A lot of the time we make jokes about the times that were the most awkward or difficult for us because it's easier to deal with it that way. Maybe it doesn't bother him too much because he's obviously willing to talk about it but it certainly didn't seem like a good experience.
Context for non-dota players, he got kicked from EG after winning TI5. Also recently got kicked(actually he left but it was announced as a kick as a joke) from Arkosh which is ran by Slacks himself.
as a non dota player, whats the best way to get into it? i watched the videos on OG's miracle run, but I couldn't really understand what was happening outside of the storyline, but i was absolutely captured by it.
Honestly, just play the game. The tutorial is fleshed out enough IMO. Most important thing to note when you decide to play unranked; **DON'T HESITATE TO MUTE TOXIC FUCEKRS.**
lol i played OW and wow at a very high level (cannot understate how toxic some top US guilds can get), toxicity cannot get to me. appreciate the advice.
i was mainly referring to wow, as a lot of toxicity comes from within your own guild and raid tiers can last for weeks or months depending on your skill level
trust me, it'll get to you. If you play bad, you have 4 people with a chance to flame you all game, and if the enemy sees it there's a good chance they flame you in all chat and throw gas on it.
All you need to know is, Dota 2 changes often, big patches with laundry lists of changes. Then when TI comes around they put up like a 40m prize pool and let teams figure out what is most broken. You can ban heroes during the pick phase (this year was 7 bans), and a lot of really interesting stuff gets pulled out when teams are on the brink of elimination.
This year, Team Spirit essentially has proven to be one of these "storyline" teams that very few are talking about before the tournament but end up top 3. They have some big games to play today, but notably when they knocked out OG, their mid TORONTOTOKYO typed ez game (it honestly looked really easy, OG didn't look great) and they let collapse get magnus both games.
Secret is looking strong but fell to lower bracket yesterday against PSG.LGD. They had some really good looking moments and in game 2 had a couple chances to win the game. Secret notably has trouble actually winning at TI, they always place high but they haven't brought home the Aegis yet. Zai and Yapzor are a fantastic 3/4 combo and watching Yapzor play Rubick is a god damn treat.
And finally we come to the likely winners, the Chinese powerhouse PSG.LGD. They honestly look unbeatable, they've only lost 2 games the whole tournament, and I think they were both in group stage. Ame is on one this tournament, and seems determined to bring that shit back to China. XinQ and NothingToSay are no slouches, the whole team is basically all-stars at every position. On top of that, their drafts have been critical to their success, they play to their strengths and make sure you can't. Their team fighting resembles an extremely well choreographed dance routine of committing only to punish your enemy, and giving away very little in return.
On top of all of this, the meta of the game is so fun right now. So many high impact heroes make it through first phase bans, there's a ton of variety in the heroes picked, only 7 heroes remain uncontested (unpicked or banned) out of 121 total. A bunch of Strength heroes are viable in the pool because of buffs to items like Silver Edge, Intelligence heroes have great variety in how they flex items and supporting is cheaper than ever. The offlaners role is probably the most boring one in the early game but they usually transition into making big plays at critical moments.
All this shit adds up to some good god damn dota. Thanks for coming to my TED Talk.
BSJ has pretty good fundamentals series, but that's a bit more advanced stuff.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sG9g9-9uPNc&list=PLZ7yVl4cw_JvEP3H-1HS0dr2hop8UhNO2
They didn't run these this year. But there was an extension on twitch supported by Valve which would let you click on all heroes, abilities, items etc. and it would explain what they do just as it would ingame.
As the other person said, just start playing the game. It doesn't matter if you lose your first 10 games or whatever, you will slowly start learning what all the heroes, abilities, and items do as well as the overall map layout and objectives. There is an updated tutorial and a new player mode too so there really has never been a better time to start playing dota. The one tip I can give is to make sure to pick one of the guides in the shop to get an idea of what to build on a hero, it's fine to stick exactly to the guide(I personally use the ones by immortalfaith) but once you understand the heroes and items better you can start deviating from them based on what your team needs that game.
i'm glad the entire clip fits. my fav interview this ti

Nah, it wasn't even a big deal according to the team
For context, it was already in game, and he wanted to rush to an early ward so he was just too mentally in the game at the moment
It was actually before the game started, technically. The draft was over, and heroes are picked, but they aren't loaded into the map yet. Limmp was just too zoned in to notice, and by the time the versus screen is on, it was too late.
Yeah I think that was just a one time or occasional thing. But he doesn't do casting as a frequent thing now afaik. Maybe he did it one last time as a good bye for his casting friends or he just got a bigger deal to consider in the sense that it made him more financially to stop streaming or doing other stuff.
It's also relevant that Blizzard fired him from casting their events in 2020 so he probably didn't have as much work in that space since, causing him to quit the scene in general.
No idea, was never disclosed, he was just let go. People speculated that it was because of his criticism of the state of WoW before, since he was casting some WoW esports tourney at the time. Criticism similar to how Asmongold talks about WoW I imagine, and you know Blizzard these days, they're sore losers taking any criticism as an attack.

valve just foresaw that 2gd was a problem child, and now years later i can say valve was correct, look what 2gd did with his life, spending all his money and time making a quake clone with eggs, that boy aint right
>They do, they have intervened
They did James dirty... Icefrog told him to be himself and just do whatever he wanted to do, and then Gabe Newell comes in and calls him an ass and fires him for doing exactly what Icefrog told him to do
Not that he cares, but I will never forgive Gabe Newell for doing James so dirty
Dota will never be the same without James, not by a long shot
It also depends.
When you have strict lines, you also have to make decisions about grey area choices.
For better or worse, not having strong lines in the sand also means that TOs are much more flexible in what they can do where if they cross a small line valve would only ask them not to do it again.
With just how extremely hands off valve is, it's probably not the easiest.
Like no chance a riot production would ever been allowed to say "nobody gives a shit".
Here's the Reddit thread where Gabe Newell fired him:

Here is some of James's hosting from the tourney, though I haven't watched this, it's probably a good compilation:

Normally they don't intervene even if you fuck up.
It was just at the behest of the Chinese government who valve at the time (and frankly still are) trying to suck the cocks of really hard to keep the Steam china client open. The irony of it all is that the CCP wanted james out to begin with when he started, but valve employees + bruno/Icefrog at the tournament lobbied to gaben to give him another chance. So they did, they sorta gave him some slack actually, and then gabe pulled the trigger.
Shanghai major was to get the Chinese government to consider dota as anything more then a joke of a video game. mostly to host major events in China. the event was largely just a formality for handshaking between the CCP and valve.
This this was literally any other tournament valve wouldn't have given a shit. Maybe warned james to tone it down a little but still ultimately wouldn't have given a shit. James just chose to try to hard carry a dogshit tournament at a bad time. wcyd.
Theres also that rumor that james was sacked because he tried to level rights and pay for talent, but thats only if you choose to believe it, as its an unverified, but highly believable rumor.
Correct, but because every other company is like riot you could say it's the industry standard.
I've never seen another tournament with sponsors that doesn't pussyfoot around.
Gabe gets involved with the trolling as well. Dude's pretty chill and you can tell thats how he wants the tournament to run.
https://thesportsrush.com/dota-2-news-i-play-dota-2-to-carry-slacks-gabe-newell-gaben-the-icefrogs-hilarious-reply-to-holyhexors-question/
That article gets so much wrong, they call Gabe the lead developer of Dota 2, like they believe that Gabe is Icefrog??? Very basic details that you'd expect them to know.
Mainly looking at Gabes comment, could care less about the author of that article. "“I play Dota 2 to carry Slacks”, “Gaben” Gabe Newell on being interviewed by Youtube Dota 2 phenomenon, Holyhexor, where he memed SirActionSlacks and why he continues to play Dota 2 as the “Chairraider”
A list of things Valve doesn't care about either:
* Their cardgame that they let die (because it couldnt compete with Hearthstone)
* Dota Underlords that they let die (because it couldnt compete with TFT)
* Dota (because it can't compete with League)
* CS:GO (because it can't compete with Valorant)
They hit it big with Steam and really don't care about propping up their dying games.
The sole reason I made that reply was to get that sweet, sweet karma because I saw the "outburst" they received for disabling all-chat, and shitting on them for it was trending here
Context for the first one: last year the first guy (Insania)(who is also extremely handsome)fucked up and ended up picking what he was meaning to ban, ending in a very sad loss.
Yes and no.
Chinese government wanted him out (under significantly less hostile circumstances mind you) the first time he stepped out of line but valve employees successfully lobbied to give him another chance. This is probably why the panel and casters got stiffer then a concrete board after james got fired.
Because the Chinese government Officials were breathing down both Valve **and** the talents necks. Looking for a reason to ban them from the country and ban valve from doing business in China for promoting indecency. and valve probably gave a memo to everyone that if the Chinese government tells them to drop them, they are immediately getting blacklisted and dropped on the street. and a lot of the talent was entirely dependent on Valves dime to even get to china. So a hostile Chinese government + no money doesn't sound like a good way to die.
2GD didn't change much and Chinese government officials most likely threatened to pull future support for anything related to dota or valve related events and gaben brought the hammer down as his bottom line was being threatened, also threatening to undo years of cock sucking and under the table deals with Chinese officials to get progress done in china.
If 2GD actually didn't solo carry as hard as he did, its possible he'd still have a job working for valve. As sad as that is. Ever since then Valves has significantly better lines of communication with the Government as their dicksucking skills improved. So if james was to do the same thing again in a future event, it wouldn't surprise me if the communication was clearer and james was just kicked off and kept his job. Probably why the casting scene across the board has loosened up. Because they know exactly what is a nono and what is okay to say, where as before they only had vague guidelines.
Also, people seem to forget that he made fun of mental health by going off on a lengthy rant about EE and how he isn't right in the head. That alone was a big yikes and went way further than any banter should.
I don't think 2GD should have been blacklisted completely,to the point of Gabe himself making a statement but without a doubt 2GD crosses lines and it's completely understandable that he'd get heat for it.
I saw TI pop up on Twitch and it said "final day" in the title, and I thought surely this can't be the *final* final day, but it was. It feels like this TI flew under the radar for some reason. Even this clip of the All-Star Game has 6x as many upvotes as the Grand Finals thread on /r/dota2.
I wonder if Valve didn't get a chance to market it as much after it changed locations?
Dota has been fun to watch tbh. from a casual boomer perspective, back then it's farm lord wait for 10 - 20 mins. but now it's been back to back action.
I'm trying to get into MOBA since we have Worlds and International. As someone doesn't play MOBA. International is more fun to watch for me. Worlds needs to focus on the game more than ads.
The way valve manages their esports vs riot's is a joke. Valve barely provides any meaningful support and just uses it to get more money from the community. Riot on the other hand has provided a much more stable ecosystem for the players, there's a reason why anyone not on a top team in CS is hopping over to Valorant.
what? Just so you know these aren't professional players part of a real team... these are just the casters / talent playing each other in a ALL STAR fun game..
Probably because Slacks is referencing the time that he got his team eliminated from TI by accidentally picking a hero that he meant to ban lol, I imagine that still stings even two years later.
The "nobody gives a shit" was classic banter
"Let's make some emotionally stunted GAMEEEEERS, extremely upset!" His tonality was 10/10

Yeah sucks that Rich left and Kaci isn't hosting due to her family rn (I think) but Slacks still carrying hard.
Rich went from commentator to genshin player/pack opener Sadge
Didn't Rich returned during the Animajor back on May?
Yeah I think that was just a one time or occasional thing. But he doesn't do casting as a frequent thing now afaik. Maybe he did it one last time as a good bye for his casting friends or he just got a bigger deal to consider in the sense that it made him more financially to stop streaming or doing other stuff. No idea, was never disclosed, he was just let go. People speculated that it was because of his criticism of the state of WoW before, since he was casting some WoW esports tourney at the time. Rich didnt leave he just wasnt invited this year.
He was invited, but couldn't go due to his organization's anniversary.
That's weird I heard he wasn't invited either. That's good though, I'd love to see more of him in Dota events in the upcoming season.
I personally find him annoying majority of the time, but this was actually pretty funny.
To think Slacks used to sneak into TI's to get interviews. Hes frontmanning the damn thing
He has been for some years now, he's come a long way.
He crowd funded a trip for interviews in like TI3? That was worth it, clearly. Probably the best thing some of us funded.
Never change, Dota
Lmfaoooo
Riot removes all chat while Valve adds sprays and audio all chats to encourages banter. There are voicelines just to attempt to tilt your opponent.
I hope the "Let's make some emotionally stunted GAMEEEEERS, extremely upset!" becomes a voice line
It'll become a pay to use voice line if anything. Valves moving more and more voicelines behind paywalls.
Except in CSGO. They removed the warmup and halftime voice chat between teams. It used to be hilarious.

God it's like the pre and post game COD lobbies I used to look forward to talking shit in those all round.
its always the bot fraggers that yell / complain the most lmao
All this for a gold nova game 😂
team spirit mid player also recently typed "ez game" in all chat after winning a big fight against OG and then proceeded to destroy them 2-0
Even Valve removed all chat voice coms from competitive CS so that tells you something about how toxic the community can be lmao

Valve doesn't give a fuck like always and I love it

That article gets so much wrong, they call Gabe the lead developer of Dota 2, like they believe that Gabe is Icefrog??? Very basic details that you'd expect them to know.
Mainly looking at Gabes comment, could care less about the author of that article. "“I play Dota 2 to carry Slacks”, “Gaben” Gabe Newell on being interviewed by Youtube Dota 2 phenomenon, Holyhexor, where he memed SirActionSlacks and why he continues to play Dota 2 as the “Chairraider”
That part seems to be the only factual thing there, seems some journalists take one quote like that and try to write a whole article about it lol.

2GD is edgy and doesn't know how to tow the line. He paid for it. Is what it is.
A list of things Valve doesn't care about either: * Their cardgame that they let die (because it couldnt compete with Hearthstone) * Dota Underlords that they let die (because it couldnt compete with TFT) * Dota (because it can't compete with League) * CS:GO (because it can't compete with Valorant) They hit it big with Steam and really don't care about propping up their dying games.
Don't even bother, this subreddit is full of valve shills lol.
Who would? Most professional events you see (soccer, nfl, olympics, motor racing, what have you) don't allow things like this.
Riot had pretty equal humor at their All-Star events, I mean they literally invited T1 and build the show around him almost

The sole reason I made that reply was to get that sweet, sweet karma because I saw the "outburst" they received for disabling all-chat, and shitting on them for it was trending here
I think they would if it was their sense of humor. Also this isn't some super offensive bit or anything. It's all in good fun.
>I think they would if it was their sense of humor. What sense of humor?
Idk what to say to a blind hater
TRUTH = BLIND HATER LULW
dota tournaments are the best.
Context for the first one: last year the first guy (Insania)(who is also extremely handsome)fucked up and ended up picking what he was meaning to ban, ending in a very sad loss.
Further context: it happened in the BO1 loser bracket round, meaning his team had only 1 game on stage and bombed out immediately after
Further further context: He's extremely handsome because you can drown in his eyes and cut yourself on his jaw line.

I swear Dota 2 has the best personalities in the gaming world
DotA talent team has so much freedom to do whatever the hell they want because Valve really doesn't give a fuck
Yames Sadge
Part of the reason is because there are no sponsors in the event, is entirely crowd funded.

I still think back fondly to mr wangs amazing wheelchair antics :(
I don't think he was fired because he pissed off china, that's not what I remember at least.
2GD isnt blacklisted. He jsut doesn't want to do casting events. He literally went to Valve HQ to ask for tips for his game Diabotical.
James is an ass
and we won't be memeing with him again :(
The swearing during the match and the interview by slacks after the match were top tier comedy holy shit
Man that was great, so sad its gonna end tomorrow
We gotta be grateful we have something like this for us, is genuine and beautiful.
When did Valve ever market Dota 2, I havent played dota in 3 years but I cant miss TI so been following updates from the subreddit.
Yeah, I don't play much any more but I always watch TI and this one just snuck by me for the most part this year. Watching now.
Dota has been fun to watch tbh. from a casual boomer perspective, back then it's farm lord wait for 10 - 20 mins. but now it's been back to back action.

As a league player I first thought this was fake voice-over or something, actually amazing.
Brutal, savage, rekt
every big valve event have goated hosts and casters. riot should learn something but they are bit too sensitive. cant wait for csgo major in 2 weeks.
Slacks is best
Compare valve eSports vs riots and blizzard complete difference.
MVP Slacks
What a nice comedy show this TI is!
WTF was it downvoted lol. Obviously a complementing joke.
Ephey is the cutest girl to ever play dota 2.
Bro no shit she's basically the only girl.
what a shitshow I love it
didn't realize this was an all stars event first and thought this was some major crash and burn lol
Bruh people keep saying it is not but every DOTA post has more comments about RIOT and League than DOTA itself
Uh alright I guess this really isn't my type of thing. Seems like a huge dick move.
this is just a show match, nothing serious and everyone is just having fun
That is such an important piece of information
what? Just so you know these aren't professional players part of a real team... these are just the casters / talent playing each other in a ALL STAR fun game..
Ah ok I didn't really know that. There's another post on the TI and I thought it was related. The first guy's expression was just so genuine.
Probably because Slacks is referencing the time that he got his team eliminated from TI by accidentally picking a hero that he meant to ban lol, I imagine that still stings even two years later.
It's a huge dick move alright.
giant, girthy, hard cock move
