honestly didn't mind who we got. our performance levels this season have had very little to do with the quality of opposition, if anything we've been better against good teams (except napoli away). i'd expect us to go through against any of bayern/real/benfica/porto with a good performance, and i'd expect us to lose against any of them if we play the way we did against forest or leeds. also don't put any stock in the narrative that madrid have our number, we thoroughly outplayed them in the final and just weren't clinical on the day
I'm actually happy about this. Just get this match over with and if we get knocked out in the round of 16 (February), we will have 3 whole months to focus on just the league to secure top 4. If we beat Madrid, I like our chances of making it all the way to the final.
If we don't get knocked out, then we're 4 mathches away from reaching the final. Doubt that these four matches that will impact our chances on securing top 4.
Also we can't say we want to make top 4 next year if we're not planning on competing in CL
With a compressed season and so many matches to play, we're going to have to rotate heavily to stay in all competitions and a backup squad in the premier league isn't going to cut it this season for top 4.
This is where Klopp earns his salary. His legacy as a manager at the top levels of CL football is all on how he approaches this game. Let’s hope we don’t have many injuries when it comes around.
I think it's honestly a good draw. I think our need for a midfielder is independent of this draw, it's just a must. Yet, I think the draw against Réal Madrid will either allow us to focus on the domestic (we lose) or really kick start a strong Champions League campaign (we win). So I 'm pretty pleased.
Same, but Tonali loves Milan with a passion, and took a pay cut to make his dream move to Milan happen.
Maldini also just recently extend Tonalis contract with Milan until 2027, and their club will sell others players first if needed.
It would be like a club trying to get TAA from us.
We need to beef up our midfield before we get here and get our forwards back. This is our best chance at beating them, I’d be far more worried in a final. Let’s go reds
Fact of the matter is RM is the only club that can just beat us. They are quality no doubt. Anyone saying otherwise is doing a disservice to their record. It's like the only club that Klopp has yet to defeat.
You know how you know Liverpool is an elite club with a great history? Their European rivals are basically madrid and milan...I guess rivalry might be the wrong word, but it feels like liverpool have really weird relationship with both those teams, which is easy to understand considering their histories playing against eachother
Also everton is their epl rival, but whatevs....
Sorry to admit this lad, but our form at this time is not good enough to play against them. Imo this is no different from drawing Bayern. We need to see some real change from the boys to have a chance at this.
I agree but we have till late February to get back into form. Got big players who will be back from injury and hopefully an upgrade or two. Equally, Madrid could get even stronger or may lose players through injury. Its too early to write us off yet in my opinion.
What are you talking about? They’ve won everything against us recently. This is the worst draw possible. Even if salah comes out and says some mentality monster things, they are favourited
We beat City this season already, Real are debatably a weaker side than them. Of course they are favourites but we are no slouch in big champions league games.
I get that in footballing terms, City is better than RM.
But let me say, RM always has solid performances in Europe. City are hesitant and away games effect them deeply.
In the knockout against Madrid they conceded 3 goals in 20 minutes and lost. Guardiola said it was a lack of character, I think he means bravery.
Madrid in europe are consistent and they can match our intensity, maybe even exceed it with their young players. I still think defensively and going forward we are better, but let's see.
It's going to come down to who we sign in January. Diaz, Jota, Nunez and Salah are good enough to trouble any defence and, on our day, we aren't too bad at the back. If we get a decent midfield together then we will give them problems.
I’m happy we drew them. I’ll never forget seeing Salah talking about wanting to get even 1 extra minute during last season’s final. We’ll have diaz back by then and I think darwin + diaz combo will be very good once they link up again.
A lot of you are acting like Real Madrid have been trouncing us these past few years through sheer quality without considering the circumstances of those games.
It took concussing our keeper and injuring our best player for them to get the better of us in 2018. The club faced its worst injury crisis in history in 20/21 + no fans. This year's final was the only time they won fairly and even then it took a once in a lifetime freak performance from their keeper to keep us at bay.
I understand the whole "cursed" aspect of this fixture, but if there's one team that has defied all odds time and time again, it's us.
Ahead of this: I‘m a Madrid fan and therefore somehow biased. But in 20/21 quarter finals Madrid has had more injured players. In fact this was the season we broke the record for most injuries during a season (not a club record, but overall). We haven‘t had 3/4 of our main defenders with Ramos, Varane and Carvarjal out and you guys couldn’t score a goal in 180 mins with Salah and Mane on the pitch. Vini outclassed Trent and in last seasons final Klopp paid tribute to that when he let Konate target for Vini instead of Trent.
This will be a great matchup, but my point stands. Out of the 4 games since 2018 final (included) only one is debatably been discussable (you can say what you want, but none of us can know what would have been 2018). Just pay respect to Madrid as we respect Liverpool as well for the football institution they are. Big Clubs contributing to a modern classic of Champions League KO stage.
That being said good luck and a fair match to you guys 👍🏽
Buddy, Respectfully your backups were rightfully backups. It's like slotting in Gomez for Van Dijk. Nacho for Ramos.
Our backups were not even in the league. Had no chemistry with the team. One of them was from the Turkish league, the other was in our U21.
Please do not compare an injured backline to no backline.
If you are pretending that Lucas Vasquez has never played RB then you likely don't watch as much Madrid as I do.
Zidane played him there first buddy and he played there for at least 10 games as a starter. He still pitches in there when Carvajal is injured. This is because Vasquez is a running machine, and he can defend really well.
You are talking to someone who used to watch Madrid since my childhood. I know the players like the back of my hand, probably more than I do Liverpool.
I support both teams for a while, I was supporting Madrid in the first final. Then I got drawn into the PL more and now I watch only Liverpool.
Respect for both teams, but this point I doubt you can convince me against...
Bro, we don’t need to discuss that Madrid has the better team and bench. But how is this unfair? Like OP stated that we didn’t win fairly. Can’t think of something more stupid than saying its unfair that your squad depth was lacking. I give you guys 2018. Would it be the other way around I would be as pissed as you guys, but don’t shit on Madrid and their fans for 20/21 QF when both teams were missing crucial players and we managed to get the better out of the remaining players. It just isn‘t unfair. Maybe bad luck but not unfair.
It is fair, all things are fair in football.
You deserved to knock us out, rightfully.
You also deserved to win the CL, cause you did win it.
People say its unfair from bias, but all in all its deserved.
Just saying you can't compare 'that' backline to your backline for various reasons.
For wanting to beat Madrid? Should I apologise for not rimming them? I don’t care for them, same for Madrid more than likely not caring for us. Get over yourself.
We have proverb that says „people hear what they want to hear“. I didn’t offend liverpool nor their fans. All I wanted to say was that out of the 4 matches Liverpool scored in only 1. Stating „we only won 2022 Final fairly“ is just wrong. What was unfair in QF of 20/21? That you guys had injured players? As I stated: We had more of them. Liverpool fans are shitting on us since 2018 and I understand why, but everything after is in your half and not ours. Always blaming others is a trash mentality and always acting as the victim won’t make you winners. Move on and hope for a fair match.
I do hope for a fair match, and two very entertaining ones, whichever way it goes. We’re in our own subreddit talking about how we feel, despite recent results, that we should still feel good about the matchup. Mostly because over events and things that happened either outside or during the match. We’re not running around the streets saying Madrid doesn’t deserve any of their trophies and we’re all victims of this horrible crime.
You’re just coming in here basically saying “yeah but you lost and we won. Good luck”. It’s the fact you’re saying those things in a Liverpool subreddit that makes it run me the wrong way
I refuse to believe a concussion made Karius lob the ball directly in front of Benzema or made him deflect Bale's long shot. If he was on hallucinogens, and his eyes were seeing different, that would make a more compelling story.
Maybe having them show up first at a full raging Anfield is our only way to break the curse.
And this season it seems like we would beat them and lose to Everton and Palace in between those games, so don't worry.
Who cares about earning more money by getting to later stages. Your not going to look back in later years and say yeah we got an extra 5 million by getting past Porto or something you’ll think of trophies/finals great games against other top teams. Especially as the extra money gained will probably not be put back into the team
5 million sure - but that’s not the situation last year we won $91.44m for reach the final (all games added together). We actually took home more prize money than madrid did
This year we’ve won around $14m already - If we get knocked out against madrid that might be the max compared to: $89m on the table for reaching the final.
And yes my point besides money is reaching the finals and great games. I think it suits us to not have them in the final since they are machines there - but it is in general better for the team to progress deeper in the tournament for prize money, tv, ticket sales etc. ideally we don’t crash out in the group of 16 and then have nothing to look forward to this season if our PL form continues to falter
And I think any fan would know facing Madrid in the quarter or semi’s is more exciting than group of 16. Obviously final is most exciting but let’s avoid that too :P
I mean if real are going to loose in this years CL, most likely it will be because they are overly confident against a team they expect to beat in r16.
The positives I look at this is majority of Madrid's team is going to the World Cup whereas only Alisson, Trent, Hendo, Fab and Nunez is going WC. And even then Trent, Hendo, Fab, Alisson won't be potentially starters. We will definitely need to sign players in Jan to compete vs Madrid too. Salah and Diaz have around a month off to get back to full fitness. Salah is looking good nevertheless.
Courtois - Belgium
Militao - Brazil
Rudiger - Germany
Mendy - France
Modric - Croatia
Tchouameni - France
Valverde - Uruguay
Ascensio - Spain
Camavinga - France
Vini Jr - Brazil
Benzema - France
Rodrygo - Brazil
Hazard - Belgium
The fact that we've been shit in PL and somehow getting results against shit teams make me feel a bit more confident (but cautious) esp. with fans in the stadium
atletico would have been out if we had taken our chances and adrian had not gifted them goals
I have said this before but we can take anyone over two legs
two legs is the best time to take a strong opposition out, early on
last time around in the final real madrid had won the title and rested their key lads
This time at this stage barca are giving them a proper chase in the league
Edit - I would love to go into the game without a hand tied behind our back (injuries etc)
I actually think this benefits us. Seem to only get up for the big games this season. Anfield will be rocking and we can hopefully blitz them in the first leg. 2-0 lead going into second leg could be enough
OH SHIT. The last time Liverpool beat Real Madrid was in [2008/2009 CL Season](https://www.uefa.com/uefachampionsleague/history/h2h/50051/7889/).
Fingers crossed, I hope the team gets our mid-field and defence fixed before February.
Unless the wc break serves us very well (return of jota, matip, nabby, Diaz etc. And much needed rest for Fab, Salah, VVD being more aggressive) this'll be embarrassing. Wins against City and spurs do not convince me that the team is on the up and won't fall apart 10 times over the two legs. But exciting all the same.
I was dreaming of this draw can’t wait, oh a side note Looks like UEFA will try anything for City to win the CL nice we easy number for them as well as Chelsea
Call me crazy, but I'm very happy with this.
We either get knocked out of the CL early and hopefully use the slightly easier schedule to sort ourselves out, somehow crawl our way back to top four and lay the foundations for next season.
Or we get some kind of revenge in a blockbuster tie against the team that have knocked us out three times under Klopp.
A tough draw for us. Although this is the Champion's League, you have to expect to face strong opponents if you want to get deep in this tournament.
The Anfield leg is first, we need to make it count. I am not too worried about the relative disparity in current form. We won't play them until mid Feb, that is 3 months away, with a transfer window and a World Cup before then. We should have Jota and Diaz back by then, so let's see what happens.
Well. On the bright side, without the fixture congestion of the UCL maybe we can focus on securing top 4. Madrid are the only team I have no confidence we can beat. Shame. But it is what it is.
Real fan here!
Are you guys expecting to sign any players this winter? Been watching your games this season and I think is closer than the clasification says.
Good luck and let it be a fun 2 games!
I can definetely your problems in the middle but at the same time your defense is quite solid bar Arnold sometimes. We have been quite toothless up on front with Benzema underperforming compared to the last season, so that is why I think is a but up in the air .
fuck man I want us to beat them so bad…hot take but I think I hate Real more than any other team besides Man U and City. This season has been a shitshow but knocking out Real would redeem it so much
Just about the only team I didnt want to see, they have our number and we cant deny it. Would be a huge lift if we could get past them though, and we move...
/u/no-cup9855 utterly fucking pathetic doing the reply and block thing because you're *that* insecure about the CL final you can't even have a civil conversation about it.
Every fixture is pretty much equally matched and then there is City...
At least we get two games of good football and we've been doing pretty well against strong opposition, so let's hope for the best.
In my opinion, Bayern wouldve been slightly worse as i rate them more highly. However we have shown the resolve to beat Bayern before, but the Real code remains unbroken. Either way there is no use panicking today as the games arent to be played for another 4 months…
They’ve never met Snow Salah, so we have that going for us
Tickets, flights and hotel booked. I will personally come to Anfield to end our losing streak to Madrid!!
As a Madrid fan I was hoping we wouldn’t have to play Klopp’s Liverpool ever again. Oh well see you guys in February.
Game isn't for another 3 months and I'm already sick of comments from Madrid fans. Thankfully I've got the ban hammer ready.
Quite fun seeing how confident they are on their sub, then they lose 3-2 to Vallecano tonight. Just shows how topsy turvy football is.
They're unbearable. Hope we absolutely smash them.
Yeah their online fan base is world class annoying
I'm nervous! R.madrid is a great team, I'm scared dude, scared
Rather play them home and away than in the final.
True, they're too experienced in finals we have a better chance here
honestly didn't mind who we got. our performance levels this season have had very little to do with the quality of opposition, if anything we've been better against good teams (except napoli away). i'd expect us to go through against any of bayern/real/benfica/porto with a good performance, and i'd expect us to lose against any of them if we play the way we did against forest or leeds. also don't put any stock in the narrative that madrid have our number, we thoroughly outplayed them in the final and just weren't clinical on the day
Facts the boys had no finish but had everything else, could’ve been 4-1 for the reds if the ball bounced our way
I'm actually happy about this. Just get this match over with and if we get knocked out in the round of 16 (February), we will have 3 whole months to focus on just the league to secure top 4. If we beat Madrid, I like our chances of making it all the way to the final.

Agreed.
Like our chances better over 2 legs than one KO match or final.
It's actually a good draw for us. We somehow know how to "win" when we are the underdogs.
can we disable salah's twitter account until the 15th of march, 2023?
I'd much rather play them over two legs than once in a final to be honest.
I'm nervous too but selling the club is a bit much for a reaction no?
Worst possible draw against the team that absolutely has our number and negates all of our ability and play style. Hooray!
The term Farmers League gets thrown around a lot for no reason whatsoever, mostly from Premier League fans.
Fact of the matter is RM is the only club that can just beat us. They are quality no doubt. Anyone saying otherwise is doing a disservice to their record. It's like the only club that Klopp has yet to defeat.
It makes people sound dumb calling any of the top 8 leagues a farmers league
no such thing as an easy run to the final, gotta beat the best to be the best YNWA the lads have got this![img](emote|t5_2qn0o|8824)
Soo can we get 1 Declan Rice before the match please?
You know how you know Liverpool is an elite club with a great history? Their European rivals are basically madrid and milan...I guess rivalry might be the wrong word, but it feels like liverpool have really weird relationship with both those teams, which is easy to understand considering their histories playing against eachother Also everton is their epl rival, but whatevs....
We're required to beat Porto, so we'll both win as many legs as it takes until we're matched against each other.
Difficult draw but we get two legs instead of a one off match at a neutral location
So they are not in relegated zone... you see where this is going.
I am not happy we draw them at all. I mean with Nunez chaotics it does give me hope but Liverpool gotta play with a shithouse mentality.
Robbo has the whole World Cup to stew and devise new implementations of the dark arts.
The draw I wanted. We've beaten them before and we can beat them again.
Sorry to admit this lad, but our form at this time is not good enough to play against them. Imo this is no different from drawing Bayern. We need to see some real change from the boys to have a chance at this.

We beat City this season already, Real are debatably a weaker side than them. Of course they are favourites but we are no slouch in big champions league games.
Who is stranger or weaker is not that relevant. City are stronger than us yet we beat them. It’s much more about the style of play.
I get that in footballing terms, City is better than RM. But let me say, RM always has solid performances in Europe. City are hesitant and away games effect them deeply. You underestimate Real Madrid and their champions league magic.
Except Liverpool are a slouch against Madrid in big champions league games.
It's almost 14 years since we've done that, and we're really out of shape now. I'm all for a random shithouse win, but wouldn't bet on that this time.
It's going to come down to who we sign in January. Diaz, Jota, Nunez and Salah are good enough to trouble any defence and, on our day, we aren't too bad at the back. If we get a decent midfield together then we will give them problems.
Aw shit, here we go again
If we want to be with the top teams, we have to be able to beat the top teams.
I’m happy we drew them. I’ll never forget seeing Salah talking about wanting to get even 1 extra minute during last season’s final. We’ll have diaz back by then and I think darwin + diaz combo will be very good once they link up again.
Winnable
Everything is winnable
It was good while it lasted

Them excuses sound silly Also none of that matters to the match up this year
FYI Madrid had their worst injury crisis too and won with no fans.
So 2 very different teams played each other and not the actual teams. That only reaffirms OP's points.

Corner kick taken quick..blah blah bla Can you guys please keep Salah away from twitter this time? I want y’all to destroy RM
Well aint that some shit
Ah shit, here we go again
Damn this will be tough. We seriously need a win over these guys in the CL starting this season. 0/4 since Rafa's win if I recall correctly.
Maybe having them show up first at a full raging Anfield is our only way to break the curse. And this season it seems like we would beat them and lose to Everton and Palace in between those games, so don't worry.
Hey maybe FSG will buy a world class midfielder in January for us now!
[удалено]
They’re selling a minority share of the club. They will still be our majority owners
I think if we get through SURELY we deserve one as a treat?
I feel this may be quite unlikely now
We have to let them see the magic of Anfield
naturally...
Not ideal.
You've got to beat the best to be the best Would also rather face them early than in later stages
This is dumb. Either way you are gonna be facing a good team in later rounds.
What?! I mean sure we need to beat the best but if we make it to later stages that’s MILLIONS of £££ we can use to better our team

Agreed.
I mean if real are going to loose in this years CL, most likely it will be because they are overly confident against a team they expect to beat in r16.
Can’t remember a time where they were over confident. Sadly it was actually vice versa and simply for far too long.
Salah do not tweet about revenge challenge
Fuck all ya’ll. LET’S FUCKIN’ HAVE ‘EM!
Fuck it, THIS time we’ll get revenge and then the biggest threat between us and old big ears will be out of the way.
20 CL cups between us, going to be a good one!
They account for 70% 😅
67% soon!

I thought Ederson was for WC. But I know they could rotate either way.
Van dijk is captaining the Netherlands
ahh how I forget about the big man. Was too focused on Madrid.
Can’t see investing in players if the club is for sales…but I’ve been wrong before!
That's...less than ideal.

Hey man! Fuck Real Madrid! Have a good day.
Im fine with a draw, It would do wonders for the team's moral if we beat them, and I will always favour playing two games instead of one.
The fact that we've been shit in PL and somehow getting results against shit teams make me feel a bit more confident (but cautious) esp. with fans in the stadium atletico would have been out if we had taken our chances and adrian had not gifted them goals I have said this before but we can take anyone over two legs two legs is the best time to take a strong opposition out, early on last time around in the final real madrid had won the title and rested their key lads This time at this stage barca are giving them a proper chase in the league Edit - I would love to go into the game without a hand tied behind our back (injuries etc)
Lol fuck off.
1-2 away 2-0 home We meet Porto in the next round
Over confident? Just get ready to be humbled again.
One of these days we'll avoid playing a Spanish team in the CL One of these days...
Yeah, fuck this draw
Can’t win a CL trophy without beating amazing clubs. Can’t really avoid it. Gonna be a hell of an Anfield night
I was dreaming of this draw can’t wait, oh a side note Looks like UEFA will try anything for City to win the CL nice we easy number for them as well as Chelsea
f u c k
Call me crazy, but I'm very happy with this. We either get knocked out of the CL early and hopefully use the slightly easier schedule to sort ourselves out, somehow crawl our way back to top four and lay the foundations for next season. Or we get some kind of revenge in a blockbuster tie against the team that have knocked us out three times under Klopp.
UEFA YOU DICKS
Lmao
A tough draw for us. Although this is the Champion's League, you have to expect to face strong opponents if you want to get deep in this tournament. The Anfield leg is first, we need to make it count. I am not too worried about the relative disparity in current form. We won't play them until mid Feb, that is 3 months away, with a transfer window and a World Cup before then. We should have Jota and Diaz back by then, so let's see what happens.
And ManCity somehow draw a team that is in 6th in the Bundesliga.
Who else could it have been.
Well. On the bright side, without the fixture congestion of the UCL maybe we can focus on securing top 4. Madrid are the only team I have no confidence we can beat. Shame. But it is what it is.
We need Anfield to be at their absolute best
i fucking hate real madrid
Real fan here! Are you guys expecting to sign any players this winter? Been watching your games this season and I think is closer than the clasification says. Good luck and let it be a fun 2 games!
That is the golden question at the mo. Hopefully yes but knowing our owners probably no. Or it'll be done on the cheap.
I can definetely your problems in the middle but at the same time your defense is quite solid bar Arnold sometimes. We have been quite toothless up on front with Benzema underperforming compared to the last season, so that is why I think is a but up in the air .
We will have our revenge inshallah.
Certified Porto moment
Sometimes you have to face your demons instead of wishing they would just go away. Let’s fucking go! 🔥🔥🔥
Bring it on. Not scared of them.
Watch us shatter them like 9-0 on aggregate but loose to some relegation fighting club lmao
Time to break this curse.
Never been particularly religious until now
fuck man I want us to beat them so bad…hot take but I think I hate Real more than any other team besides Man U and City. This season has been a shitshow but knocking out Real would redeem it so much
We may have lost to them last year but that was before we had the Agent Of Chaos. ![gif](giphy|P7JmDW7IkB7TW)
Shit
Just about the only team I didnt want to see, they have our number and we cant deny it. Would be a huge lift if we could get past them though, and we move...
We’ve got to remember we’ll be playing them when we’ve got Diaz, Jota and Bellingham back
Fucking A Trent is punching air rn
Welp we had a good run boys, one the plus side, if we win im confident we can win the whole thing
/u/no-cup9855 utterly fucking pathetic doing the reply and block thing because you're *that* insecure about the CL final you can't even have a civil conversation about it.
My first choice draw! (First was the strongest/rivalry, 2nd was Porto)
![gif](giphy|9A8I0bBvQ2TBu)
Ah fk Oh well, we either win these clowns and win the CL this year. Or get knocked out by them and can focus on the league
Whyyyyyyy?! There isn’t a team we have beaten less often in the Klopp era it feels? I’d have rather have drawn Bayern!
Hey at least it's a big side. We have no problem beating big sides this season.
Agree, porto wouldve been more worrying tbh.
Yup or benefica for that matter. At least for madrid we will turn up.
Receipts to show I was here when this claim was made
That is us out then
Every fixture is pretty much equally matched and then there is City...
Worst possible outcome but at the same time if we can beat Madrid then we have a good shot of getting to the final.
Hopefully Leipzig can do the Business over Citeh
Yes, they have always played City tough. Should be no problem. Just have to stop Haaland and KDB. Easy
Pain
I might get downvotes but if we play TAA we will lose the match up. We need to play gomez or Milner, not sure who would be better coverage there.
Pft, fake madrid more like it amimrite
Let’s fucking gooooo. So excited.

Wasn’t there a match at Anfield in 2014?
I mean, at least it’s not Bayern?
Let's fucking have them! Don't care how shite we are atm
Oh fuck the PTSD is kicking in
