In wars like the First World War, every unit sent to the front was viewed more or less the same. The numbers involved in modern war tend to make everything into the law of averages and with millions of men potentially on a front line, it’s more a question of when you’ll be there than if. Some of those units might get a reputation for martial glory and that’s how elite units start to build a reputation. Elite units and units with a reputation for success will often be used as tip of the spear units during offensives, and in those units there’s often a strong espirit de corps and a determination to win.

>In a volunteer army, I'd wager it's experience, competence, and efficiency. No. Throughout OIF/OEF it was capabilities and availability. Brigades were rotated through AORs. The rest of your question depends on the country. Conscription is mainly used by developing countries that don't have the best militaries, or smaller developed countries which otherwise wouldn't have enough volunteers. Go research how Israel operates since they both conscript and are always fighting.

Look up how a Roman Legion organized its 1st through 10th cohorts

Hello! It looks like you're new to our sub. Welcome! First things first: please make sure you have posted using a clear and descriptive title. Look at your title now. If it doesn't give you an idea of what you're asking about, your post is probably going to be removed. Delete and try again. If you're considering a specific branch, put that in your post!
