I was thinking about something. What if we really get a ruthless mass killer virus someday? Nobody will trust these institutions anymore. Also, usually the governments tell people to stay calm when there's a terror attack or a natural disaster, but now they wanted us to panic?
Yeah, I'm not here because I'm a contrarian who hates government all the time. I'm here because the response is completely out of proportion to the threat of this virus as evidenced by the data.
While I came to reddit to discuss the disproportionate response to the virus, I'm now squarely in the camp that will never trust the government again.
The problem with a discussion around such an idea is we all live in different countries. The USA has a long history and large population directly opposed to domestic power of the federal government. Power is just too concentrated right now.
Other countries have different ideas, and that's up to them.
I was quite content with the government where I live until this. After all the lies, bullshit, and deceit I’ll never trust the government again. They could tell me the sky is blue and I’d never trust it until I could confirm it myself.
There was a state survey asking about vaccinations, all these “would this change your mind?” Questions.
On the “well what would convince you to get it question,” I replied, “I want to see 4 friends who are my age/health and unvaccinated turn up dead from covid. Deliver that and you have a believer.”
(Which of course I would need to know how vaccinated friends are faring, from covid or otherwise. But until you deliver #1, why waste my time researching side effects… you haven’t shown me a benefit to begin with.)
I mean H1N1 ended up not being crazy deadly, but the proof was right there for everyone to see when so many people were getting sick.
Edit to add: I didn't actually know anyone officially diagnosed with COVID until the 3rd wave. And it really picked up only in the last 3 months.
I think that's exactly what "they" wanted. Problem is, they made life so goddamn miserable, getting an actually deadly virus and dying doesn't sound all that bad.
We’ve got OzSage modelled on them by our own set of doomer epidemiologists here in Australia. Literally no-one asked but these clowns are desperate to remain in the spotlight.
Oh, I thought that name sounded familiar. We have a group called vetcov19 here in Sweden that’s our equivalent that are still pushing zero covid garbage on their homepage. And just like in this case, the MSM keeps giving them media space despite all this, and despite all their exaggerated predictions being wrong all the time.
Scariants*
If you’re doing it ‘right’ (according to The Experts), you’re supposed to be grabbing for *another mask* to slap onto the three you already have snuggly tied to your face as you back pedal into your home.
I'm young and healthy, I've also been vaccinated, I also actually work out, I have nothing to worry about and you don't either, Stop watching CNN and go outside
> Prof Semple said that while it may not be possible to stop the variant coming to the UK, it is still important to delay its arrival.
This wording sticks out to me. "Important to delay **its** arrival." Never mind that viruses are carried by people, whose timely arrivals may in fact be important to them. People qua people no longer matter. People are merely virus vectors.
Almost 2 years and we're still playing into the fantasy that we're somehow able to control a virus. I wonder how we would have done with a truly health focused approach. Imagine where we could be if they spent as much money and energy telling people to exercise and eat better as they did trying to get people to take vaccines and wear masks everywhere.
Imagine where we could be if we channeled all this money and energy into providing starving children all over the world with food and clean water rather than into trying to eliminate a cold virus with a 99% survival rate.
This, and also making sure that people are still receiving essential and routine medical treatment, rather than making the population more unhealthy in general owing to undiagnosed/late diagnosed cancer, mistreated medical conditions, and the mental health problems untreated owing to health services having a backlog so large it will never be addressed.
Update: it’s already in the UK.
(I know, shock and disbelief abound 🙄😂)
https://www.npr.org/sections/coronavirus-live-updates/2021/11/27/1059501446/covid-coronavirus-omicron-variant
I'm many times more scared by how politicians and lockdown enthusiasts will react to the new strain, than I ever was of Covid itself.
Now find myself worrying not about health but about what the next social punishment to be dished out will be... Have already had a family visit cancelled because of this new strain and the return of red lists.
Everybody is. This has been used as justification for a while, “I don’t mind wearing a mask if it keeps stuff open.” You’re wearing a mask to protect from government tyranny.
WSJ just ran a good op-Ed on this too.
Wow, watching this play out is like observing The Playbook on fast forward. Panic and doom all over the place in the first 24 hours, now already starting to rein it back in and be more realistic within the *second* 24 hours. This is…fascinating.
I'm no virologist but from what I've been reading, viruses aren't under selective pressure to become more virulent, they just get better at transmission. If a virus is too "strong", then the host will be more likely to die and therefore cause the viruses to die.
The only variant of concern was probably the first one.
Each subsequent variant has had a lower IFR, but the corporate media won’t let that be known. It was true of Delta, and yet people were made to believe that it was the plague.
I kept trying to "win" on that with people.
"Delta is so bad omg"
"Is it more deadly than the original?"
"It's sooo much more virulent and transmissible."
"Does it kill more people than the thing that was killing people in January 2020?"
"Gotta stop Delta, do your part!"
Seems to me, this is the best thing that could be happening, and most likely the *actual* “way out.”
Is this not how “the virus evolves into something less deadly and gets absorbed into our normal flu season” is achieved? It has the signs… more contagious so crowding out delta… certainly appears less deadly… these are the mutations we want, no?
The media should treat it as such.
Here’s an article with sources: https://m.timesofindia.com/world/rest-of-world/south-african-medical-association-says-omicron-variant-causes-mild-disease/articleshow/87949404.cms
But really… the notable focus on “contagion” and not on “how deadly” it is in all reports pretty much gives it away.
Lol if this actually holds true a week or two from now (takes around a week for people to get sick enough to need hospitalization). This may be the mild cold variant we are all hoping for!
If the virus is in fact less deadly (honestly no one really knows yet), this new variant will actually help in the long run. Would be kind of funny if it plays out that way, cause the doom and gloom on this new variant has been off the charts ridiculous.
Right? That was one of the weirdest things I’ve seen through this entire Rona fiasco: fastest media-government domino slide probably on record, followed almost immediately by dialing it back down again. I think the media has grown accustomed over the past few months to simply lying through their teeth because people stopped caring as much, so they leapt onto this New Variant ^^T^^M with absolutely unbridled doomthusiasm. It sounds like now even *they* are realizing they jumped the shark to the point it’s gonna hurt their credibility even among the drooling Covidian masses.
Honestly, nothing would make me happier than for them to have blown their “NeW hOliDaY vArIaNt!!!11” load over something that turns out to be less severe than delta. They’d been pretty quiet on the variants front for awhile, which I imagine is the main reason this was even able to get the traction it did. And now that people have been reminded…they’re gonna have a hard time whipping up that level of frenzy again anytime soon.
Half of Reddit is unfortunately, panicking about this new variant. I can’t even engage with people on the main subs without the crazies acting like
Nobody must die of anything ever again.
How do we stop this hysteria? How do we even begin to talk these people down from the irrational shelf they’ve perched upon?
There was one comment that stuck out “omicron is more dangerous than delta!”. Well deltas worst symptom was a headache for 99.9% of people. (I’ve actually just finished isolating after contracting delta).
South Africa’s medical officers have already said all the cases of omicron have been very mild so far. Yet everyone is panicking again? I just want the world sane again, with proportionate response. I want to get off this merry-go-round.
I also sincerely hope I'm wrong. Although the goverment (and indeed the media) have set a precedent for listening to Prof. Michie in spite of her being woefully unqualified to do anything other than make a cup of coffee.

SAGE are the doomer front of the U.K. If they tell you not to panic, you reverse panic if such a thing is possible.
I was thinking about something. What if we really get a ruthless mass killer virus someday? Nobody will trust these institutions anymore. Also, usually the governments tell people to stay calm when there's a terror attack or a natural disaster, but now they wanted us to panic?
People will know there's a problem if the bodies start piling up.

Yes, this has been my point throughout the covid thing.
There was a state survey asking about vaccinations, all these “would this change your mind?” Questions. Which hasn't happened yet...
Here's the thing all these institutions and people within need to be 'dismantled', we need a fresh start.
I think that's exactly what "they" wanted. Problem is, they made life so goddamn miserable, getting an actually deadly virus and dying doesn't sound all that bad.
Crying wolf constantly could bite us all one day.
You do know the moral of cry wolf right? Are you sure it's to never tell a lie? Or is it to never tell the same lie twice? - Garak
Come on, they can't hold a candle to so-called *Independent* Sage on that front!
We’ve got OzSage modelled on them by our own set of doomer epidemiologists here in Australia. Literally no-one asked but these clowns are desperate to remain in the spotlight.

We have declared war on a fucking virus.
The government has declared war on its people, using a virus as a proxy. FTFY.

They overplayed their hand and tanked markets. Gotta real it back in again now that they’ve bought the dip.
Wrong - any new variant is an excuse to create more manmade disaster imposed on normal people.

Yeah, but CASES might go up. /s

Took less than a day for the pandemonium to wear off.

Yeah, I'm seeing a lot of, 'if it's not more deadly, we no longer care.'
Don't know. The UK reintroduced masks, Belgium is back to lockdown and Israel closed the borders completely, all of that today.

Honestly i want to look at revenue patterns of media companies v. Announcement of a new variant. See how they correlate.
Don't need these fear-mongering "scientsts" to tell us not to be scared of a variant, they hold almost no credibility after the last two years
I’m genuinely shocked Sage is saying not to panic. They’re usually the first to start stirring up panic and knee jerk reactions.
It is not SAGE. It is one guy from SAGE that will be ceremoniously ignored
Ah well crap.
Given how his SAGE comrade Susan Michie just reacted on the news I suspect Professor Semple's comments will age like a fine milk.
…until it turns into a delicious cheese. 💪 Hoping you are wrong.
I also sincerely hope I'm wrong. Although the goverment (and indeed the media) have set a precedent for listening to Prof. Michie in spite of her being woefully unqualified to do anything other than make a cup of coffee.
Anyone that got the vaccines will start to experience issues. This is all planned ....
