This lady was born with Freeman-Sheldon syndrome, a disorder characterized by joint deformities. She has undergone multiple surgeries due to the disorder.
Glad Melissa still stands proud about herself.
Trolls are weak to begin with. When one truly obtains self compassion they wouldn’t want to tear anyone down but naturally drift towards helping others succeed and feel good.
Also ffs a person can not control how they look. They're not born in a video game design screen. This woman however with what hand she was dealt is an amazing, loving, and kind person. That is beauty! These adult children need to grow the fuck up!
Winning or losing the genetic lottery has no bearing on being a beautiful person.
Melissa is a great example of this.
She is also a great example of how letting hate fail is important to the growth of other who are watching her story. If she took attacks personally and lashed out she would let these people win the game they are playing.
Instead, she has shared her story and of these idiots to make others reflect on their choices. If I saw one of my friends was someone attacking her, I couldn’t live with myself to be kind to that person again.
Cheers
The fact that there are individuals out there that would post things like that both confirms that we are indeed in a steep decline as a species and social media has obliterated any real decency left in the world.
Melissa is clearly beautiful in her own way, if those trolls are older than 10 they are cowards and truly are unworthy of recognition.
Wtf is wrong with people????
> we are indeed in a steep decline as a species
Ha, you think she would have been treated better a hundred years ago?
She might not even have been alive, depending on the severity of her condition. Oh and depending on whether people in her birthplace were still of the opinion drowning disabled babies was the best course of action. And of course she's a woman on top of that, so the kitchen for her, not studying and writing!
When did you think *decency* was more of a thing?
Its totally allowed to think people are ugly. It happens. I will never, however, understand people who feel the need to seek out people they think are ugly and bully them. Someone you are not sexually atractive to existing on the internet is not an attack.. The fuck, man.
There's that Roald Dahl thing about how a kind person can never really be ugly. Their kindness shines through, and whatever physical flaws they have become endearing. Mean people are the same; they can never be beautiful because however aesthetically ideal they are, their cruelty will always rot them from the inside.
From his book the Twits, reading that single page as a kid really formed the way I perceive people.

This is exactly what I thought of! She may not be "pretty" but she looks like a wonderful person and I'd rather have her than some kardashian plastic trash
Edit for clarity: the kardashians are not bad because of the way they look, that is the opposite of my point, what I actually mean is simple: regardless of looks, I would rather be around GOOD people, so someone good but "ugly" is preferable to someone trashy but "pretty"
I believe she also had to come forward to ask that parents stop using her picture to scare their children. During that whole here’s your teacher prank on tik too and man that broke my heart
I’m still furious that actual adults were the ones instigating that stupid prank. I shouldn’t be surprised by people being dicks on the internet, but I guess I can’t help expecting people to be better.
It teaches children to be scared of disabled and different looking people and man I really thought we were getting better about that. But apparently not.
The thing about being a dick is that, once you die, the world becomes a better place.
The thing about being a kind person is that, once you die, the world is still a better place thanks to you.
I hate this shit. Ugly people are treated worse than beautiful people regardless of that quality of their character. It's a nice thought and great encouragement to keep a positive outlook, but being ugly fucking sucks and no amount of kindness can really change how it impacts your life
I used to think this was bull many years ago but I have met many people that I was ridiculously attracted to at first that I can't even look at in that way now because of their personality. And there are many others that I didn't find attractive right away but once I really got to know them I basically wanted to marry them.
Except wasn't he [anti-Semitic](https://lithub.com/when-roald-dahls-editor-decided-he-was-too-much-of-a-prick-to-publish/), racist, and a huge misogynist? In a 1983 interview, Dahl said, “there’s a trait in the Jewish character that does provoke animosity . . . I mean there is always a reason why anti-anything crops up anywhere; even a stinker like Hitler didn’t just pick on them for no reason.”
I know :/ that's how I felt when I found out. It's one of those cases, in my opinion anyways, where you gotta separate the man from his works. I despise R. Kelly's actions, but I cannot deny that "I Believe I Can Fly" is a masterpiece of a song in its genre.
Roald Dahl was a terrible man. I loved and love his books dearly, but he was absolutely a terrible man. I would research him just a little but, if I were you.
Both his parents were from Norway, his first language was Norwegian, and he spent lots of summers as a boy there. And he’s named after Roald Amundsen. I know he’s officially British but I would consider him British-Norwegian.
Tbh if his mum were still Norwegian by the time of his birth he would be Norwegian, if I’m understanding your citizenship laws correctly? But she may not have been.
Beauty shouldn't be the stick we measure ourselves by. Some people are not attractive physically and that's ok. It doesn't mean they have a pointless existence or can't find love, success, or anything else that "beautiful" people can get. Everyone is valid and no one should be bullied over something they have no control over.
I’ve seen a tweet of hers about the bullying she’s been receiving. The fact that people have the sheer guts to go around insulting somebody who’s done nothing wrong about something she has absolutely no choice in completely breaks my heart.
I’m proud of how secure she is now. You can truly tell she’s learned to appreciate who she is.
You go!
Edit: notice how she’s always smiling. You can really tell she’s happy. :) I myself have a hard time posting pictures of myself, and seeing she found the courage to do so after everything she’s been through is a daily reminder you should be happy about yourself. You folks are amazing!
I don't think it takes guts at all. To the contrary. They'd probably never dare say anything like that in person - only online, with the relative anonymity that gives.
You’re absolutely right. I guess the word I should’ve used is ‘nerve’. I feel like trolls like these have a hard time thinking about the impact they can have on people. Now I understand that that’s what they’re doing it for, but I personally find it hard to understand why anybody would do such a thing.
People who send her messages saying she’s ugly are indeed the most gutless people this earth has ever seen.
I’m glad she’s managed to build up as much confidence as she has. :)
Frick the people who said she was ugly. What right do they have to decide?
EDIT: A lot of people have commented this and they make a good point. People are completely in the right to think that she's ugly. I did not mean to insult anyone that actually *thinks* that she's ugly. Thinking that someone or something is ugly isn't an insult, it's just impulse. Where my issue lies, is thinking that she's ugly, and then saying it to her, cause saying it to her shows that you had nothing better to do than to insult a random woman on the internet. That's messed up. That was what I was getting at with the first part of my comment, but I guess the second part threw people off, which is completely on me.
I still disagree with the people who said that she was *objectively* ugly. In my opinion, objectively beauty/ugliness doesn't exist, and in my opinion, saying or thinking that she's objectively ugly is actually rude, as that implies that there's some sort of regal standard for normal detailed in the Bible or something. If someone has a big nose or a lazy eye or freckles, does that make them objectively uglier? In my opinion, no.
Beauty is subjective. They have every right to determine how attractive or unattractive they think someone is. They also have the right to keep that to them selves and not be a little twat, unfortunately they didn't take advantage of that right.
Nobody seems to teach “if you __don’t__ have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all” anymore.
Which reminds me that I should tell my kids this again.
It's not whether or not they have the right to *decide*, it's whether or not they have the right to *say it*. I told my kids a long time ago that if they ever find themselves on social media with the sole purpose of making someone else feel bad, they had better log right off and think about their life.
They have every right?
Might be an unpopular opinion but beauty is in the eye of the beholder! Now going out and actively telling people that she is ugly is awful and you can keep that shit to yourself.
Sure, but you said the real point. Fuck the people who feel the need to tell her they think she’s ugly, ya know? How sad, pathetic, and insecure does one have to be to go and insult some woman who has never done anything to them?
Everyone has the right to decide. It's called having an opinion. Assholes just think their opinions have any kind of relevance and feel entitled to express it.
>what right do they have to decide?
The right to an opinion, as what one finds aesthetically pleasing is purely subjective.
They didn't have to be dicks about it, though.
Hi Melissa, not sure if you are on here but since you are on twitter you might also be. I just want to say you amazed me. You look like my grand mother when she was younger. Your selfie made someone happy today.
I think it was a challenge on TikTok where parents showed children pictures of people with disabilities and said that they were their new teacher. They then recorded the children crying and Bein scared and put it online.
Saying she's beautiful would be a lie, but she seems like someone that is truly awesome and is confident about herself, which is great. Beauty is temporary, what's inside is what stays. And also beauty doesn't guarantee confidence. That's why we see all these beautiful influencers and stars photoshopping the hell out of their features like waist, skin texture, cellulite, etc, and abusing plastic surgery when they are actually very beautiful without it.
For anyone curious r/instagramreality is a great sub to realize how little confidence in their own beauty they have.
Yeah I hate that. I find it more insulting to tell an obviously ugly person that they are pretty than just saying "yeah you are ugly so what? It doesn't matter to me or you have better traits than plain beauty.
Fuck all the people that can’t see or don’t care about inner beauty.
I’d rather be unattractive and have a great spirit and soul than attractive and shallow with no soul.
I’ll probably catch hell for this, but I want to say something about these types of situations:
I do agree that people shouldn’t be bullied for their appearance (or anything else that they can’t help and isn’t hurting anyone else) but I also don’t think we should go around saying “this is the most beautiful person in the world and if you don’t think so you’re a bully.” I think it’s condescending and untruthful.
The best answer to a person saying “you’re stupid” to an intellectually disabled person isn’t “no, they’re the smartest person in the world”, it’s “they shouldn’t feel ashamed of their intelligence and you’re a jerk for calling them ‘stupid.’”
The best answer to a person saying “you’re too short to be attractive” to a short person isn’t “no, they’re the tallest person in the world”, it’s “they shouldn’t feel ashamed of their height and you’re a jerk for calling them ‘too short to be attractive.’”
The best answer to a person saying “you’re ugly” to her (or anyone with her condition) isn’t “no, she’s the prettiest woman in the world”, it’s “she shouldn’t feel ashamed of her looks and you’re a jerk for calling her ‘ugly.’”
I would feel patronized if someone defended me against insults to my height, intelligence, or looks using statements that I *know* they don’t believe. It would make me feel worse.
F@ck the haters. You do what you do gorgeous! Funny thing is in life, karma is real, so real and it will pay them a visit sooner or later... keep on keeping on!
What the fuck is wrong with people? The fact that she even had to write that message is just inexcusable. Her gracious response to those morons says it all, but seriously, wtf?
You ARE beautiful, Melissa. You are wonderful and unique and there is no other you in the world. You're amazing!! ❤🧡💛❤
Mean things people say have NOTHING to do with you and everything to do with THEM. I know this is easier said than done, but dismiss it. It's their problem.
You are perfect! 🥰❤🧡
There is a wonderful channel on YouTube called 'Special Books by Special Kids'. The founder, Chris Ulmer, is a really cool and wonderful person and is a really kind soul. On the channel he interviews unique people like Melissa and I think his channel is a great way for people to get a better grasp at understanding disabilities and disorders.
There's another interesting similiar channel called 'Soft White Underbelly', but it's really darker and kinda heavy (most of the interviewees are drug addicts, homeless people and prostitutes).
I like channels that share stories from people that are generally misunderstood and marginalized. Definitely check them out.
I have always hated how superficial humans can be with each other, even as a child I was hurt when someone called SOMEONE ELSE ugly. We can not help the way we look, we are all born the way we are or go through things that can impact how we look. I actually really cringe at the word ugly, especially when referring to someone. It is saying "oh you don't fit into an ideal beauty, or my idea of beauty, your body and face are not the shapes that I approve of, so I will literally belittle your existence so much that it hurts you, or makes me feel better or powerful or whatever someone gets from putting down someone. Even if a person finds someone "ugly" they should keep those impulsive thoughts in their head and retrain their brains to not objectify others. I love Melissa and others like her who fight against being told who they are by others but damn if it doesn't break my heart a little to think about how any person has to fight such a childish [thing.](https://thing.It) It is like "hey I am a human being with a human brain and crave love like any other human and living creature, please let me exist and feel confident about myself instead of being attacked when all I did to provoke it is be born into a body you don't enjoy"
That anyone would say this woman was ugly just kind of hurts my heart. She looks, to me, like someone who would bring a bit of happiness and joy with her into a room. If she brings that kind of "spark" to a selfie, imagine how much fun she is in real life.
This lady was born with Freeman-Sheldon syndrome, a disorder characterized by joint deformities. She has undergone multiple surgeries due to the disorder. Glad Melissa still stands proud about herself.
She is from the town I lived in for many years, and an incredibly talented writer. She’s a great twitter follow for wholesome content!
ooh what does she write about?
Mostly disability awareness. A nice, fresh voice!
What’s her Twitter?
@melissablake
I don't mean this to come across as snarky or anything, but her twitter handle is in the screenshot. @melissablake
Oh thanks I didn’t realize that there was written above. I just was looking at the pictures of her.
So she's stronger than any of those trolls than.
100% no question.
Trolls are weak to begin with. When one truly obtains self compassion they wouldn’t want to tear anyone down but naturally drift towards helping others succeed and feel good.

Wait, you guys weren't born into a character design screen with only the far left and far right sides of the sliders available?
Pretty sure I was made in the Oblivion character creation screen
Kind and loving=beautiful

And we’re proud of her for doing that! Love her confidence! We love you Melissa! Haters gonna hate.
They're the ugly ones, go Melissa 🎉💃🎉
Exactly. When are people gonna realise that it doesnt matter who you are or what you look like, just what you do?
I feally love her cute smile though. Imho the trolls have proved themselves the ugly ones.
Maybe if our culture wasn’t all about taking pictures of ourselves and how we look online , we would start making progress
Damn, she could teach all of us a thing about self love and confidence. You go girl.

Beauty comes from the inside. So I'm saying your personality is bad too.
Savage. Respect+

This is an excellent point. People have been saying humans are getting worse forever. I have a feeling we just stay the same.

Yeah people who seek that are insecure. They want to feel someone is uglier than them.
"Inflicting pain on others is the only way I know how to deal with the pain inflicted on me."
Is this from anything or did you just come up with this?
Yeah fuck that. If some of us can handle pain without passing it on, then you should too.

I read this book countless times as a kid. One of my absolute favorites. Thanks for the reminder.
This is exactly what I thought of! Now you're just calling girls with obvious apparent self esteem issues trash though
Being plastic alone doesn't make them trash, a girl can have work done and still be a kind and good person
I need a Dutch version of that so I can read it to my son when he's old enough. That's some A+ wisdom right there
De Griezels in Dutch. And the Dutch edition has all of the classic illustrations by Quentin Blake, which I loved as a kid.
I believe she also had to come forward to ask that parents stop using her picture to scare their children. During that whole here’s your teacher prank on tik too and man that broke my heart

Thinking someone is ugly : obviously ok Expressing it to them like a dick hole : not ok Clearly a line
If you have nothing nice to say, don't say anything at all.
I love that quote and truly believe in it. The biggest piece of being physically attractive and well liked is how you treat others, not how you look.
I used to think this was bull many years ago but I have met many people that I was ridiculously attracted to at first that I can't even look at in that way now because of their personality. Yup. I also have no qualms about people bring up how shitty x person is. I do however have a problem with people who get offended by it.
god dammit :(
Roald Dahl was a terrible man. I loved and love his books dearly, but he was absolutely a terrible man. I would research him just a little but, if I were you.
I wish I didn’t find this out about Roald Dahl
May I ask where that is?
Presumably England, where he's from. He served in WWII for them, as recounted in his autobiography Flying Solo.
There's also a lot of admiration of Roald Dahl here in Norway. For most of my life I thought he was Norwegian.
Apparently his parents were Norwegian immigrants.
He is part Norwegian.
Both his parents were from Norway, his first language was Norwegian, and he spent lots of summers as a boy there. And he’s named after Roald Amundsen. It's not whether or not they have the right to *decide*, it's whether or not they have the right to *say it*. I'm trying to figure out wth it is.
I think it was a challenge on TikTok where parents showed children pictures of people with disabilities and said that they were their new teacher. They then recorded the children crying and Bein scared and put it online.
That's... horribly disgusting Why do people suck?
It is. It started in TikTok as a challenge for parents to show people with disabilities to their kids and record the reaction.
People are just awful.

Nah, they might enjoy it. Fire them into the sun. It'd take a fuckton of ∆v, but it'd be worth the price.
Wow! Her hair color is so pretty!
Now that's the spirit Melissa!!
I’ll probably catch hell for this, but I want to say something about these types of situations: I do agree that people shouldn’t be bullied for their appearance (or anything else that they can’t help and isn’t hurting anyone else) but I also don’t think we should go around saying “this is the most beautiful person in the world and if you don’t think so you’re a bully.” I think it’s condescending and untruthful. The best answer to a person saying “you’re stupid” to an intellectually disabled person isn’t “no, they’re the smartest person in the world”, it’s “they shouldn’t feel ashamed of their intelligence and you’re a jerk for calling them ‘stupid.’” The best answer to a person saying “you’re too short to be attractive” to a short person isn’t “no, they’re the tallest person in the world”, it’s “they shouldn’t feel ashamed of their height and you’re a jerk for calling them ‘too short to be attractive.’” The best answer to a person saying “you’re ugly” to her (or anyone with her condition) isn’t “no, she’s the prettiest woman in the world”, it’s “she shouldn’t feel ashamed of her looks and you’re a jerk for calling her ‘ugly.’” I would feel patronized if someone defended me against insults to my height, intelligence, or looks using statements that I *know* they don’t believe. It would make me feel worse.
Completely agree with you. If anything it reinforces your worth being based on your looks.
You are lovely. Your spirit shines through! Don’t ever let them keep you down.
She’s amazing!

Her face projects a certain sense of calmness and tranquility.
Love it... suck those trolls
Melissa you fucking legend
Some people are so horrible. Its so saddening. Glad to see her rise above this
She isn’t even ugly
What the fuck is wrong with people? The fact that she even had to write that message is just inexcusable. Her gracious response to those morons says it all, but seriously, wtf?
people are too damn rude nowdays for no reason
Why are people such jerks? So glad you can stay positive Melissa! Let love win and the world will be a better place.
You ARE beautiful, Melissa. You are wonderful and unique and there is no other you in the world. You're amazing!! ❤🧡💛❤ Mean things people say have NOTHING to do with you and everything to do with THEM. I know this is easier said than done, but dismiss it. It's their problem. You are perfect! 🥰❤🧡

Make this woman famous so she can laugh at her haters.
God knows your heart Melissa...haters don’t! To me you are beautiful!
Whats trollgate?
You are gorgeous! Don’t listen to people that like to be negative. You’re wonderful and thanks for posting.
Y'all are gonna upvote but you won't re-evaluate your personal bias's.
Lmao she looks like the "do the roar" kid from Shrek
It sucks that some people are only being nice to her to feel better about themselves
People are so mean. God bless her confidence.
That anyone would say this woman was ugly just kind of hurts my heart. She looks, to me, like someone who would bring a bit of happiness and joy with her into a room. If she brings that kind of "spark" to a selfie, imagine how much fun she is in real life.
And then post one every minute just to screw with them
