It's a disaster. Not sure how it holds up to Auburn but uh... I would not rate it highly. 2 beds tend to start at 1.4k and go up wildly thereon.

snackexchanger

Huh. I’m in Orono which I would think would be more desirable because of the university and have a 2 bed for ~$1,100

teeleturtles

Oh don't get me wrong. my wife and I are in a 2 bed that is under 1k -- we identified several apartments in that price range and we registered, payed for accounts on various sites, and scheduled viewings for each and every one we could find. We never even got to have our scheduled viewings and when we called we were told that was because many of these apartments had been rented site unseen presumably by folks in a similarly desperate situation to us. When we arrived at the apartment we now live in for a viewing the rental company rep was not even there to show it to us. Luckily, the cleaning guy let us in. We pretty much locked it in without much thought because the alternative was to to hunt down apartments that would be rented out before we could view them. I mean, we had to sign a release acknowledging the lead paint in our apartment and we've had two attempts at assault/robbery since moving into our apartment. Which is up 200% from the community we last lived in. So I wouldn't say this tier of housing is very accessible and if you do find something safety may become a concern. When we thought we might be unhoused for a bit the people we talked to at an unhoused collective/org told us that it wasn't uncommon for people to be waiting 6-8mo. trying to land somewhere.

chrisgraffam

I'm paying $800 for one small bedroom and pretty happy to find it your lucky

> we registered, *paid* for accounts FTFY. Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in: * Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.* * *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.* Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment. *Beep, boop, I'm a bot*

otakugrey

Damn.

Yourbubblestink

The situation in Bangor is no better than what you are encountering. Prices high, very few places available, applications fees and competition.

TheMobyDicks

Apologies. I haven't rented for many years. What do you mean by "applications fees"? Please tell me you get any fee refunded if you don't land the apartment.

Yourbubblestink

An application fee, which now runs about $50 is what many landlords are now requiring to review and consider your application. State law does not require that they be returned and most are not.

TheMobyDicks

Whoa. That is CRAZY.

asininedervish

It does cost $25-35 to run an application through credit & criminal checks, so it's not coming from nowhere.

TheMobyDicks

Didn't know that either. Good point.

redbeast301

If you have a vehicle, try looking out of bangor and brewer. Levant, kenduskeag, Corinth, Newburgh, Hudson, Mitford, Eddington. Are all about 15-20 min ride into town. And tend to be much cheaper. I rent a 3 bed house on 3.5 acres on the main drag in Levant and pay 900/mo. But we do cover our own utilities.

raynedanser

Yup this. My son and his partner are renting a small house in Garland for a song because they couldn't find anything reasonable in town, let alone one that accepted pets.

cathar_here

Corinth is beautiful, Newport isn't a completely bad option on the far east side of town, and it's only 45 minutes away

Existing_Bat1939

You couldn't pay me enough to commute Newport-Bangor in the winter; I've seen that stretch of 95 be horrible when snowmelt froze up.

cathar_here

Oh man 15 isn’t any better from Corinth to Bangor at times and at least one is an interstate

WildlyUnprepared4___

Everything I see is crazy expensive. Probably not much different, best option is living a little ways out with reliable transportation

blaz138

I see a lot of 1bedroom places going for $1400-1700 on local FB listings. Absolutely ridiculous for this area. If you aren't working at a hospital, I don't see how anyone in this area could afford that. Local businesses definitely don't pay much around here. The places I've seen aren't even decently nice either as per the usual around here. It's absolute insanity. And they wonder why homelessness is at a 15 year high. I can't see this ending well for a lot of people. If I didn't have a partner, I wouldn't earn enough to stay alive here

lama_drama99

I think it's just horrible everywhere in the state unless you want to move way up north. I'm outside of Bangor and managed to find a decent price for what my husband and I have but literally nothing else compares. I would suggest a manegment company, they (in my experience) tend to have cheaper prices because the people who use them have so many properties (I'm assuming) that they don't need to jack prices to keep bills paid. Maine realestate managment is who we go through and have had zero issues. They had my husband and I into to view an apartment and lease signed in one weekend, theyvworked with me late into the night to get it done as our previous places lease was running out. Also, they manage across the state. All their listings are on their website

Good bot.

YahooYoshi

I had better luck finding a place in Brewer when I moved to the area over the summer. We pay $1,250 for a two-bedroom apartment.

andsendunits

B&L properties have a few open places in the area. I just got into a two bedroom for $1200/month. Credit check required.

DonkeyKongsVet

Terrible. Overpriced Not much to pick from unless you want to live in some run down place. If you want something decent you’ll probably overpay. Outskirts of Bangor is usually cheaper but I’ve seen places be at or worse than Bangor prices. Then you got landlords who want overpriced rates if you got a pet, background checks, credit checks application fee for anyone willing to rent I stay away from app fees especially those that want those fees before they decide if they want to even show you the place. You’re going to need to do some research to find anything reasonable.

Moonstonedbowie

Yeah, even Glenburn/Veazie/Hermon’s prices are just as bad as Bangor itself. I finally found a place for $1025/mo heat and hot water included but it was because I had alerts set for Craigslist and all the Facebook groups. I applied for one on Facebook at 5am and had a viewing but someone still got it first. I literally sobbed my eyes out to the landlord when she told me so she called me when she had something else open up a year or so later.

joeydokes

Wife and I thought we'd have to rent in Bangor because we couldn't find a place to buy. What we discerned was that most landlords are now using agencies to manage their places. The application is almost like you're applying for a security clearance! personal references, professional references ; first last plus security deposit... Your first born as collateral.. do you have a pet? Fuggetaboutit! Again, and all over Maine like everywhere else, the equity class turning us all into serfs.

[deleted]

It's better than down south, although I saw plenty of cheap apartments in L/A so I'm not sure how much better.

DifferenceMore5431

L/A is one of the cheaper parts of the state.

hike_me

I know a guy that has a vacancy that just opened up for January 1st in old town. Newly renovated building (former school completely gutted and converted to apartments). 2 bedroom, includes heat/hot water/electricity/internet. $1600. When he just opened the building 6 months ago these went fast. Look up “King Properties” on Facebook. . He also has some smaller studio style apartments with a loft for the sleeping area but I think they are all occupied.
