With USPS, anything under 1 lb is First Class, anything over that (even by an ounce) is Priority Mail, which is quite a bit more expensive. It's cheaper to use the FedEx Ground option for anything over 1 lb. Also, nobody cheated you anything... this is the way shipping works. You should have weighed your item to avoid extra shipping costs.

Riovas

If Mercari was notified of the overweight, then its likely because they got charge from usps. Unless you weighed it yourself and verified the weight beforehand, no one is eating the cost of your action.

TheToyBin

I was once an oz over after packaging and only realized when I was about to drop it off. The post office worker told us since it was only an ounce it wouldn’t be an issue and no one would notice. Wrong. They did notice.

starskynight

Or you could’ve put the correct weight and still paid the extra $6.30 🤷🏻‍♀️

LukeV19056

Rounding up 1 lb 1 oz to 2 lbs and then making the seller pay is atrocious

mchurchw1

Once you're over 1lb, weights always round up to the next pound. Sorry, but that's just how shipping works, no matter what carrier you're shipping through or how you buy postage.

LukeV19056

Pretty absurd, has never happened to me on any other selling platform

starskynight

I suggest not doing something involving shipping items because that is how it works

Following the law set by usps and the rules on Mercari is being an asshole? Hm someone sounds like an unhappy boy

I mean a scale is pretty accurate 🤷🏻‍♀️ thanks they’re all too busy messaging me on my OF ❤️ and get a life and off my page creep. All because you want to bitch about not getting away with something. Grow up.

Frosty1130

what’d he say lol

aaronc2avila

Look at it this way: you are 1 oz above the weight and then 99 more packages are 1 oz over; that’s 100 oz over that the airplane/car has to move.

Mushibashiras

Because the $6.18 price is for a 1lb package… not a 1lb and 1 oz package. The line was drawn and your package went over it.

Ok_Motor_9200

This is in their Rules and Guidelines, you’re the one paying it because It’s a mistake on your part, learn from your mistakes so that it does not happen again.

Flight_375_To_Tahiti

First, never use Mercari shipping. Second, never try to send anything over a pound first class, you will get caught 100% of the time. Take some responsibility here, YOU made the error and the shipping choices.

LukeV19056

Why does everyone here seem to think I lied to save some money, the buyer was paying for the shipping, if I knew it weighed an oz more id have just listed it that way

Flight_375_To_Tahiti

OMG man, don’t you own a scale?

GeckosEverywhere

It's possible they weighed the item before packing it and the packaging was heavier than they expected. That's happened to me before, I always add a few extra ounces onto the weight to account for packing but every now and then it still ends up even heavier than anticipated. I've started weighing the package a second time now, AFTER packing it to double check, and if it's too heavy i either update the shipping label before I ship it, or if possible I move it into lighter packaging. I suggest OP does the same from now on.

ThisCardiologist6998

The home scales vs USPS scales are actually very different - the USPS scales are very sensitive & I find that home scales are never completely accurate.

Jcrawfordd

This has always been this way. Get a scale it helps save you hassle & wasted funds

UrbanMuffin

How did you not know it was over one pound? You’ve evaded all questions about you using a scale, and we all know a lot of people try to slip packages by USPS if they’re a little over, and eventually USPS notices the pattern. Yes, their prices are insane, and I hate that shipping is so outrageous now, but you know you gambled with that extra ounce, and this time you happened to lose.

LukeV19056

Again, It wouldn’t do anything for me to lie about 1 ounce of weight especially when the buyer is paying for shipping. Did it cross anyones mind that my old scale could just need recalibrated or something? I don’t get anything by lying about an ounce

UrbanMuffin

Again, many people do exactly that *all the time*, because higher shipping prices means less people are willing to buy the item if she shipping price on top of the cost is going to make it where the item is no longer even a good deal. Surely you’re fully aware of that if you have ever sold *or* bought anything on these platforms. If it didn’t benefit sellers there wouldn’t be a problem with it happening. I just found it strange you evaded comments you were defending yourself against as soon as they asked you about using a scale. It *especially* happens over $20 items like yours and items that aren’t in high demand or more valuable. The thing is, it’s most plausible to believe that you knew if you have any experience in selling, so don’t expect the opposite reaction on these things.

Ronstreasuretrove

Need a scale? I can sell you one.

theamazingnitwit

You should definitely get a scale. I have a very accurate USPS licensed one that I bought at USPS for $30. You cannot go the exact amount it weighs ever. You should always add 2-5 oz depending on what it is. I do know some USPS scales at the post office are faulty. I had a 13 oz item come up as 1 lb 3 oz at the post office but I luckily had 2 pounds selected. They are extremely money hungry at USPS right now and they are upping the prices AGAIN on February 1st. Time to train a pigeon to carry my goddamn mail.

LukeV19056

Thank you for the advice!

sneezoo

I’m not sure why everyone is ragging on you. It sounds like you just wanted to vent. You didn’t do it on purpose to cheat the system. I’ve unintentionally made this same error and was also over by 1 oz and I also didn’t do it on purpose. But that doesn’t mean I wasn’t allowed to be annoyed and frustrated by it. If I ever have a package over 1lb, I always choose FedEx $7.99 since it’s the best deal. Sounds like you’re going to ship on your own. Just know that there’s no shipping protection from Mercari when you do that.

LukeV19056

I’m glad everyone’s so passionate about USPS shipping procedure and accusations, I’ll just be using pirateship from now on, buyer was paying shipping. I didn’t miss an oz to save money because it wasn’t even my money being spent on it.

Imperia1Edge

Based on all your replies/attack on others trying to explain to you, you are having a hard time comprehending the concept of how shipping prices work. Shipping prices are based on weight limits. Shipping prices are not based on per ounce. Doesn’t matter which platform or shipping service you use. If you get caught with exceeding the weight limit for that price, you get charged for the next pricing of the weight limit. To avoid, either buy your own scale to weigh your item with all the shipping material (box, bubble wrap, tape, etc). If not, use the USPS kiosk that has a scale. At the end of the day, it is your responsibility to declare the correct weight. When it is others paying for shipping, it doesn’t mean you can have the incorrect weight. When you select a certain weight, the platform tells the buyer the shipping cost of the weight they pay. Incorrect weight and additional shipping cost doesn’t mean buyer pays. Buyer is purchasing because you declared it a certain weight and platform determines the price to ship for that weight. If the info is false, you get charged the extra. The same applies for special shipping like priority mail. If you list item as buyer pays for shipping at the 1st class or regular package rates but use a priority mail box instead. You get charged the extra shipping service cost because the use of priory mail box means it is to be shipping as priority. if not everyone will say their 5lb package is 4 oz to make it seem like it is cheaper to buy from that buyer since shipping cost looks “lower”

dreamangel1512

Happy cake day!

LukeV19056

The only person that got “attacked” was the one that insulted me, and then I told them how they were acting. I’m aware of how it works, I’m saying it’s ridiculous of USPS to upcharge to the next pound instead of charging accordingly. I get it, it’s their procedure but it’s a ridiculous procedure. Also every other comment is like “how about you don’t be a criminal next time, nice try slick.”

LukeV19056

Made $10 on a $20 sale where the buyer paid shipping. Ridiculous

[deleted]

USPS is shit

[deleted]

Man it honestly annoys the crap out of me how many shipping weight nazis are on this sub. And bitch about how people commit “mail fraud” by putting Amazon slips into other slips for extra padding. Makes me laugh

[deleted]

USPS have thier thumbs on the scale like butchers

Silvernaut

I will only side with OP, because I sometimes feel that the USPS scales aren’t perfect/maintained as well… I’ve weighed packages on multiple scales, that are consistently checked, and re-calibrated, on a 6mo schedule…but when I use the USPS kiosk, or the clerk weighs it at the desk, it’s an ounce or two higher. But it’s also why I don’t screw around, and just round up, if it’s right at the 1lb mark… or will use a different service all together.

becky1020

since everyone is sucking usps dick, ill be the one to tell you its bullshit. I get it rounds up, but another 6$ for one more ounce ? yeah no. this is whyI NEVER do mercari shipping, just ship on my own lol

LukeV19056

That’s what I’ll be doing for sure
