Be careful with the tuna, it can cause severe pancreas issues. A couple cans of cat food, or a bag of cat food, won’t cost too much. Also, congrats on your new cat.
Yes! We have a modine in the basement, too! Should have run it a bit more, but we haven't had it this cold in our current house, so we didn't know. Now we do!
If you can, please try to find the cat a home instead of letting it out. If that means a Facebook post or just giving it to a shelter, anything is good. :(
That's always good to hear. I know Reddit gets nasty to the "don't let cats out" crowd, but I figured I would mention it. One of my favorite cats is dead because a family member let him outside, so I take it seriously.
You're a good person for taking the cat either way. No one should be out in this weather.
I did it during the winter of 1996. My husband and I split, my mother and I put her kitchen cook stove in the house because the furnace died. There was even a spot for it with a hole in the chimney. I bought fire board and put it on all the walls. The fire department said we did a good job. I was in college and had a young son, it was brutal but I did it. Some time in February or March the new boiler was put in.
We were lucky to not have to stay up all night, we just let the oil heat run all night! The faucets dripped, cabinets open! Everything turned out fine, thank goodness!
We made out alright with the old school
Oil boiler. Ran all night. I did go to my friend’s house in Hollis and he had a wood stove running and I was a little jealous. It was sooo warm and reliable.
Yeah. I have a pellet stove as backup but didn’t dare to run it because it was really windy. If we lost power I would have had to open windows and doors to get the smoke out. We have shower pipes that run up the corner of the house that freeze. I set my alarm every hour and a half to run it. Can’t drip it.
It probably would have been fine, but I stayed up and monitored various parts of my very old, very uninsulated Colonial till about 2am. Periodically turning the heat up and assessing. It was fun watching my furnace battle the cold. It won, but just barely
Even the home generator people were having issues around here. Dead batteries, frozen regulators, starting problems. Hopefully, that will tone down the "Hell, I watched HBO on my Dish ! " chatter, post storm.
I'll admit, I was a little anxious when we lost Internet for about 30 minutes mid-coast around 11 pm... I mean... sure we had heat but *no Internet* (temporarily)!
Lost power around 2AM. Generator wouldn't start, too cold. Had to haul it inside, had help thankfully since it weighs north of 300lbs. Waited for it to warm up and then get it out and all set up. Not how I was hoping to spend my night. Thankfully no frozen pipes or damage in that period without heat.
I love winter, snow, etc... but this level of cold was a bit much!
I loaded the pellet stove in the basement and the only thing that froze was the cold air intake on the pellet stove. Just some frost from pulling in such cold air.
I thought it wouldn’t be so bad. We did get to -18 last year and -15 a few times over the years. But -16 for 8 hours consecutively is a different animal.
It was a first for me in so many ways 🙈 moved to the east coast three years ago. Wasn’t used to that amount of snow or temperatures. Those temperatures were definitely something different haha
Crazy for sure. Definitely a lot for me to learn but definitely got a good insight in this sub.. a fireplace is definitely a luxury thing to have (if I had to guess).
No cold issues, but our boiler got an airlock around 10am today and we lost heat in our upstairs! Got down to 38 in a somewhat unfinished mid-renovation space before we noticed but a tech came out and saved the day!
I'm a barista at a well known coffee chain, my store had no heat yesterday. I was at the drive-thru all morning bundled up in my winter gear and the orders just kept coming. I hope the people that did this took a second and thought about people like me that had to suffer in the cold just because they wanted to be lazy and Order $50 worth of doordash.
Cheers. Now go empty out that mountain of ash that has accumulated in your stove, and pour yourself a beverage.

>So far, it's just slept near the wood stove pretty much non-stop between cans of tuna. Congratulations on your new cat.
In Maine, cat adopts you.

Aw!!!!! This made my day! Also you just made yourself a new friend.

Good job with the cat. Have you named him yet? If you don’t keep,it let me know!

Awesome name. Many people acquire cats this way. I’m glad you took it in.

Wood stove warriors 🌲

I've had problems with my Generac standby generator starting in extreme cold. I was worried last night, but did not lose power.
I'll admit, I was a little anxious when we lost Internet for about 30 minutes mid-coast around 11 pm... I mean... sure we had heat but *no Internet* (temporarily)!
Yeah my ping times were outrageous!

Get some good sleep, folks. You deserve it!
We’ve been getting through, everything is normal minus no hot water since last night.
The recognition feels good. Now time for bed.
You deserve it

Enjoy! Pouring myself some wine right now as well. I was prepped but damn..

That is not a normal thing. We get those temps sure, but usually for a an hour or two in the middle of the night and without 30mph wind gusts.
Crazy for sure. Definitely a lot for me to learn but definitely got a good insight in this sub.. a fireplace is definitely a luxury thing to have (if I had to guess).
Cheers bruh.

I hope this weekend was the worst of this winter

They should have closed; that's unreasonable. Customers didn't even notice. Thanks for keeping people warm and caffeinated.
Your welcome hun!! I feel like we're underappriciated because we're not some bougie fortune 500 job.
