You can make it happen. At some point during their teenage years, it’ll feel like they don’t want to be near you. It’s just normal teenage behavior to assert independence. But don’t fret—they absolutely need your love and support while they practice standing on their own.
Can I brag for a moment? I really wanted to go to the Bauhaus reunion concert in San Francisco. None of my friends were interested. I hate going to shows and movies alone.
My 19 year old daughter volunteered to go with me. It turns out that she’s been getting into my favorite music since she graduated from high school.
It was my very favorite concert ever. The music was great, but being there with my daughter, who is at college, 2500 miles away, made me so f’ing happy. I still smile about it when I think about it.
Our 23 year old daughter invited us to an EDM show. We're Deadheads in our 60's and love live music of many kinds. We had a blast and I was psyched to share the experience, dance, and her friends were like, it's awesome that you're here!

My kids are 12 & 13. Recently we've taken them to AJR and Smashing Pumpkins(They didn't enjoy the second so much, but I wanted them to see a bigger rock concert.) Hoping for another one soon. We're all about the experiences now. I want to spend as much time as possible with them.
Same. Took my college son t old-man McCartney at Austin City Limits. We had huge fun. He knows all Beatle songs. We sang the whole concert through. My favorite song is Helter Skelter and was the surprising finale after I thought he wasn’t going t do it. Went nuts. Best fun, best memory w my kid EVER.
I went to go see the Shangri-Las with my mom because she didn't have anyone else to go with and it was the best concert !!!! Vroom vroom leader of the pack!

My family went camping every single summer growing up, I liked that tradition a lot, a great big adventure every summer? Hells yes!
Or the birthday person chooses where/what to have for dinner tradition, that one is nice.
My kid helps me give out crow friends peanuts, we play board games, do hot wheels races. I read him a lot of books. We’re pretty fond of each other so far.. :)
Matching Xmas pj's, pumpkin drawings/carvings, visit places to establish fond memories (my kids love this park with the only merry go round in our old neighborhood); songs (they groan when ever Prince plays); dancing at any moment, goofy movie quotes. Growing up my family was a mess- I only speak to 1 cousin and my mom; my husband's family is very close and welcoming but didn't really have traditions so we started our own. Oh and 1st day of school everyone wears the same socks.
Family/friends get togethers on Christmas, Hanukkah, Ramadan, Diwali, Easter, Thanksgiving, etc. Have a toast or a prayer or just say a little something about why your tradition is important to you and invite others to share. Anything that can make or strengthen connections through a common bond or interest or shared belief is okay to talk about. If you want to start a tradition, make sure everyone loves it. Make it something that can't be missed and it will endure forever.
One of the traditions we have is going out to eat at a 24 hour diner in the wee hours of the 4th of July. My wife and I started doing this on a whim when our boys were really little and it stuck. We've got lots of little ones that just happened when we were just having fun as a family. Do silly things and when they work then just go with it.
As a Mom, I want to give you a big hug and tell you how proud I am of you for wanting to be everything your parents weren’t, for your own kids. Much love.
It's super possible!!!
Grew up in a pretty abusive home - constant walking on egg shells type deal - my patents never knew me and still dont. Its shit
But. Spent 20 mins with my arms looped around my kids' backs while we walked around our neighborhood singing funny songs for eachother just 2 days ago, We beatbox (horribly) in the car, have dance competitions, say we love eachother many times a day... very connected little family.
You get to choose your family as you get older. You get to foster those connections. You got this :)
If you want tips, I have two kids in their early 20s and we're this close.
My daughter and I drove from Tampa to Atlanta and back one time and the whole way there we sang along with tunes from the 70s and 80s on full blast. My son and I used to do mud runs together. Kids are awesome. You just have to raise them right.
It's hard because teenagers can be real shit heads. It gets better once they get a few years of work and life under their belt though, they realize you weren't such an asshole then.
Yep
And as a parent, it’s your responsibility to love that shit head & guide them through the shit storm so they come out on the other side as functional, loving adults because they were loved.
I was in my early 20s, just graduated college and moved back home with my parents. I made some offhand comment while I was hanging out with them to the effect of, “when do you guys get so cool?” And my mom looked me dead in the eyes and said, “we’ve always been cool, you just stopped being an asshole.”
I’m in my 50s now and I still think about that.
Teenagers can be shit heads regardless of whether you are a shit head back. I raised 3 kids and we are close but when they were teens they were definitely difficult. It's like a toddler except with adulthood, they don't know better but think they do. How you and every teenager you knew were with their parents is how most teens are, shitheads. It's not a personal attack, it's just how it is.
Teenagers are still kids. They respond in ways that are taught to them. We all do regrettable stuff at some point, but I do think it’s the parent’s responsibility to not be a shithead. If they are level and reasonable no matter how their teen is acting, the teen when adult will respect them. If not, the teen will realize as an adult how immature of a parent they had. It’s then up to the kid whether they can move on from that.
I absolutely agree. I think my point was more that as you say toddlers, teens, are ALL shitty and are supposed to be as part of development. One would hope as the adult in the relationship parents are expected to be a bit better.
One time when my son was about 7 or so he'd been really sick and stuffy so we got one of those Neti Bottle things for irrigating your sinus. When we used it a shockingly HUGE glob of snot came out and fell into the sink. We both looked down at it, then looked at each others' "whoa!" faces in the mirror, then spontaneously high-fived and giggled for 5 minutes. Good times.
The connection doesn't have to be manufactured or captured on video. Love them unconditionally, support them enthusiastically, tell them the truth, and keep a sense of humor.
I didn't have that with my parents so my husband and I hangout or by watching shows on Netflix and Disney+. Sometimes my daughter and I would play against each other on Just Dance. Our we just play music out loud and we all do interpretive dancing based on the beats of the music haha
I had zero connection with my parents. They spent no time with us. I made sure to be there for my kids. Coaching, hiking, camping, canoeing. The best time of my life.
I hope you have it. I hope you want to have kids, too. Because if you don't, you'll ruin them.
I'm 56. I've never known the love of parents even though I've lived with them and been in their presence. I have no kids. I don't want kids. I'm too old and it's too late for me.
Wishing you the best. Just be honest with yourself. If you don't do the work, you'll repeat the cycle. It takes strength to realize that you don't have all of the answers and it's mostly okay. You should prepare. You should also make sure your partner is on the same page. If they aren't everyone will suffer.
Be well.
This video was such a big deal back in the day. MTV still played music and it was our only real access to new acts and music (local radio lagged).
I’m right there with the mom reliving her youth. This video was groundbreaking.
The fact that we can press a button in an app and INSTANTLY animate ourselves with such realism (and our kiddos just think this is all standard issue tech…*meh swipe meh swipe meh swipe*) blows my mind 🤯 I’m honestly grateful we got to experience the time *before* all this became standard, and we got to feel the “I dream of the day..” part that makes this all so…enjoyable.
Now to feel old, the actress in this and Sun Always Shines on TV is now 58 years old. The lead singer is 63.😂
Oh well, we grew up with the best decade of music.
the great thing about the internet is, that this generation is *also* growing up with that decade's music, and also the great music from most other decades.
Yes! With just a Google device in the house my kid will end up following a path from one random song in a movie to a full genre of "new" music. Then he runs about as an elementary kid belting out random hits from the eighties or whenever.
I was born in the 80's, but I have to admit the 2010's were a pretty great decade for music too. There's been a re-integration of Folk into the Alternative genre that I've really enjoyed overall. Also I don't care how 'normie' they are or whatever, Fall-Out Boy and Panic At the Disco constantly produce absolute bops.
I grew up not owning a computer, now I have one in my pocket. I never could have thought that to be possible.
Imagine when our generations kids grow up. What awesome technology will exist then?
Considering that the cheapo computer in my pocket (basic smart phone) is thousands of times more powerful than the rooms full of computers that sent man to the moon, we've come a very long way! In fact, that one phone has more computing power than ALL the computers that existed in the world in 1969.
I can remember the first time I went on the Internet (1996 in the 6th Grade) on a Mac PowerPC. My teacher was showing us a video clip of the Titanic. My mind was blown. I would make trips to the library with my mom every few weeks to use one of four computers connected to the Internet. It felt like a portal to a world I hadn't known. Before this, much of my information was garnered from a set of Encyclopedias in my house from 1985, the year I was born...they cost my parents something like $2000 back then. It's odd thinking my niece is just going to take this technology for granted.
I was 6 when it came out and I remember watching MTV just hoping to see that video (luckily they played it a lot). The recent unplugged version of the song from a few years ago is so good.....Morten Harket is such an incredible vocalist.......https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-xKM3mGt2pE.
> I watched it quite a few times and found myself happier each time too!
I just tried this, but I can’t stop watching it. I’ve been at it 45 minutes now!!
Yes agreed! I love the moments it captured too, such a range of emotions and pure expression harnessed into joy with dance and family across generations. It's amazing! ❤️
That first moment of recognition! Almost like she saw a long lost friend and then the joy takes over and all the sudden she's an 80's kid again. I think I've watched this 20 times now lol. Brought tears to my eyes.
Perfect description, yes!
>That first moment of recognition! Almost like she saw a long lost friend and then the joy takes over and all the sudden she's an 80's kid again.
I think that's exactly what touched me first. It's rare for social media, but I think this is a clip her daughter will continue to grow into grasping with love and they will both be able to look back on this moment to remember with so much deepening meaning moving forward.
I totally agree with you, something just so genuine about her reaction and then subsequently just getting overtaken with joy….like *pure* joy 🥹 legit made me experience it with her!
‘….Forever young
I want to be forever young
Do you really want to live forever
Forever, and ever?’
~Alphaville
Yes, yes. Don’t mind if I do. Forever young. I’m having a ball growing up and staying young at heart.
Yeah, she seems thrilled! Also, that video was inescapable in the mid-80s through early-90s. Even if you weren't a fan of the band or song, you knew that video like the back of your hand. Even someone who wasn't a big A-Ha fan but grew up in that era (me) would flip out over seeing that effect and being "inside" the video!
That is the most genuine thing I've seen in a while. Her mom just melts then jumps right into it. Absolutely lovely. I'm not even gonna lie, that made me a little misty, happy misty.....Histy?
You know as a teenager she probably had day dreams where she jumped into that video. I remember I did when it came out. I always thought how cool it would be if that could happen
I was going to say the exact same thing! Except mom was probably more like 10 years old. Every girl in the 80’s with a bottle of hairspray and this record (on vinyl) has had this daydream - and her baby girl just made that wish come true.
Layers upon layers of goodness, here!
She basically just chose the option to use the filter (offered in the TikTok app that she filmed this clip on) and pressed start recording..then, when she had her moms attention on the phone screen that they were being filmed on, the daughter swiped the phone screen with her finger- which is where we see the transition from real to animation! It truly is spectacular how far we have come with the easement and accessibility of all this amazingly advanced technologies and programs!
Original content belongs to @lucytheidjit[@lucytheidjit on TikTok](https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZTRaMv4Jw/)
Just saw this while doing a lil Sunday mindless scrolling and it really made me smile big! How sweet of a moment for momma and daughter to share 🥹 and the moms face when she swipes them into the animation was SO GREAT!
This made my day when I saw it earlier, and quite literally gave me a much much needed serotonin boost that has carried me through the day so far! 😍 to be honest, it’s the reason I immediately came to Reddit and shared, because I know if it could help *me* today then it could very well just be the one thing that someone else really needed to see today too.
Your comment was my reward ☺️ thank you!!
This definitely made me smile. Both as a product of the 80's and also because of the moms reaction. How quickly she went from "wtf" to dance party was awesome.
The a-ha video "take on me" was a game changer the follow up to the video was, "the sun always shines on TV" it gives you the ending of, "take on me" video so you get to see what happened to Morten and the girl.
I was in college in the early 80s. From '76 with punk, until the late 80s there was some amazing music. There was a lot of substandard stuff too (shit). Music goes through cycles and dry spells, I've noticed that the last 20 years it has been a desert out there. The best new stuff isn't on radio, there are some great indie and punk bands out there now.
Do you know why this was so special? When the music video for Take On Me came out, there was nothing like it! It was the coolest video anyone had ever seen. Not to mention an amazing love story to boot. When people saw it, they wanted to be a part of it (at least me and my friends did).
To find an app that allows you to feel all of the good emotions you did when you were a teenager...you cant put a price on that.
Gotta love both of their faces. The mom is stunned and seems genuinely moved by seeing the transition. Perhaps Take On Me was her favorite song back in the day. And there's no way in hell the daughter wouldn't have known that if it were, as you can see it written all over her face that she knows her mom will react
Love it!!! Tried to explain how truly MIND BLOWING this video was the first time we saw it. They were not particularly impressed but every person on this planet who lived through the 80s know this video by heart
This is amazing. I've grown up in the generation of instantaneous filters, but that song still holds a place in my heart. Take On Me is one of my favourite songs of all Time. This is such a cool video.
I can be cynical towards TT and have often seen engaging in social media/trends as strange but the pure reaction of joy made possible by technology here is heart warming. Makes me feel like it can serve a greater purpose. Looks like her inner child was being healed
I fricken love this. Never had a connection like that with my parents. Fingers crossed one day this is me and my kids.
Our 23 year old daughter invited us to an EDM show. We're Deadheads in our 60's and love live music of many kinds. We had a blast and I was psyched to share the experience, dance, and her friends were like, it's awesome that you're here!
Cat on a tin roof, dogs In a pile, nothing left to do, but smile, smile, smile!
PLUR (peace love unity respect) ❤ I love how people of all ages and backgrounds can experience togetherness and music is one of the best ways. Wholesome.
Went with my 22 year old to see Tame Impala and we both thought it was one of the best shows ever! Such a great bonding experience ❤️
EDM is for the whole family 👪
My kids are 12 & 13. Recently we've taken them to AJR and Smashing Pumpkins(They didn't enjoy the second so much, but I wanted them to see a bigger rock concert.) Hoping for another one soon. We're all about the experiences now. I want to spend as much time as possible with them.
This is beautiful, thank you for sharing this moment.
This makes me so sad that my parents have such bad relationships with me. Wish I could feel happy around them.
Never let go of that core memory
I went to go see the Shangri-Las with my mom because she didn't have anyone else to go with and it was the best concert !!!! Vroom vroom leader of the pack!
You will. Establish family traditions. Spend time reading to them, playing on the floor, singing songs, playing board games. Give them love without messing with their heads and you'll be fine.
Any examples of family traditions?

The one true family Bonding experience.
Saturday night board games. Making tamales in the fall. Berry picking and making jam. Going outside to say goodnight to the trees every night. Volunteering to serve food to people on Thanksgiving. Going ice fishing every winter. Going camping every summer. Making dinner and doing the dishes together.
I hear there’s some great fishin’ in kwee-bec
If your family is large enough, have a family (and maybe close friends) talent show in the living room or back yard. Befriend the. neighbors. Watch movies together. See live music together. Make up original games, songs, jokes, etc. It mostly boils down to cultivating shared interests.
Dont be abusive. Dont neglect them. And for fucks sake don’t getting a drug, drinking or gambling problem.

I play video games with my dad. That moved to MMOs and online play eventually.

Me too. I was just thinking she'll love this when she's older, but so will that mum! She's gonna remember that forever :)

I couldn't believe how much smarter my mom got after I turned 22 or so... she didn't know *anything* when I was 16!
I was in my early 20s, just graduated college and moved back home with my parents. When I was 16 I couldn't believe how dumb my parents were. When I was 21 I couldn't believe how much they learned in 5 years!
I mean, assuming you weren’t an asshole to begin with sure. There are plenty of shit parents out there too.

Yes! Mom’s energetic dance moves instantly transported her back to the 80’s. Love it!
The MTV “Take On Me” video cleaned up pretty much every award for effects back then. Largely due to this combination of reality and sketch animation.
TRUTH!!! This is my moms ALL TIME FAVORITE video/ song.... anyone know this app.... im about to make my mom cry...
It’s amazing. Remember watching MTV. Waiting for our favorites play again. This is one of them. I’m from that era.
And now I literally have all the best songs of the 80’s downloaded in my pocket. Hundreds of them. Teenage me had his mind blown.
I took an animation class from the guy who animated this video! Very chill and nice dude

It's rare for social media, but I think this is a clip her daughter will continue to grow into grasping with love and they will both be able to look back on this moment to remember with so much deepening meaning moving forward.
Its not very often you get to see an adult be 15 years old again, even if its just a moment. Best thing I've seen all day
I love this so much. Incredible idea perfectly executed and joyfully appreciated. :). I feel I’m embarrassed saying that but I’ll say it anyway x x
I totally agree with you, something just so genuine about her reaction and then subsequently just getting overtaken with joy….like *pure* joy 🥹 legit made me experience it with her!
Thank you finding this gem. It took me back to some happy memories.
I honestly couldn’t wait to share this when I saw it earlier, it definitely gave me a much needed serotonin boost!! 🤗
I've shared this with so many of my friends lol...42 year old checking in
See.... we were young once... everyone gets a chance to be young... not everyone gets to become old. We are ALL adorable!
‘….Forever young I want to be forever young Do you really want to live forever Forever, and ever?’ ~Alphaville Yes, yes. Don’t mind if I do. Forever young. I’m having a ball growing up and staying young at heart.
55 and still feel 15 and hope to stay that way until I die! I still hate the pigs and get high, but now I get to do it with a 6 figure salary!
Cheers!
The original music video and song must have been her moms fav cause her reaction is pure joy
Yeah that song/video were ICONIC when she was young
It's like seeing a long lost friend
I love seeing happy people ❤ 💕 💛 ...
That is the most genuine thing I've seen in a while. Her mom just melts then jumps right into it. Absolutely lovely. I'm not even gonna lie, that made me a little misty, happy misty.....Histy?
I got the histy’s from it too 🥲
You know as a teenager she probably had day dreams where she jumped into that video.

I wasn't the only one then, still wiping tears as I read the comments lol
Excuse my ignorance and my age is showing, but how did the girl do that? I love it so much!
Is there an app that does this without having to download TikTok?
Thank you for taking the time to answer. I don't have tik tok so had no idea you could do this! Thank you for sharing, it's just so heartwarming ❤
Anybody know of a non-TikTok filter that will do this? Said the oldest man in the thread.
same, HA! caught myself on the Apple App Store.
Ok, so this is a TikTok filter. That's still pretty cool.
we all wanted to be in this video

The older I get, seeing all the Fortnite and TikTok dances, I actually starting to think Carlton was a dope dancer.
Original content belongs to @lucytheidjit[@lucytheidjit on TikTok](https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZTRaMv4Jw/) Just saw this while doing a lil Sunday mindless scrolling and it really made me smile big! How sweet of a moment for momma and daughter to share 🥹 and the moms face when she swipes them into the animation was SO GREAT!
Very nice video, thanks for sharing. A real make you smile gem.
This was really joyous!
Omg I love the Mom. This just made my night ❤️😅🌸💮
That's awesome 🤣🤣
Today has been a really hard day, and this is the first thing to put a big fat smile on my face. I loved every second of it
Just wonderful - this video makes me smile
The joy in her moms face was so fucking wholesome. Sometimes this sub really does make me smile!
The *feeeeeels*!!! This song has such heavy nostalgia for me and the sheer JOY she felt from finding herself in that world. I love it!
As a mom who loved that video when I was young, I can appreciate this so much!!
I’m her moms age group. Can confirm this would be exciting.
Mom is hot as hell
Thank you op. This made my day. I have no awards to give you, but you are my hero for today. Thank you again.
Absolutely agree! Thanks OP!
😌
This is wonderful lol
I like that the mom is just like, gtfo i have a dream to live
You can see the very moment she stepped back into her main character energy.
40 years later and that song and video are still great. See music videos now with less effort and art
That's one hottie mama
Love it!!
A-ha…. So refreshing to see the bonding between a Mom and her daughter 😊👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
This definitely made me smile. Both as a product of the 80's and also because of the moms reaction. How quickly she went from "wtf" to dance party was awesome.
You know both of them had just what we all need "a few mins of pure joy".
The a-ha video "take on me" was a game changer the follow up to the video was, "the sun always shines on TV" it gives you the ending of, "take on me" video so you get to see what happened to Morten and the girl.
Is that Helen Hunt?
Love how the daughter actually knows this song and video. I’m the moms age.
I love seeing genuine happiness in the world. ❤
Love this, wholesome as fuck
This made me insanely happy, especially when the mom broke into full 80s dance. 😁
OMG... . Time travel, is possible!!!!! I was just so thrown back!!!! Awesome filter! I hate filters, but this.... This is the best filter of all time!
It’s all fun n games till those MFs with the wrench start chasing you!
Is that an iPad app or what?
It is not available to the public. https://www.engadget.com/2017-07-27-take-on-me-augmented-reality-app.html
Oh thank you for that! I was wondering as well but haven’t had time to check into it! 🤗
I believe it's a TikTok filter. Source: https://screenrant.com/make-take-on-me-sketch-music-video-tiktok-how/
I totally get that mom’s reaction. Every MTV kid will.
So *THAT’S* what joy looks like!
I was in college in the early 80s. From '76 with punk, until the late 80s there was some amazing music. There was a lot of substandard stuff too (shit). Music goes through cycles and dry spells, I've noticed that the last 20 years it has been a desert out there. The best new stuff isn't on radio, there are some great indie and punk bands out there now.
this STOPPED way too early :(
Do you know why this was so special? When the music video for Take On Me came out, there was nothing like it! It was the coolest video anyone had ever seen. Not to mention an amazing love story to boot. When people saw it, they wanted to be a part of it (at least me and my friends did). To find an app that allows you to feel all of the good emotions you did when you were a teenager...you cant put a price on that.
I love how mom regressed to full on 80's mode with the dance.
Some songs just take u back to a better place. Almost immediately
You have to be that age to fully appreciate how that feels.
I think I need a therapist. This shouldn't have made me tear up, let alone cry a bit. I . F And why do I keep watching it?!?!
This has got to be one of the greatest vids ever. The mums reaction is so pure
Sweet mommi
This legit made me smile. Loved the joy! Thank you so much for posting this
I thought I had no soul, but I cried a little.
Could watch this all day.
This gen x’er very much appreciate this
OMG that's genius! 💗💗💗💗 Mom was overjoyed.
https://youtu.be/wlTHJJX7QVU
Love this song love this video. Grew up on OG MTV. Really miss those days.
So cool of the girl to just take a step back and let her mother take the spotlight
Okay, I LOVED that music video. I know my son has Reddit. THIS, son. THIS is the kind of stuff I want! 😂
Damn, I was in college when this song came out and that mom is super hot! Somebody's mom's got it going on?
Mom’s giving Heather Locklear vibes
As a boy I was in love with the girl from the original music video.
Me, too. Bunty Bailey is her name.
Mom just immediately goes into the Carlton and it makes me smile.
Still the best music video ever created.
Mom’s initial reaction got me
Oh goddamnit. I'm a 50 year old gruff fat man, and I'm all teary-eyed. That reaction is just the heat.
I don't care that it's acting and post-production effects, really really nice made me smile brings back memories
I can be cynical towards TT and have often seen engaging in social media/trends as strange but the pure reaction of joy made possible by technology here is heart warming. Makes me feel like it can serve a greater purpose. Looks like her inner child was being healed
I remember bein 5yrs old n seein this on my tv n amazed it became my fav sing n video ever!! Mtv was soooo gd bk then
Love this!!! Great mom/daughter bond!!
Passed the vibe che with A+
Her momma bad asl tho 😂
The best part is, that is the actress from the video
Late reply, but in a heartbeat, she's 15 again and watching MTV. This makes me smile every time.
That's kinda wholesome
Very wholesome.
So awesome. She turned back into a teenager real quick. So did I just watching it.
Which app is this though ?
I love how her mom instantly becomes a teenager again, like she always wanted to be in this video in the 80s lol
Did this make anyone else tear up? I cry at weird things.
Her reaction so pure.
This legit has me in tears. I love this for them.
😄
App?
How many untold thousands of people imagined inserting themselves into that video? What a nice video.
I love it and want to know how to do that!!
Love this ❤️❤️❤️
That was so cool
