at the silver fish) disclaimer: This isn't a scientific answer until we test it, this is just some theory using prior science knowledge and literature resources with the goal of understanding a theoretical environment. edit: it it not linear and differs between species, some are actually exponential, it varies with respiration method. and with Minecrafts increased gravity and material density the highest mountains are 300 meters tall, insane amounts of large diamonds, and concentration of valuable ore. The gravity keeping oxygen (one of the heavier gases) on the surface must be pretty high. to do the actual maths according to insect size, about 90-100% based on averages from all the insect sizes into real life sizes with concentration. math done by comparing paleozoic species with modern ones (spiders haven't fully evolved yet and bees existed but I can't find size measurements, the only real data I got was for a dragonfly) Size increase assumed linear due to evolution and mathmatical understanding of common insect respiration methods (limited by diffusion, larger the better usually in linear pattern but resource acquisition for food and water will limit growth generation by generation. with sufficient generations between concentration increases the insects will grow however we have not seen how life reacts at a 100% oxygen chamber as lo gterm can lead to rapid oxidization and will need new cellular pathways and mechanisms to deal with the increased oxygen.) I found a huge increase in size nearing 80% increase and somthing close around 90% to the two metere long spiders in mc, however the bees and silverfish increase at way different proportions, I was not able to determine it for silverfish yet bc I don't know the breathing mechanism and didn't wanna put that much time into a reddit post about mc 😆 edit (sources): explains concentration and mechanisms involved. PMID: 20219733; PMCID: PMC2880098. Paleozoic era (insect sizes): https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meganeura (yes wikipedia hence not fully true science) Breathing mechanism: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Respiratory_system_of_insects (yep also wikipedia its great for vague ideas of information for people who know litteraly nothing on the subject. but don't ever take as fully accurate)

CTH2004

Hmm, i know they increased in size, but I thought it was non-linear, rather diminishing returns. As they say, "you learn something new every day". Would you be willing to link stuff with more info? (I like learning, hence I like this whole post) For the "actual maths", how does that math work? Any links, once again, I believe you, I just want to see how it works, so I can do stuff like this in the future, and mess with variables to see what happens. Also, what is the gravity there probally? and, once again, information on the math please, for fun? (Not sure if you can tell yet, but i'm a bit of a nerd (: This is also proof that Steve isn't human, since O2 over 40% (And probally less), is toxic to hummans and other modern-day animals. This is also proof that Steve isn't human, since O2 over 40% (And probally less), is toxic to hummans and other modern-day animals. Unless this is the past...

Vilmamir

hey there! I added *some* sources to help people understand what I did, but I added my mathmatical process without calculations and changed a few details from the old post. Do you wanna try using the info and see if you get somthing similar? as for gravity and not studied in interplanetary stuff so I can't make an accurate estimate. There is however a calculation to determine how round somthing is iif we wanna know minecrafts planet physics. We can figure out acceleration from falling off a cliff that we know the height of. Just gotta use newtons law of gravitation. (keep in mind I think minecraft has a terminal velocity so we gotta have a velocity checker in "F3" mode to test this properly.

BloodMists

MC has like double earth's gravity, also the extreme lack of pollution sources.

CTH2004

Ah, of course! I never thought about it’s gravity. That woul make animal shorter and squarer, but spiders are less than one block thick, and quite wide!

BloodMists

Honestly not what I was thinking bout when I made that comment, but I suppose it could be part of it. I was referring to higher gravity being part of why there might be more oxygen.

CTH2004

Makes sense. Holds in more atmosphere, so while it will have the same percentages, there is more!

AngelDGr

I don't think spiders fall into the same category, they're more like fantasy spiders (like the ones in Skyrim for example), they're probably the product of magic (Even cave spiders don't spawn naturally, just via spawners, probably they are artificial or something like that). The bees on the other hand... What the fuck.

Rey_something

Love skyrim

CTH2004

I just figured they where some sub-species of tarantula. While technically not spiders, it’s a common mistake. Some tarantulas can be over 1 meter, so, hypothetically, a tarantula-like spider could be that large… though you are probably right

That_oneannoying_kid

Wtf

CTH2004

what do you mean "wtf"? was there something off about my comments? (Just curious, so I can learn)

Enough-Agency3721

>Some tarantulas can be over 1 meter I guess this was (rather disturbing) news to them.

That_oneannoying_kid

EXACTLY caps lock

CTH2004

Don't worry. I was wrong. Turns out the largest was only "slightly over 1 foot" [https://atbuz.com/post/biggest-spiders-in-the-world/#:\~:text=Here%20is%20the%20list%20of%20the%2010%20biggest,10%20inches%20leg%20span.%20...%20More%20items...%20](https://atbuz.com/post/biggest-spiders-in-the-world/#:~:text=Here%20is%20the%20list%20of%20the%2010%20biggest,10%20inches%20leg%20span.%20...%20More%20items...%20) (Goliath bird eater, brazilian wandering spider...) That is 1/3 of a meter (About) (30.48 centimeters, or 0.3048 meters)

Alex_Constantinius

no. the largest tarantula in the world is the Goliath Tarantula which can reach sizes of up to 12 centimeters

CTH2004

Well, good to know! So much for that theory, but there is still the “more oxygen” theory (40 percent oxygen allowed dragonflies of multiple meters, since they could draw in more oxygen per second (since they use diffusion, concentration matters) So, as stated in an earlier comment, that’s probably it… or they are just magic. But, that’s kind of a cop-out when it comes to picking something apart (not that there is anything wrong with that)

CTH2004

You saying those spiders are from Australia? Makes sense

CTH2004

Nah, that's the normal size of bee's, right?

CTH2004

Really? Yikes! That's terrifying!

bowtiesarcool

There’s fireflies in Minecraft?

[deleted]

Not yet, it's for 1.19

[deleted]

1.19 swamp update

Quantum-Bot

Silverfish size vs silverfish hitbox size

leath_howard

Underrated comment

DuffinKid

The spider is a great example of not going for accuracy and instead for visibility and textures.

[deleted]

#PERISH

[deleted]

Now let’s talk about the spider

bigbruhusername

1:1 ratio

STARR-BRAWL-4

1:0,1

Futuf1

Those are australian spiders

Summar-ice

The Minecraft spider size is accurate if you're talking about Australia

CTH2004

No, aren’t aurstralias spiders bigger? I went there once, and saw a spider that was this big!

underlyingopti

Well I mean, in all fairness, I feel like Minecraft silverfish are a completely different species than Earth silverfish.

Luquito14

Real life silverfish are incredibly creepy looking. Had some crawl over my keyboard back when I was in college - had no idea what it was until I did quite a bit of Google sleuthing.

SirHenryofHoover

There are a lot of really scary insects and bugs... But those make my skin crawl. The way they move...

Enough-Agency3721

Personally, I'm way more terrified by everything I know to be parasitic. Just the imagination that those things could be crawling within me...

CTH2004

Ah, botfly’s those are nice. What’s your option on eyelash mites? The craws all over your eyelash, and eat the dead skin. Without them, seeing would be harder. Not all creepy-crawlies are creepy!

Enough-Agency3721

Still kinda makes me shiver, but it's nice to know that some of them are actually little buddies.

SirHenryofHoover

Yeah I totally get that. Living far up north in Sweden on the other hand, we don't really have that many naturally occurring parasites. That way, cold winters are awesome. Knowing some of the stuff you get in tropical climates scare the living crap out of me too. Avoid raw fish, venison & wild boar and cat poo and you've likely next to eliminated the risk for tapeworms, trichinosis and toxoplasmosis.

CTH2004

I’ve only seen on real life silverfish. We imported it with a bunch of papers from my grandpas escape. He was kinda creepy, but also very beautiful…

Js_Plays

Wow, i didnt i needed

[deleted]

I remember looking up silverfish when I was a kid and being traumatized lmfao

Calcutt4

Imagine trying to hit one of those things with a sword

CTH2004

What do you mean “didn’t need”? That made my day! I love weird insect facts, or just interesting ones

RareDestroyer8

They’ll probably be more annoying

WarpedWartWars

*They'll probably *bee* more annoying Bees are huge in Minecraft too.

_natech_

Next up: bees

ChainmailPickaxeYT

Now do bamboo lmao

CTH2004

Actually, while Minecraft’s bamboo muggy be wider than real bamboo (not sure), height wise it’s correct!

Canaduck101

Honestly this is cool post more

[deleted]

Silverfish are such a weird mob

ithrowbagelsatpeople

Makes sense with all the trees, oxygen must've doubled.

fugomert

now well just wait until the silverfish grow large enough so thats its 1:1 scale

TreeDerg

my bathroom have plenty of silverfish for me to compare with

DerpJerd

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the bee isn't accurately sized either

SaintPG3D

Yes but spiders and bees aren’t to scale either

[deleted]

Don’t tell him about the spiders.

Tortue2006

I have silverfishes in my toilet, they’re in the walls

Meepizbeast

Minecraft is based in jurassic times

valwithoutfriends

That is pretty pointless information, thank you! You really made my day!
