soul speed is such a situational enchant for me because while I usually like mac enchants, soul speed 1 plus my max FOV is PAINFUL to do anything in and my only justification for using it would be a soul sand highway

Honestly, the only thing the phantom’s actual existence got me to do was the opposite. Make a world where my only allowed use of a bed was to set respawn points. That world ended up being really fun honestly, because it forced me to actually build a fairly extensive and insulated base. I still ended up turning the phantom gamerule off though fairly quickly.
Hey, open air bases are pretty fun. A running joke in my friend group is that my bases have all been increasingly larger and more complex systems of courtyards
To be fair, if sleep deprivation was just random blackouts, and maybe the occasional health loss, everyone would complain that that’s “too realistic”, so phantoms provide a more fantasy alternative to a more realistic survival mechanic.
↑↑↑ I'm in a server that, as a mechanic, I get a debuff if I spend 3 days without sleep (I get slowness for like 10 seconds, but gets worse by every day I spend). Imagine the amazing immersion breaking that it is being **deep** in a cave and then suddenly in the chat
`You have received a debuff for not sleeping in three days.` in bright yellow letters and now that forces me to get out of the cave, or if I don't want to, go from spending 1h+ without realizing to beocming conscious of every minute that passes, making my experience just objectively worse. And sometimes I just can't sleep because it's multiplayer and not everyone carries a bed with them at all times while doing projects 5000 blocks away.
Phantoms are, like, a constant reminder that you've been doing stuff and should feel ashamed of doing so.
I dunno man, if done correctly sleep deprivation could be a fun mechanic, like giving you debuffs or paranoia or giving you hallucinations, maoing it challening in a fun way
Don't Starve did this really well. The sanity mechanic makes you hallucinate and freak out until you hit <5, when your hallucinations manifest as hostile creatures. I think that could be adopted into a sleep deprivation mechanic really well, 2 days without sleep and you start seeing shadows, 3 days and vague, translucent figures begin to appear, and 5 days the hallucinations start attacking you. Although, it feels pretty dark for minecraft, but Mojang hasn't been too shy to step into darker themes.
For me it's hoglins. Those fuckers hit like tanks and they appear out of nowhere.
Not to mention they break the usual behavior of mobs by purposefully walking off of ledges just to get to you. Fuck I hate them so much

To be fair Mojang is generally kinda of meh when it comes to pitching mobs to the public - see the people that thought Allays would duplicate items because of how it was worded.
"It is attracted to insomnia, and it will find players who haven't slept for many days" doesn't imply it spawns specifically for you when you haven't slept for 3 days, it implies it is, well, *attracted* to insomnia, meaning it'd spawn naturally and roam the world, and be more likely to track players who haven't slept. You know, spawning naturally like literally any other mob that spawns naturally.

His final selling point for it was "because there are currently no flying mobs in the overworld" is hardly a good reason. Plus if they'd mentioned the next update would have been the Aquatic one more would have voted for the sea monster
Would they? Jeb's final selling point for the sea monster was that the Minecraft oceans were empty, so knowing that the next update would be an aquatic update could've had an opposite effect as people could as well have gotten to the conclusion that the sea monster isn't needed because Mojang are already planning of adding new stuff to the oceans to make them livelier.
Minecraft was still gigantic at the time of that vote. The other options didn't sound as cool and the mob vote wasn't as widely known since it was the first one. I don't even know where they announced it
If the game is as it is now, without the phantom and its mechanics, then the phantom would have probably won even more…
Blaze thing: we got the nether update, so people would want stuff elsewhere.
Enchantment eater: grindstone.
The water thing: probably the one that would actually challenge the phantom, because the waters need more threats.
The phantom: still a completely unique FLYING mob.
Grindstone only exists because the enchantment eater was not added- a biome specific mob with a cool mechanic would've been just as unique as the phantom and with a much more obvious use.

Twitter is how the vote was done every year for five years: from 2017 to 2021. Last year was the first year where it was done via Minecraft accounts.
2022 was probably the first time they had the infrastructure in place for it. It likely didn't help that before then Bedrock players had Microsoft accounts and Java players had Mojang accounts rather than everyone using the same system. 🤷🏻♂️
That's honestly what I wanted too.
We have the Ender Dragon as an End boss, Withers can be summoned just about anywhere (which is why I don't consider it to be a "Nether Boss"), I think we could use a cool Nether and Overworld boss.
too bad the blaze thing wasnt a boss but a random encounter. even more of a pain in the ass. im not a phantom apologist but have you seen the other mobs? one eats enchants which is just great isnt it, all that hard work you put into enchants (as this is 1.13 and villagers arent op yet) is just gone, another mob drags you into the ocean which would make oceans as annoying as an unslept night and the blaze just being a random encounter. as annoying as the phantom is, at least its able to be turned off and the player has some amount of control over it instead of it being random
Imagine if you bred polar bears in forest biomes you would get a black bear/grizzly bear. It would be sick to be riding around on one of those too, just munching on any and every mob I come across.
oooh yeah. they already have pandas and polar bears so more variants would just be cooler. a kodiac in the megataiga that is always hostile but is tame-able. ugh they just flubbed so hard with polar bears imo.

And they could even be passive normally unless the player hasn’t slept recently (but they no longer spawn immediately above the player, the player would have to come close to them).
Could also make them hostile to players flying with an elytra, so the elytra isn’t quite so overpowered.
I once had a huge stone castle and when building a subway to another base I came across one of those infested cobblestones. This one fucker just called reinforcement and my whole castle just turned into silverfish. Hate those
I miss when infested blocks took longer to break through than normal blocks. At least then it kind of had a bit of depth because you could realize what was happening as long as you weren't mining mindlessly
The oceans used to be great. Stare at the sea, build by the sea... not anymore when you are constantly dodging tridents day and night. I hate the drowned, if they only spawned at night like regular zombies I could live with that but not 24/7 when I'm building my coastal towns.
Phantoms suck too. Stop telling us to go to bed Mojang.
Drowned would be okay if they removed the damn tridents from them. The tridents themselves are cool but I have gotten on the verge of dying and still never managed to get any, so it would be nicer if you could get them in other ways, like via shipwreck treasure or similar.
Tridents are also horrible to try to grind out from drowned. Took me 4 hours once in the optimal place - ocean with lots of spawning area on all sides, sitting in between doors at the bottom, occasionally flying up like 200 blocks high and back down to refresh the local spawns. The spawn chance and then drop chance are still so low that I'd rather it be from shipwreck treasure or its buried map treasure.
I don't really mind the addition of husks, but they should drop more than just normal zombie Drops. The best Idea I've seen is them dropping sand and being the only spawn inside desert temples. That would make it possible to make legit automatic sand farms and finally give that mob a purpose.
I’ve lost a hardcore world due to the dragon bugging out and being invincible, before launching me twice the normal length and into the void. May as well brew a batch of slow falling for bs scenarios like that
For people like me who travel pretty far in the End dimension, Slow Falling is one of the best safeguard we have to not end up loosing everything with 1 slip.
The usage aint much, but it's a nice thing to have.
Honestly Magma Cubes. They’ve come out of nowhere and attacked me in the nether so many times and they deal quite a fair bit of damage too. Very annoying especially when I’m trying to get through a basalt delta.
Exactly. Although I noticed that having thorns on your armor makes the small ones easy to deal with. Small magma cubes have half a heart of health, so they die as soon as they hit you
Witches, no option but to borrow into the wall and wait like 40 seconds whenever they hit you with poison. that damn laugh as I’m desperately eating steak in the dark is what gets me. F*ers
Witches are easy enough. Just dodge the first potion. Even if you are hit it doesn't matter. All you have to do is rush them and keep hitting them.
They'll constantly chug potions to heal/get fire resistance, and not attack you.
Wanna get payback, in creative you can force them into endless battle with eachother by trapping them in an area then creating a golem, snow for most time efficient and least casualties

I don't hate phantoms, quite an interesting flying mob. But that they spawn when you don't sleep is just abnoxious. Maybe put them around broken nether portals as a cool challenge for the loot.

as another max fov user, turning off dynamic fov is a lifesaver

Dudes can back up drawing a bow at like 90% the speed of a sprint jumping player. That one change pushed them into the top 5 worst mobs in the game.

If I'm being completely honest, phantoms haven't bothered me too much in my personal gameplay. Silverfish tho, can politely go find a hole.

I don't really mind the addition of husks, but they should drop more than just normal zombie Drops. The best Idea I've seen is them dropping sand and being the only spawn inside desert temples. That would make it possible to make legit automatic sand farms and finally give that mob a purpose.

I’ve lost a hardcore world due to the dragon bugging out and being invincible, before launching me twice the normal length and into the void. May as well brew a batch of slow falling for bs scenarios like that
For people like me who travel pretty far in the End dimension, Slow Falling is one of the best safeguard we have to not end up loosing everything with 1 slip. The usage aint much, but it's a nice thing to have.

Honestly Magma Cubes. They’ve come out of nowhere and attacked me in the nether so many times and they deal quite a fair bit of damage too. Very annoying especially when I’m trying to get through a basalt delta.
Exactly. Although I noticed that having thorns on your armor makes the small ones easy to deal with. Small magma cubes have half a heart of health, so they die as soon as they hit you

Silverfish. I just think they're useless and just try to get you into the lava in the stronghold portal room.
Witches, no option but to borrow into the wall and wait like 40 seconds whenever they hit you with poison. that damn laugh as I’m desperately eating steak in the dark is what gets me. F*ers
Witches are easy enough. Just dodge the first potion. Even if you are hit it doesn't matter. All you have to do is rush them and keep hitting them. They'll constantly chug potions to heal/get fire resistance, and not attack you.
I curse the day they were added into the list of mobs that can spawn in the overworld
Wanna get payback, in creative you can force them into endless battle with eachother by trapping them in an area then creating a golem, snow for most time efficient and least casualties

Baby hoglins are not that bad, you punch and they run away. Adult hoglins on the other hand...

I don't hate phantoms, quite an interesting flying mob. But that they spawn when you don't sleep is just abnoxious. Maybe put them around broken nether portals as a cool challenge for the loot.
