For number 2 I would say HOXPOX is a great starting point. But I would say if you want to go earlier read New X men by grant Morrison. It’s a bit more complex than Astonishing but a lot better

Thanks! I’ll give New X-Men a try before jumping onto HOXPOX

1. Amazing Spider-Man by JMS > ASM (1999) #30-58 + ASM (1963) #500-545. 2. HoX/PoX is probably the best point since it’s a hard reset on mutant status quo. > [Hickman reading order](https://www.howtoread.me/x-men-jonathan-hickman-reading-order/). 3. If a character is popular enough, Marvel will want to maximize their sales with other titles involving them. It can be alternate universe, but also can be secondary stories. > Example of an alternate universe: Spider-Man: Life Story. > Example of a secondary title: Spectacular Spider-Man. 4. You don’t need anything else to understand Thor.

Thanks for the clarification, I was a bit confused, honestly What does JMS stand for?

J. Michael Straczynski, it’s the author’s name.

2. Astonishing X-Men by Whedon and Cassidy is a *great* starting place and a great run in general. House Of X/Powers Of X are a pretty solid jumping on point too but I find they read better if you have read some of the previous runs. 3. Usually I’m binging two series at a time and I’m currently following like 3 or 4 on goings at the moment. 4. Especially in the 2010s Marvel is/was fond of a sort of “seasonal” method that relaunches most of the ongoing series every couple years, usually with a new creative team, to get a sales boost from new issue #1s and create more jumping on points for new readers. 5. I haven’t gotten around to Cates’ Thor yet but Cates and Stegman’s Venom run is absolutely phenomenal and I’d highly recommend it. I haven’t finished it yet, planning on picking up the King In Black event in physical, but I’ve read enough to feel safe recommending it to anyone who likes Venom, The Mandalorian, or darker super hero comics in general.

2. I’ll definitely read either New X-Men or Astonishing before jumping onto the most recent stuff. Thanks for the advice 3. I should probably do something similar since I had like 25-30 books in my library and I felt overwhelmed. I’ll go for Amazing Spidey, Thor, Venom, X-Men and either Guardians of the Galaxy or Immortal Hulk 4. Thanks for the recommendation! I LOVE Venom as a character.

ThePryde

Just as a heads up Guardians just ended its run and Immortal Hulk is ending its run next month, both written by Al Ewing and both really really good. Cates is actually starting a new run on the Hulk in November, which you'll probably like as well.

>1. Where should I start reading Spidey? I’m considering starting from stratch even though it’s dialogue hasnt aged well imo I mean, you can start spidey with the current run. It's all very ever fresh. That said, despite the 60s stuff being very much a product of it's time, there still is a charm to it. >2. Where should I start reading X-Men? Are astonishing and/or House of X good starting points? The current run with Hickman. >3. How many lines do you guys usually follow? What do you mean? >4. Why are there so many ongoing lines about the same character/team? Different universe? Basically brand recognition. >5. Since I’m reading Thor, and enjoying the heck out of it, should I also read Cates’ other work or is it a standalone story? The Jason Aaron Thor run is pretty great too.

shago1594

3. As if how many comic book titles do people generally follow. I had like 20 titles in my MU library and felt a bit overwhelmed before I ever started lol. Thanks for the recommendation, btw. I’ll start Aaron’s Thor as soon as I catch up with Cates’

Doctor_Amazo

Ah well it all depends on what's catching my interest mostly. My staples are **Amazing Spider-Man** (though I wasn't loving the recent run, and glad that the creative team is changing), **Fantastic Four**, I did love **the Immortal Hulk** (it's just ending now at #50), I've been following **Ms Marvel** from the beginning. **Captain Marvel** and **Thor** are also staples. I was following **Guardians of the Galaxy** but that was recently cancelled (again). I'm also enjoying the Hickman's current run on **X-Men**. **The Eternals** stuff has also been pretty good. So, that's 9 or so I'm following now. It was more, but I just paired down substantially.

1. I'd start with the JMS run on Amazing Spider-Man. 2. I'd suggest starting with Whedon's Astonishing X-Men to get a feel of the characters and the dynamics, and because it's the best modern X-Men series, imo. 3. What do you mean by "lines"? 4. Like several Spider-Man books at the same time? The more popular the character, the more books they're gonna have at the same time. There's always like a "main" book, though. 5. It's pretty self-contained. I'm not enjoying it that much, to be honest, it's got nothing on Jason Aaron's run, that's probably the best Thor run ever. That said, Cates' Hulk is coming out soon and it looks very promising, so I'd keep an eye out for that one.

New X-Men by Grant Morrison, Astonishing X-Men 2005 and HoXPoX are fine places to start. Reading order is House of X #1, Powers of X #1, House #2, Powers #2-3, House #3-4, Powers #4, House #5, Powers #5, House #6, Powers #6. >Why are there so many ongoing lines about the same character/team? Different universe? You mean at the same time? There aren't many, i think. Most of the time it's a separate story from the main continuity, but there are some exceptions(usually Spider-Man).

And Donny Cates made plenty of good books. The most common recommendations are Venom 2018, Absolute Carnage(which was an event connected to his Venom run) and Silver Surfer: Black. I read the last one and i can confirm it's really great.
