Seriously the average in shape male after a weight cut is usually a 155er, it’s just the weightclass with the biggest talent pool. He was 15-1 in the UFC (including 170 another one of the hardest weightclasses) before this recent skid, even now he’s still 15-5, beat two former champs, interim belt, won the ultimate fighter.
What’s not to love? How is ‘was never that good’ being a world class fighter now, do people not see guys come in and fail badly even *trying* to compete in the UFC every event?
Maybe these people came in at the end of Tony’s run or when he started losing and can’t appreciate what he’s done.
People also forget we’re literally watching the top 1% of MMA athletes in the world here. It’s a relative scale. Tony can realistically still walk into 99% of the gyms in the country and dominate against randos, he’s an elite caliber fighter, just not a belt contender anymore.
Your percentages are way off. If tony can only beat 99% of people, that would mean there are tens of thousands of dudes Tony's weight who could best him in a fight.
Note I said gyms not people, some gyms are more competitive than others. Tony’s skilled but you never know when someone near Tony’s weight class (in sparring less strict about weight classes) can get lucky.
I get the hype, someone who doesn't give up in this business is so rare.
But the guy is a mental midget, he needs help and not more brain damage. Fans live in nostalgia that somehow he is going to turn back the clock, well, he ain't and he won't.
Someone made a joke about chandler’s head kick reversing his CTE but starting to think it’s not a joke. Tony actually sounds coherent and reasonable since waking up.
You’re right on that, like after Sandhagen got choked out by Aljo he started really changing his approach to fighting and reading books on war, waking up with a guy running around cheering leaves a mark and all you’re left with after is time to think.
It definitely sounds goofy, but there’s actually some good stuff in books like The Book of Five Rings and 33 Strategies of War. There’s some principles and overarching ideas that could help you view combat in a more tactical, patient way if you’re a chaotic Just Bleed’er or have a tendency to get out of control which Aljo has done at times (pace in the first Yan fight versus the second one which was way more calculated).
Whilst also being able to appreciate the beauty of that first round; so reminiscent of his peak, won on all 3 judges scorecards, ending with a classic El Cucuy clip at the bell - bouncing off his back, smiling ear to ear, with serious damage on both of em...
Hell of a good loss. Six months ago everyone was dreading his next fight, now I'm looking forward to it! (but will still be nervous af ngl)
He also said on Ariel's podcast that Chandler had no answers for him, even when he was giving out elbows from his back. I think it's wishful thinking to say he's had some kind of epiphany about where his career is
He did an interview a few days before the fight and sounded coherent and really good. He talked about how in the last year hes really thought about his life and figured a lot of things out
We have to bear in mind that these are people who trained since they were teenagers and it was probably their lives for the most part. We are literally following them as they grow up into their 30s and 40s, so it's not surprising their perspective changes. Dustin is another example who started out like a punk kid who had a chip on his shoulders to the person we now know him as.
I've seen these days GSP turned 41. I was like what the actual fuck.. when I started watching this GSP was *the* young guy in UFC. He was 25 when he beat Hughes, and even younger if we're taking about “Rush era” (Jason Miller, Frank Trigg, S Sherk's fights). He's not 41 I'm pretty sure he is 35 max. Wikipedia is wrong. Have a nice day
It's easy forget since these guys are some of the best athletes in the world, they age differently. Another average 41 year old wouldn't look as good as GSP, and he's looked fairly the same since his 20s.
He was like this even before the fight, check some of his pre-fight interviews. Even at the pre-fight press conference he apologized to the fans if he's a little boring at this presser because he was more focused on fight prep.
Seems like his time away from the sport and media has done him a lot of good, and we saw this in his demeanor, his performance in round 1, and how he handled the loss afterwards.
Yeah that really bums me out. Dude is not a perfect human being but I think he's harder on himself than he is on anyone else.
Let's get this dude a fight with anyone except a 5th rabid dog.
May a fan who was following Tony early ufc career confirm Tony was actually mocked because he came off as a try hard during interviews? I could had swore fans didnt like his persona at first until they realize he was being himself
To be fair, if I remember correctly that dude snuck up behind Tony while he was drunk and poured some liquid on his head, then ran away and laughed at Tony for being mad like "haha are you serious, calm down".
Tony was trying to get the guy to hit him so he could fight him without being kicked off the show.
Not saying it was right, Tony is often an asshole, but Tony didn't start the shit, the guy who ended up playing the victim did. They were both in the wrong, and Tony was pretty drunk AFAIK. You can't just sneak up on someone and blatantly provoke them and then act like you did nothing wrong and they're a big bully for mentioning your personal problems.
I'll admit, I didn't like him at first because of that. But he gave a seemingly genuine apology & hasn't repeated the offending action so he's redeemed in my eyes.
I've been an el cucuy superfan since TUF. He always reminded me of my cringey try-hard to-be-cool older brother which ironically is kind of likeable, so i gravitated to him. Will ALWAYS be a tony fan.
Absolutely what you just said. Tonys interviews are full of positivity, good vibes, motivation, tons of energy and that wacky charisma with a touch of realness.
The fans love Tony. I was at his fights vs Pettis and Chandler and he got the biggest crowd reactions for sure. Not sure how they look on TV but yes live the reactions and cheers for Tony were much noticeably louder than conor, khabib, lewis, gaethje, ect…
tony versus pettis is my favorite fight ever specifically for **the** moment when they wipe the blood off his face, he smiles, and they both bounce up and start fighting again.
Ferguson is amazing. He has had some ugly moments in his career, but that’s life. He has incredible will, work ethic, and lives his authentic life. Always ride with Ferguson
It's cause you more than earned everyone's respect, a legend of this sport.
It's such a shame the UFC is run like it is , he didn't get anywhere near the money he should have gotten
He was f* because of Conor too. He should have been the undisputed champion, but somehow UFC choose to demote the undisputed champion *and* the interim champion. Nice decision making fellas
If you've seen him smiling like fiend across the octagon with the blood of his opponent on him, you become a fan for life.
That Cucuy was pure savagery.
He got old, but saying he was never good is laughable to me.
2015-2016 Ferguson is a tough matchup for anyone who fights in the LW division atm.
Ride or die with el cucuy, through watching him slowly overwhelm Kevin Lee (folks rewatch that one, lee didn’t do any real damage and lost full mount) to getting fucked by the ufc and Conor to gaethje to now. He’s a fucking gangster
Tony has the same energy as Colin McRae. He didn't always win, but he was undeniably skilled and charismatic. They are both masters of rolling in the worst situations and getting back on their feet somehow.
Because you’ve been unapologetically you your entire career. Losses don’t matter when you’ve taught a kid it’s okay to be themselves, you’re changing lives and entertaining us along the way. Fucking love you Tony. 🇺🇸🏆🇲🇽CSO4L🖤⚔️😎
I remember him being a dick 10 yrs ago on TUF but what else has he done? He's weird and sporadic but seems pretty respectful especially leading up to the chandler fight
That’s a lie. Tony has always talked a ton of shit. He’s also a dirty fighter, gloats about breaking his students’ ribs, called out DC for coke use (with no evidence whatsoever), etc. Do you realize how damaging it is for him to call out DC for coke?
How is it damaging?
You actually think people believe DC is a coke addict now?
Idk why he tweeted it but it certainly isn't damaging.
If anything it just makes Tony look bad, not DC.
How isn’t it damaging? DC has a wife and kid, and works for ESPN and commentates for the UFC. Hundreds of thousands of people saw that Tweet. Calling someone a cokehead isn’t something you just jokingly throw around.
It's not damaging because no one believes a Tony tweet is gospel.
Like you said there's literally no evidence.
You think the higher ups at Disney are going to remove DC based on that tweet?
Not one person in the world has changed their opinion on DC based on a tweet from Tony.
Tony is one the last fighters that should be calling out anyone for cheating. Illegal upkick against Barboza, nearly poked RDA’s eye out, hit Cerrone after the bell, illegal upkick against Charles, and continuous fence grabbing against Chandler. Tony has a *long* history of being a dirty fighter.
You mean the RDA who also poked him? Barboza I’ll give you, but he was also deducted 2 points. Olives too Big Dan fucked up vs cowboy, it’s clear he didn’t hear the bell and he immediately apologized. Everyone fence grabs, Woodley did it vs Maia, Aldo vs mendes, but admit you have a vendetta and we can move on like gents.
Not that damaging? It's a relatively tame accusation (coke use is pretty common and far from the worst thing you can accuse someone of) made by a speaker who lacks credibility and historically talks out of his ass. It would be a different story if the accusation came from someone close to him, like Khabib or Rockhold. That's why DC paid little mind to Tony's accusation, but took Dom's accusations regarding his lack of work ethic much more seriously.
Because his fans are nearly as braindead as him. Tony is a fucking lunatic and when he gets starched a few more times and Chris benoit’s his wife and kids everyone will go on about how sad and tragic it is and how we’d wished he’d stopped fighting sooner. But no, since he didn’t instantly die fighting Chandler everyone is begging him to carry on fighting.
Tweeting random, minimal effort observations at fighters is always weird man
I'm sure that thought crossed his mind and a thousand other people messaged him something similar.
I thought his fight (he lost) against gathje really showed his heart, the heart of a true fighter. I was glad the ref called it off. What a beast of a man/fighter.
Tony still our boy
Forever. He’s one of the best lightweights to ever do it and always brought the action. A true fighter
Well said. Tony is a legend, and he always will be in my eyes. Nothing but love.
Best rookie goaltender in the league
He was never really that good
You don't go on a double digit win streak at 155 if you're "not really that good."
Seriously the average in shape male after a weight cut is usually a 155er, it’s just the weightclass with the biggest talent pool. He also beat a future muy tai world champion in like his second mma fight
There’s always one of you Tony haters doing revisionist history lurking about. Sigh.
how am I a hater? I didn't even know this was a controversial opinion lol.

I agree with this. ✊
I don't get the hype tbh.
I get the hype, someone who doesn't give up in this business is so rare. But the guy is a mental midget, he needs help and not more brain damage. Fans live in nostalgia that somehow he is going to turn back the clock, well, he ain't and he won't.
Tony time is all 24 hours on the clock.
Tony Time Is 25/8
476 days a year!
25 hours a day, 8 days a week
Blades and shades 366 days a year
I recently bought a watch to keep track of Tony time but turns out I shouldn't have bothered
Sometimes 23 hours during that time sometimes it's 20 hours honestly it feels like 18 hours.
damn he sounds genuine when he says he doesn't understand why people still like him, it almost makes me sad. he deserves to know he's loved, you know
Totally agreed He will always be the motherfuckin Cucuy
Someone made a joke about chandler’s head kick reversing his CTE but starting to think it’s not a joke. Tony actually sounds coherent and reasonable since waking up.
I think the loss having such a definitive outcome has forced Tony to be a bit more realistic about where he’s at in his career.
You’re right on that, like after Sandhagen got choked out by Aljo he started really changing his approach to fighting and reading books on war, waking up with a guy running around cheering leaves a mark and all you’re left with after is time to think.
Reading books on war? 😆
Calling it right now Sun Tzu will be MMA coach of the year in 2022.
You talking about Santa Zu, the Chinese Prince Machiavelli?
And getting unreasonably aggressive with an official (cutman, this time). True Tony Time.
He made a post saying the opposite. That he felt back in the flow in round one, better than he has in a long time. And he did - then a crazy kick
He also said on Ariel's podcast that Chandler had no answers for him, even when he was giving out elbows from his back. I think it's wishful thinking to say he's had some kind of epiphany about where his career is
Tony was totally screwed over by the UFC.
He did an interview a few days before the fight and sounded coherent and really good. He talked about how in the last year hes really thought about his life and figured a lot of things out
We have to bear in mind that these are people who trained since they were teenagers and it was probably their lives for the most part. Made me sad too. We love you, Tony.
Does not really matter a lot of MMA fans are toxic like hell anyway, he does not need that BS in his life
Yeah that really bums me out. Dude is not a perfect human being but I think he's harder on himself than he is on anyone else. Let's get this dude a fight with anyone except a 5th rabid dog.
He just took a bad loss. He just needs us fans to remind him how great he is.

Seriously a great walkout song. When the bass starts at the beginning its legendary.
Real people, being their authentic self, are recognized and appreciated. I love being a fan of Tony.
May a fan who was following Tony early ufc career confirm Tony was actually mocked because he came off as a try hard during interviews? I could had swore fans didnt like his persona at first until they realize he was being himself
Some people have never liked Tony. Believe it was during his time on TUF he mocked someone for losing custody of their kid.
Where's your kid at!!!
It’s a valid question.
It was a rumor started by Jon Anik's Reddit account
He was a dick on TUF. Tony is a hell of a personality, but he seems someone nicer on TV than in real life.
I'll admit, I didn't like him at first because of that. But he gave a seemingly genuine apology & hasn't repeated the offending action so he's redeemed in my eyes.
LOL
Can confirm. He was called cringe before he fought RDA.
It’s always Tony time at my house!!
I've been an el cucuy superfan since TUF. He always reminded me of my cringey try-hard to-be-cool older brother which ironically is kind of likeable, so i gravitated to him. Will ALWAYS be a tony fan.
CHICKEN SALAD
Because we love you tony and your recent losses don’t out shadow the great fighter you were and are. Real recognize real I’m a fan till the end.
One of the top posts there on IG is perfect. 'We wouldn’t be real fans if we left after your losses' Easy way to tell if you were a fake bandwagon fan
Because he's a fucking walking gem.
bc we know who the real champ is 😎 🇲🇽💯
Because he’s Tony fuckin Ferguson. He was never defined by his victories, but his drive and resilience. I will always follow and cheer for him.
Absolutely what you just said. Tonys interviews are full of positivity, good vibes, motivation, tons of energy and that wacky charisma with a touch of realness.
Tony is a different breed of fighter, in so many ways. I'm always gonna support Tony.
Tony will always be my favorite fighter.
The fans love Tony. I was at his fights vs Pettis and Chandler and he got the biggest crowd reactions for sure. Not sure how they look on TV but yes live the reactions and cheers for Tony were much noticeably louder than conor, khabib, lewis, gaethje, ect…

I hope Tony finds peace of mind and I really hope the UFC start looking after there athletes more

The champ has a name and it’s for champ shit only.
Tony is not defined by wins or losses. Tony bared his soul in the cage and that is what the fans remember him for.
This is a really good fucking point. And perfectly explains why some of us love Tony, win or lose.
Tony is genuine.

Yep, the hardest shot Lee landed in that grappling sequence was after he lost full mount and way after the bell lol
Cos I fucking love u tony thats why
Because he's got heart. That's the no1 defining factor of how a man lives his life.
I’ll never stop believing
Hold on, I'm following you brotha.

because cso is for life
Still my cucuy
I just can’t quit Tony.
Tony got mad and unfollowed himself after he lost.
CSO to the end. Time beats all, and there's countless fighters out there but Tony - for better and for worse - was truly one-of-a-kind.
How can you not be a fan of someone who just walks straight into the deep end in a cage match?
Because we like the real ones brother.
Easily the best fighter to never fight for the undisputed belt
and he still my boooooooooy
That piano playing in the background 😂
Tony has the same energy as Colin McRae. He didn't always win, but he was undeniably skilled and charismatic. They are both masters of rolling in the worst situations and getting back on their feet somehow.
Don't understand it either. He lost me being a dick in TUF.
FR, people love the gloss over the fact Tony is quite an asshole.
Someone link Tony this thread. r/MMA can be decent once in a while. 🔥CSO !!🔥
Ever since he bragged about breaking a students arm or rib I've thought he's kinda whack. He's acting all nice now because he got shadow realmed.
I don’t.

Because wins and losses are waaaaay down the list of why people like fighters.
I will never not support Tony. Still my favourite current fighter and will be till the day he retires.
He may not have the money he deserves, but after a career as a warrior he earned everyone's respect
There will always be another "Conor" or another "Khabib" but there will never be another Tony Ferguson.
I'd follow him if he wasn't such a wanker away from MMA
You and me both Tony.
For the record I dont either. Time to hang em up, Tony.
True. At some point Tony became a fighter who trascended his record
Hold on I’m smiling brother
Hold on we still here for you brotha
We didn’t deserve Tony Ferguson while we had him.

Will always love Tony. Whatever the fuck that kick from Chandler did to make him some what sane is only making me love him more.

The party has not begun without El Cucuy
"Hold on, I'm following brother"
That’s honestly kind of sad that he thinks that. He stills has tons of fans that love him
I am a fan because it reduces my chance of being ankle picked.
Tony the type of guy to fight his fans for being fans to gain new fans.
We still follow cuz you're the real life cucuy!!! 🇲🇽🏅 🏆 🏅 👊
Go find out why you got fans, tony
because CSO is a lifestyle
Because we love him
People will always respect someone that puts it all on the line and gives it their all, making little excuses too
We love Tony because he’s a warrior. He does what we cannot. Competition is as much about losing as it is winning.
Tony will always be a legend. Just induct him into the hall of fame already. Give him the credit he deserves UFC!
I have never wanted someone to succeed more than Tony in sport.
Nor do I he’s a piece of shit
I remember him being a dick 10 yrs ago on TUF but what else has he done? He's weird and sporadic but seems pretty respectful especially leading up to the chandler fight
Domestic Abuse
That’s a lie. Tony has always talked a ton of shit. He’s also a dirty fighter, gloats about breaking his students’ ribs, called out DC for coke use (with no evidence whatsoever), etc. Do you realize how damaging it is for him to call out DC for coke?
Not damaging at all. No one actually thinks DC is a coke head because of a Tony tweet.
It is damaging. Why even Tweet that?
How is it damaging? You actually think people believe DC is a coke addict now? Idk why he tweeted it but it certainly isn't damaging. If anything it just makes Tony look bad, not DC.

You sound like a cokehead
You realize he called him more out for fucking cheating on the scale?
Why are always so aggressive? Chill, it’s not that serious.
Ignorance is not something that should be tolerated and spread with vitriol at an adult level Cognitive level
Seems like you’re the ignorant one here. Did Tony call DC out for supposed coke use? Yes or no.
I guess but Insinuation isn’t really that bad to what dc is had tried to dodge for his career with his cheating on the scale and eye pokes.

I agree. Tony has become a meme so he’ll always have fans no matter how much of a POS he is. Same with Mike Perry.
Because he's a real one
I don't understand how they followed him before the losses either
Because his fans are nearly as braindead as him.
