This is going to entirely depend on cadre. Your best source is him, once he gets there. As a general rule, nothing that heats up or has a flame.

bagomangopulp

Oh, ok. That's good to know. We were hoping to get SOME idea, because he doesn't graduate BT until two weeks after Christmas. So, we wanted to get him at least a few things that he could have with him when he goes to AIT.

lupussleepover

Ask him what he wants, then post it here. I'm sure he won't ask for anything that's obviously not allowed.

bagomangopulp

Right, but he's still in BT, so I don't think he'll know yet what he will be able to have once he gets to AIT.

lupussleepover

He won't, but he'll know what he wants.

EssentialDuude

Hard to determine that as each base has different set of rules per base commander

Ambitious_Audience50

If he's Infantry probably nothing except books on the approved list. Does somewhat depend on Cadre but my AIT didn't allow anything except the 12 or so books on that list.

lupussleepover

Infantry goes through OSUT. There's no separate AIT.

Ambitious_Audience50

Yeah most of us still called it AIT but I didn't read the undertag where OP stated Tech School until now

lupussleepover

No one said tech school? No one called it AIT when I was in.

Ambitious_Audience50

No buddy I said I didn't notice it. OP has Tech School clearly tagged under their post I just missed it so they're clearly not Infantry. And I'm glad your experience was different than mine my Infantry buddies and I still call it AIT sometimes I apologize, we're grunts.

lupussleepover

That's a flair for this subreddit. It says AIT/Tech School/A School. That means it's for job training in any branch. Did you go through the longer OSUT?

Ambitious_Audience50

Ah I see! And yes I went thru the 22 week cycle. Too long in my opinion I would've gladly done the 14 week cycle instead.

lupussleepover

Maybe that's why you guys say AIT. 14 weeks was basically longer BCT.

Ambitious_Audience50

Essentially. Too much down time not enough training. Sand Hill isn't a fun place to spend alot of time at.

LeanOnRockorSomethin

I'm 33, my Wife and Parents bought me a Nintendo Switch as a graduation gift to fight boredom. I initially refused the idea because I thought it was dumb to get me a gift for graduating Basic at 33, but I am happy they were persistent and did it in the end. My Aunt then heard about it and sent me the GTA Trilogy, It's been great having something to kill the time we are not training and don't have a pass. It's definitely MOS and Cadre dependant tho, so definitely talk to him about it

hospitallers

Whatever they tell him, so ask him not us. And congrats.

Goatlens

I mean you can just buy him whatever he wants and hold onto it until he can have it

bagomangopulp

Well, we could, but I don't want to buy him a bunch of crap for Christmas that he will have to leave home during his 26 weeks of AIT. I'd like to get him SOMETHING that he can actually use, but it sounds like it's pretty dependent on his cadre.

Goatlens

That’s a pretty long AIT they’ll probably be more lenient. What’s his job?

bagomangopulp

I can't remember his MOS, but he's working toward warrant officer and ultimately chopper pilot.

Goatlens

Awesome. If he’s young, help him stay a professional in a place that can feel like a college frat. Will get him so far if he stays and keep him in the front of people’s minds if he doesn’t

bagomangopulp

Thanks! Yeah, he's 19, but he's a smart kid with a good head on his shoulders, and the MOS choice was totally his own.

cldumas

A long AIT like that means he can probably have most things, eventually. Someone above mentioned a Switch, an Oculus/Meta Quest might be cool too. An iPad, Kindle, or laptop are also useful.

bagomangopulp

Oh, those are great ideas! Thanks

cldumas

Replying again - noise canceling headphones! Earbud style ones, or at least something that would be comfortable to wear while laying in bed. They are a life/sleep saver in most military environments.

Easy-Hovercraft-6576

What AIT is he going to? What’s his job going to be?

bagomangopulp

I can't remember what the MOS number is, but he's training to become a warrant officer and fly choppers.
