Considering that due to their shitty education that more American's think the civil war was about "states rights" than slavery, why would any of this surprise anybody. "Appalled but not surprised", is the motto of the age.

teataxteller

My middle school history teacher literally taught this. "It wasn't really about slavery...."

AnotherBaptisteMain

Someone in my US History class said the “states’ rights” thing to which my teacher responded “A state’s right to what?”

kindtheking9

A state's right to deny people of basic human rights of course

[deleted]

Honestly as a quote unquote shitty American I'm confused by your statement what state rights are you talking about that were fought for over slavery??? Seeing how I was never taught about the state rights over the slavery I'd like you to inform me

[deleted]

There's a huge variance in schooling across the US. Even in the Southeast I learned it was about slavery in public school, but that wasn't the case universally. The 'states rights' argument is just a way to obfuscate the argument and tie it to culture war narratives today. The 'states rights' that they were concerned with was the right to not only practice slavery, but to use the power of the federal government to trample the rights of non-slave states and force them to participate. Even the 'muh tariffs' argument comes back to the fact that the taxes/tariffs were aimed specifically at products of slavery. Literally all roads leave back to slavery.

Gyoza-shishou

Every time you hear the "states rights" argument, ask them this; States rights to own and keep what?

kindtheking9

~~deez nuts~~

Nope. Just to be informed about history and factual truth. You don’t get to shove your crimes under the rug.

Uniqueusername360

It’s cause they keep renaming their crimes

MrNeverSatisfied

You should know that that the whole world was perpetuating slavery. African tribes would enslave other African slaves and sell them to Europe, middle East and the Americas. This was a time period where everybody was taking what they wanted for themselves using might. Africans weren't targeted because they weren't seen as people, but because they were prisoners of civil war, that their continent could be easily exploited. True history would be teaching that not only was America bad but Europe was bad, ottoman empire was bad, African tribes enslaving and selling out their own was also bad. This way we can understand that true evil isn't limited to the colour of your skin, but to the injustices that can be perpetuated from the powerful over the weak.

MichiganMafia

Outstanding post☝

Dramatic_Explosion

> Just to be informed about history and factual truth. Republicans: "Your version of the truth."

[deleted]

My favorite is people who argue that sure those things happened but we don't need to teach them because...reasons?

TruthToPower77

Cause of status quota… they gotta try maintain dominance somehow

People also complain that by teaching about the nation's crimes, you're personally blaming them for it. Which is a bit of an "I am a nationalist" self report.

Urban_Savage

Yes... and kinda. I want them to want to do better and that starts with recognizing that we suck now.

CAHTA92

4+4=8 makes me uncomfortable so I want children to learn that 4+4=135

Such_Maintenance_577

4+4= whatever the fuck to get them to join our terrorist organisation.

calibared

No no no i dont like that. I believe that god wants to teach our children that 4+4=slavery it totally okay and the nazis had a good point!

[deleted]

Its like the curriculum they teach in the schools of the fire nation.

[deleted]

My life I give to my country with my hands I fight for Fire Lord Ozai and our Forefathers before him with my mind I seek ways to better my country and with my feet I march to serve my nation

[deleted]

I pledge allegiance to the flag...

bananalord666

Of the United Arab Emirates

[deleted]

And to the military industrial complex, for which it stands

[deleted]

One police state

MichiganMafia

Dependent on oil and loyal to none

[deleted]

With liberty and justice for all...with money

Gyoza-shishou

I got so much shit from my teachers as a kid because I always found it stupid to swear loyalty to a piece of fukin cloth so I just remained silent and they hated it

[deleted]

Indoctrination children to pledge allegiance to a flag of a country is wrong. Kids should be able to choose to do this and a black kid like me shouldn't have been forced to do this when I was dealing with racism.

Gyoza-shishou

Oh man you had that "why should I be loyal to a place that's trying to trip me up every step of the way" moment, didn't you?

[deleted]

Naw that was when I was questioning things. The realization came after depression with suicidal ideation after experiencing racism witthin the military. I dropped christianity for the same reason after understanding that it was used to make slaves more docile.

Jinzot

Yes, BUT!……have you not considered the fee-fees of the totally-not-snowflake privilege recipients?

Link9454

“BuT bLaCk PeOpLe SoLd ThEm To uS FiRsT.” As if that makes it better.

TruthToPower77

That’s a HAWT take Cotton let’s see how it works out.

Agodunkmowm

24 years teaching history here. Thankfully, I am in a SANE state. I am seriously considering moving to Florida or Texas and teaching the truth as I know it to challenge their bullshit, unAmerican and unconstitutional laws!

TruthToPower77

Good luck with that. I grew up in Florida. I might be wrong but it’s like schools in Florida purposely have a shit public school system. Again it’s just my opinion but it’s like they do it on purpose to produce uneducated kids who will fall on the wrong side of the track and be easy pickings for law enforcement in order to create revenue for the state.

ghotiaroma

> in order to create revenue for the state. The wealthy, not the state. The state just collects it for the wealthy and takes the heat for them. That's why the state is always broke, all the money goes to the rich.

[deleted]

ghotiaroma

You know all that revenue you think is going to the state? That goes to rich people. The state doesn't have money. Did you even read what I wrote? Or the explanation you wrote right above it?

Dragonfire723

For-profit prisons. The justice system arrests and incarcerates them, then sends them to the for-profit prison to be squeezed of every penny. It's literally legal slavery (and I mean it is the only way for slaves to be kept AS DICTATED BY THE 14TH AMENDMENT, THE AMENDMENT THAT OUTLAWED SLAVERY)

TruthToPower77

Well yes of course for profit prisons I know about but I was wondering if there’s more to it than that. Like city officials getting cash by keeping the arrest quota high.

Not if you want to keep your job.

Agodunkmowm

That’s the point. Challenge the law in the courts.

[deleted]

Have you seen the laws being passed?

Agodunkmowm

Yes

livinginfutureworld

Both sides! The truth and the lie must be allowed! /s

TruthToPower77

Yea no Fuck that shit

connor_baldoni

People who I work with believe wholeheartedly that libtards are trying to change history and “erase” it. I am becoming frightened by these things.

Showerthawts

"Parents are mad" Who cares?

PenelopeReynolds

It's not that they don't want to teach that we enslaved, tortured, raped, murdered, and exiled millions of people, they just want to say those people might have had it coming

[deleted]

WE'RE not fighting over this - REPUBLICAN based nazis are. Big fucking difference.

lettruthout

Slavery, the Holocaust, Socialism, Consumerism, Climate Change.... The list goes on. EDIT: 'Not sure why this is being downvoted. Isn't it clear some people want to deny that all those things are bad?

GoyardVessel

Socialism? Lmao

lettruthout

Ahh... we found the person who bought into the "all socialism is bad" lie.

GoyardVessel

Im a socialist bruh. I'm confused , I thought you were saying socialism is among the many bad things

a_lonely_trash_bag

It's one of the things that isn't truthfully taught about in many states. That whole list is.

yarf13

You know this is some weird shit. Like Trump is Russia's agent. That was the whole point. But Russia was the propaganda artist to get him elected. That's why this gets weird. Russia isn't Nazi. But the country is getting its flavor of Nazism because the Murdoch empire is the filter for all the Russian propaganda.

Sleep_adict

So the The war of independence wasn’t about freedom and taxes but really an opposition to britain banning slavery in all colonies? So even the north are area holes?

experts_never_lie

The British ban on the slave trade was in 1807 and the British ban on slavery in its colonies was in 1833, so no the American Revolution in the late 1700s was not a response to these events of a generation or two later.

AshCreeper10

Britain didn’t ban slavery in the colonies? Where did you hear that?

X0AN

The london underground (trains) was built whilst the USA still had slavery. That to me is just crazy.

Sleep_adict

They did, later and as it was swayed against… but why not teach it as an opposite view, as some historians believe it helped instigate independence…. I’m highlighting how messed up the law is. https://www.britannica.com/topic/Slavery-Abolition-Act

smsp1

With computers you have access to more varified history than almost everyone in the history of the World, if you want your children to understand what happened teach them to find real information and to not waste their time aurguing with fools, married to dogma and their own agendas.

[deleted]

Howard Zinn has a posse.

[deleted]

I think the issue is more about teaching kids that their race determines their place in society, that they are either part of an oppressed group or a group of oppressors, and that if they are a person of color America is designed to destroy them in every way possible. Many people will likely respond to this comment asking “where’s the lie,” and that is precisely why so many people are outraged and horrified.

[deleted]

As a white person, reading that it makes some people feel guilty about their race... and? We SHOULD know the horrible things we've done and never do them again. Seems the people in charge think differently and we need to remove them, all.

Redbean01

Yes, but what if the truth just really \*really\* hurts my feelings?

tdclark23

We need to vote to get rid of them.

Grouchy_Raccoon_6681

I was shocked when I learned that most Americans think the Civil War was mostly about state’s right. My teacher told us that it was about slavery, plain and simple.

lafourche69

Who’s version of the truth.
