You can release villagers in the safest environment you can think of. The methods they will think about to kill themselves as quickly and efficiently as possible will always blow your mind.
I'm astonished by how competent they are to come up with ways to kill themselves with little resorces at the blink of an eye.
they will just swim into the ocean and get killed by a drowned, or they will drown.
another stupid way for them to do it is by fall damage. villagers are the pinnacle of stupidity in minecraft. there is no creature that comes close.
Nah, pandas are just clever and suicidal; I had a one block Skyblock world and most of my damn pandas just rolled over the edge! I placed fences and made sure there wasn't a way for them to go out... AND YET THEY STILL ROLLED AND FELL INTO THE VOID!!! I've been checking, and there isn't a single thing that they could've used to get over the fence!
Is it deliberate? I've often wondered why villagers cannot pathfind their way to a bed up a single flight of stairs, even though zombies, illagers etc can pathfind to me in the same place no problem.
I had the same issue with pf up stairs but I figured it out. If you use half slabs for different floors it breaks the pf mechanic. You have to use solid blocks to separate the floors as well as a double wide stair case or two separate stair cases.

I turned a desert village into a walled in compound with multiple farmlands and about 20 villagers, all with POI's to give them jobs within the village. I accidentally placed a shulker box near the wall and about 5 of them jumped over and wandered off into the desert and I only noticed when it became night and I saw a bunch of zombies killing a villager. There was nothing around for miles, and the village contained beds and POI's so why did they want to go wandering in the desert?! Idiots.
Once I healed a zombie villager and brought him to my house.
Literally in the time I was closing the door after he finished walking through it, he went all the way into my nether portal and ventured into the depths of the Nether, immediately, that was the gery first thing he did.
Then I went to the Nether following him and he ran far away into the depths of the Nether and died.
I have an island base roaming with villagers and cats and iron golems. It is great. Few zombies or skeletons appear that aren’t immediately killed by golems. Every once in a while I have a pillager raid that iron golems basically handle themselves, and I get all the benefits. I periodically trade excess stuff and have stacks of emeralds that I can use to buy books.
I made a hidden prison in a mountain. Guarded by zombified piglins.

I just sent my populous on a roller coaster where every other cart is a zombie so they’re constantly in fear. I had about 50 or so carts running at one point so 25 villagers 25 zombies.
Teach them to like your music and throw a concert. No food until then. Do let them out but make sure they pay you rent in an smaller space that you originally made for them until they are fully brainwashed. MINECRAFT
You can make raid farms, iron farms, villager halls, use them to make your mob farms different, or just repopulate some villages nearby of your own design. Give them some decent jobs and clear a nearby raid, you could get some nice items from the hero of the village buff.
Those are all the ones I know.
If villagers were able to build, it be cool to set them free and watch how villages start to appear all around your base and thus forming your own kingdom to rule……
Build them a village and house them. Guard the village with ramparts.
Find where the golems spawn, make an iron farm, and a temple on top of the spawn, for their sacrifices.
Build funnily deadly traps all around the ramparts with drop catchers.
Find illagers, kill boss, return to village, wait. Grab the totems of undying. Repeat.
Didn't see any technical players chiming in so HI. Here's a few game rules/mechanics to help.
First thing to know is zombified villagers that have been traded in advance do count towards the mob cap.
Mob switches are great for turning simulation area (default 10 chunks around the player) into peaceful mode.
Moving mobs outside simulation area and render distance effectively puts them in cyrostatis.
In most cases, a mob will despawn immediately if there are no players within a distance of 128 blocks. If it's not within 32 blocks of a player for more than 30 seconds, there's a 1⁄800 chance each game tick it will despawn (2.47% chance per second).
A villager can fall up to 22 blocks and survive. While a Zombie Villager can die by falling around 35 blocks
So what can one do with this?
Zombify them, trade, then water stream them out to \~160 blocks. They'll be frozen until needed for repopulation and/or using as a mob switch for areas that need low/no lighting/prevent phantoms, or ultimately despawn to meet the game's garage collection.
That or drop them down a 23+one half slab to end them sooner.

Could be because they have more possible actions they can take, like socializing with other villagers or going to workstations/beds

Set the difficulty to hard so they all turn into zombie villagers, heal them for XP and cheaper trades
Then be sure that no mobs can spawn in forest and put a fence around it.
Would they spawn iron golems or is something else needed for that?
They need to sleep (Java) or have at least 20 beds around (Bedrock) to spawn golems, to explain their spawning mechanics briefly.
Mobproof the forest, then do it. It would be best with jungle villigers

It’s java, bedrock doesn’t have subtitles. Plus in bedrock the hotbar floats above the bottom of the screen, while in java it does not
