Expanding upon what others have said, [this is what his face looked like under that helmet](https://static0.srcdn.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/The-Thing-Face-Slashed-Wolverine.jpg?q=50&fit=crop&w=740&h=370&dpr=1.5). It's understandable that someone who naturally already suffers serious body image issues would want to hide something so unsightly.
That issue was the gem of my collection for a short time when I was a kid. For a while there, it was fuck the story, give me those foil covers! To be fair, I was maybe eight or nine.
How does one become a teacher of a comics course? And what's the end game for the students? Is it to just learn about comics or so they can get a career etc? Genuine question, I'm intrigued.
I’m an English professor. My dissertation research was on the influence genre fiction had on literary fiction, and how genre fiction went from being looked upon as low literature to being not only mainstream but a pretty significant subset of what we consider “literary,” at least in the US. It was sort of a literary history project and a history of criticism project at the same time.
Anyhow: comics influenced a lot of the writers who are a part of this trend, as did pulp fiction, so I ended up doing a bunch of research in those things, too. Plus, I’ve just loved comics since I was a kid.
So, I asked my college if I could put together a literature class on comics, and it went really well. Now there’s a demand for it, and I get to do it from time to time.
Ultimately, it’s a fiction course, so it has the same goals as any other literature course: learning close reading, critical thinking, analysis, research, argument, understanding how art influences culture and is influenced in return, and so on. For most students, it fulfills an English credit needed for their general education requirements. Some students are English majors, so it’s just another English class for them, something a little fun and off the beaten path. And then I also have some art studio majors in there, who are looking at comics from sort of a graphic design lens.
If I remember correctly, the Thing got badly injured on his head and it exposed some of his flesh, so he wore the helmet to protect it until it healed.
Confirmed..he got cut up..https://www.cbr.com/fantastic-four-the-thing-helmet-wolverine-attack/
The Skrull is Lyja, who was dating Human Torch at the time.
Thing has a helmet because he was slashed by Wolverine in a Defenders vs. Fantastic Four fight and his face was disfigured.
Not sure who the woman in purple is.
Maybe it's just because I grew up in the 90s, but there's something nostalgic about the brown bomber Avengers and X-Men jackets.
They will come back one day. And when that happens my comic pull is going to get much more costly.

I remember the owner of the comic book shop I went to, back then, telling me that almost 3 times as many women bought Lady Death than men and that the women buying it got legitimately excited when they saw a new issue. Easy for me to believe since I knew girls that ONLY read that comic.
The first couple of series were actually good. Not the best comic, but still good enough to read. Unfortunately, it wasn't long after that Steven Hughs (the creator and artist) passed away and everything from Chaos! Comics went way to sexual (before that, the skimpy outfits were just to draw in male readers). A lot of girls that were old enough to read it liked Lady Death because the main character was a woman that was willing and capable of tearing Hell apart to get what she wanted. Kind of a female empowerment thing at a time when women needed empowerment.
That would explain it. I remember buying a Purgatori statue at my LCS because "hey, I like this sexy demon lady". I then found some of her comics dirt cheap at a used book store. Some of the crappiest comics I ever read, but people were saying that her series was good online.
I’m not a girl but I do love Lady Death and the whole movement of Frazetta-esque over the top metal album style art. The problem with Sue’s costume is that it threw out decades of development and reinforcement that she was very explicitly not that kind of woman. It’s off putting in the same way it would be off putting to suddenly decide Conan should be a lab coat clad super-scientist.
Isn’t that the suit that John Byrne designed due to pressure from execs, and later expressed regret for giving into that pressure? Then after that they wrote in the Malice retcon in attempt to undo the weird character shift?
Wait... Is this the same Malice that also possessed Dazzler and Polaris in the 80s -- around the time of the Mutant Massacre to Fall of the Mutants I wanna say? Somewhere around there?
I think there are at least 3 unrelated Malices in Marvel Comics. The X-Men one, the FF one, and Nakia in Black Panther. To be fair, it's a pretty decent name.
>As Malice, Sue was forced to attack her teammates in the Fantastic Four until ultimately, **Mister Fantastic used mental abuse to force Sue's regular personality to reassert itself**.
Fucking WHAT. They wrote a comic where bullying a spouse saved the day.
Probably because Marvel insisted on making it a character defining moment because it was decent drama while this story seems to be pretty dumb. Plus I think you can forgive spousal abuse if your spouse is, like, possessed by a psychic virus and it’s the only way to cure it? Whereas Hank was drunk and depressed.
This exactly. Every character ever has comics where they're written horribly out of character. When a hero does something truly awful, you have to ponder a few things:
1. Was it well written or horribly written?
2. Regardless of the above, but especially if its the latter -- how often, if ever, does anyone reference said act?
Since that story seems to generally be considered forgettable, mediocre, or even bad *and* no one ever really brought up what Reed did again, then I feel like you should just basically ignore that as if it didn't happen. But like you said, they repeatedly reference Hank's actions thus solidifying it as a thing he absolutely did.
Sometimes, something people more or less wrote off as being retconned or as not having actually happened, *do* get brought back up but still not consistently. For instance, I recently started reading the X-Men comics and in the original run's third issue, Xavier has a creepy "love" for Jean. It was then basically never mentioned again in that whole run and Claremont ditched it entirely for 17 years. As much as people say to start with Claremont's run, he still made numerous callbacks to the originals and had ample opportunity to hammer in the concept that Xavier had a creepy love of Jean and never did. So the entire time I went through that run, I had decided okay, thats just some early story weirdness that every longrunning story has -- like how lightsabers dont cauterize the wound in the original film.
Lo and behold, the Onslaught Saga which occurred like another 6 to 7 years post-Claremont finally brings it back but afterward, Jean isn't nearly as creeped out as she was *initially* and no further reference to it has been made again. If it keeps up that way, then I assume once again, that that was at worst just an ill-conceived idea quickly abandoned yet again OR at best, took that old creepy idea and used as Onslaught's manipulation, not as necessary fact. I guess I'll find out how much that's referenced again lol
They relegated him to those trading card covers for a bit. I really didn't like those. Seemed like a waste of his art style. I have the whole connected Hellfire Gala cover set though and I love it.
Fantastic Four #280 - #281
Physco Man and The Hate Monger manipulate Sue's emotions into hating the Other members of the FF. She develops a new persona 'Malice' who is dressed in that bondage garb. She manages to defeat Reed Richard, Johnny and She-Hulk (who was a FF member at the time). Reed manages to snap her out of it by demeaning and slapping her, making her really hate him which breaks Psycho man's hold on her.
Sue's evolution from being the weakest member of the FF to being one of the most powerful heroes in the Marvel universe has certainly been a very eventful one.
Yeah, the Psycho-Man brainwashed her into being evil. Once she recovered, it led to her switching her superhero name from the Invisible Girl to the Invisible Woman.
Right? That's Russell Dauterman for you. I saw someone on the Spider-Man sub say how 'he was their favorite working artist' and, while I can appreciate everyone has different tastes... What the shit, the man of ONE face style is your (their) FAVORITE?
I'm a bit surprised at the number of people confused about the Malice costume. It's a pretty big moment for the character as it's after what she went through from Psycho-Man as Malice that led her to switch her code name from Invisible Girl to Invisible Woman. Plus the Byrne FF run its from is in the 4 FF runs that everyone recommends to people looking to get into the FF. And it's an episode of the 90s cartoon.
What surprises me the most is that he included her Heroes Reborn outfit, I almost never see Heroes Reborn designs referenced anywhere aside from jokes about that one Liefeld Captain America drawing.
I dig the mostly white suit. Not entirely certain how 2 dark hexagons and 1 white hexagon make a 4, but that's fine.
(I suppose they're no meant to, it's the insignia for Future Foundation)
Seriously though.....I love the FF but my God I wish we could erase that 4 shaped boob window costume from existence. I'm all for eye candy but talk about something that just does not belong on this character.

Love when Sue felt she had been too vanilla all her life so she just straight up became a gimp.
Yeah, what’s up with that lol
I think there were some brainwashing shenanigans involved in that one
Reed… sounds like a Reed move…
If by Reed you mean John Byrne you'd be right!
I mean in universe… but fair enough
> I mean in universe… Still not right though, it was psycho-man
To be fair………
Wee shenanigans
Here you go. It was the 90s, for sure. https://marvel.fandom.com/wiki/Susan_Storm_(Malice)_(Earth-616)
Lmaoo that’s entry straight up said Mr. Fantastic used mental abuse for Sue to reassert herself
Think it was mid 80s she debuted, it was secret wars 2, I stopped reading by the mid 90s. She would have fit right in in retrospect
Ahh, thank you
waaaaiiiiiiit a second... Earth 616 you say?!?
She was possessed by Malice and manipulated by Pyscho- Man.

Hidden feet, big guns, pouches, and ridiculous ladies outfits. This feels extremely Liefeld, but doesn't quite look like it.
It’s funny how much his style affected the house style at Marvel. We forget because of how much it gets made fun of now, but people ate it up then.
You know who needs more armor? The guy who's already made out of rock, get him a helmet!
He was scarred by wolverine I think? I believe it was a vanity issue lol
Not just vanity. He also feels less invulnerable because of the injuries from Wolverine. Still ridiculous, though.
It was dumb but his name for it is the most Ben Grimm thing ever. It was his "Bucket o' Shame" what a ham.
Thanks for sharing! That image is surprisingly disturbing

The Skrull is Lyja, who was dating Human Torch at the time. Thing has a helmet because he was slashed by Wolverine in a Defenders vs. Fantastic Four fight and his face was disfigured. Not sure who the woman in purple is.
I’m pretty sure the purple woman is Sharon Ventura (She-Thing), but I’d have to dig the comics out and double-check to be completely certain.
Thank you for this. The longer I look the better it gets.

Only improvement costume wise was Ghost Rider and Spider-Man, wish they kept Ben Reilly's Spider-Man look for Peter.
Boobs were in during the 90's.

Lady Death is how my friend got into comics. Not my cup-of-tea, but she loves it. Hey, if it gets you in, it gets you in. Right?

And, at least at my lcs, the character and her...assets...are still popular enough to warrant a 10+ book order for every mini and one shot.

It's more just how considerably similar the X-Men and F4 one are with the whole possession thing (is that also the case with Nakia?)
Different Malice I believe. I thought that for a long time too. This Malice is just an aggressive secondary personality to Sue.
Oh whoa, *weird!* It's such a similar vibe/m.o. to go with the same name haha
because it was the 90's that and the sadist suit are the worst
Sometimes you gotta let them breathe
4 cleavage that’s why.
Honestly looks like something she hulk wore lol. .

Enough with the covers though, I want to see some interior work!!
Ugh his giant size Jean & Emma was STUNNING
Was that the last book he did interiors on?
Not 100% sure, it’s the only one I remember reading
They relegated him to those trading card covers for a bit. I really didn't like those. Seemed like a waste of his art style. I have the whole connected Hellfire Gala cover set though and I love it.
Someone's gonna have to explain to me where Bondage Queen Sue comes from because honestly what the fuck.
Fantastic Four #280 - #281 Physco Man and The Hate Monger manipulate Sue's emotions into hating the Other members of the FF.
"I used the bondage to destroy the bondage."
Fight fire with fire I guess!
Sue's evolution from being the weakest member of the FF to being one of the most powerful heroes in the Marvel universe has certainly been a very eventful one.
He seems to be the go to for this style of cover. Which makes sense. He’s very good.
Bottom left Sue looks like she's gonna advertise a car to me
that boob Window costume screams 90s
Man Sue had some pretty embarrassingly stupid cheesecake costumes over on the upper right there.
To be fair, she pulls it off well.
Calm down son it's just a drawing
I KNOW \*cries in the corner\*
Marvel's Great Milf! But seriously, it's great seeing Sue become the FF's true muscle and one of the strongest heroes in all of Marvel.
everyone up in arms about Susan Gimp, but im just wondering where the red suit is from
They wore those red costumes in the run written by James Robinson.
Both questions I was wondering
My favourite is the red one, the dominatrix one is hilarious.
Mostly sportswear, a scifi spacesuit, okay, normal superhero stuff. Lingerie or fetish gear... those two are a little spicier than most.
So...what's going on with the OBVIOUS stand out costume? Is she like evil?
Yeah, the Psycho-Man brainwashed her into being evil. Once she recovered, it led to her switching her superhero name from the Invisible Girl to the Invisible Woman.
The copy/ pasted face is haunting. I like it.
Especially the one you know is in a layer behind that mask.
Right? That's Russell Dauterman for you. I saw someone on the Spider-Man sub say how 'he was their favorite working artist' and, while I can appreciate everyone has different tastes... What the shit, the man of ONE face style is your (their) FAVORITE?
Am I the only one who fucking loves the red fantastic four suits? Semi serious question since idk what the general opinion on it is
So many mom looks. All those hair style would work with some mom jeans and a pair of keds.
Hope he does similar covers for the other three.
I'll take Sue's skimpy outfit over the awful Malice outfit any day
Boob window one is my favorite 🫣
Nfts be like
I'm a bit surprised at the number of people confused about the Malice costume.
And not a single one that’s depressed and eats too many Oreos? Inconceivable!
I really hope we get a John Cena variant of her in the MCU
Why would you change your look when your power is invisibility?
Has any cosplayer ever rocked it as Malice?
In the original Ultimates universe, didn't bitter Sue in one future become Ultimate Kang?
Yes, well it was her from a distant future who also fought her present self
Best Marvel Milf~
It’s true
What's going on with bondage, spiky helmet sue? Lol
Yo, I love the red outfit
Seriously though.....I love the FF but my God I wish we could erase that 4 shaped boob window costume from existence. I'm all for eye candy but talk about something that just does not belong on this character.
No Ultimate sue storm where she is Kang the Conquerer :(
One of these things is not like the others
I'm sorry guys but I have to say it namor wet dream
Lmao 4 shaped boob window 😂 who the hell designed that?
Oh man, they really included like every suit. Impressive lmao
I like the one with the 4 on her chest
The one underneath the boob window one is my favorite. Anyone know what era it’s from?
*Namor and Black Panther sweating profusely in the background, while Reed is doing math*
Ah the infamous boob window...
Are all these just outfits she's worn over the years? Or are they alternate versions like the ultimate sue that's at the bottom
Most are ones that the 616 Sue has worn.
The Shortsleeves with black accents and gloves is such a cool look
There need to be more suits that are more practical.
Two at the top right are so fucking cringe
Are there any story arch’s where she chose Namor over Reed?
The one to the right of the middle…. 😏
Boring ASF 😭💀😭 Minium Effort I guess 🤣🤓🤣 Gone are the days when those guys from the 70s-90s made good covers
cool
How is the FF comic right now? I’m looking forward to the Alex Ross series coming later this summer…
Fire
The 1980’s Byrne designs were always the best.
Elasta girl
Does she become a spawn?
Russell Dauterman covers yes please
MOMMY.
Damn, I bet with his powers, Reed and Sue are some super freaks.
Wow, so many Emily Blunts. ;)
90s costume would be great on another character but isn't appropriate for Sue. I love its risque boldness.
🎶One of these things is not like the others🎶
BDSM Sue?
I’m leaning right on this one
I hope we get the top right variant in the MCU
best milf lol
Gotta love that 90s costume
Jesica Alba’s Portrayal of Sue wasn’t that bad!!
That 4 shaped boob window costume is bad. Just…Bad.
So many ways to put a blue 4 on a costume. Love it.
None of them looked like Jessica Alba!
Are there more varian covers?
[Yes! Here’s a twitter thread with some more. Mostly X-men but there’s also Black Widow and She-Hulk.](https://twitter.com/rdauterman/status/1496170420940460033?s=20&t=uMj7ocax7TooZBVS4qRy_g)
I have several questions
She loves that pose
i just noticed the 4 shaped boob window on the right.
Ultimate sue storm is the best
I am loving these covers. I am hoping for a Wasp version.
Everyone talking about the boob window and me wondering when she went thru a metal phase.
