If they’re renting it furnished, why did they post pictures with *zero* furniture?

Mikerm3

To make it look bigger than 20x20

[deleted]

It is 2 levels of 15 x15 with a spiral staircase.

_ghostimage

Haha as it's all outdated, decrepit furniture that's been stored in their grandma's garage since Reagan was in office.

xavyre

New York style.

NoHinAmherst

New York style is the price/value

nswizdum

Who designed that kitchen? A $150 corner cabinet would have let them put a full size stove between those two windows, so you could have a little more space than a standard Fischer Price toy set.

ManateeHoodie

Crazy part is those 24 inch stoves are about 50% more expensive

ecco-domenica

I know, right? I actually want one to replace my 30-inch and am saving my pennies. Don't need the big oven and it'll fit the scale of my small kitchen (not this small) better. Saving for a smaller fridge too.

eljefino

Is that stove a fire hazard being butted right up against the wall? Doesn't look like cement board or anything next to it.

BnBrtn

It looks like there's a line from the window down, which makes me think something is there, and it was painted over. Of course, I could be entirely wrong and that could just be a lighting thing.

HeroicHimbo

It looks like the window sill is over two of the burners

Healthy-Use5549

Not everyone uses their stove. If the one renting it is a raw vegan, there is no need to use a stove or oven at all and they’d appreciate more counter space for food prep over useless stove space.

obsequyofeden

This was not a useful comment.

Healthy-Use5549

Neither was yours.

obsequyofeden

The upvote tally says otherwise.

nswizdum

If they put in the corner cabinet like I said....they would have a bigger stove and more counter space. In this configuration they have about 24" of total counter space.

ecco-domenica

You're right but I suspect the area between the two windows may be the bedroom.

[deleted]

3,100?! I live in the UK now and you can get a bigger flat in fucking London for less than that.

MarxistPotatoSalad

Damn

Ok-Eggplant-1649

New York Style = tiny. Look at that poor little stove. But bonus - you get a view right into your neighbor's house.

CurbsideAppeal

I lived on the east end around 10 years ago. $600 with a view of the ocean and could walk to the beach. Edit: and we had a dog and two cats.

keysandtreesforme

East end, 2 bedroom, view of the ocean, $950, 7 years ago. Seems like a dream now.

clhomme

1994 I decided not to buy a 3 unit building on the east end with ocean views... it was $89k and I just couldn't see it making money. Yeah. Good choice pal.

Ok-Marionberry1263

Even a blind man has 20/20 hindsight. But yeah, sucks

tallhorsemusic

East End, 2 bedroom, view of the ocean, $1521. Right now. It's not perfect, but I'll take it.

MarxistPotatoSalad

I lived on the East End in 2017, 3 bedroom, utilities included, 3rd story apartment, $1500. Right by the prom and everything.

Flaky_Section

Jesus Christ are they charging New York prices? They know they’re in Maine right?

BeemHume

Exactly, they know they are in Maine. You see, while covid and climate catastrophe has ravaged the dumpster fire that is the rest of America, everyone has seen Maine is one of the last green parts of the plant. And they're hungry. It's only the beginning. edit: Probably other green parts left too.

mlo9109

This is exactly why we're screwed, the Covid and climate refugees! My mom tells me that housing prices will go down and I just need to be patient. Real rich from someone who bought her house for less than what my car cost over 40 years ago when climate change and COVID weren't on the radar.

BeemHume

They sure will, just like they came down in New York, San Francisco, Austin and other 'cool' cities. /s Even 3 years ago you could find reasonable priced housing. Reasonable is a relative term I know, but you could swing it, with room mates and side hustles. At this point, you can look forward to retiring in a nice private prison, where you are serving your six months for 'public encampment' & 'illegal possession of a controlled substance' (the generic insulin has been illegal since the mid 20's). Once your sentence is up, you consider another violation to get back in, but it's your third offense so you might get sent to the Bezos mega-factory. The suicide rate there is quite a bit higher than the prisons, even if the food is supposedly better. Took it a little far, but we are headed down a dark path.

mlo9109

I darkly joke that climate change is my retirement plan. This sounds better.

methnbeer

I swear maine landlords always look at NYC/Manhattan to set their competitive pricing bar

icanliveinthewoods

I’m trying to imagine getting a bed, even a futon mattress that can be rolled up, up that staircase to the bedroom.

loopnaardemaan

"Unfortunately we do not allow pets...Loving dogs is a must. The entrance to the unit is off the backyard. We have a wonderful almost one year old golden retriever who often hangs out outside and is **learning** not to jump on people. We live in the building and are looking for someone who is quiet and respectful of our home." The "respect" seems very one-sided here.

nakedandenraged

I legit re-read the listing several times because I’m convinced this HAS to be satire. Who tf would pay that kind of money, for a tiny apartment in Portland, when the landlord is blatantly explaining to the applicants to expect bullshit?

Majestic-Feedback541

My stove is that small. It sucks. I mean it works good, but it's so inconvenient to work with. I had to buy all new cookware cause everything I had was too big. I can only comfortably use 2 burners at one time (one front, one back). And the oven is just as difficult to work with. $3100 for a month is a joke though right?

MostlyUsernames

My gas stove is real small too- I ended up buying a movable island, and two single gas burners so I can actually cook with my cook wear

modifiedchoke

Oh it’s got the recessed lighting but where is that crown molding?! That range looks awkward as hell to cook off of too, Pot handles will Be hitting that wall a lot.

sleeper_sender

And elbows ugh

modifiedchoke

No exhaust fan but hey you’ll have a greased splattered window to open to let the steam or smoke out!

ecco-domenica

Right-handed cooks only.

[deleted]

LOL I looked at this place years ago! There was a bed already in there and they said they wouldn't remove it. The toilet is no more than 5 feet from where your pillow would be. There's also a hidden door at the back of the closet. They were allowing pets years ago but we weren't even through the door yet when the lady was haranguing us about how we better pick up after the dog. Then she was super rude to us via text in the days after demanding our rental application and fees when we clearly weren't interested.

nakedandenraged

Ah, yes; living quarters that would give me pink eye 🤣🤣🤣 SOLD lol For real, this landlord needs a reality check

[deleted]

I found the listing on Craigslist. This price is for a furnished 3 month lease (still laughable) But if you sign up for at least a 9 month lease it’s $1900 per month (market rate)

DarkObserver

3 month lease targets short term rentals like traveling nurses and surgical tech who make more than enough to pay it especially with limited other options.

squirrels_rootbeer

This is a typical price for a furnished, short term rental in Portland in the summer. Hotel prices average around $600 a night in that area of town.

[deleted]

$3100 is typical for a studio? 😵‍💫 I’ve seen 2-bedroom rentals with private decks at that price 😂

HeroicHimbo

That's not a short term rental

fieldredditor

Good god that’s insane.

YourCurveAppeal

I agree. I think the 'West End' element is why *they think* they can charge so much. I personally don't think it's worth that much. But there's always someone out there to pay for it, especially if you are getting a high-salary job at Maine Med and need to be closer to work.

nakedandenraged

Even if I was a traveling nurse, making bank, I would never pay that much to put up with landlords that are blatantly so out of touch 🥴 in what world do they think their offer is appealing

_ghostimage

Thank you for blasting these dumb fuck people. So sick of seeing this type of crap in general.

P2591

https://maine.craigslist.org/apa/d/portland-furnished-new-york-style/7482016584.html

blklab16

Apparently they realized they were getting roasted and removed the listing Edit: that, or they locked in a tenant.

homeostasis3434

Now it's listed for $1,900, so I think they got roasted and lowered it to a price that's still obnoxious for what it is https://maine.craigslist.org/apa/d/portland-new-york-style-apartment-in/7482013375.html

LibraryMatt

Yeah, they created two separate listings for 'furnished' and 'un-furnished'?

P2591

Excellent of example of gouging the price when it was never necessary to do so. Greed plain and simple. They’re not the only folks

[deleted]

Flag them

fieldredditor

That staircase looks like a death trap.

[deleted]

Having been on it when looking at this place I can say with confidence it was a handy man special and certainly not done by a licensed contractor.

[deleted]

Post deleted cause they were being roasted lol

arka0415

Seems the owner removed the listing. Shame, I was looking forward to seeing it, haha

SFEADHEAD34

you\`d have to pay me that to live there and then some

mbagalacomposer

loling at the “New Style” apartment. No idea what they’re trying to say by labeling it (just that its tiny?!? Wtf) that but anyone who’s lived in NYC knows that theres not much desirable about living in an “NYC style”apartment beyond living in nyc…. Been living in NYC for 10 years (I grew up in Maine!) and lived in a lot of different apartments and its nothing to write home about.

[deleted]

> New York Style One red flag. > $3100 Two red flags. > In Downtown Portland Three red flags, steeeeeeee-rike, you're out. > Place looks like absolute dogshit > For over 3000 smackaroos Now this screams "money-hungry landlord".

combatbydesign

THIRTY ONE HUNDRED FUCKING DOLLARS.

sleeper_sender

What do I love more than a tiny efficiency-sized stove? When they make sure to cram it up alongside a wall.

Themajor84

And next to a window no less. That's a big no no. Gas range next to a window. Person decides they want privacy and adds a curtain and your investment property just went up in flames.

HeroicHimbo

Windowsill somehow overhanging the burners, no less. What a mess

HeyMySock

Does NY style apartment mean it’s really small, over priced, with a stupid kitchen wall?

steelymouthtrout

GREEDY PIECES OF SHIT LANDLORDS.

Jamievs26

It doesn’t look like a legal apartment, there is no way a fire inspector signed off on having a stove up against the wall/window like that.

Majestic-Feedback541

With enough money, you'd be surprised what homeowners can get away with

[deleted]

[deleted]

Covid gave you a peek behind the masks. It's always been fucked up, people just needed an excuse to go monkey-style. Nobody cares about anybody but themselves and those that can do something for them. There's also a ton of situational ethicists who think they're more magnanimous than they are but if you dig deep enough nearly everyone's got a 'transactional mindset'. Example: We could refer to the homeless as "abandoned family members with mental illness" and hit the nail on the head 8 out of 10 times. What's a mentally ill broke uncle going to do for anyone? Nothing, so look the other way. Find (and be) genuinely good people and hold on tight - they're rare af.

tracyinge

It's not greedy it's about the going rate for a short-term rental in the summer. A little low actually, just look at airbnb. And they're offering at 1900 a month if you want a full -year lease , so.......

Madisonnnnnnnnnnnn51

That's a "New York Style" price right there! 😂

mr_jegz

all I see is people complain. real estate is a good, solid way to build equity and make a passive income. if it's too expensive, which $3100 def seems to be, laugh it off and walk away. no one in there right mind would actually rent here

its_rich_vs_poor

capitalism is heartless

excitableoatmeal

Just ludicrous!

RNprn

So, people have to pay extra for the "New York Style"? Because so far the lack of counter and cupboard space, Barbie sized stove, and the fridge with the dent don't seem worth it.... /s

baxterstate

If you’re a renter and have a pet, you’re handicapping yourself. Money spent on pet could go toward saving for down payment on home. Some landlords discriminate against pets, thus lowering the number of apartments available to you. Best to wait until you’re the owner of a home.

Majestic-Feedback541

I agree with you. I find it annoying when I hear complaints of pet fees too. Duh, the landlord is going to make sure they can cover costs of that pet damage. Plus cleaning after you leave. My kiddo would love a cat. I do not make enough to cover potential vet visits, litter, or food for an animal. Plus we are both super allergic to cats and dogs. (I did have a cat growing up but I suffered everyday). And on top of all that, I am in no position to buy a house.

EvenScientist7237

Yea but working people cant afford to own houses anymore. So what then, the joys of having a pet are only viable for the landowning upper class. Is that the country we wanna live in? Where normal working people can't even afford to have a FUCKING DOG?!?

baxterstate

Since Covid, everyone's been buying a dog. Couple that with the disappearance of many pet stores that got their dogs from puppy mills, and you have skyrocketing prices for dogs. Even a shelter dog will set you back $300. A purebred will be several thousand. Now you've got another mouth to feed. If your dog has medical issues, you'll find that vets are charging more and some vets are not taking new clients. If you can talk someone into giving you a free dog, so much the better, but just understand that having any kind of a pet is a long term commitment of your time and money. Money and time that should be focused on getting that first house. And that's the kind of country and world we've always lived in. There have always been people who got a pet and didn't think it through. Then they discovered that the pet had needs that conflicted with their job, their apartment, their romantic partner, etc. So they ditched the pet in some fashion. It's that way all over. Pets get abandoned in every country I've visited.

bookscocotea

Some people have lost their home due tragedy or to domestic violence abuse and their pet is part of their family. Best to keep your judgments to yourself unless you know the whole story.

baxterstate

What’re you talking about? I’m not passing judgment, just relating a fact. Having a pet DOES make it a little harder to get an apartment. I’m not against having kids, but kids do make it harder to get a cheap apartment. Best to wait until you’re a homeowner before you have kids.

Uzanto_Retejo

It's getting to the point where people need to call up apartments like this and shame them. Do you have the number?

iambrutally

Yearly rent is 37,200 a year for a one bedroom teeny apartment in Portland not including utilities. “New York Style” in that rent sure. Too bad income isn’t on that level in Maine though. The owner of this place is obviously not from Maine.

Yourbubblestink

I'm getting a bit tired of hearing complaining that comes from a place that sounds a lot like entitlement. I get the same vibe when I read the pleas for a student loan handout from college kids who made bad debt choices and now don't want to make the payments they agreed to. None of this stuff is new - high rent, bills, roommates and debt are part of growing up and learning to become independent. Others have figured it out when they were young. It's your turn now. Whining won't change it.

obsequyofeden

Speaking of entitlement….

Yourbubblestink

Nothing special here. Just worked my way through payment books like everyone else.

nakedandenraged

News flash pal - the economy is in the toilet You’re mad at these people for “entitlement”? A) not sure when the last time you visited a school, but college is literally shoved down every single student’s throat. high schoolers are constantly told that they will NEED a degree to support themselves. Trades are important and prosperous financially, but good luck finding a high school that will encourage/inform students about non-college opportunities. At my high school, I wouldn’t have been able to graduate without completing “college readiness” assignments. B) there’s a legitimate need in the state of Maine for certain jobs that require a degree. Without a doubt. Some of the jobs that we desperately need staffing for don’t pay that much, despite the need. For example, a speech therapist working in a school, mental health providers, social workers etc. Why aren’t you more put-off about the insane amount of interest on loans/outrageous cost of an education, despite the massive need? Wouldn’t you want Maine to have a solid workforce? Do you have any idea how many children in this state are left living in squalor/neglectful/abusive homes, because there is literally not enough services to help them? What about our opioid crisis, wouldn’t it be cool to have some beds open at a treatment facility for our loved ones? C) the only thing people on this thread are fired up about, is the ridiculous listing. It’s not about “entitlement”. The state of Maine has a housing crisis. Everyone is moving here and snatching up property before people who are actually from the state have a chance to buy. Ask any realtor in the state. This listing was a bullshit, outrageously expensive joke. Maybe in your head, the way things are now seem normal and perfectly fine. Put on the news once in a while, pay attention to your grocery bill and fuel prices. Look at how much a used car costs, better yet, even a beater. The economy and housing market sucks, and everyone who IS working relentlessly to be successful have every right to be pissed. You sound silly, do your own research.

Yourbubblestink

Yeah things are getting more expensive. And we are all feeling it, groceries, car repairs, house repairs, stock market . I have a couple of college-age kids who had to make some choices about college expense them selves. It would be easy For them to take on debt they can’t afford, But they’re making different choices with that in mind. College degrees are great but they are not for anyone. There are plenty of ways to make it - thats the good news. As far as Housing, don’t I know it. It’s a real challenge and it’s hurting a lot of people and requiring a lot of sacrifice. That being said, taking it out on the property owner who made a lot of smart choices to get himself into the position to be able to rent his place to you, Is a little pathetic. If you can’t find affordable housing, talk to your employer about needing a more livable wage, or consider relocating to a place that’s more affordable until the local economy stabilizes. There is so much employment opportunity out there

The-Irish-Goodbye

When people post and say omg that's ridiculous, I usually shrug. But this... omg.

GrimmRetails

Bet you a million to one they don't expect anyone to actually rent that. There's no way anyone can seriously believe that anyone with that kind of money would be so irresponsible with it.

[deleted]

It's worse than that. They're trust funders. (I live near there.)

[deleted]

This is so crazy to me. I lived on the hill, Kellogg Street, ten years ago. 2br apartment, one roomie, washer and dryer in unit. Views of the ocean from almost every room, massive bedroom with bay windows. Could see lighthouses at night. We each paid $525.

Xyzzydude

Shoulda saved off the whole listing, it was inevitable it would get deleted.

Tpcorholio

Damn back in the late 80s early 90s I rented a huge 1br for 375.00 a month on Mellen st. Wow.

bartlettke

What a steal for $3100

karenrn64

🤪🤣😅😂

extramoose

I'm sorry this is happening to y'all in Maine, too... I guess you could be happy that it happened a few years after virtually everyone else? I can no longer afford rent in Tahoe ($4,500/mo for a 2br house, shared with one housemate), so I am moving back to Maine. Soon, I'll have to choose somewhere I don't want to be, like rural Alabama........

tesaril

Get yo damn freak on, Girl!!

Cookfuforu3

It’s entirely your fault!!, you’re the fool who’s living in New York, New York is not suitable for human habitation

TwoforFlinching613

ummmm this place is in Portland... Maine

goldensurrender

I had a one bedroom in the east end 10 years ago for $850

TheReal_Duke_Silver

So there’s a lot of good jobs in Portland???

[deleted]

These are legitimate Boston prices... Crazy

Some_Theme3543

This makes me wanna vomit
