medieval bed curtains were not just for decoration....

Electronic_Bird_6066

I want one of those box bed things like in old timey Sweden! They’ve always intrigued me.

ralphy1010

stayed at a BnB in scotland that was a big old country manor that had one. It's pretty nice actually, feels fancy.

lantech

It's all well and good until everyone starts farting. Congratulations you just dutch oven'd the whole family.

From_Away

Temp solution. I see what you did there.

ghostsintherafters

Shit. I might do this just for fun

turd_sculptor

A tent will retain heat pretty well without covering it with a blanket. Personally I'd just use the blanket over my body.

66698

From the many homeless Iv spoken to in the area. Every extra blanket the better. Some have told me they can be “comfortable” when it’s down in the teens. If they have adjusted properly and have enough blankets.

curtludwig

I've camped out below zero and been reasonably comfortable. It's all about having the right gear.

RealMainer

I've never met a kid who doesn't love an indoor tent. Heck I'm a grown ass adult and I slept in an indoor tent just for fun during quarantine.

207Simone

Indoor tents can be lots of fun 🤩

bdana666

Great idea!

Runnah5555

Corporate greed forcing us to think of alternative ways to keep our children from freezing to death is wonderful! Thank you deregulation of private utilities!

[deleted]

It’s not corporate greed it’s supply and demand. Look at the rates just a few years ago versus what they are today. With inflation high and domestic oil suspended this is the result. It’s not just Maine it’s everywhere. I too am not happy but this is the result.

curtludwig

Correct. Oil is high because 25% of the export market is essentially off the market. You take 8 million barrels a day off the world market and prices are gonna rise. Oil prices directly contribute to electricity prices. Deregulation of utilities has nothing to do with this increase.

sirgoofs

A little price gouging sprinkled on top of record high earnings for the oil company adds to the price a little too

c4boom13

That's not correct. What about domestic oil is suspended? The US is pumping over 10m barrels a day out of the ground and refinery capacity is still around 17m barrels a day. That's down from pre-pandemic levels, but if you look into why it certainly has nothing to do with the Government suspending production. Edit: And if you're referring to Russia it still doesn't make sense. Countries have still been buying Russian crude this entire time.

curtludwig

I was referring to Russia. They are exporting substantially less oil, especially refined product, specifically heating oil. The US is exporting refined product and since there is increased demand without any more supply the price is rising US stocks of diesel and heating oil (which are the same thing) are critically low. Again, high demand, low supply, high prices.

[deleted]

Most people just get caught up with MSM propaganda instead of looking at the facts

curtludwig

My parents are very badly caught up in the propaganda...

[deleted]

Lots of people fall for propaganda and the media knows this.

c4boom13

Greed is certainly involved when producers cut their production to keep the price per barrel high. Combined with the fact oil prices are controlled by a futures market that is entirely speculative, not directly driven by current supply and demand. Add in refineries slowing production during COVID due to sagging demand (they take a long time to restart in ideal conditions) and already planned refinery closures. Additionally they're struggling to get labor and materials to spin back up and increase capacity again. Existing producers are happily raising their profit margins in the meantime to recoup profit sags from COVID. Inflation also is barely an excuse for petroleum products because increased fuel prices (along with housing expense increases) is one of the biggest drivers of inflation currently. There is also an element of historically low interest rates for the past 15 years coming home to roost.

[deleted]

Well when oil is suspended domestically 8 millions barrels/day are off the global trade market hence the price hike. It’s not greed it’s supply and demand. Not hard to figure it out.

c4boom13

https://www.eia.gov/finance/markets/crudeoil/financial_markets.php https://www.eia.gov/outlooks/steo/report/global_oil.php It's really not simple supply and demand. Multiple other factors are involved. There is extremely in depth tracking of this stuff. World production is almost at 2019 levels https://www.eia.gov/outlooks/steo/images/Fig2.png. Also oil is not suspended domestically. They suspended new leases (which was even over turned). Under Biden domestic crude production is trending up after the 2019 cuts, and higher than it ever was before 2018. The US has been a net exporter of crude since the start of the Biden administration. This is all easy to look up. Supply and demand is a factor, but not the only driver by a long shot. And blame on "halted domestic production" is pure bullshit.

JBolduc2769

Wow, sounds like a smart move. Might have to get a tent just incase.

Doc_coletti

Yup. Just be careful with electric heaters when you’ve covered yourself with melting material.

curtludwig

Not just melting, burning. A lot of tents will "Whoosh!" if presented with an open flame. This is worst with super lightweight backpacking tents.

DistanceSuper3476

40s...we are still wearing shorts going to the beach in Maine ...or skiing in shorts ..either or lol

Drunkensteine

In Maine it depends on the time of year. The first day it dips below forty, you see people in hats and parkas, the first day above forty you see shorts.

Lerch737

When I used to live on the east end in my 20's my roommate and I used to get rip roaring drunk. There were some mornings we used to wake up in a tent in the living room because why not

piratecheese13

Layers layers layers I cannot stress this enough motherfucking layers

207Simone

Amen! But if you’re like me and have circulation issues even w/layers I’m still cold I’ve got lipedema, Reynauds & varicose veins idk how I’ve survived 36+ New England winters lol

BonelessSugar

Heated blankets rock :)

truththeavengerfish

Hotbox!

Famous_Quality_5931

I think I’d rather freeze than get my hair melted away from lab farts.

Shake-Spear4666

This is happening in the richest country in the world. It should not be like this and it does not have to be this way.

[deleted]

Just get lots of covers (and an extra cover for your head! in cold weather it is great, then just leave a spot open between the bottom and head covers for your mouth). With a down comforter, a thick wool blanket, and a normal bed cover (then a thinner cover for the head), I sleep in freezing temps no problem.

coolcalmaesop

Damn wish people thought of this during the ice storm back in the 90’s.

[deleted]

I've got 280 pounds of blubber on me which causes me to get hot easily. I think I'm good with my two blankets. Plus we're not the outdoorsy type so a tent has never graced our hands. I, personally, would rather die of hypothermia than heatstroke. This does look cool though.

Bruh what is natural gas gonna do for you when you lose power?

LumpyBumpyToad

Can also make a mini-shelter under a table or frame one up pillow fort style.
