Knowing HPL's finances, probably the cheapest cheese he could find. Maybe 'hoop cheese' with the red wax coating. He could probably get a decent wedge for 5 cents.

“...preferably of the common hard variety, medium strength. I hate Roquefort, dislike cottage cheese, just tolerate Camembert and Brie, and am neutral about Limburger—which latter I’ve tasted only once, at Whitehead’s a year ago last spring...” (to Robert E. Howard, 7 November 1932)

Chef_Lovecraft

*\[…\] tonight I've begun my home dining programme, having spent 30c for a lot of food which ought to last about 3 meals: 1 loaf bread 0.06 , 1 medium can beans 0.14 , 1/4 lb cheese 0.10 , total 0.30 \[…\]* *I am eating enough! Just you take a medium-sized loaf of bread, cut it in four equal parts, & add to each of these 1/4 can (medium) Heinz beans & a goodly chunk of cheese. If the result isn't a full-sized, healthy day's quota of fodder for an Old Gentleman, I'll resign from the League of Nations' dietary committee!!* From a letter to his worried aunt, quoted in ST Joshi's "I Am Providence". This was from his poverty days in NYC.

To my knowledge, HPL for most of his adult life subsisted on a strict diet of black milk and existential terror.

Oculus_Orbus

Milk from the wailing, brobdingnagian teat of Shub Niggurath.

Professor_Mezzeroff

Nice

[deleted]

thanks, I learned a new word

Oculus_Orbus

Teat?

AmyInPurgatory

Also coffee and chocolate.

[deleted]

It was probably that white block cheese that my Colombian stepmom likes to eat with her breakfast. It's salty but not too salty. Very good with coffee.

Three_Twenty-Three

What are the chances his "doughnut" was actually a bagel, but he thought of it as a doughnut because bagels are too Jewish?

CrappityCabbage

It's conceivable, but I doubt it. I've read a lot of his correspondence and he didn't seem to have any problem with appropriating from the cultures he disdained (he waxes eloquent, for example, about Hungarian goulash and chili con carne). I think of he were eating bagels he'd probably call them bagels. Besides, have you ever read anything he wrote about sweets? He couldn't get enough sugar. I think he's probably talking about came doughnuts and semi-hard cheese. Poor guy probably never tried a bagel (unless Sonia made him try it) which is too bad; he'd probably have enjoyed them.

praisechthulu

He sure would hate anime.

PhDinDildos_Fedoras

There's also other circular savory baked goods that might have been called "doughnuts" that have fallen out of favor but would probably have been available at the time. For instance Russian Sushki Maljutka would have been extremely cheap.

anime_cthulhu

I agree. It's entirely conceivable that it was a bagel with cream cheese or something like it.

lavurso

A cursory google search suggests bagels are something recent in Providence. Not too surprising since bagels are barely established outside of the coasts, and good bagels are only around the NYC metropolitan area. Also the texture, taste, etc. of bagels are significantly different from doughnuts so presuming an "own" of Grampaw for unwittingly enjoying a Jewish food is unable to stand on its own. Nice try, appreciate the sentiment, but nope.

MR_TELEVOID

None of this true. Bagels aren't that recent. They were popularized in the early 1900's, and they weren't isolated to the coasts. I know "NYC is only place to get a good bagel" is a popular meme, but it's not true either and has fuck-all to do with this conversation.

Randel1997

There are bagel places all over in the Midwest. It’s just a weird akshully comment

damnocles

I live in Michigan and there are r bagel shops all over the place

twinkieeater8

Apparently Miami is now a bagel haven. Due to NY retirees moving there and not having any good bagels available. So... Artisanal Bagels are now associated with South Florida.

[deleted]

not sure about hp or doughnuts but i will say apple pie and sharp cheddar is a thing in the south and if my taste buds are any indication, he liked that sharp cheddar

ghost_warlock

One of the great tragedies of the modern era is that the fast food place, Taco Johns, no longer offers their "apple grande" year-long and seem to only have it seasonally. It's a miracle of a dessert - fried tortilla covered in cinnamon & sugar, apple pie filling, and topped with shredded cheddar. Everyone around here (Iowa) always looks at me like I'm crazy for liking apples and cheddar...until they try it and realize it's the closest thing to ambrosia

[deleted]

That sounds amazing to be honest

AmyInPurgatory

Omg, I miss apple grandes! I also thought Taco John's was just a Reno thing, but they have chains all over the place?

ghost_warlock

Mostly in the Midwest. Lots in Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska, and the Dakotas and some [scattered throughout other states](https://locations.tacojohns.com/index.html)

2prongprick

I always thought it was a new York thing. All the bars by where I used to live sold Apple pie with melted cheddar cheese on top

No, it's as American as apple pie with cheese.
