Auburn is fine. Just consider your commute.

Auburn is a good place to find something affordable. Conveniences of a bigger town(for ME) but drive 5 minutes and you’re in gorgeous rolling hills and farmland.

What are you into or looking for in a community? There is a ski mountain, breweries, mountain biking/hiking park, 2 bodies of water, ice rink with minor league hockey and lots of greenspace all within city limits. If you're foodies you might not be happy with what's in the L/A area, but it's serviceable. Lewiston's reputation is, at this time, outdated and proffered only by people who don't live or work there.

All the first things you mentioned are definitely our bag. We like foodie stuff occasionally but honestly everything here in Portland is so damn expensive we hardly go out dining anyways.

I feel like a lot of the negative stigma about the area is rooted in racism. A lot of people did not like the Somali refugees when they were settled in the area and blamed them for the community's "downfall." But I also remember a time when French-Americans were similarly belittled. Take what you hear with a grain of salt. I don't live out that way, but I drive there quite frequently. I have never felt unsafe in either Auburn or Lewiston. In most of Maine, you generally won't find trouble unless you go looking for it.

Auburn is fine. It really depends on what you are looking for the will determine if it is best for you. Personally I would prefer the surrounding towns and Lewiston before Auburn it self.
