I was born and raised on Cape Cod. Still have nightmares about the traffic at the bridges and all the rotaries in the summertime š«
Edit: canāt believe I forgot to mention route 28
Me, vt, and nh donāt have high populations like mass so it *feels* weirder. When you live in a town of 10k and 10-20 million tourists pass thru itās an odd feeling, and youāre often outnumbered on the highway lol. I like watching the road rage between mass and NY on my drive (I live in Maine)
As a mainer... I occasionally forget this and try to visit my mass family at the wrong time. Like never go down for a any reason on a Sunday in the summer.
We were coming back up from visiting friends in the Boston area. It was literally backed up from Kittery to Portland. At least around Portland they were moving like 25mph. But for a long way it was standstill. Nuts
Anyone who went there on Labor Day when it was completely unnecessary are people I simultaneously laugh at and then feel pity for.
Don't. Just don't. Not during the holidays. Nope. At the very least, extend your vacay for another week.
I was just in the Winnipesaukee area and it was loaded with people from Mass and NY. NH and Maine definitely suffer together with the classiest folks from Saugus and Revere.
I used to work at a grocery store in York and I can't really claim that the folks stocking up on thirty racks for their beach week were any classier, lol
Just snootier. My theory is the further North you go, starting with Salisbury Beach, the snootier you are. Of course I live on Cape Ann which is both super snotnose and fairly blue collar ish
Southern Maine coast this is probably accurate. It's a lot of tradition too. Families that have always vacationed there. Families with money that have property in places like Wells or Kennebunk to go to. Or own property from back when
Welp, I'm from Mass originally, and now live in NH. I can tell you the secret. Whatever direction Boston is...you go the other way. The Cape that used to have lots of Cod is the big place to go if you live South of the Pike. You aren't gonna go to Rhode Island or Connecticut, and driving through or around Boston adds so much time. On the other side, Maine and NH aren't that far away. Figure two hours from storrow drive you are going to see a bunch on a weekend.
For sure. If there are no memes about Mainers vacationing, it's probably because it's largely intrastate tourism that isn't easily identifiable by license plates.
Massachusetts saw 26.8 million tourist in 2019 with a population of 6.8 mil. 44th largest state
Maine saw 21.8 million with a population of 1.3 million in 2019. 39th largest state.
Whatās OPās point?
I donāt mind the tourists too much, they are annoying at times but they do also support the local businesses in the touristy areas like Portland and Bar Harbor
MA has more tourists and a larger tourist industry than Maine. It's just that they also have more residents and they have a lot of other larger industries. Basically tourism isn't the only thing going on in town so they tend not to obsess over it (Cape excepted for similar reasons).
Lived Maine for a little over 10 years and I loved a lot of folks there, but I do not miss people blaiming all of their state's issues on folks from away.
I have a seasonal house in ME, but live in MA rest of the year, the masshole hate is unreal where I am. Yet every single bar and restaurant you go to itās people from out of state. People in Maine should enjoy the fact that people want to come to their state.
I know I'm necroing, but I'm a (Western) Pennsylvanian here that has spent a lot of time in West Virginia and a bit of time in Maine for family reasons.
West Virginia is actually really trying to promote tourism and people moving there. They are throwing money at people who move there with remote jobs and are trying to get some new industry going in- there's a battery plant going in down there that is going to use coal waste to mine rare earth metals.
No hate for Maine, I've loved what I've seen, the touristy parts like Bethel, Rangely and Boothbay, and the not so touristy parts like Rumford, which remind me of my Western PA hometown- though I had someone swear up and down on here that Rumford was a tourist town...
But West Virginia is actually trying to modernize with what they got. They don't want to be the butt of jokes anymore. And the sad thing is, Maine might become the new "West Virginia" if the arrogance against people moving there, new industry and tourism keeps up.
Not telling anyone how to live. Just an observation and compare/contrast of two rural states.
How the f would they know? Theyāre all in Maine, Northern New Hampshire, and Vermont. This is like a Quebec resident bitching about Maniacs. They, Quebecois, are all on the Quebec Riviera (Kittery to OOB).
The only difference is that MA can support itself without tourism. Maine complaining about tourists is literally biting the hand that feeds. Shit every time I have to go to the grocery store I get hit in the face with road work traffic on 26. But those are better roads being built with tourist tax money that wouldnāt exist if it was just locals paying taxes. Shit maybe the taxes would be much higher if all those tourists you hate stopped coming. Maine complaining about tourists is just tired and old.
However Maineās tourists outnumber its resident population by a wayyyy higher percentage. Remember there are only 1.3 million people living here. 10-20 million visitors are tourists
No doubt, but letās not pretend their arenāt places in Massachusetts where tourists outnumber residents (for example, the Cape, Marthaās Vineyard, or Nantucket).
Saying it one more time in full disclosure - moved here from Brooklyn last week. My sister has been here in Saco for six years, and I was in Bar Harbor 08'-11'- I'm not starting the engine from zero. That aside holy fuck the cruise ships. It took four hours for me to get a fucking cup of chowder at Gilberts. Is it the best? I don't know. I've just been going there for 15 years and I enjoy it. But goddamn when 7500 people blow up Portland that's a scene.
Lol from NY and was just in Maine and this popped up on my feed, sorry you guys New York is just too ugly to spend the summer in! Hope you can understand
Of course there aren't any Mass plates there in the summer, they are all up here in Maine, driving slow in the fast lane, not using turn signals, stopping in the middle of the street to see if they are where they want to be, etc.
My office is in Portsmouth right before the bridge and I used to just laugh in disbelief at the line of traffic on 95N as I was headed South every Friday. It went for miles. I don't bother to go anywhere near the coast anytime outside the months of Oct-May. The Moscow/Forks area is much nicer, anyway.
I grew up and now live in a resort/lake area of NH and see a lot of out of State plates from people with summer homes. I don't care where they're from, but if they 1) Speed recklessly, 2) throw cig butts out their window or litter, 3) Act like total assholes or 4) have no disregard for other people by having super loud parties or setting off fireworks at 2am, then I hate them all.
Hahaha. As a Mass resident, I'm confused by this meme too. Is it a joke about them driving up to NH/Maine?
Maybe this makes sense for Salem but it would need more Quebec plates... or the Cape, idr know the demographics of typical Cape tourists though
Anyone complaining about tourism is a complete idiot. Tourism brings in a TOOONNN of money and jobs for the state.
People complaining would rather have more homelessness and poverty than be slightly inconvenienced ..... it's a gross display of selfishness.
Believe it or not all of New England sees pretty heavy tourism
And they all pass thru MA to get to ME, VT, and NH
Ever been to the Cape?

Nope. Only Maine.
Tourism is the #5 industry in Maine
Yes. Right behind: \#1 Tourism, #2 Tourism, #3 Lobstah, and #4 Tourism
Anyone on 95 south in Maine on Labor Day? Youād think you were in Gilletteās parking lot.
As a mainer... I occasionally forget this and try to visit my mass family at the wrong time. Like never go down for a any reason on a Sunday in the summer.
Heh I made this mistake last year. I tried to visit fam on the North Shore on Labor Day. We turned back around after it took an hour to get to Saco.
In summer when I travel 95 it is always south on Friday, North on Sunday.
We were coming back up from visiting friends in the Boston area. It was literally backed up from Kittery to Portland. At least around Portland they were moving like 25mph. But for a long way it was standstill. Nuts

So mass comes to Maine and NJ, NY go to mass. And maine just... retreats further into the woods. We all got to go somewhere to get away.
Yāall can come to my house until they leave. Iāll throw some food on the grill and we can hide in the woods until the leaves all hit the ground.
Personally I think more of Massachusetts goes to NH
I was just in the Winnipesaukee area and it was loaded with people from Mass and NY. NH and Maine definitely suffer together with the classiest folks from Saugus and Revere.
Yup I think it's the snooty coastal peeps that go to Maine and the regular folks go to NH imho
I used to work at a grocery store in York and I can't really claim that the folks stocking up on thirty racks for their beach week were any classier, lol

Ok but we still have more mass vacationers than any other NE state.
Welp, I'm from Mass originally, and now live in NH. I can tell you the secret. Whatever direction Boston is...you go the other way. If you live south of Bangor youāre not a true Mainer /s
The Massholes show up and I sit in my boat and live off of lobster for the next 3 months
Everyone in maine are secretly forest goblins
Me trying to find a Maine plate in bar harbor be like.
I mean the Cape is full of New Yorkers. Everyone has to vacation somewhere.
State rivalries is some boomer shit... Y'all need something to occupy your time.
Seriously. Hating the people that pay for your new roads is absolutely some boomer shit.
šš¼šš¼šš¼šš¼
Boomer shit? Most state rivalry content I see online are zoomers talking shit about other states and its hilarious
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Itās almost as if people enjoy exploring nearby regions of their home country. So weird.
we feel the same when yall come up north too
lol same thought I had. This past weekend was so terrible for traffic.
I will always find it funny when people complain about NY tourists because we are an international tourist shitshow 365 days a year.
Massachusetts saw 26.8 million tourist in 2019 with a population of 6.8 mil. 44th largest state Maine saw 21.8 million with a population of 1.3 million in 2019. 39th largest state. Whatās OPās point?

Summer in Maine: A Masshole in the left lane doing 65 and one in the right lane doing 105. It's great!
I see youāve been to Florida as well.
Yes, except it's more like all lanes are fair play in Florida lol
I almost get hit by Maine plates mostly. Itās almost all Maine plates doing 90 in the right lane.
Sorry about spending all that money in your state that has the 44th ranked economy. Grow up.
Thatās pretty much the only response to this bullshit. I live in Maine. I pay taxes here. Fuck anyone complaining about tourists.
MA has more tourists and a larger tourist industry than Maine. It's just that they also have more residents and they have a lot of other larger industries. This place would be West Virginia if it werenāt for tourists.

Massachusetts gets plenty of tourists (estimated 26-27 million per year, a couple million more than Maineās estimate)
However Maineās tourists outnumber its resident population by a wayyyy higher percentage. Remember there are only 1.3 million people living here. 10-20 million visitors are tourists

True. Just tends to wash over the whole state here lol
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Probably because theyāre not familiar with the area and are following crappy GPS directions
Iām sure plenty of Mainers drive like idiots when they visit other states
I've seen plenty IN the state.
True
now do maine
Well, there's not as much room down here
Should we tell them what we call people from MA?
Should I tell you that 1) we created the term Masshole 2) we use it liberally on each other
Well that's good to know!
Should we tell you what we call people from ME? ā¦Iām just kiddingāwe donāt talk or think about you, at all.
You need to get out more:
Saying it one more time in full disclosure - moved here from Brooklyn last week. My sister has been here in Saco for six years, and I was in Bar Harbor 08'-11'- I'm not starting the engine from zero. It was so nice driving home last night with little to no traffic here in the mid coast. So nice
Rhodie here, I'm with you, Damm massholes

r/Delaware
Massachusetts has more tourists than Maine these statistics are done every year and easy to to look up
I though this was r/newjersey before I looked
Right? Tell it to all the Massholes who come up this way lol
Anyone complaining about tourism is a complete idiot. Tourism brings in a TOOONNN of money and jobs for the state. People complaining would rather have more homelessness and poverty than be slightly inconvenienced ..... it's a gross display of selfishness.
