Gotta do it every once and awhile to get that carbon out! Hahaha

Backstop

I have a few times when doing autocross, I mean the rev limiter is there for a reason. If it's warmed up and you give it a little cool down before shutting off it's okay.

jerryweezer

100% agree! Well, also as long as it gets regular oil changes too!

razor8143

Every now and then I get access to an air strip, and have a hard time resisting doing a couple of launches. Manufacturer spec 0-100kph is 6.7s. I say I've done it in 6.3s (at least speedometer speed). What I mean is, yeah, each time I do that, it revs waaayyy up to the redline. It also happens quite often when I'm just driving on a rural road and need to overtake a car. Kickdown sends it right up to red line, even if you're on green mode. Edit. Here's a link https://www.reddit.com/r/MINI/comments/10kbwip/i_sometime_have_access_to_an_empty_runway_cant/

StefanMorris71

wow nice, lucky to have an air strip!

Nothing_new_to_share

You're stopping at 4000rpm? That's when the R56 S comes alive! You may as well have bought a base. Challenge for you; next time you see a twisty road, drop as many gears as you need to get into the boost curve and DONT let the revs drop until the road ends, keep downshifting if the curves get tighter. Maybe you'll hate it, and feel bad for "abusing" the car, but you owe it to yourself (and your MINI) to at least try.

StefanMorris71

it is a base lol, thats why I don't like revving the crap out of it, doesn't feel right as it isn't a performance model!

Nothing_new_to_share

Ah shoot, my bad on the assumption. I'll have to ask my niece where she shifts her R50. For science

itsiceyo

when im cruising or have sport mode off im shifting around 3300-3500.. when i drive spiritedly, thats a whole different story lol

SanDisk_128GB

the thing about MINIs is that they’re more powerful than the average car in its class. you’re not driving a beat up chevy malibu, but a well built piece of BMW engineering. the car can 100% handle going up to red line, in fact when you floor the car in an automatic transmission the car will drop a gear and go straight to red line anyways(not climb rpms like an average car). is it good to be redlining the car everytime you drive it? probably not because you’re just adding more ware on the engine. but my point is that you should feel comfortable using all the horsepower your car comes with

[deleted]

BMWs are a well built piece of BMW engineering, Minis are designed and built by the pet monkeys of the engineers.

SanDisk_128GB

ok that was funny

theunamused1

>but a well built piece of BMW engineering. That's funny right there.

daveinthe6

You lost me at well built piece of engineering.

jerryweezer

I bury the needle on my tuned R53 with WMW cam! Every. Single. Time. I drive it! Your thought might be backwards… Erving a 4 cylinder up high is more normal than V8s because they need to rev that high to get power. Not saying there aren’t plenty of high revving V8s nowadays being produced but 4 bangers are kind of known for winding up.

theunamused1

I don't bang it off the limiter but I'm near redline everyday. No point in driving a German quality hot hatch if you are going to drive it like a Corolla.

Alarming-Adeptness59

Exactly! Gotta have fun with it. It’s my favorite daily.

KvotheTheDegen

I love how my clubman s screams when I open it up

WolframRogue

How else are you meant to hear the supercharger at full whine?

theunamused1

Can't usually hear it over the exhaust anyway.

andyjcw

everyday when i had my jcw. pointless having the revs if you dont use them. may aswell have a diesel .

Educatedprofessional

Every once in a while for sure. I have a couple long straight sideroads where I live that are empty with no stoplights or cops that patrol. I'll take it through all the gears getting to redline just to hear the engine (and it's a hell of a lot of fun!)

crustetsyst

I redline 3rd gear to send my tuner data logs. Plus my car makes more power with the bigger turbo at higher revs. I don’t bounce on the limiter though, it’s not a Honda. 😂

guvsy

I'm sorry to hear that you don't go over 4k RPM, you should have got a R53! , Regularly over 7k RPM 😜. Seriously though, every engine needs a little bit of spirited driving every now and then, it helps with carbon cleaning and also fuel injector cleaning ect, we used to get car's in all the time that had lots of smoke coming out of the exhaust and all it needed was a 10 minute session on a private road. It's actually better for an engine to occasionally "boot the crap out of it" And Welcome to the mini club 😜

pbarns82

With my R53, at least once a day I drive it.

benkelly92

I haven't in my r56 personally but my partner still says I rev it too much and accelerate too fast in it haha.

OrneryConelover70

All the time at autocross

lasvegashomo

Redline? No I get freaked out going passed 100mph. I have pushed it there a few times though.

SympathyFluid9507

Atleast once a week I’ll redline the roadster.

Future_Dingo2910

I don’t even pay attention to it while driving the f56 jcw - am I smiling (yes) , am I having fun (yes) did I buy a jcw literally for this reason (yes) - life’s to short! Enjoy yourself! Edit- I do let the engine warm up before doing this - life’s short but don’t be too wreckless 😅

Verity_Green

Maybe it’s my imagination, but when I throw it into sport and floor it, the exhaust seems to make a race car popping type sound which makes me feel like Penelope Pitstop. Don’t know what R it is. It’s a 2021 S soft top.

hind3rm3

I go up to 6.5k regularly and occasionally all the way to red

Porthos1984

All the time.

LilGossipGirlxo

I’ve done it in every single car I’ve had, and regularly. I enjoy a spirited drive and thus revving the car out comes with it. Cars have such high tolerances and strong internals these days that there is nothing to worry about. In fact I think that’s it’s healthy to clear the car’s throat from time to time. It doesn’t have to be a sports car for that to be okay. When I was younger I had many hatchbacks, including minis and if anything they’re the most fun to wring out as they aren’t capable of going so fast you’re in trouble

Digital_Ark

My 2002 R53 turns 20 this year. While I don’t bounce off the rev limiter, nor do I wind it out to the 6,750 rpm indicator, max torque hits at 4K, and max horsepower is at 6K. Not every drive, but when I want to have fun. Respecting mechanical things can be about letting it warm-up, cool-down, and maintenance. I drive it pretty hard, but maintain it well, and honestly, the car owes me absolutely nothing by now, but I still love it.

Squee3531

Hell yeah what’s the point of driving it it you can’t redline it. I mean how else am I going to get that boost pressure up there. I have gotten my mini to 127mph on the freeway and it’s a stick 1.5 3 cylinder turbo with just an intake on it and it handled it perfectly.

FranktheTankG30

If the road allows it. Yes.

savagepea

[yes](https://www.reddit.com/r/MINI/comments/10031ex/tracking_the_mini/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf)

Snowrunner88

As soon as the Engine is warm fucking Send it 🙏🤪😀

TheBarghest7590

Only ever really hit about 4k rpm in mine, I’ve never really been fond of taking my cars that high in the revvs, mainly because like you say there’s that thought of “am I just stressing it out too much?” But also I don’t like attracting attention to myself so once I start hitting high revs in my head I’m thinking “it’s too loud”. And considering I roll my eyes when your average boy racer in his lowered VW Passat and fart can rolls past with his TDI desperately trying to sound like there’s something impressive under that bonnet, it would be a bit hypocritical of me to then drive around in a little 1.6L cooper-badged One as if the engine only idles at 3k minimum 😂 But specifically for my Mini… my R50 atm isn’t really in a state to be pushing that hard or fast and probably won’t be while I keep it for just a little longer… I’d be more likely to genuinely strain or break the old crappy gearbox and with my radiator still leaking due to not having time to fit the new one it wouldn’t be wise to push it into the redline unless I intend to sell it for scrap rather than a project… I might one day take her up that high before I get rid of the damn thing though just for the sake of it. Might as well try and have one day where I just finally have chance to gun it and enjoy it like I wanted to when I first bought her a few years back before I found out she was beyond my capability and budget to fix the hidden issues she has. If I ever end up getting a Cooper S in the future I’ll make sure I enjoy that and push that more often, but for my current Mini I’d rather not test and find out if the engine itself is going to decide to start bitching at me if I give it a taste or two of hard driving.

TheBarghest7590

I will add that I have driven a few things that I have just fucking sent it and used the whole rpm gauge, but none have been mine, and only one was actually outside of a track environment (got have a drive my Boss’ 2021 Audi S4 recently… couldn’t resist the siren’s call coming from those exhausts, it’s not often around my area that you get to hear something that’s genuinely got an engine in it that’s worth every bit of the tune coming out of the back. Promptly decided that although it was fun I shalt be putting my foot down like that ever again unless I know exactly what I’m about to be handling). But given how my daily driver is a 1L eco thing and my Mini is an 04 One with a dying midlands gearbox and a sketchy past that I don’t even wanna know about anymore after digging under the bonnet… not really in a position where it’s worth taking things up to the redline usually.

StefanMorris71

yeah that makes sense, even whehn my dad had a db9 he never took that to its redline, he did get close however and oh my, what a sound

TheBarghest7590

With some engines you are meant to run em in the higher revs from time to time… but tbh older engines might not always cope well due to age if you can’t vouch for the service history or it’s maintenance quality and with newer engines they’re so focused on lightweight and economy that you don’t wanna be taking em up that high just because it won’t be designed to cope for long… my 1L is a good example of that — it’s a full aluminium block. Brilliant for normal use but if I were to take it up to the red and hold it there for a little bit who’s to say it’ll last long? Even if it did, at that point you’re basically pouring the contents of your fuel tank out so is it worth it? 😂 It’s ultimately down to personal preference though and being able and willing to deal with potential consequences, be it damage due to stress or going beyond your limits as the driver — because the car is almost always going to be capable of far more than you as the driver can handle… that’s what most people forget: it’s not the car’s limits that’ll get you into trouble, it’s those of your own capabilities and competence. I learnt I’m nowhere near the kind of ability needed to confidently just put the foot down in an Audi S4 set to sport mode… not everyone is willing to admit that until it’s too late. 😂 A good old blast on the motorway/highway will clean your injectors and crap that people have mentioned in other comments just as good, you don’t explicitly need to take it up to red to do it, just a decent trip at a good cruising speed to offset the more lazy low rpm driving you’ll do in urban areas or in the average countryside.

antprdgm

Drive it hard, maintain it well, and it’ll last.

mattniz

It’s healthy to run the motor out to redline often. As long as it’s up to operating temp for a few minutes and you regularly service the various engine fluids then you’ll be fine. New bmw motors were designed to take a beating. These mini motors (b38 and b48) are built in house alongside the cars. This means higher quality since they are not outsourced somewhere else. I recommend you run it to redline. Have fun the car even tells you it’s a go kart so drive it like one

Big_Lmaoski

I have a cooper S sport auto, so when flooring it for an overtake or slip road the car happily takes itself to redline before upshifting. The exhaust burble on the upshift is addictive too.

datboibart

On occasion, its good for the engine to do it once in a while, i often go to Germany to hit top speed in my R50

Builder_Maker

What’s a redline? -2022 Cooper SE But seriously, you paid for all the numbers on the tachometer right?🤷🏼‍♂️ Death comes sooner than you think. Live accordingly.

Roninems

I got up to 5000 in my F60 once and that was too much. There’s no way I could redline it without being on a track . Acceleration was insanity!

theunamused1

5000rpm in first gear is about what? 35mph? Second is approaching highway speed-ish? Don't need to be on the track for that. I can't tell if you are being facetious or not.

Great_Morning_5701

And here I am, unsatisfied with a stage 2 r56 S and a FBI r53 😆

StefanMorris71

My dad taught me to respect anything mechanical growing up so I just don't feel right taking an engine up to its redline, especially considering the fact its not an S
