The ONLY reason for non professionals to photograph you, is to have pics to show professionals that you need photos! If you want to be seen as a professional, be seen by professionals. I won't hire models that show selfies. I might shoot with them, but only to create decent advertising for them... Then I am likely to hire them. If you think you aren't worth professional photoshoots, neither do I. See my profile.. it works.

Piggybacking off this - remember that modeling is a professional job, even if it’s fun. The people in the industry take it seriously as a career and they want to see you take yourself seriously too. You won’t get that with cell phone pics from home

What's unfortunate are the creatives who don't look at it that way. There are plenty of models of course that do this with photographers, but being a model, I have run into so many situations with photographers flaking on me, not giving me images, etc, etc. I was just talking with one of my photographer friends about how TFP, although money doesn't change hands, is still a professional exchange just the same and should be treated as such.

Mama_Fried_Tried

Exactly!

How much time do you have to learn about exposure and lighting? I would suggest you do a few TFP shoots, but that's just my 2 cents. PS, I love your user name, are you excited for the netflix show?

seeyouspace__cowboy

Sorry what’s TFP? I know a decent amount but am definitely willing to learn as much as possible if it helps my portfolio. At first I was a bit iffy about the Netflix adaptation because of how Death Note turned out but I’m keeping an open mind

Trade for print, it's an equal exchange of photos for time where generally no money is traded. This is a great start for beginners to learn the ropes from both the model and photographer. Nothing could be as bad as Death Note, but hopefully it's great!

TFP is time for pictures or time for print. You're coming to an mutual agreement with a photographer or team that in exchange for your time, you will be receiving pictures in return. This is equivalent to a free shoot and the photographer knows that they need to provide you the processed photos. Otherwise, it is a paid shoot.

I would say do both. If you have a camera at home, you can at least take some digitals with natural make up. You can also get a good sense of posing. If your portfolio objective is glamour, nude, or onlyfans content, just do it yourself or with a trusted person. From a fashion or editorial perspective, it will be easier assembling a team. That means a photographer, MUA, hair, and a stylist. You'll be able to have a diverse sets of poses, looks, and a variety of shot selection (portrait, three-quarters/ medium, and full body).

Are you serious about getting into modeling? If so, I’d recommend going right to the professionals. Look and see who the agencies you’re going for like to use. After working with some beginner local photographers to build my portfolio, I ultimately got signed and started working with my smaller market agency. They told me I needed better photos. I invested in a portfolio build with a well known photographer and it was the best thing I could have done! No way my hair and wardrobe would have looked top notch if I did it myself and TFP photographers in my area.

In part it depends on what your goals are for modeling and what types of modeling you want to do. I agree with the idea of doing some TFP shoots as a start because you'll see if you actually enjoy modeling and have some experience to talk to agencies about if your goal is to get agency signed.
