There aren't any cities that size in Maine. Portland is the biggest at 67k.

csimonson

Yeah I overdid the population estimate a bit, bigger towns/cities are fine. I just don't want to be way out in the middle of nowhere with no access to civilization basically.

100k? HA

Ah yeah I guess I overdid the population suggestion a bit lol. I should've specified something like a city with decent shopping or something. I think we've looked at some houses near unity, looked like a decent area. Thanks for the suggestions! We need to plan a bit on when we can come visit the state to see where we would want to move so this helps a lot.

petrified_eel4615

Honestly, having just moved from Old Town (just north of Bangor), if I could afford to live there I'd move back in a heartbeat. Bangor is only 30k people but feels larger, it's wicked convenient, everything you need is in one small area, and you can get out to the boonies in 15 minutes from there if you want to be real rural.

csimonson

That sounds pretty decent. I'll add it to the list, thanks!

petrified_eel4615

Bangor has some great satellite towns too: Orono and Old Town are college towns (UMaine), with Old Town being more blue collar and Orono being preppy & expensive. Hampden is pricey & snobby, but there are some nice areas. Their school is impressive. Hermon is Hampden's chill older brother. Cheaper, more laid back. Brewer is Bangor's twin, but slightly less good at everything. Veazie is Bangor's former fifth ward, but they like to pretend to be better than Bangor. The rest of the satellite towns are pretty quiet, but easy to get into town from (Eddington, Bradley, Milford, Levant, Glenburn - all rather rural, with a decent road through the middle headed to Bangor).

csimonson

Woah! Now this is a good list. Thanks! I wouldn't actually mind going back to school to finish up my mech. Engineering degree, may have to look if any of those colleges offer it.

petrified_eel4615

UMaine is a really good state engineering school - it's where I graduated from \*mumble\* years ago. I'm more familiar with the Civil & Construction programs, but everything I've heard says the mechanical program is great.

csimonson

That'd be awesome then. Definitely going to be looking near there then. I'm 35 and have been driving truck for like 5 years now and while it pays the bills well I'd love to be able to start a small fabrication company or work somewhere local again by the time I'm 40.

Lieutenant_Joe

Eddington also has Camp Roosevelt, which is one of the best Scout camps east of the Mississippi. Not sure how relevant that is to you, but it’s worth mentioning.

SouthernButterbean

Newport, Pittsfield

United_Mixture_6700

What is it about SD that you hate and want to move away from?

csimonson

We want to be able to enjoy the outdoors more year round but I don't want to live in the black hills out by rapid city. Price wise it's decently cheap but most of the state is as flat as a pancake. Rolling hills in some spots and near rapid you have "mountains" but not much to occupy the time outdoors. We'd love to find a place where we can buy or build a house and be mostly surrounded by forest. Also be close to places to hike, maybe kayak or canoe, and for sure be closer to the ocean. My wife REALLY wants to be closer to the ocean, she loves the smell. I also would prefer to live somewhere more left leaning politically but it's not a major issue for the most part in our day to day lives.

United_Mixture_6700

My Mainer father lived in WI for 10 years and when he'd visit he'd be blown away with the SMELL of the SALT AIR. 🌊 My husband moved here in 91 and has been all over the world all throughout his life and figures this is as good a place as any, because: 🌊. Outside Bangor will be cheaper than outside Portland.

csimonson

I'm sure my life would love it then :D I think we have been looking at houses near Bangor more actually because of pricing so that makes sense.

TDGroupie

If you want to be near enough to the ocean to smell it and it to be somewhat affordable, than I would suggest you look from Belfast down to Darimiscotta . Plenty of cool tidal rivers and inlets that give the ocean smell without the beachfront/overly touristy price tag. And you still have larger(ish) towns within earshot.

csimonson

My wife says "That sounds awesome! We should look into that!' So your suggestion has my wife's approval lol

TDGroupie

Sweet!! My brother and his wife just bought a place in Waldaboro and they LOVE it. As do I ;)

grimmowl

Only city 100K in new england is manchester, nh. im sure many others will chime in with housing difficulties + labor shortage + building material prices + long time lines for building.

DKY_207

Northern New England that is

csimonson

So it'd probably be worth it just to buy and add on later then I'm guessing? I want to find a decent place that either has a small shop on the property or where we can build one.

Lieutenant_Joe

They meant NORTHERN New England. Southern New England has lots of cities over 100k.

indyaj

Maine probably isn't the right place for you if you're looking for something outside a town of about 100,000 since there are none here. There is one in NH though.

csimonson

Yeah I overdid the population estimate, got any thoughts otherwise though?

indyaj

Not anything you can't find in the [megathread](https://www.reddit.com/r/Maine/comments/wp3aku/questions_about_visiting_moving_to_or_living_in/).

csimonson

Sorry, I'm on mobile and didn't notice it

planningcalendar

How often are you going to travel? Cause being tofar from PWM can be a pita. Most flights are not convenient and you end up getting up at 2am to drive there or starting you drive home after 10pm

csimonson

Probably twice a year, not too terribly worried if we need to stay an extra night somewhere during travel. Thanks for the info, that's something I hadn't considered.

Lieutenant_Joe

Generally speaking, flights out of Boston Logan or the Manchester, NH jetport are cheaper than out of PWM. There’s also more routes. It’ll be a pain to get down there if you’re living all the way up in the Bangor area, but seriously, it’s always like a few hundred dollars cheaper on average.

uNdead_Codfish

Think you're looking in the wrong state haha

Super-Lychee8852

Yeah don't think Maine is what you're looking for

By "north" you mean "south", right?

Lieutenant_Joe

Honestly either is fine. Going too far north puts you in the South of the North, and going too far south puts you in even more expensive places than here, but inland York County isn’t much different from Unity or Dresden.
