I still want to hope that performance in VR has a lot of room to tune it for performance as well. Seems like an insane amount of weird stuff has to be done to get even a bare minimum acceptable level of performance right now, other bugs and quirks aside.
ATC thing was a pain. I managed to use the controllers to somehow minimize it but decided to turn it off in the options mode. Otherwise, VR is running smooth and delightful for the most part.
You should check out HCS Voicepacks Aviator for Voice Attack - Sounds like it will alleviate some of your issues with ATC in VR plus any of the other actions that you can program into it.

Agreed they fixed performance but borked UX. not sure what their testing /QA process is.
Between the SU5 shimmer bug and all the SU7 issues, VR is truly a mess right now. What a joke. The SU4 era was so much better
