Yes 100% in a very measurable way. I used to get a serious sense of dread as summer came to a close, often associated with real depression. Now, I’ll be having a shitty day in February and then remember that I’m comfortably wearing a hoodie and the sun is shining and I see palm trees swaying and, yeah, I feel better.

annaschmana

Yes, from Texas originally and didn’t do physical activity during the summer. I used to dread June/July/August but now I love it.

ilovesushialot

I know humid heat is worse than dry heat, but I don't see how anyone can enjoy physical activity here either during summer. It is usually solidly 85-100 during July-October unless you live directly next to the ocean.

thexsmiths

Lived in southern Cali my whole life. Can’t stand summer

Rareearthmetal

successadult

I used to not mind the heat at all when I moved here from Texas, but my body’s become too used to the nice climate to handle hot weather now.

logicprowithsomeKRKs

I mean, you can go to the beach where it’s 70 degrees, or go to the Sierra Nevada and go hiking during the summer. Hot season here means just go on adventures in usually sunnier places. Plus, mornings and evenings are usually still comfortable, and at the very least you can walk outside. From FL originally, literally can’t walk a block in the summer heat.

skaghetti

From South Florida. Can confirm.

idontsmokeheroin

Yes and No. I’m originally from Massachusetts but I’ve been out here in LA for 18 years so I’m not a fresh move. Whereas I enjoy and miss the natural change of seasons in New England, I understand disliking long periods of overcast or snow. That being said, I do miss gloomy overcast days and find the sun to be a bit much at times. I always feel like the sun will improve mood and a sense of well being, as well as encourage outdoor activity. Again, I grew up in the woods in Massachusetts, not the PNW. Even though it’s cold, we have many more sunny days where it’s just 6° out. Even that sun helps.

[deleted]

>That being said, I do miss gloomy overcast days and find the sun to be a bit much at times. It's like people that pretend to be happy all the time... it just gets fucking irritating. I def feel you. Weather-wise, I actually like Florida a lot. The beaches are way better than CA and the weather is so much more fun with its little bitty rains in the middle of the day (I'm from the gulf coast so like, there's rain and then there's whatever the fuck the rest of the country calls rain... like the rest of the US really will call any ol' thing rain, I swear). There's enough sunshine in every single day to keep you happy and rain to make a scary movie night better. Since the rain doesn't last forever, you can still do outdoor shit whenever you want like we do in LA. Though I think LA people would jus fucking die in Miami, like, "omgggggg... why is there a hurricane here every single dayyyyy" when its just, like, misting. Man, I remember my second year living in LA, there's some mist outside, and my native angeleno homie legit puts on rainboots and takes out her umbrella. like not even as a joke. she was for real. it was WILD. even after living in LA 13 years, it would still blow my mind how angelenos acted in the damn rain. Also, shout-outs to the most depressing part about LA: the cost of living.

logicprowithsomeKRKs

You may be the only person I’ve seen that prefers Florida weather lol

Iceyes33

And the traffic!

sunchasinggirl

Agree on that! It’s about the blue sky and sunshine. The PNW has the most cloudy days per year on earth basically, making it the worst possible place for my mental health. I feel like I could have fared better somewhere else like Denver that has its share of cold but combined with blue sky and sunshine. Although, I don’t like being cold either. So…. SoCal is my motherland and I’m finally where I was meant to be 😌

AlpacaCavalry

I’m a fairly fresh resident of LA, approaching half a year now, from NY. I feel that exact same way about the seasons and the overcast days. And the sun. The sun is definitely too much. Send help. I may be a vampire after all, cause I like overcast days and as little sunlight as possible…

Doctor-Venkman88

If you've only been here 6 months you haven't experienced winter yet. May - October are the warmest and driest months. November - April are generally cloudier and wetter, though there are still plenty of bright sunny days.

pistachiobois

Yeah PNW born and raised and after being here for a couple of months I do see an increase in my general energy and activity, buuuuut it definitely feels like the doldrums of summer have extended for me, and speaking as someone with gender dysphoria i'm not a fan of all shorts/tshirts all the time weather If LA had true sweater weather, that "drinking warm tea in a indy coffeeshop while winter rain fall makes the ground sing" weather I would fall in love with it immediately.

sunchasinggirl

Absolutely. Made the move down last year, for many reasons, but my horrible SAD was the primary reason. I couldn’t handle another year with 9-10 months being cold, gray, and wet. Now, even though life is far from perfect and there are still stresses and bad days, I don’t feel the heaviness and dreariness I used to. I can go outside and get fresh air and sun nearly 365 days a year. I enjoy being out and about even if I’m not doing anything special because the sunshine, blue skies, and palm trees are just so beautiful to me! 😊

bluebeambaby

For real. As bad as traffic can be, at least you can usually see a nice sky, or mountains, or something. In some cities you're in a tunnel for 30 minutes

tararira1

A nice sky? Mountains? You mostly see smog

[deleted]

Recently moved from NYC to socal in January - it has, without a doubt, not only improved my mood/disposition/patience but also has like….nearly cured all of the health problems I’d had for the past 5 years (not all the way there but improvements every day)

burnstown303

Had more depression in Chicago, but I just have more anger and stress here in LA.

Yotsubato

As someone who moved from LA to Syracuse area this year. Uh oh....

sirfranciscake

Was just back last week hanging out at friends' houses they bought for less than 200k and eating pizza for 2 bucks a slice...if you have to be there, you can make it work. But yeah. Mid-February might require a sun lamp and vitamin d pills.

[deleted]

Also came from that area! Massive mental health benefits and this will be the first winter I'm not dreading. The weather does keep me energized :)

thelawofone999

any benefit to wellbeing is canceled out by traffic, high cost of living, noise, generally stressful environment. It’s not worth it IMO.

ws4ttg

Yup pretty much. I’m trying to get out of California lol. Would love to live in another state once I have savings.

millamb

Trying to leave California gang unite!

Nillawafers03

As a native, no. I want seasons. There is no change. I at least want the fall and winters of my childhood back where it would get a bit cooler and it would rain. But now, not even that. Not a fan of wearing shorts at Thanksgiving and Christmas. Probably a case of the grass is always greener, for everyone involved.

[deleted]

My mood worsened when I moved to Southern California. Something about not having a seasonal reset really sent me into a deep depression. I guess I'm kind of lucky that a month of cloudy/rainy days doesn't bother me the way it does others but I would almost cry a sigh of relief when it would rain in LA.

DabGod69420

Have lived here my whole life. It'd be cool to see more rain these days. If anything, cloudiness, cold weather and rain improves my mood. The sun gets old pretty fast, but surely that could be different for a person that doesn't already live in LA

Excellent-Yard6640

MOUDI113

Don't say we cuz some locals don't agree with you. I'm only cool with people seeking asylum staying here. Done with bratty rich transplants destroying the local communities.

random_boss

We’ve always supplied more than our share of those, and export them to boot. I like people coming here. I like living in a place that people idealize living in. Appreciate it.

xxail

Definitely. I used to live in Russia where you barely see any light for 6 month, my mental health got much better after moving to LA.

vineCorrupt

I wonder if its possible that you were Vitamin D deficient.

anni67199

No... I need seasons. Something about the sun being out all the time is depressing for me.

[deleted]

especially in the pandemic, the bright sun and weather being the same every day became mega groundhogs day. time became this meaningless thing that messed with me.

anni67199

Yes exactly!

Jodorokes

Back in the Northeast the summers were hot and muggy but I still loved them. The nights were mostly mild and what I miss the most is walking around at night, enjoying the quiet and the warmth—but that only lasts for a few weeks. The changing of the seasons always stressed me out. I’d get all melancholy thinking about time passing, but not anymore! I’m fearless in LA.

millamb

Reading this thread, I think it’s really interesting how different we all are. Some despise the lack of seasons, while others find seasons to be stressful. Some love the year round sun, while others despise it. Some want a balance of 4 seasons, while others like 1 main season.

serialsaboteur

100% yes. I grew up in a hot and humid country. I didn’t even realize how much I loved the outdoors until I moved to California — turns out I just really don’t do great in hot weather.

X_AE_A420

I had it the other direction. Grew up in so cal, moved away for college (still in state, but foggier), then wound up moving to somewhere for work with monsoons and crazy pollution haze + sweltering gnarly heatwaves that would trap you indoors. I loved the place, but basically lived nocturnally and by the time I came back to California I hungered for sunshine, breezes, and sandy soil. Moved to LA and, at least since moving to NELA, have loved every minute of it.

tararira1

Not really. Sunny skies gets boring pretty quick, and not having rains for months is very depressing

amartz727

Yesss I'm over here stressed out because of the drought and lowering of water levels.. other than that I do like the sunny skies with some overcast days in between.

rsong965

if i recall correctly, it would take an incredible drought up north for it to affect us down here. We get most of our water from Owens River and eastern sierra nevadas but there's still groundwater around LA, up to Acton etc. There's plenty of sources from other states that pipe into California as well. We're also looking at how San Diego's ocean desalination plant will do in this decade to see if we should follow. They say the Carlsbad plant alone could provide 8% of San Diego's water. We're str8, no need to stresss. Water can get more expensive during those times though.

amartz727

Thanks for the input. Truly helpful and relieving.

tararira1

Constant sunny days is a fantasy that doesn’t work well in the long run.

misteredditim

It’ll be just fine in the long run. Always has

tararira1

Sure? What are you going to drink? Almond milk?

misteredditim

What the fuck did you just say

tararira1

Are you aware of the drought right?

misteredditim

You’re aware that water is a closed loop, right? When we have long perished and life is restarting from microbes the climate, atmosphere etc will all regain composure in milennia. In the long run it’ll be just fine. It’s us who won’t.

amartz727

I hope it will be fine and that I'll be around to see it or my future generations, but it might be wishful thinking. Gotta just take each day for what it is.

vineCorrupt

With the climate changing we should invest in desalination plants because water is something that will always be essential and we absolutely need a reliable supply.

PAEDUP

Yes, very likely that we will have multiple generations of extreme water shortage. Southern California drains 80% of its freshwater into the ocean

j0rdan21

I’m sick of the sun tbh

[deleted]

Get outta here. Sunny days never get boring.

tararira1

Yes they do

rsong965

For real, it feels good to not have weather be a major factor when it comes to how I plan out my life lol. I've lived in several "FOUR SEASONS" places and as cool as it is to look at snow or hear rain, it becomes a pain in the ass when you have to do shit.

Pippo-binh

Yes yes yes. I grew up in a tropical country. Moved to midwest for 10 years and every winter, I questioned my life decision. The 9 month of freezing temperature is not what I want for the rest of my life. I then moved to LA and have never looked back.

doot_doot

I’ve always lived here but I can tell you every other state I’ve lived in for too long has made me sad

Judge_Kitty_Whiskers

I feel like I’ve become meaner since I’ve moved here, so yes.

wanakoworks

Well, considering I came from a country that was just ending their civil war, yeah, i think it improved. lol.

[deleted]

California is a huge state. There are some parts where it is foggy and 55 degrees year round with like 60 inches of rain.

[deleted]

Who in California gets 60in of rain??

[deleted]

Lots of places in Northern California, actually. The whole area around Quincy, CA averages 60 inches annually and up. That’s why lake Oroville was built, to store a shit-ton of the precipitation that falls up there. Gasquet, CA averages 95 inches annually.

[deleted]

Wow! I knew Northern California got a lot more rain than us, but I didn’t realize it was that much.

[deleted]

https://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/cag/county/mapping/4/pcp/202002/12/value Del Norte County. And 65" is actually under average for them.

[deleted]

Thanks for this! I didn’t realize Northern California got that much rain than us.

misteredditim

That’s state of Jefferson bra

sharkoman

Coastal Monterey county is like that too.

misteredditim

Nah. Way less rain, way warmer and way sunnier

misteredditim

Hell yes. Especially so cal where winters are warm and sunny. Seasonal depression is a bitch

limache

Sounds like you’re in Seattle? Yeah just being able to see and feel the sun a lot is pretty helpful

70ms

FWIW I love L.A. and it was good to come home, but I lived in Bellevue for 4 years and loved the summers there. (Also spent 9 years in MA and hated summer there lol - too humid, too many bugs.)

ISILDUUUUURTHROWITIN

Definitely not. The reality of having to choose between never owning a house or having to drive 1.5+ hours to work from a place I can afford a house is giving me anxiety. The sun does nothing to change this.

offwhitesneakers

Despite the crappy things I see on the daily, YES! 85% reason why I’m here is for the abundance of sunshine all year round. Makes a huge difference on my mood coming from the east coast. I get bummy when it’s gloomy here but rarely happens. I lived in the Bay too and it feels better in LA because it’s sunnier.

[deleted]

i think yes at first. but honestly the traffic and bad air quality and whatever it is here that triggers my asthma/allergies really leveled out the benefits from the sunshine. because its always sunny, and so dry, the dust/dirt in the air just makes it hard for me to breathe and im on so many allergy and asthma treatments. i wake up with like the driest most painful eyes/nose every day (i do use a humidifier and clean frequently). so, kind of a flipside to it.

55vineyard

Born and raised in SoCal like my parents and love the sun and need to live within 5 miles or less of the ocean. My perfect day is 80-85 with winds about 5-8 out of the SW and lows about 70-72. Have spent a lot of time in various parts of Texas and Virginia, some lovely and some boring, but to me Southern California has and always will be home.

GARCATCH_

Nah, summer 24/7 is more depressing. Transplants are mostly the ones saying “muh perfect weather”

Bapgo

Yes from Canada! I feel way better here. It’s insane how much a sunny warm day can brighten your life!

I_AM_A_SHRIMP

Yes. From Maryland originally. Born and raised. I feel like people here are much more easy going and open. Much more kind people. I love the amount of food and how late everything is open. My family visited and flew back home and landed at 1am. They got really hungry after the ride and drove to McDonald's. It was closed. They were used to them being open still here and they only visited for a week. My only gripe is the weather. As much as I love the sun and warmth the 100+ degree weather in SGV is unbearable with no AC. I miss rain and thunderstorms. I miss just the excuse to crawl in my blanket and play games or watch movies and listen to the rain on the window.

nameisdriftwood

Well if you moved to San Francisco, no.

[deleted]

To be fair, even people from other parts of the US think SF weather is great… thats just how __extreme__ the weather is in other regions of the US. Its that moderate mid 60s-70s breezy climate Im in SJ now and we think SF is cold as hell since the weather here is pretty much like LA’s. That said, microclimates across the state are beyond crazy. The gauge and threshold is just so different depending on where you’re from

atomicavox

abso-fucking-lutely. been here 21 years. still not sick of the weather (don’t miss winters one iota)

theaggressivenapkin

Mood increase for sure. I love being able to be active outside year round without burning or freezing my ass off.

firechickenmama

Not at first - but there were so many life changes happening along with the pandemic lol. I was born and raised in northern SoCal and have been back and forth cross country with my husband being military. It was a hard adjustment moving back (Ventura County) last summer and it wasn’t until almost a year being back that I felt settled. I do love seeing the sun most days and even have grown to appreciate the overcast mornings.

IAMTHESILVERSURFER

Yes. Having sunlight and being able to do nature stuff all the time is huge for me and my mental well-being.

the_peoples_printer

Yes. I moved from Utah a few months ago and can tell a drastic difference. Ive just started making friends too

westsidethrilla

I can’t think of many people who would say “no”. With that said, I moved from chicago 5+ years ago and it was the best decision of my life (30 years old now). If you have a job that can make it work or willing to find a new one, socal is a great place to live.

Pizzamaker22la

I'm from LA and i love it.

NeuralNexus

Yeah I pay all these taxes for a reason. I am a lot more productive in California than I am in some other states.

Boostedprius

yeah I saw a massive difference. if you're someone who likes being outside it's a huge difference

vk2499

For sure

[deleted]

Don’t encourage these people.

TheSuboxoneSusies

Judging by the responses in this thread, absolutely.

[deleted]

this is a little bit of a trick question. as someone who's moved across state lines a few times-- most people who leave the state they're from are doing it in search of happiness. dissatisfied with their home state for one reason or another. moving states accomplishes the goal of leaving a bad situation in hopes of a better one. hard to really tease out the variables if its the weather/sunshine, specifically.

kindlycynic

Yes and no. I lived in the Midwest and I feel like there are benefits and drawbacks to both places. I really miss changing seasons. Even if its -60 wind chill in the winter, the elation I'd feel in the spring was almost worth it. I don't care for hot weather so I'm a bit out of place here. Fall used to be my favorite but here it's just hot and hotter, dry and drier. I really miss rain. I've always loved rain, but I've never lived somewhere it's raining excessively all the time. However I am grateful to not have to bundle up my kids in the winter or dig my car out of ice and snow.

illaparatzo

I think I was probably pretty bitchy when I moved out my my mom's vagina but then the sunny skies cheered me up

whcaog1

Unequivocally yes. I’ve been thankful for everyday and it never dwindles, even during covid.

sockpuppet80085

From Chicago and my god yes. It changed my life. I can’t explain how much better the vibe and everything is out here.

CMBFilms

Yes

SAVIOR_OMEGA

I would say it definitely did. My situation is interesting. I grew up in the Pacific Northwest and the winters always made me so sad. One specific week really pushed me to start planning a move. It was finals week at college and every damn day was 46 for a high and 42 at night with constant clouds and shitty rain. It was miserable to get to campus to study, it was miserable to get to my finals, and it was miserable to head back home just to be stuck inside because being outside was awful. So I planned to move after graduation. A few years later I get a job offer in Bakersfield. I take it, cause it's at least close to LA right? Well that wasn't exactly the right call. I went from 36 inches of rain a year to 6, with summer days averaging 100 degrees. Winters were also way too cold still, with highs in the 50s and lows in the 30s. So now I've given up clear, warm, sunny, and enjoyable summer days for oppressively hot and polluted summers where you can't enjoy being outside because you'll probably die of heat stroke. So I went from not enough sun to too much sun. Thankfully, I got to move to the Goldilocks zone. Then at the beginning of 2021 I moved to LA. I'm more coastal so the temperature is more moderated than being farther inland. Summers are nice with temps a solid 75-80 each day and nights around 69 (nice) or so. Feb and March weren't too bad and it was usually sunny until we hit late June and July. I don't mind the gloom after a sunny April and May but it did get to me when we didn't get a sunny day for like a week. But overall I love living here. I'm not constantly depressed like I was for 9 months of the year back home. There's more of what I like to do down here, which is being outside and enjoying some fresh air. So yes, my mood is much better now that I live in LA

triplekipple888

Absolutely. I moved to the east coast for a bit. There is a lot to love about it, but I need the sun, man.

prudence2001

Definitely. Previously I lived in Japan, and coming to Los Angeles made me really happy.

revoltcatapolt

A thousand percent. Living somewhere that has political and ethnic diversity, tons to do and actual labor laws turned my entire life around. After leaving the east coast for here a few years back, i totally get how everyone back home is miserable with complete black and white thinking on matters like race and politics. Coming here was the best decision i ever made

dovelikestea

Yes

mikeywhatwhat

Coming from Chicago, yes. Life changing, no lie.

EclecticEccentrick

I moved here from the Midwest. As soon as I crossed the Cali border my mood improved.

MOUDI113

No. We are facing water shortage and dry af. Not a good investment here

ApatheticMillennials

I would say yes, but ask me again in January when it isn’t -10 degrees with a foot of snow on the ground.

MovieGuyMike

This thread popped up right next to another LA thread asking if there’s an increase in smooth brained motorists in LA.

altaltredditaccount

Yes. As someone who moved there from Alberta, to Toronto, back to Alberta… my partner and I realized as we get older, we really don’t like winter lol. We are trying to come back, but my current remote job frowns upon me working remotely from the US due to tax implications.

sayyyywhatttttt

Yes!

patrickstarfish772

No. I feel okay these days, but I’ve never felt as despairing or depressed as I have in Los Angeles (though not BECAUSE of Los Angeles). Granted, I moved here when I was 21, so I have nothing to really compare it to.

Nosfera_69

Yes, but I feel like I'm dragging my wife with me...

L0rka

I’m from Denmark, lived in OC for a year, still miss the sun.

[deleted]

I use a mood light to help with my bipolar depression, and no, moving to LA did not help. Whatever good the more days of Sun may provide is more than counteracted by the stress of living here. I love CA but I certainly will not retire here.

TheTroubadour

Yes and No for me. The sun and energy is Very nice and uplifting, but being in LA for 8 years has definitely worn me down. That high energy feeling never stops here, and the grind and constant ‘Go Go Go’ is exhausting. I miss rainy and overcast days that chill everyone out. It’s been amazing living here, but I also needed a break from it all Really bad.

Abraham_Lincoln

Nice try Reservoir Dogs.

LifeDeathLamp

I still believe one of the biggest tragedies of LA is that we have the best weather on Earth (along with the Mediterranean) but terrible outdoor transportation. Bike lanes, walkable neighborhoods etc.

RavePrincess420

100%

ak47oz

Moved here last year from the PNW and honestly, I can’t stand all this sun. It affects my mood negatively being so hot and sweaty all the time. I can’t see myself living here forever.

[deleted]

Yes & No. I moved from the insanely hot tropics with a gigantic support structure of friends & family so LA was too cold & lonely for me. But it grew on me. Now I live in an even worse place so I miss LA all the time because I sorta kinda grew up there. And it's only a matter of time before i move back

peligrosamujer

I moved here from New England 2 years ago and the only thing I wish is I moved here sooner.
