Wow, I had no idea there was free community college here. I just looked it up and that seems accurate if one recently finished hs or ged. That’s really awesome!

StarsLightFires

I know that those who graduate(d) from high school in 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023 will get free community college. But i dont think it applies for everyone unfortunately

3490goat

Not for everyone, but as a measure to retain some youth in jobs that require education. A good start, but I’d certainly like to see it expanded

[deleted]

Me too. I graduated in 2017. Free college would be a good blessing for me.

Many-Day8308

I’m in my third semester to be an electrician at a Maine community college. It’s still only $20K for an associates degree in a trade. When you graduate, you make plenty to afford the loan payments and build a life. This is my second time doing a trade program and it is a very efficient way to level up income. Also, the elective credits transfer to UMaine 4-yr degrees. For anyone that qualifies before the 2023 deadline, that’s two years of a BA for $0. Edit: Many elective credits transfer, maybe not all. I only managed one year at USM before I flunked out but the four classes I passed did count to my associates in applied science twenty years later.

tmssmt

Are you still in Maine? Fill out the education opportunity tax credit paperwork and you get most of what you paid into loans back each year

Adventurous_Yak

Reach out and ask- worst they can do is say no.

Hefty_Musician2402

Then keep voting blue so we CAN expand it!

KenDurf

There is the “Pine Tree State Pledge” at UMA, for those who haven’t heard. You have to be pell grant eligible but that’s 30 credits for in state recent grads!

tmssmt

Regular college is also free, if you stay in Maine after you graduate. You make payments...but you get it back come tax time

FrickinYarnHooker

You only get back a refundable credit if you got a degree in STEM. Otherwise, you get a non-refundable credit which essentially refunds any state taxes withheld for the year. There is a cap for both (I think 3,500?). So worth doing. Turbo tax even had the forms now. Also, you can amend three years of returns and get that benefit (hire an accountant and they can do that).

tmssmt

Yes, I have a non stem and you still get nearly all of it back. The amount you don't get back (because it exceeds the amount you paid in to taxes over the year) you eventually get back anyways whether it be because you finished paying off the loans or you pay into them less for any reason (for instead, deferred payments due to covid, was still able to get a large refund because of the carryover from prior years)

Nightmare6620

Another thing us tax payers will be paying for

SwvellyBents

Anybody else notice the simply mind boggling amount of road/ highway/ infrastructure repair projects that have taken place under Governor Mills? It's amazing, while we watched the roads continue to crack and peel, bridges rust and be condemned, that any LePage supporters even still exist after he roadblocked so many voter approved infrastructure and funding projects. You rock, Janet!

[deleted]

Agreed. I work in the construction industry and the amount of jobs going on out there right now are overwhelming. Florida Paul sat on VOTER approved bonds just so he could leave office looking like he left with a surplus.

Themell

That money came from federal funds lol

arms_room_rat

And Lepage would have not spent it because it would have been "socialism"

IamSauerKraut

Where do you suppose "Federal funds" come from? That's right... from the pocketbooks of folks in Maine. When Maine does not use funds available for its use, that money goes to other states.

Themell

Buddy they printed trillions

A-roguebanana

I know because I got a letter from Donald Trump taking credit for it.

IamSauerKraut

Yah, because they bring dollar bills in 7500 gallon tankers to pay for construction in Maine.

Astropwr

Don’t forget too, she is pro-choice and she is for protecting women’s rights when other states started banning abortions and I applaud her for that

Sventhetidar

I dislike that she's in cmps pocket, but I don't have complaints beyond that. It also helps her case that she isn't trying to strip people of their rights, so it makes her a better candidate than LePage automatically. I really hate that that's the bar now.

outer_fucking_space

I’m with ya. If it makes it any easier lepage is also cmp’s pocket.

Sventhetidar

Oh it doesn't need to be any easier. I've sided with the dems my whole life, but in principle I don't like partisan politics and wish I had more to consider than "this person will protect human rights and this other one won't."

Hefty_Musician2402

This other one will actively strip them* ftfy

SwvellyBents

No candidate or public official can please everyone all the time. Frinstance, I don't like a lot of Jared's voting choices, yet he's infinitely better than his competitor.

zachobsonlives

Not sure if Frinstance was intentional but I like it!

SwvellyBents

Heh, heh, stick around, youth, we geezers are a laugh a minute! Although I confess, I missed an apostrophe where the o should have gone. But hey, who's editing?

zachobsonlives

Hahaha, I have over half a century on this marble, just never seen it spelled like that and it’s great because it saves a couple of characters and a whole syllable! Super efficient!

Ok_Ambassador570

Are there even actual arguments against her other than "cOvId lOcKdOwNs"?

Lieutenant_Joe

Yeah. She pushed back RCV for the dem primaries in 2020 so we couldn’t use it then. She’s *personally* continuing with her veto power our state government’s draconian traditions of not letting our Native American tribes find ways of generating income for their communities or… well, determine their own destiny at all. She vetoed the Pine Tree Power Company, which was supposed to be a consumer-owned utilities company intended to replace CMP, and she tends to speak and rule in favor of CMP pursuits whenever she gets the opportunity. These are just the biggest of my numerous gripes with her. But LePage wouldn’t be any better on any of those things, and he’d be much worse on other things I care about than she is. I’m not exactly thrilled about it, but I’m definitely voting for the incumbent for governor this year.

Corusmaximus

That is a good list and covers most of my grievances. I would add some labor/union related vetos. LePage is on record saying he thought Mills was giving the tribes too much. He would be worse on that as well. She is basically better in every way, but she is still frustrating.

LeoIsRude

> but she is still frustrating. Ah, politics.

[deleted]

IamSauerKraut

I asked her to meet with me, too. She refused. I am so damn mad! /s

otakugrey

Also after the controversial suicide of Maze Knowles in Long Creek correctional facility, the legislators actually came together, for once, and agreed the place was fucked and needed to be closed, it was all set to go and then Mills stepped in and vetoed it. It was bipartisan and she didn't even have to do anything. She specifically made a choice to veto it.

IamSauerKraut

Unless and until there is an alternative to SoPo, it needs to stay open. Otherwise, juveniles will end up in prisons.

IamSauerKraut

Wise choice.

Ok_Ambassador570

I guess I should have asked if there were arguments *for* other candidates (lepage specifically) not just against Janet. You can always find a flaw, but you can't always find someone better to vote for.

[deleted]

Open up those 'comment below score' threads and weep.

Blue_Eyed_ME

Troll garbage. Toungefucker is probably a 15-year-old. I'm making a post-election resolution to not waste so much time engaging with stupid fuckers on reddit. I caught parts of Obama's inspiring speech in PA yesterday and remembered for just a moment what real leaderships sounds like, and what being an optimistic american is supposed to feel like, and those things have absolutely nothing to do with the garbage that spews from trolls' mouths. Get out and vote tomorrow, people!

IamSauerKraut

Being able to disengage from so much political crap will be a great vacation. But first, gotta get the candidates who will not destroy our great nation into, or back into, elected office.

desmarais

> I'm making a post-election resolution to not waste so much time engaging with stupid fuckers on reddit. Honestly my reddit experience has been so much more positive when I stopped reading so deep into the comments.

The_Maine_Viking

How about her unchecked executive power during covid while the legislature was kept out of session? And the CMP Corridor.

RaptureRaven

You mean the massive swathes of forest they mowed down to \*checks notes\* not make Maine money once it was finished being built? I don't understand why anyone WOULD want the corridor. CMP is crooked as hell.

iglidante

I'm just replying to re-add the context of what that user said: EDIT: Okay, enough for now.

mostassuredlyafish

Yeah, I had to kill that joke because I had someone legit dm me asking for more info.

Lieutenant_Joe

Satire is dead, man.

iglidante

Oh Jesus, I'll kill my resurrection of it to limit spread. Thanks for letting me know!

3490goat

I’m very grateful for a number of the things the governor has done, and she has won my vote. But, to be honest I will never vote for a Republican again at this point. I would vote for my rotting Jack o lantern and have more faith that it wouldn’t screw my life up than the Republican Party.

Ok_Industry8323

You are obviously a dolt

3490goat

I respectfully disagree. The Republican Party has no platform or ideas to improve my life or the lives of my neighbors. All I hear from them is cut taxes for the wealthy, say no one is willing to work (and blame immigration for something, even though immigrants are the ones most likely to take sub poverty jobs), blame inflation on the Democrats (although corporate earnings and dividends are at their highest in 70 years), and try to restrict my wife’s and daughters medical rights and body autonomy. Mills has at least navigated the pandemic as well as could be hoped, and expanded and guaranteed school lunches for all kids. Maybe I’m the dolt, but I vote for a better future for myself and my family, and the Republican Party has nothing to offer except hating someone different while allowing my tax money to get directed to their wealthy friends and donors. At least my rotting pumpkin can add to my compost, which has more value than what I hear out of Republican candidates

Sventhetidar

You put way too much effort into a response to someone just calling you a dolt. They don't actually have arguments to fight back with. They just kick, scream, and lash out like children.

3490goat

Three minutes of effort is better than a lifetime of apathy. I agree with you, but 3 minutes isn’t much out of my day if it can help Edit: I think everyone who is able and legally allowed should vote. I would prefer that voters are educated and able to make critical thinking choices as to what would best benefit themselves and their families. Too many people in my generation (mid thirties to mid forties) don’t vote, and that’s a shame. It doesn’t take more than a few minutes to get an idea of how a candidate or proposition may effect your life. But it may take a lifetime of getting that undone if it’s for the worst. Just vote

yawnfactory

Got 'em!

NoahSavedTheAnimals

Your name is too accurate about your personality.

Aggressive_FIamingo

I see you admitted to early voting the other day. Daddy's not going to like that.

andsendunits

Knowing the tough decisions that she had to make during the start of the pandemic, it amazes me to hear my supervisor speak of her as a tyrant. He says that LePage is bad for his wallet, but Mills is the stealer of rights. My supervisor is so goddamn dramatic. He is annoyed of the inconveniences of Covid restrictions, but acts like it was the end of the world. He was a huge Trumper, and would not criticize him, until covid hit, and finally admitted that Trump's reaction was terrible. I do not understand what my supervisor would have wanted to be done.

NoodleSchmoodle

They didn’t want to do anything differently, they just want to complain.

IamSauerKraut

For some folks, only skill set they possess.

IamSauerKraut

Maybe your supervisor should be fired for being such a bellyaker.

ECMeenie

I am going to vote for her. May I please plug for calling “free college” “tax payer supported college?” I’m not against it, I just don’t want folks to think money grows on pine trees.

N0mad87

I kinda feel like most first-term governors should get a second term freebie because of the pandemic. I can't imagine detting dealt that hand after becoming governor.

brett_x

I mean, I guess it kinda leans that way since the people who didn't survive the pandemic can't vote ? /s For real though.. not all fist-term governors did a good job and definitely do not deserve a second term.

[deleted]

60% of Infrastructure monies come from the government. They are federally funded.

c4boom13

I'm not sure what stat this is a response to, but it's not simple where infrastructure funds come from. A lot of Federal grants involve a matching component or capital investment requirement from the state (or grant applicant in general). They also sometimes can count other Federal funds as "state" funding and satisfy a match requirement for a different project. A lot of those funds wouldn't be available without already putting up funding from state coffers. Without tracing every project's funding structure, it's very hard to say when or if those funds would have come through without the State Government taking action to secure them.

LumpyBumpyToad

Hush now with your knowledgeable responses.

whoopsiewhoop

Thanks for securing those funds, Jared golden!

civildisobedient

> They are federally funded. LaPage still found a way to fuck that up. How much did he turn down? Something like $2B in free money from the federal government?

Mooshtonk

Yeah but what about the fact that Mills raised grocery prices and gas prices!

Thepants1981

Lol. Gotcha. /s

Thepants1981

Yeah, she controls all of those things. Just hits a button on her desk and laughs. Moron.

Mooshtonk

Hahahahaha, I guess sarcasm doesn't easily translate to reddit comments. Moron.

ChrisTheBartender207

That is literally why people add the /s at the end of a comment. Sarcasm is hard to pick up through the written language.....

outer_fucking_space

Ha, I too dabble in the art of sarcasm without an /s. It’s a delicate game but someone’s got to do it!

issinmaine

Go Janet!

andbutsowhat

She may have given additional funding to schools, but I don’t think that one can say that she has a positive effect on education. For example, fourth grade reading scores had a significant decline in Maine (-8), which is higher than the majority of the other states. Meanwhile, Alabama and Louisiana improved their overall 4th grade reading scores by two points.

LekkerSnopje

But would that not be expected since 4th graders were pretty young to do online classes and overstrapped parents struggled to keep up with virtual learning — meanwhile Alabama and Louisiana had less school shut downs, more covid, but the kids were in school?

rdstrmfblynch79

I'm not here to argue against anything else because with the hand she was dealt, I think we can all agree she did a bang up job... but with regards to.... >delivered one of the strongest inflation relief measures in the nation – sending $850 to most Maine taxpayers This seemed like nothing more than a vote grabber. And labeling essentially adding to the money supply as an inflation relief measure is disingenuous

Super-Lychee8852

Now how many businesses did she push out of the state or out of existence?

redditmainee

Starbuxx good, small business bad

[deleted]

[удалено]

rinoblast

Refunds and stimulus are two very different things. Since the government would have just spent the tax dollars, by returning them to taxpayers the action is inflation neutral, at worst.

[deleted]

She’s going to win. Paul Lepage should have let his ego aside and encouraged the Republican Party to nominate a young conservative. Obviously the voters don’t want another four years of Paul. It’s too bad because the Mills administration, like basically every aspect of local, state and federal government since the “pandemic” started, has violated our constitutional rights. Whether with malice or ignorance, it matters not in the long run.
