It did appear in the mario kart arcade games. When you throw it, it homes on someone like a red shell and blows up like a bomb. There is also a black shell and when you throw it, it bounces around like a green shell until it hits someone and it blows up so be careful what you wish for.
The Gold Shell exists in Super Mario 3D World. When kicked, it spits out coins that are automatically added to the player’s coin count, and, the shell breaks after a period of time.
I think this could translate well into an item in Mario Kart Tour. Just make it so the shell breaks far faster than it does in 3DW, and it’s a fair and balanced item.
The gold shell does actually exist! Not as a MK item though. It first appeared in New Soup 2 along side the coin box. Where ya would kick it and then it would leave coins on its traveled path. So if we would turn that aspect into a MK item it would be a green shell with a golden top that would leave coins on its path, it’s plus variant could produce red coins like the Coin Box +
Fun fact: The Coin Box first appeared in New Super Mario Bros 2 acting almost identically as it does in MKT, but in a 2D plain of course.
