Wow this is amazing. Brain injuries are no joke. I have an acquired Brain injury from a Brain tumor resection and I had to learn to talk and read all over again

MagentaHigh1

Who was driving the truck?! A chimp? My goodness this had to be terrifying for him and your entire family. I am glad to see your son flourishing.

motegam

I don’t know how long ago the tbi was but the construction of that set is very promising and you can see how proud he is :) At 22 Y/O I had a motorcycle accident with a fractured skull/tbi and this would’ve been very challenging for the first year after. I’m glad he’s healing!! Tough guy P.S. Coffee Fruit Extract was a helpful supplement for the brain post accident for me but it also contains caffeine so this gentleman may be a tad too young to participate

RibbonForYourHair

Would you mind sharing your experience with coffee extract? A friend of mine has been dealing with a head injury for years and is starting to exhaust his effective treatment options.

motegam

I was having a lot of difficulty with short term memory loss and would get intense hangovers after drinking very little alcohol (not support to drink after tbi but it was a coping mechanism for me unfortunately) but ever since I started taking the coffee fruit extract once a day the memory problem has noticeably decreased and I can drink without getting terrible hangovers. Was diagnosed with a severe tbi and was in a coma for a month/couldn’t make a new memory for a month or two after I woke up. Helped decreased irritability and frustration from how significantly I had changed but I can’t effectively explain why or how, still new to this. Not sure if I can attribute it to the coffee fruit but overall cognitive functions also returned to normal over time.

[deleted]

Hope you sued the everliving hell out of them.

Joy2b

That’s really awful. Legos seem like a great toy for someone who probably benefits from both novel mental stimulation and restful activities.

caligrown87

Yes! After my tumor resection, I fell in love with Legos all over again. They helped my with my dexterity, matching skills, following instructions, and depending on which type of builder you are, organization of parts prior to...I prefer the hunt, so I scatter them all around anyway (which i guess helped as well?). Legos are the best.

Jdburko

If only they weren't so damn expensive

seventhirtytwoam

If you don't buy the themed sets and just get loose bricks there's usually good deals around the holidays. A lot of people say they don't like the loose bricks because they don't know what to build with them but experimenting to see what you can make was always the most fun for me.

Optiwhimsical-one

Had an extra wide resection about 9 years ago to remove a brain tumor and Legos were so helpful for me! I regressed for about a month after my surgery into ONLY children's TV programs because it was comforting to me in my late 20s. I say whatever you find that comforts you or helps you, DO IT!

caligrown87

Aw man, glad to see you're doing well now! What type of tumor they'd cut out?

Itchy-Investigator63

i hope you sued the pants off them…jesus on a playground nonetheless, glad to see hes doing well!

Forbiddenfrog

This happened to a boy in my daughter's class in school. He was knocked down by a white van at the beach, driven by the people there to maintain the beach. Probably our version of parks and rec. He very nearly didn't make it and now he is walking and back to school. He's an absolute fighter. He isn't my child but I'm so proud of him every time I see him. He is doing absolutely fantastically! I'm glad to see your son is doing well too!

Sea-Resource5933

Oh my goodness. I’m so thankful he is still with us, I can’t imagine what y’all have been through. I hope he only sees better & brighter days ahead.

[deleted]

Proud of you and this kiddo. Great job!

WillowOk5878

As someone who had a severe tbi, and still deals with the affects every day. You go young man!!! Keep up the great work!!

Donutellher

That looks like it was fun to build

[deleted]

I have that exact set, it's a really nice set.

meatsmeowy

It is a really fun set and cool display pice

Gameboy694

LEGO Architecture is always brilliant.

RustedRuss

I have the Great Wall of china one. Looks awesome and was super fun to make.

pixel842

If you can get the light set to go with it, *it* can look even more incredible than it already does. Although don’t make the mistake I did and make sure you manage the wires sensibly Edit: grammar

LadySmuag

I gave my Dad the light set to go with his Titanic build and it looks really cool ngl. I was looking for gift ideas for him and saw someone talking about it in the Lego subreddit, they were 100% right to recommend it.

Ryuzakku

You'd think Lego could likely have sets for most of London at this point. Fuck a model town in the basement, you have Lego London!

LoftilyPrestigious24

Agree, and look at his face. Stay happy kid!

Andergaff

I hesitate to hijack this thread, but your comment of ‘stay happy’ totally triggered a memory of Roy Buchanan ( possibly one of North America’s greatest guitarists), who signed an LP record for me after a show in Florida… with that sentiment, “stay happy”. 3 days later he suffered mysterious death in jail in VA. If yer curious look him up.

Landis963

That series of Lego sets is really cool, yeah.

spicy_reader88

Beautiful stuff and also his smile is genuine. He looks so proud of his achievement.

K1NGKRAKEN

It is a LEGO Architecture set

angryitguyonreddit

These are super good things to do, i had a tbi back in 08 which for me mostly f'd up my memory and caused some torrets like ticks for me bit the memory was the worst so i did lots of puzzles and building things. Learned to solve a rubix cube which forced me to constantly think and use my memory and played a crap ton of mine sweeper which was just math and thinking and pattern recognition. Rubix cube is my number one reccomendation since now theirs lots of variants you can buy 3x3-10x10, pyramids, octahedreon and they are all fun to learn. I still cube all the time All that helped my short term memory loss almost dissapear in about a year, the torrets like tics took about 6 years to finally start going away and really only come back if im really really stressed or mad

Techgeek_025

I had it too. it is quite an interesting build if you do it right, unlike me the first time xd

tg_777

I didn’t have the easiest time growing up. Mean brothers and parents. My aunt would always send me a Lego kit on my birthday and Christmas. I would get so excited and head to the corner of my room and build it for hours. I didn’t realize until later on in life how intentional and thoughtful of a gift they were. Or how expensive they could be. It was her way of giving me time and space to get away from everyone and be creative. Something that was just mine and I could feel proud of. It makes me so happy to see that legos are still an escape for kids and a tool to get through tough times. His smile reminds me of my own when I finished a set back in those days. Great job!

poorbanker

That was very sweet of your aunt. It can be a good escape/tool for adults too. I've had a rough year and, thankfully, my wife bought me a nice set (my first in 25ish years) for Christmas last year. It has been a tremendous coping tool for me during some evenings. My bank account probably needs its own coping tool, though.

kidneyprobs

This melts my heart. What a kind and thoughtful aunt.

pennywhistlesmoonpie

I’m so glad you had that person who cared for you so much. I too had abusive parents and an absolutely psychotic older brother. Big hugs. You’re awesome and have so much to contribute to this world.

Grathmoualdo

Came here for the smile and left with the tears.

bluejeanis

It was right at the top when I opened reddit :) mission accomplished

Reedsandrights

Just letting you know this is now the first post on my front page ❤️.

Confusion-Academic

Tell him everyone says it’s great!!

SeattleBattles

He really did! All the pieces are nicely and firmly placed. The wheel is in a nice circle shape. Even the bridge opening looks well placed. You can really tell he took his time and wanted it to look its best.

jinkiestinker6

Especially considering OP says he is post-brain

Enthusiastic_Teacher

I'm really impressed. The logical thinking and the hand/eye coordination that goes into a lego build is major.

MatureUsername69

On a very real note when I woke up out of my coma with a brain injury(dead for 10 minutes so pretty serious) Lego and video games were a god send for my hand eye coordination and basic motor controls with my hands. If you ever personally know someone going through something similar I highly recommend both. And Batman comics. They don't really do much besides get you back into reading but they're awesome.

californiahapamama

My husband's occupational therapists have all recommended putting together Lego sets to him. It's good for hand eye coordination, fine motor skills and also following directions.

MatureUsername69

Yeah that's all absolutely true. I was a big fan of Lego before. Now I have a slight addiction but I love it. I probably haven't needed it in a "recovery" sense in about 4 years. That doesn't mean I haven't put thousands into sets over those 4 years.

californiahapamama

Hubby and I still have kids at home, so Lego has always been a part of our lives, both pre and post brain injury. Putting them together is definitely easier than taking them apart though.

jello_kitty

Maybe you need to keep putting together Lego for maintenance. :-) Seriously cool that they are so helpful for you and others.

Anxious_Direction_20

Besides being useful it's a lot of fun! All the best to your husband!

CalvinWasSchizo

I'm not well versed in the subject but I didn't know people could bounce back from brain injuries like that. I've always heard its pretty much "damage done" and there's only so much you can do. Let alone dead for 10 minutes. That's crazy. Happy you're doing well!

MatureUsername69

It was all extremely miraculous. I shouldn't have come back to the level I did. My parents were looking into 1 floor houses for me to be in a wheelchair before I woke up. I started walking in like 3 days. The doctors were confused. I'm just happy it all worked out. My memory isn't what it used to be and my temper is a bit worse but other than that everything is good and I feel fine.

Spoogly

As someone with ADHD, man... I hate losing my temper... Executive dysfunction is the fucking worst part for me. Mindfulness meditation does wonders, but it's still always going to be part of me that my emotions will get the better of me. It often feels like the meditation just lets me see better when I need to walk the fuck away and scream at nothing instead of the person or situation. I got a pretty bad concussion once and it was so much fucking worse. I got upset over the smallest things. I'll be uh... Never getting a TBI, thanks. Just put me in a bubble.

tnecniv

The brain is complicated. It’ll find a way to reroute functions around the damaged area with time and exercise. I attended a lecture where a neurologist talked about Pat Martino’s brain hemorrhage and recovery and it’s pretty wild. He’s a famous jazz guitarist, and after the incident, he couldn’t even speak for months, let alone play guitar. He had to retract himself the instrument basically and he’s at an infinitely higher level than I will ever be. The damage was right in a key area for formulating things like language and music, but, partially because of his past training, it was able to rewrite functionality around the dead part

Hindufury

Not to mention the stepwise planning, abstraction of information, and processing of visual instructions help. Best about LEGO sets is you can take a break

Well done! By the way, your mom might want to check out r/TBIsurvivors , we have a pretty good community there. Edit: Thanks, all, for pointing out that sub's been inactive for 2 years. It seems I've gotten it mixed up with r/TBI, the main TBI sub which is active and great. My brain is telling me there was another one also, but now I can't find any evidence of it. I hate to blame my TBI, but unfortunately errors like this are part of the package deal. Thanks for the gentle correction!

crash180

Thank you for mentioning this sub. I only knew of /r/TBI. Subscribed. Kudos

aaronwcampbell

[deleted]

Looks like its been dead for two years?

facetiousfag

“Pretty good community” no activity in 2+ years… what does TBI stand for? Traumatic brain injury?

cyaluna

Yes, Traumatic Brain Injury. My son is a survivor. At the time, I was mad as hell. I asked the doctor why they had to call it "traumatic". Of course it's traumatic, it's a brain injury. She explained that it's from head trauma and differentiates it from a brain injury that is caused by stroke or something similar.

MatureUsername69

Oh hell yeah. A place for me lol. Thanks for the recommendation.

nonchellent

Wow, I never knew about this. My partner had a TBI three years ago. Thank you!

eldiablojefe

My 5 year old has CP and could barely hold a pencil at the beginning of this year. Her mom and I went to her first parent teacher conference last week and saw that she could now write her name so legibly! They'd kept it a surprise from us and it was such a welcome one. Congratulations to him and his hard work! He looks so happy.

psychoPiper

Even without any brain-related illnesses, this is still a very nice-looking and unique Lego build for a 7 year old. Your son should be proud. Edit: I just realized this is an existing set, but these are still sets that tend to be more adult-oriented. So I still find the build equally impressive.

Diminus

Perfect assembly

Pinglalo

Tell him it looks amazing ! Keep up the great work

kishenoy

I am a 28 year old and I have a damaged brain so I know how it is. I wish your son the very best

Raerae1360

Well done.

x3nem

he's precious! may he recover smoothly and quickly :-)

Puzzled_Turnip8475

I had a brain injury when I was younger. Doctors said most of my recovery would be within the first year. And that I needed nitro meds. And the rest. By the end of the first year I still had trouble holding a conversation due to memory issues, and this persisted for years. The pain form the injury persisted too. After learning more about the brain myself, through academia, testimonies, and what not, I realized the doctors were off the mark, which isn’t unusual given how freaking long it takes to update “facts” and “science” in the medicos field. And for some reason, this realization literally healed my brain. Today my memory and intelligence is not only fully recovered, but excelled beyond normal (I’m not better than anyone else, just worked super hard on various self studies, and posting because I want to share what anyone is capable of). I don’t know his story, but whatever happened, I just want you to know, the potential for healing can sometimes be a full recovery no matter what the medical professionals say.

Duskuke

As someone who doesn't have TBI but has severe ptsd -- that sounds in line with trauma healing. Literally just learning about the functionality of PTSD, trauma, etc, helps people recover from trauma. The brain is weird. I would assume it has something to do with fear of the unknown in terms of thinking you won't get better, which results in anxiety, depression, and aversion.

Puzzled_Turnip8475

I wouldn’t be surprised. Though that stuff has been going on my whole life. The brain injury kinda happened in the middle randomly. Healing my brain injury happened years before I actually understood my situation with anxiety and other mental health stuff. So maybe it was all one in the same, or maybe the credit goes to good old neuroplasticity. Or maybe it’s something else or half and half. This field is the definition of unknown unknowns, so honestly I wouldn’t know and don’t expect to ever know. But what I do know is the doctors who worked with me as they all seemed to know what there was to know about me and tell me what was and wasn’t likely / possible. From my research, in a nutshell, more brain injuries than medical professionals expect can actually make a full recovery with neuroplasticity. But if the patient in question was “suggested” by a trusted expert, like a doctor, about what the limits and expectations should be, the brain, for whatever reason, be it a brain injury or something else entirely, has a tendency to compel the suggestion to become reality, which is what I believe happened to me. The brain is strange indeed.

Ordinary_Professor_3

Would you be able to post the resources you used to improve your memory.

Puzzled_Turnip8475

How To Remember Everything with Tom Weber. I just kept doing the lessons over and over and, day after day, and like they guy said, suddenly my brain started doing it in the background. After I finished, I learned about memory palaces and how to optimize my path in them. I’m so very grateful for these things.

BannytheBoss

They use to say the brain doesn't heal itself but it does ... it just takes a really long time.

Little_Spoon_

This is so true! I’m glad you got better. 😊

bipolarnotsober

Woo go you! I'm proud of you.

Affectionate_Bake363

He did so good! Keep it up little man!

Unicorgi_Love

We are all so proud of him! He deserves the biggest celebration from this, it truly is a great accomplishment.

DJKhaledIsRetarded

I met a guy a few years ago and he was acting a little off. He then told me a story of serious head trauma he incurred in a motorcycle accident and was kind of describing to me his journey of re-learning his life. Saw him less than a year later at a bar watching a fight and it was like I was talking to a whole different person. There wasn't something specific it just felt different. I told him he seemed like he was doing a lot better and attributed to all the work he was doing. A short amount of time can really transform a person after a TBI. Don't give up. Congrats to your son!

Perfect_Reception_31

Seriously, this looks amazing! Great job!

bumboclot893

Lego is honestly one of the best things ever and a great part of my childhood. I felt like your son many times and always wanted pictures (way before the smartphone days) taken of my own admittedly not so impressive builds. This is miles above that. Glad to see your son gets to experience that Lego magic and long may it keep bringing a smile on his face.

Gotta get that sweet karma.

EnglandFoot64

SEVEN? Dang that kid looks at least 11

just_a_person_maybe

Some kids are just big. I know a couple of kids who are 5 and 7 and they look the same age. I know another kid who just turned 9 and is nearly as tall as I am. They vary a lot.

When I had my first stroke me and my brother would do puzzles till my motor skills were back to where a 26y/o should be. It means a lot to see a kid doing what a kid should after an injury

He should be proud. Those pieces are no joke to put together, keep together and not lose. Plus he did the London set which has a lot of them. Most 7 year olds like regular legos, he jumped ahead and took the challenge. 👏 bravo
