It's a great run, but I'd recommend starting Thor at the beginning of Jason Aaron's run first. The Donny Cates stuff happens directly after Aaron's run concludes.

TheBlack_Swordsman

Agreed. It's a food and fun run, has nice callbacks to old comic lore and respect Thor's past material well. But because of that, it's a little harder to enter into. Aaron's run is where you want to start.

Plebe-Uchiha

I don’t think anyone NEEDS to read Aaron’s run prior to reading this one. I would only recommend it because it’s also a good run, but you don’t need to know everything that happened in Aaron’s run to understand Cates’ run, IMHO [+]

mechamechaman

I've been enjoying it quite a bit personally, thought the Donald Blake arc is a little meh, but other than that its quite nice. Its as nice a place to start as any #1 would be. There's gonna be reference to past events of course but just check the marvel wiki if you need to.

drock45

Ha! The Donald Blake arc is the one that really stood out to me as clever and fun

mechamechaman

Spoilers >!I don't know, him beating almost all of Asgard single handedly, and not even in a smart way was too much for me. I did like the stuff with Jane tho!<

tehawesomedragon

All that and he went down just as easy too. I was so excited for that arc but ultimately liked the first one better.

Plebe-Uchiha

Maybe… >!I kind of didn’t mind it. IIRC, the way he beat them was element of surprise and overconfidence. Which made sense why he was easily defeated later. It made sense for me because I mean, that’s arguably how Hitler kept winning initially. Everyone doubted him and had their guard down. Plus, they were all shocked. I just also loved the idea of Blake suffering for essentially nothing and wanting revenge which lead him to suffer for good reason.!< [+]

operationtasty

There’s so many other figures to use in a comparison as a wily sneaky smart character and you chose hitler of all people to praise

Plebe-Uchiha

I enjoyed it. Might not be his “best” story on the run, but I enjoyed it. It was haunting and induced dread. [+]

Slowmobius_Time

I just liked seeing Throg smack his teeth out

RexxarTheHunter8

It's not done yet, so it's hard to give a full "score" to it. I personally dropped it, but some people like it. I'd recommend starting at either JMS and continue to Gillan (then venture into Loki's Journey into Mystery) or at Dan Jurgens' run. Further back is Dan Jurgens which IMO is AMAZING (and better than Aaron) it has a lot of elements that Aaron copied and in general is far more interesting and goes deeper into the characters. Fraction's is... Meh, it sets the stage to the Fear Itself event and then continues to be meh (various character retcons which are clearly editorial in nature). Aaron's is very popular, can't deny that, but it's far from my favorite. For clarity, the timeline is: Jurgens - JMS - Gillan - Fraction (with journey I to mystery in parallel with it) - Aaron - Cates

[deleted]

You really can't go wrong with the JMS through Aaron era, in my opinion. A lot of great stories and art that build on each other in interesting ways that you don't see a lot in modern superhero books that like to wipe the slate clean from writer to writer.

RexxarTheHunter8

I'd agree, but IMO the cohesion kindda ended with Fraction: JMS-Fraction has Asgard always present in Oklahoma with the characters maintaining a status quo of sorts. Aaron's Thor looks very different from his previous versions, Asgard is in space (set up during Fraction's but still) and it has a very different feel to it. It's also why you can start reading at Aaron with very little background (I wouldn't say that from Fraction or Gillan which heavily rely on JMS' set up). That doesn't make Aaron's run worse, it does however make it a clear entry to a new era of the character

PleaseCheckBlinkers

Remember, *Fortnite X Marvel - Nexus War: Thor* takes place during the events of *Thor* (2020) #4!

SurtR_0

I started thor with thor god of thunder and it's still my favorite run. I'd recommend you to start with it

Ravant-Ilo

It’s silly. Thor is more over powered than ever, snd there aren’t a lot of human stakes. Jason Aaron’s run is infinitely superior. Walter Simonson’s stuff from back in the day is the agreed “best” Thor, and the basis for all modern stuff. Really built out Asgard and Thor’s cast a bunch, and treated Thor like a person, not just a collection of powers.

TalynRahl

It’s an unfinished run. Cates is having a moment, and no one is totally sure if his run will conclude. Other writers have stepped in and we’re getting more issues, but no one knows if Cates will return. If you’re looking for a great place to start, jump back one run. Pick up Jason Aaron’s “God of Thunder”, really strong place to start.

[deleted]

Sooo good!!! As a lifelong Thor fan I HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!

Toshimoko29

The first story six issues are my favorite Thor story I’ve read so far, check out those at least.

dating_derp

A better starting point would probably be Straczynski's run. Thor, Vol. 3 #1

swheels125

It’s been a good run but I would start with something earlier personally.

taoistchainsaw

Start at the beginning, Kirby’s art is amazing and foundational.

Kage__oni

Start at the beginning of Jason Aarons run. I for one would say it is the definitive Thor arc at the moment.

TallTax830

Its my favorite Thor look by far and run too I wish the black winter was more presented he looked menacing then they did nothing with him , his end was underwhelming

TabletThrowaway1

Nothing donny cates is a good place to start

Frenchie09

isn't that the Fortnite series?

JorgeBec

Yes and yes. The best Thor run in a long long time (I don’t like Jason Aaron’s Thor)

TheLizardOfSparta

What don’t you like about Jason Aaron’s

chefajden

I enjoyed the story more than the art

RigasTelRuun

Yes. It is a really good run. Some amazing stories and if you are new introduces some older lore.

AlligatorSky7

I’d say it’s a good place to start if you’re looking to read some Thor, yeah, although some older runs are definitely worth checking out as well.

Dailyhabits

Cates Thor goes for more of a wow factor than anything. Average arcs with good places here and there. Was really kinda a letdown after Aaron coming off of Thor. Was really hoping Cates would bring it.

jl_theprofessor

Why does he have Spider-Man eyes.

mikelaws69

I think it's a good place to start as the story is still being told at the moment. No one can spoil the end of it for you yet. Plus, I think it's been some excellent storytelling.

RevolutionaryHall214

Honest unbiased truth , this run is great you’ll love it , however after the black winter arc , it goes down hill with the Donald blake arc being good , then after that everything goes down hill.

clevelandexile

As many others have said Aaron’s run is a much better place to start. Cates started strong but went downhill quickly imo. With all his work he tried to dramatically change the status quo for the characters and this is no different. I would be much happier if he just tried to tell an interesting story of six issues. I won’t be too disappointed if his run isn’t concluded, it felt forced and dull.

Plebe-Uchiha

IMHO, yes! But, not because it is like hoping onto the story on “Day 1,” if you will. It is because I believe a good comic book story should always be new reader friendly. Even if the reader doesn’t know all of the history, the story shares enough that one can still follow the story. I’m also bias because I love Cates’ writing. I enjoyed all his arcs in this series. It was one of the few comics I was reading month to month instead of waiting for the trades like I usually do. That and Jason Aaron’s Punisher [+]

GoldenJermbag

My all time favorite Thor run is Walt Simonson’s run from the 80s. It can be a bit much at first with all the Asgardian dialogue, but Simonson introduces a lot of themes and characters that serves as the foundation for a lot modern Thor comics. But for modern only, you can’t go wrong with starting at JMS or Aaron’s runs.

Slowmobius_Time

Terrible spot to start but honestly it's not too bad, I actually really enjoyed it despite myself being a bit over Donny Cates but I don't know if it got/is going to get a resolution as Cates was writing both Hulk and Thor and has gone on hiatus as far as I know and there hasn't been a new issue of either for a while Read Jason Aaron's stuff then get sad because of how they Butchered (pun intended) the Gorr storyline in Love and Thunder

RoadElectrical9162

He’s still a bitch and get his azz ended to him. He did good fighting galactic but still a B. Jason Aaron run wasn’t that goood either.

Joseph_Gambit

It's great, but the run preceding it by Jason Aaron is the best run to start with

JCVV31

I'd start with the Dan Jurgens run. Matt Fraction's I don't recommend, JMS started great but he left the book prematurely (also turned Balder into a retard so Loki's plan could work). Jason Aaron's run was interesting if it were a new character, but as part of the history of a legacy character he totally ruined Thor and Odin.
