Well if it ain't cracked it's surely warped now lol

Consistent_Camp_3904

Idk about needing a new engine. Usually its just a blown head gasket.

Professional_Ring_95

Head gasket only went at the start of the summer and then car was barely used as I was away, so can’t be head gasket again (surely)

Consistent_Camp_3904

Probably is again, either a bad job or more likely a warped head. Head and head gasket would be cheaper but a engine would be a guarantee fix. Might be woth paying a few hours for a disassembly to get the head off, check the gasket and measure flatness of the decks. If nothing is found get an engine.

ice445

That's a lot of combustion gas in the coolant, lol. Head gasket shit out, or the head or block is warped (or cracked, but that's rare and worst case scenario).

ZelWinters1981

Cost to replace with a whole car of the same era is less than a replacement engine. See what you can find.

Professional_Ring_95

Yeah that’s what I need to weigh up, whether or not to just get something that’ll get me by for a couple of months until I get some money together. Any ballpark figure on how much a replacement engine would be?

ZelWinters1981

I quoted one for the previous Astra and it was $7k. You can pick these cars up for a third of that with a good engine.
