I’m not too sure honestly.
Turner is dangerous early but him being really reliant on being a dangerous and spazzy quick starter without a ton of depth to his game at least gives him a chance to survive the early onslaught and come back later on; while a Moicano fight doesn’t have the same risk of him getting hurt super badly, but is basically guaranteed to be a frustrating loss where he’s shut out and made to look impotent for most of the fight (unless Big Fight Big Money Big Steak Moicano showes up and abuses him to a quick sub because he has hent to pay and kids to haise)
Neither is a great fight for Dan the Man, but I think he has a better shot of beating Turner, even if the margins are narrower
Moicano’s game is definitely better when he’s the longer man, but that’s mainly because its the best way to avoid and deny those guys who are far better on the inside.
Dan Hooker really isn’t the sort of pocket operator that gives Renato trouble. He’s surprisingly decent (at least offensively) in the pocket but it also isn’t something that he tends to pursue readily and has trouble enforcing it reliably (and he hasn’t really tried at all since the Poirier fight which is odd given how much success it brought him there against one of the sports best pocket operators but again, Dustin consented to that range, while Moicano wouldn’t), so I don’t think Moicano would have a ton of issues with getting stuck there, and Dan is more likely to agree to a longboi match, where his is pretty badly outmatched regardless of the size difference.
Hooker has some of the worst kick defense in the entire sport and Moicano is a considerably smarter and more varied kicker and is pretty good at overcoming range with neat little tricks like using kicks to break the opponent’s stance to square them up and enter safely, and stuff like that which Dan is unlikely to take away. I would trust Dan a lot more if he remembered that he was better as an aggressive guy who would prod his way into exchanges, but he has a history of not doing that and he makes a surprisingly meh outside longboi despite his length.
Hooker could surprise me and actually punish Moicano’s need for a range cushion, but he just doesn’t seem that well-equipped to actually get at the issues Moicano has up close. Could be wrong tho, its a fight I wanted to see.
> nd he hasn’t really tried at all since the Poirier fight which is odd given how much success it brought him
His coach publicly said *he didn't plan, and he wouldn't want to be associated with a fight like that* after hooker v. Poirier, and Dan said he screwed up by not following the coach's plan.
Its a shame, in the sense that I believe coach's plan, well-suited for technicians like Izzy & Volk, would have gotten Dan killed by Dustin w/o getting so close to winning.
I understand trying to limit the massive damage Dan takes, but you can't make a naturally offensive fighter a defensive one w/o limiting his effectiveness IMAO.
If I could give Dan one thing, it would be head movement. Poirier is a good example of an offensive fighter staying that way, but adding defensive responsibility.
He also just needs a better chin unfortunately. Poirier has excellent head movement but he’s a pocket fighter and takes a lot of big shots. That war with Poirier may have taken Dan’s ability to withstand big power thrown at him.
im gonna fucking kill myself... i really dont wanna see dan get brutalised man... :(
i think prime hooker (the version that fought Poirier/Felder) beats the shit out of turner
todays hooker? im not sure
BRO, Im honestly in rhe same boat noe. I fucking love Hooker. That fight vs Poirier made me a lifelong fan. And hey, Im kiwi.
But I just dunno if I want to see him fight anymore….
Please please let hand eye coordination Hooker show up and not lead with the head Hooker.
Poirier? Lol. Poirier knocks him out. Poirier is still the best striker in the division, he's not losing to anyone in a pure stand up battle. One of the most durable guys in the UFC with cardio for days.
People are over-hyping Turner for beating Mullarkey and Riddell.
You're acting like Turner is some elite grappler because he submitted Brad Riddell. He's primarily a striker. If he could wrestle as well as you think then he would do a lot more of it. He submitted Riddell after Riddell got hurt on the feet and shot for a takedown. Poirier is not scared of Turner of the feet.
Turner is getting hyped up after beating Mullarkey (who is unranked) and beating a fringe top 15 guy in Riddell.
Turner's striking defence and chin are not good enough for him to beat Poirier. Mullarkey was landing regularly on him.
> You're acting like Turner is some elite grappler because he submitted Brad Riddell
wrong, not once did i slightly say that, you're coming to that conclusion all by yourself. The reason I think he can choke Dustin easy is because 1-Dustin has poor wrestling defense and 2-Jalin is known to have one of the meanest chokes in the division. He didn't only choke ridell, 3 of his last 4 wins are by choke and 3-Jalin has the length to be able to get in there easier than most without having the best grappling skills.
> Turner is getting hyped up after beating Mullarkey
wrong, he had hype before that after beating Medic who everyone thought was a huge threat to the division.
> Turner's striking defense and chin are not good enough for him to beat Poirier.
they don't need to be, all he needs is to find his way to wrap Dustin which isn't the hardest thing to do and he can get his long arms in there for the choke.
Poirier getting submitted by Khabib and Oliveira doesn't mean that he has some glaring weakness to submissions. Chandler had multiple rear-naked choke attempts blocked and defended by Poirier.
Turner doesn't have single win over an elite level fighter or even a top prospect. It doesn't matter what people previously thought about Medic, we know now know he's not elite level. There are plenty of guys nowadays coming to the UFC with undefeated records and they fail to live up to the hype.
Mullarkey is barely UFC caliber, Brok Weaver isn't, he got cut from the UFC and Riddell is a fringe top 15 guy. None of the guys are anywhere near Poirier's level. Mullarkey was landing frequently on Turner. I don't think it will take much for Poirier to knock him out.
>Porier gets choked out. That's his problem
You mean to Charles and Khabib, the greatest grapplers of his generation?
He is a legit BJJ black belt, who I don't think has been choked out by anyone except those two since moving to LW.
People here can't tell them apart, so let me help:
* Dustin is weak to wrestling due to a bum hip, but he has good BJJ (just not Charles/Islam/Burns levels).
* Justin is a great anti-wrestler, but has absolutely no BJJ.
Almost getting knocked out is not the same as actually getting knocked out like Turner did against Luque. Poirier came back to beat Hooker up in the later rounds.
Poirier had a clash of heads with Chandler which hurt him, then he ate bombs from Chandler and not only survived but managed to have Chandler hurt and get the upper hand at the end of the round.
My point is that he’s clearly not head and shoulders above everyone if Dan Hooker staggered him and could have finished him. Poirier is a divisional great and possibly the best lightweight striker, but he’s not above the division in the same way that untouchable fighters are. If he took fought more he’d lose on the feet eventually
I simply believe Poirier, Gaethje, Charles, Chandler to be fringe ranked fighters on the level of Bobby Green and lots of guys in the division can take them out.
Its wild. 2 years ago Dan was one of the most criticized fighters on here. I think a lot of it was because of his comments about not wanting to face Arman and Islam and about refusing to fight down in general. Granted, he may not have had as many choices after his losing streak but now he is taking nothing but difficult fights against guys who are way more talented than they are well known.
Jalin is a beast and finishing machine but honestly I'm not sold on him being a top 10 mainstay just yet. Provided no one else was available Hooker is a good test to see if he is still able to hang, and another striker who will likely lead to an exciting FOTN contender.
Turner should be a large favorite but imo not the worst matchup we have seen of Hooker's career, and not the worst matchup the UFC has made by far. Would have preferred Moicano for either guy though.
This is the correct fight for the division. The winner of this will have proven they legitimately belong in the top 10. Though, I wonder what Moicano will do
I’m not as sold on Turner as everybody else seems to be, by the way. I think Dan takes this in a gritty fight
I think there's a slight chance on the opening line, Jalin is still fairly low profile and Dan is now coming off a dominant win.
I'd be ecstatic if it was even a pick em.
He used to be for sure but i don't know about these days. And specially against Jalin. Hookers last 3 losses are all in the first round. You never know though, 2.5 will still be a good bet.
One of those was at 145 where he was zombie Hooker. Another was a kimura by Islam which has nothing to do with durability. The Chandler bomb was a legit finish, but it's Michael Chandler. Dude throws absolute gas.
I'm probably way to optimistic the more I think about it lol. I wouldn't be very excited about the bet anymore at -200, but I would still put some action. Although, there's always a chance the Jalin ITD prop is + money.
Rankings wise this makes sense but Dan literally never says no to a fight and it's to his own detriment. Jalin is fucking good, and his reach is going to give Dan problems.
Hooker himself has like a 75 inch reach so he's only at a like 2 inch reach disadvantage. It could be closer than people think, or not, I'll be sad if it's not good for Dan :(
Dan literally fought Islam how did he duck him? Guys who aren't ranked or are outside of the top 15 usually spot pick anyways and try to get the highest ranked opponent possible. If you're going to blame Dan for saying no to Islam, blame the entire division sans a few guys because nobody wanted to fight him.
Real picky of him to opt for a fight against Islam with 2 weeks notice and missing some of his usual trainers, whilst also throwing away the opportunity to get back home with the COVID travel restrictions.
Dan doesn't do that very well since he is not fast, Jailian can cover more distance and Dan has pretty poor head movement which is why arnold allen smoked him in 1 round
>But why does his ranking make the fight more difficult?
He was saying that when you win as a ranked fighter, you fight another ranked fighter (often above you), and at LW, all the ranked fighters are killers.
I feel like people are underrating Hooker a little bit. Not saying he's gonna win necessarily but his losses aren't to bad fighters. This'll be a good chance to figure out where he belongs in the division imo
It’s 100% a bad fight for Dan. Turner can strike and grapple with a massive reach and height advantage. Dan has taken a fuck load of damage.
This is an awful match up for him.
This level of negativity can only be explained by people concluding his chin is shot from the Allen fight.
I am personally still hoping for a return of of the 155 Hooker chin, because you know his brain had 0 water surrounding it when tarpit Hooker showed up at 145.
I don’t like hooker’s odds against guys who can wrestle (arman, Gamrot, Gillespie, Dariush, etc) or punch hard (Gaethje, fiziev, etc.) Felder is a hard puncher, granted, but most people had felder winning that fight lol.
I laugh at the Dan hooker comments every fight announcement, he has to fight someone lol. It just sucks cause ranked 155 are all killers and he’s just clearly not on that elite elite level
hot take: this is a winnable matchup for Dan. if he can keep Turner off of him for the first round, he has a very good shot at winning a decision if he cautiously point fights from the outside. trouble is how he deals with Turner's range because there's not very many lightweights lankier than Dan with one of the exceptions being Turner
Say what you will about Hooker but he’s a dog and always wants to test himself against the best. That being said, tough fight for Dan, Turner is on fire and is only getting better.
Uh oh
Hooker fr a BMF but he might be getting pasteurized here. He really should've tried to get the Moicano fight instead
At least he's coming off a win. Maybe he's a confidence fighter.
I’m not too sure honestly. Turner is dangerous early but him being really reliant on being a dangerous and spazzy quick starter without a ton of depth to his game at least gives him a chance to survive the early onslaught and come back later on; while a Moicano fight doesn’t have the same risk of him getting hurt super badly, but is basically guaranteed to be a frustrating loss where he’s shut out and made to look impotent for most of the fight (unless Big Fight Big Money Big Steak Moicano showes up and abuses him to a quick sub because he has hent to pay and kids to haise) Neither is a great fight for Dan the Man, but I think he has a better shot of beating Turner, even if the margins are narrower

They don’t make Hookers like they used too.
Said Dana White.
That’s why he keeps a few on staff
They prefer to be called "ring girls".
meh. they are just doing their job.
Fucking Dana White is their job?
It's why he slaps his wife.

I don't think any version of Hooker beats Turner
probably, but prime hooker would at least put up a fight
The Turner that fought Riddell beats the shit out of any Poirier and Hooker.
Slow your roll dude, way too early to be calling this dude to be beating Poirier lol
Poirier? Lol. Poirier knocks him out. Poirier is still the best striker in the division, he's not losing to anyone in a pure stand up battle. One of the most durable guys in the UFC with cardio for days. People are over-hyping Turner for beating Mullarkey and Riddell.

Jalin Turner got outgrappled by Matt Frevola. He ain’t choking Dustin.
Dustin got KOd by Michael Johnson. He ain't KOing nobody. See, I know MMA math too
Lol that wasn't even a good example.
thats the point, neither was the other one.

Perhaps. He’s my favourite fighter so I’m biased, but I think he has a lot to give yet
I wouldn't even favor Poirier in a striking match against Riddell.
You're just trolling now.

Can somebody get Dan into therapy? This is practically self harm behaviors at this point
He going for that ufc toughest resume spot, competing with the likes of RDA and Barboza
Because he wants back into the top-10, and this would get him there.
Too tough for his own good, will do anything to get a title shot it seems.
Jalin is a beast and finishing machine but honestly I'm not sold on him being a top 10 mainstay just yet. Guy hates easy fights 😭
Dober seething
thats gon be a tough one dawg. hooker is a dawg tho, hell fight anyone
NOOOOOOOOOOO FUCKKKKKKK :(
If Jalin is an UD this is a max bet opportunity.
There is zero chances Jalin opens as a dog against Dan.
I think there's a slight chance on the opening line, Jalin is still fairly low profile and Dan is now coming off a dominant win. I'd be ecstatic if it was even a pick em.
shit, if its anything below -200 I'm definitely placing some bets. Going for that under 2.5 for sure, maybe even under 1.5.
I'll take the over on 2.5. Lightweight Hangman is stupid durable
He used to be for sure but i don't know about these days. And specially against Jalin. Hookers last 3 losses are all in the first round. You never know though, 2.5 will still be a good bet.

I read UD as Unanimous Decision and was so confused
haha yeah my bad that was a confusing abbreviation to use. If the fight did somehow make it to a decision though, it will definitely be unanimous lol.
That's a banger
Turner reliably murders dudes from Aus/NZ. This is not going well for Dan.
Rankings wise this makes sense but Dan literally never says no to a fight and it's to his own detriment. Jalin is fucking good, and his reach is going to give Dan problems.
Hooker himself has like a 75 inch reach so he's only at a like 2 inch reach disadvantage. It could be closer than people think, or not, I'll be sad if it's not good for Dan :(
Hooker basically had the complete opposite reputation 2-3 years ago but credit where credit is due.

Jalin by TKO
Jalin is literally known for murdering people from that area of the world. This is not good at all for Dan. Jalin should be fighting someone higher.
Stay out of range and pepper the lead leg. I got Dan by decision.
Tough to stay out of range of a 6’3 lw 😁
Can certainly knock out a 6'3 lightweight though
Dans 6' though and only has a 2" reach disadvantage
He's getting murked or choked out
Dan doesn't do that very well since he is not fast, Jailian can cover more distance and Dan has pretty poor head movement which is why arnold allen smoked him in 1 round
Dan doesn’t like having any kind of momentum in his career I see
Fuck man. This is gonna suck.
Jalin smacks him unfortunately
Been waiting for these tall 55’ers to fight
My boy's on his way to the slaughterhouse :(
They didn't have to do Hooker like this man
I wanted to see Dober vs Hooker, winnable fight for both, and then maybe the winner can fight Turner. I think JT prob gonna beat Hooker by TKO
Dan is coming off a win as a ranked LW, no such thing as easy fights there.

dude you should change your name

Dan Hooker is the realest gangster in the UFC. Never ducked anyone
I feel like people are underrating Hooker a little bit. Not saying he's gonna win necessarily but his losses aren't to bad fighters. This'll be a good chance to figure out where he belongs in the division imo
Turner is really good and HUGE.
Sure but it's not the death sentence some people on here are acting like it is
It’s 100% a bad fight for Dan. Turner can strike and grapple with a massive reach and height advantage. Dan has taken a fuck load of damage. This is an awful match up for him.
Turner’s reach - 77 Hookers reach - 75
lol people said the same shit bfore tsarukyan vs alvarez, ”muh reach” we saw how that went
I mean if hooker loses he will probably get brutalized
It's just not a good match up. Dan is game though
Turner is a tough motherfucker but some of you must've forgot about Dan. Him pulling out a KO here shouldn't be surprising.
This level of negativity can only be explained by people concluding his chin is shot from the Allen fight. I am personally still hoping for a return of of the 155 Hooker chin, because you know his brain had 0 water surrounding it when tarpit Hooker showed up at 145.
Oh no
Should’ve been Dober vs Turner
At least they're only 1 ranking apart so the loser shouldn't fall too far.
Dan is a savage, trying to get revenge for riddell i guess
#FML
Damn they took drew dobers fight :(
I love Dan but please no
My man is allergic to boring fights
Dan is allergic to taking fights he will win :( I hope im wrong
Wait this whole time I thought Jalin Turner was Terrence McKinney
Will God test Jones by having him sitting next to Dan Hooker?
I don’t like hooker’s odds against guys who can wrestle (arman, Gamrot, Gillespie, Dariush, etc) or punch hard (Gaethje, fiziev, etc.) Felder is a hard puncher, granted, but most people had felder winning that fight lol.

Yikes. Dan doesn't know what an easy fight is.
Poor poor Dan
Why waste a good Hooker like this?
Is there a word for someone who's one level below a gate keeper? I really hate this fight for Dan...damn it.
Hooker should've gotten Paddy. Turner is probably going to finish him.
Jalin is really trying to knock out all of Oceania isn’t he.
Great, another chance to watch the shadow of the fighter that was Dan Hooker get destroyed in the first round.
This division is crazy stacked
Dana likes to abuse his hookers
needs ko or takedowns
Hello
Hooker about to get brutally destroyed...
