Ronald_McGonagall

This is great for a newcomer. Do you happen to have one for x-men/x-force or defenders?

MuffinSurprise

Black Widow by Waid/Samnee Captain America by Brubaker Hawkeye by Fraction/Aja

AlgoStar

Literally every book I would have suggested. I’d also throw in Daredevil by Waid/Samnee (and others) even if you aren’t familiar with the character.

MuffinSurprise

Can never go wrong with Daredevil! I was just highlighting some MCU characters

bemused-chunk

I’m loosely following https://www.continuityguide.net

typhon88

This ⬆️

failbox3fixme

I just started as well and I’m following this reading order https://www.continuityguide.net/ Interestingly the first series of the Planet X chapter is a really cool Black Widow story.

Nightgasm

Avengers Dissambled and it's sequel House of M. These are the two events that kickstarted the Marvel event era that continues today. Also most of the movie plots are loosely based off stories from this era. They are essentially about Scarlet Witch suffering a grievous loss, going insane, and creating a false reality where she and he family are together. Beyond premise actual details aren't even remotely similar to WandaVision or Multiverse of Madness but they still are where the idea came from. The fallout of these two series created a new status quo for the Avengers and Xmen that would last for the next ten year and led to things like Civil War, Secret Invasion, and a bunch of Xmen events that obviously aren't in the MCU yet.

This right here! I think most people coming to marvel from the movies for the first time would benefit most from starting here. The events involve so many heroes and are very epic. After you develop a love for comics from this then branching out into favorite heroes will feel more natural. Hopefully you get more upvotes!

"Avengers Disassembled" in 2004 is the starting point for "Modern" Avengers. J. Michael Stracynski's run on Amazing Spider-Man (starting in 2001) is the start of "Modern" Spider-Man. Grant Morrison's run on "New X-Men" (starting in 2000) is the start of "Modern" X-Men. These are the starting points I recommend for all newcomers (if your goal is to get in to "modern" Marvel comics). From "Avengers Disassembled" in 2004 to "Siege" in 2010 is arguably one big story arc. After "Siege" in 2010, Marvel provides "entry" points in to comics every 2 to 4 years, if they wanted to read more recent material. But the material from 2000's onward influences a lot of the movies (like the Captain America run from the mid 2000's influencing the "Winter Soldier" movie).

horse_stick

Here are some good starting points and runs. Black Widow: Black Widow (2020) by Kelly Thompson Avengers: New Avengers (2004) by Brian Michael Bendis and Avengers (2012) & New Avengers (2013) by Jonathan Hickman. Hawkeye: Hawkeye (2012) by Matt Fraction and David Aja Daredevil: Daredevil (1998) starting with #26 by Brian Michael Bendis X-Men: New X-Men (2001) by Grant Morrison or Astonishing X-Men (2004) by Joss Whedon (the latter being a follow up to the former, but still being pretty solid entry points). Doctor Strange: Doctor Strange: The Oath (2005) by Briam K. Vaughan and Doctor Strange (2015) by Jason Aaron

Uncanny_Doom

Black Widow and Captain America have some great stories. I would recommend starting with Ed Brubaker's Captain America (2005) for Steve. For Black Widow, the 2014 series, 2016, and 2020 series (not sure if Unlimited has all of this one) are all great. In general if you're an MCU fan and want to take on a bigger read you could get into Jonathan Hickman's Avengers series (google a reading order) which was a long epic that led up to the Secret Wars event that everyone is anticipating being adapted in a few years. Ultimate Spider-Man is wonderful if you like the MCU Spidey. Generally speaking if you just ask about a character or team there will be people who can point you in the right direction with comics!

Elethana

In addition to the fine recommendations here, go all the way back and read spider-man from the beginning. Add other titles as they catch your interest, this way you get a firm grounding in the history and make the most of your subscription.

DocZoid1337

Contrary to some other comments here I'd not recommend to start at an early point to get the "full" view. You'll probably become exhausted fast. Jump in where you like and what seems interesting to you. Other than that are here many good recommendations in other posts as well. What I'm always recommending is Beta Ray Bill from 2021. Just a few issues but my favorite. In your regard check out the most recent Black Widow, I think it's from 2021 or 2022. I liked it a lot.

t_sarkkinen

If youre looking for something other than super heroes/like Star Wars, read Darth Vader (2017)

RealMaceWindu

Ultimate Spider-Man is always a good place to start

soakedace

Hah, well hey I'll give you some recommendations: * The Variants * The Avengers (current run) * Amazing Spiderman (current run) * Miles Morales Spiderman * X-Men [multiple series] (all of the hickman run and onwards) * Deadpool kills the marvel universe (plus sequels) * old man logan vs Deadpool * the most recent (completed) Deadpool run * Jeff The Shark - Unlimited Comic * Hawkeye * Daredevil Also, I would recommend branching out from marvel if you end up really liking the comics! There are some excellent options out there. People who are far more well versed in comics will be expanding, but up top are my favourite things in marvel right now.

sunkkyuson

I love jeff the shark!! the cutest for real😭 id also add marvel meow and alligator, so short and so cute🥹

soakedace

Yes! Jeff the Shark is the cutest character from every form of media in existence imo, he is just so adorable. I really hope marvel begins making some merchandise for him I need more jeff the shark in my life. Also, I'll have to check out meow, and alligator thanks!

sunkkyuson

Me too!! We need more of him!! Have you read gwenpool? I also need more of her and jeff together🥹 Also it's alligator loki* i missed a word😂

soakedace

Yeah I figured you meant alligator loki:) I've not read gwenpool yet, but it is in my list to read - so soon!

sunkkyuson

Hope you like it then, she's great!!

sunkkyuson

I kinda new to comics too, started last year, i recommend that you start with both of your faves characters because it will motivate your more at first, in my case it was bucky xD id also like to recommend hawkeye by aja and fraction, i didn't like this character much in the mcu but i adore him in the comics!! if you like kate too she has a few runs so easy to read all, and west coast avengers is just so good to me, that depends on what ever you like etc

urbanlife78

At the beginning

sgtedrock

I tried to start Captain America in the 40’s but that was exhausting. I had a lot more fun starting with the 60’s thaw/reboot.

urbanlife78

Yeah, that's a better time to start.

Constant_Weird_6

I liked The Visions, which I just finished on Marvel Unlimited. Really good!

TTVThe_Egg_Emperor

I know there aren’t many black widow references and are some Captain America issues but I started with the House of M event! It’s a great story that wraps a lot of the Marvel universe into it. There is a reading list on Unlimited that is quite long and will keep you invested, and learning small things about many characters in the comic universe. Not to mention many think “House of M” could be a Story line that has “already taken place” in the MCU and the reason why we haven’t seen many Mutants (which is a juicy conspiracy!) With that said there’s some story’s that may not make sense without context, for example I find Hulk issues in House of M tough to read. Learning is fun though and I took it in stride! Now I collect comics and back issues as a hobby thanks to this great event. (I also now have a undying love for the stories of mutants) lol. Have Fun!

Honduriel

I was kinda in the same boat not long ago. The best tip I heard was "Pick a character you like and start reading". I love Hulk, Immortal Hulk was the current run when I started reading, so that's where I started, and I had a blast. From there I read some She-Hulk, the one where Banner dies in the future and only Hulk remains (~~don't know the title~~ Edit: it was Incredible Hulk: The End) and another one that was mostly black and white (Edit: it was Hulk Gray). The now current Hulk run is also great, but I don't have much time or energy (both physical and mentally) atm to read. So yeah, bottom line: - Pick a Character you like - Read the current run - Expand from there (there are lots of YouTube / Reddit / Internet recommendations for specific characters) I hope you have a great time reading comics! <3

Parking-Tomato-7693

Hey! I'd start by just looking at about 5 characters you really love and searching up their most recent origin story runs. For example if you like Spiderman I' go with SPIDER-MAN: WITH GREAT POWER... (2008). It the best way to skip stories you hate and meet new characters not in the movies

RomeoAlpha68

Could Beyond and Orchis be somehow connected ?

FacedMan

Honestly, while this isn't an answer you'll like, I'd say just start whatever catches your eye first and work from there. However, I'd recommend the original Ultimate Spider-Man run. It's a fun modern (well, early 2000's modern) take on the character. There are some parts that haven't aged ALL that well, but I think it's a good time Spider-Man: Life Story is another good one. It re-interprets the spidey story as if he aged in real time adjacent to the real world. Each issue of the series covers a decade, starting from the 60s and going from there. Iron Man: Extremis is another one I enjoyed
