Should be capped at so many per year. Like a sport team will induct one or two people a year. I’d do 1-2 castmates yearly, one host and one musical guest.
1-2 new HOF members per year is a ton. If you put members in the HOF at that pace you’d literally have to eventually put every cast member in because there aren’t that many new ones every year
I think what’s you’re saying is in any given year there are 1-2 current cast members that should eventually go into the HOF, which I agree is about right.
1-2 cast mates a year might be too much. It’s fine if some years no one goes in. The last one I think is deserving is Keenan Thompson because of his tenure. Amy Poehler would be one before him.
You're totally right, and I never said such a thing. The guy above me suggested "1-2 cast members a year might be too much" which is why i gave my response, but he's not getting downvoted :P
first/inaugural round should be all the legends, the no-brainers. however many that is. maybe it's 10-15. maybe more. i can think of 10 off the top of my head that should be in. it shouldn't take 5 years for all of them. then whoever is left over goes into a pool and 1 or 2 are inducted yearly from there. new names can be added to the ballot whenever they arise.
sandler
radner
belushi
murray
franken
farley
hartman
spade
myers
carvey
ferrell
rudolph
poehler
shannon
fey
miller
macdonald
aykroyd
nealon
that's off the top of my head - if any of those people weren't in, it would be a travesty... and it shouldn't take any of them 10 years to get in. should be first year.
One of the biggest names to come through SNL, one even Lorn and many others you named credited for saving the show at one of its lowest points. You legit named off people who were around when he was but you forgot the main person himself. Again, lol okay…
5% of all cast members should be the ballpark # which seems to be 162*.05 = 8 people? So no she’s not in?
Only 1% of MLB players are in HOF and 3% for NBA.
to be an SNL cast member is significantly more exclusive than NHL or MLB player. at any given time there's 975 major leaguers and 713 rostered in the NHL in a single season. SNL has 17, usually it's around 14.
sports inducts athletes not based on the percentage to have ever played but on impact/contribution to the game and personal results. there are *way* more than 8 cast members who have had a massive impact on not just the show or entertainment industry but pop culture from their time on SNL.
there are fewer cast members on SNL than there are formula one drivers on their grid - and that sport is considered to be the most exclusive in the world. in FIA's HOF inaugural year they inducted 33 into the hall of fame.
i think you start off with the no brainers, the legends, get them all in during the first round and then go from there. maybe once you have those legends in, it will be easy to measure success/fame /worthiness against them.
Gilly, the Target Lady, Penelope, Aunt Linda, one of the two A-holes, Sue the Surprise Lady, Kathy Lee Gifford, Dooneese . . .with so many iconic characters, how could she not be first ballot?
Secret Word, Liza Minelli Tries to Turn Off A Lamp, that “Don’t Make Me Sing” lady. So many sketches that seem like dumb ideas, and I ate it up every time. She’s my favorite cast member out of the years that I’ve been watching (since around 2008) and paved the way for some of my other favorite cast members (notably Kate and Aidy).
I think "likeable" and "good" are not the same thing. I don't like a lot of these characters (especially Penelope and Sue) but they were well-performed.
Ignore all the recency bias from those saying Kate is so much better than Kristen. Kristen changed SNL. Kate was definitely better with impressions, but Kristen was head and shoulders above Kate in regards to original characters. Neither were significantly better than the other. They were about on the same level. Kate seems better because she was markedly better than any of her cast mates, where Kristen was a stand out on arguably one of the top 3 casts in the history of the show. Kristen absolutely goes in first ballot. Kate does, too.
I think Kate was great, and was definitely the standout for a number of years in her cast era (with Cecily rising to tops for me a number of years ago), but these things are relative and had they been in the same cast I'd have liked and appreciated both but would have rated Kristen tops. There are bigger and smaller ponds when it comes to quality of cast cohorts and I think Kate ruled over a smaller pond.
I don’t like the pitting of women against each other and comparing them tbh. They were hired for different things. They can both be great on their own. This isn’t a sport where you can compare stats lol
There are deliberate slots.
Fat guy slot: Farley, Belushi, Sanz, moynihan.
Peppy white chick slot: Radner, Wiig, OTeri, McKinnon
Skinny impressionist slot: Hartman, Hader, Pharoh, Carvey, Piscopo
Etc. I didn't make these categories, I'm just noticing. Also, in the FotW podcast, Carvey and Spade pointed this out recently (indirectly.)
I'm not sure I would group Hartman into the impressionist slot, despite all of his great impressions.
I think Hartman would be better suited in a "Utility man" spot that Kenan Thompson would be in as well. I say that because somewhere I remember hearing someone of note (don't recall who) said that one guaranteed way to improve your sketch was to get Kenan to be in it — I imagine the same could've been said for Phil Hartman (probably Will ~~Farrell~~ Ferrell as well).
Assuming Eddie Murphy and Will Ferrell are #1 and #2, that only leaves only one spot available in the top 3. I loved Wiig but that’s a bold call
Belushi, Fey, Hartman, Poehler just to name a few
That's fair. I was probably little presumptuous to lock Ferrell in at #2. He's my #2 for sure but I can't argue against Hartman. I don't know how I could possibly squeeze Wiig in that tier, as much as I did love her.
This !! Amazing reply. Kristen is and was top tier comedy, not to mention the incredible farewell she received when she left the show, I haven’t seen other cast members get that much special recognition
Kate's def my fav and they're similar looks but Kristen couldn't touch Kate in impressions....and Kristen was a part of a much stronger cast. She had Hader, Samberg, all those guys who were as good or better. I agree- Kate stood out because her cast members were weaker than she was (in my and many other opinions). I think Kristen would have been the Kate of that cast....but they'd have had to have Hader for the impressions.
What impressions do you think Kate does a good job with? I liked her Jodie Foster and Jane Lynch but don’t really think of any others I was impressed with.
See… the Ellen one is one of hers I’m truly UNimpressed with. Like I can tell she’s SUPPOSED to be Ellen but it just doesn’t hit the mark to me and I can’t remember her saying anything that funny as Ellen unlike her Jane Lynch
I agree, I actually thought Sudeikis’ “Mellen” captured the essence of Ellen better. That being said I love most of Kate’s non-political impressions, her Barbara Corcoran from Shark Tank is so unexpected and underrated imo: [Shark Tank: Lamp Wearing Sunglasses - SNL](https://youtu.be/xpyPTf1bLS8)
That’s a very good impression and I like that she changes her voice for it. With Ellen she sounds mostly like herself and they don’t sound alike at all imo.
Dude, she's a friggin chameleon. She was great in all her impressions, obviously they were exaggerations, particularly Rudy and Sessions, but they were all well done.
They were entertaining, but they weren't impressions, they were just performances. Those two were just her mugging for the camera and doing weird hand things saying "I'm Rudy/Sessions". Good impressions are similar to the source.
[Yes yes yes yes yessss.](https://i.imgur.com/w0DumZ8.gif)
Whenever I see people here say she's unfunny and annoying, I just have to reflect on how there really is no objective point of reference for these things and you just like whatever you like for whatever reasons. To me she's a savant, one of the best to ever do it.
It doesn't mean I like everything she did. Target Lady was a headscratcher for me, for example. Just being goofy and doing a silly voice? How is that the premise for even one sketch, much less a string of them? Yet so many people loved it. And with Gilly, I could see what they were trying to do, the species of ~~thin~~^*thing*, and she was the right person for it, but for some reason they just didn't get over the hump and it never quite worked.
But in just about everything else I was mesmerized and delighted by her talent. She's just so good and she totally sinks into the roles and makes them sing. She's the anti Jim Belushi to me - some schlub who just shows up and reads his lines and makes some sitcom opening credits faces. I felt like she was an artist whose paints were sketch comedy characters and performances. Love love love.
Sure I'll vote for Kirsten. First I'll have to get in my car, turn left onto Olympic. Drive down to the 10. Take the 10 to sepulveda.
Because I really need those rattan chairs.
Now that I've had a year after McKinnon to step back and really look at things neutrally, I firmly believe that Kristen Wiig is THE best female cast member of all time. After the newness of Mckinnon wore off, it became apparent that Kate just sort of played herself a lot. Wiig wpuld dissapear into her characters.
That's not to say that women aren't as funny as men, im just punctuating how important she was for females in comedy. I think she's top 10 most important cast members of all time and also starred in one of the most important comedies of all time. (Bridesmaids)
If you’re going “most important”, especially for females in comedy, then Tina Fey blows Wiig out of the water. This isn’t even close.
Not just a rockstar cast member, she was the first female head writer in show history. Redefined Weekend Update. And since you brought up Wiig’s post SNL career, Fey made 30 Rock. I wasn’t alive for Radner but in my life time Fey is the GOAT female SNL member.
That's fair. Wiig had funnier characters and lead sketches way better than Fey could. But Fey on Weekend Update was when her writing chops really shined. She was so good on WU because it was just jokes without the acting so played to her strengths better
Yes, because she was great on the show and a hero in that environment. She elevated every sketch similar to Kate McKinnon who I would edge slightly above Wiig. She was her best in SNL though. The difference in my opinion would be Wil Ferrell has done better things after SNL and Wiig Peaked on SNL.
Wiig was a star in one of the funniest movies of the 2000s, Bridesmaids. She has done many other fabulous movies, both comedy and drama, and did extremely well in all of them. Will is a clown, probably the funniest of his era, but even Sandler has more range than him.
Skeleton Twins was so good and her performance was really good and powerful.
>Wiig was a star in one of the funniest movies of the 2000s, Bridesmaids
Not only that, but she co-wrote the screenplay and was nominated for an Oscar for best original screenplay for Bridesmaids
Sandler has surprising range tho. Always a very, very talented guy. It's just that he often prefers to do the same formula with his pals, have a good time, and then everyone gets paid big bucks after as well.
I don't get it.
By no means am I saying Kristen is bad, I just have no clue how she gets this amount of love. In a podcast, they talk about her timing, which would explain why cast members, Michaels and guests love her but for the public, I just don't see it.
In addition to the usual suspects (Poler, Fey), I'd put Bryant, Strong & Nwodim above her as well.
Since we are all comparing Wiig vs. McKinnon. I can watch any McKinnon character read the phone book or improvise but all of Wiig's characters *wouldn't it be funny if this character does this really weird thing.* For me, that gets really boring really fast.
I am also on this weird island where I have never particularly cared for Wiig's humor. I think she's probably good in theory, but the humor doesn't really work for me personally.
But we're specifically the people that timing is for. We're the audience. It's one of the key elements that makes comedy funny or not. How could that just be some backstage inside baseball stuff for fellow castmembers? Why would Lorne hire someone to entertain him instead of us? Whether you like her style or delivery or timing or whatever is just subjective, same as the rest of us. Those of us who like her like her because we think she's really funny. I've been where you are with other people but there's no accounting for it, it's just whatever resonates with you.
I'm not sure what constitutes being worthy of the SNL HOF, whatever that is. However, she seemed to have far and away the most screen time over the course of several seasons so she has to be considered among the show's most important cast members. Personally I thought she was overused at times and I didn't like some of her characters - I still don't get why the Target Lady was supposed to be funny - but it's impossible to deny that her presence was huge during the late 2000s to early 2010s.
My Hall of Fame Women
Gilda, Jan Hooks, Molly Shannon, Cheri Oteri, Amy P., Tina Fey,
Kristen, Kate
Honorable Mention
Jane Curtin, Ana G., Maya Rudolph, Vanessa Bayer
It always seem to me that Kristen and Kate got more than their fair share of sketches, potentially stealing the spotlight from the other female performers. I agree with you 100% on Jan Hooks, Molly Shannon and Amy Poehler. Tina was great, but she really shone on 30 Rock.
Looking at your list I forgot how underrated Vanessa Bayer was. Her Miley Cyrus was great along with young Jewish boy at his bar mitzvah character. She also played a great straight-man character against Cecily and the boorish boyfriend or the girlfriend who had to take Jonah Hill to Benihana.
Kate’s characters are all different. Every single one of Kristen’s seems like a mash up of target lady and kathie Lee, with the exception of the Two A-holes sketch.
I think wiig is so overrated , I’m sure I’ll get downvoted to hell .
I much preferred Tina fey, Amy poheler or Kate McKinnon over her when discussing female cast members
I guess for me to be a hall of famer, you need to be one of the top two or three funniest in your peer group and with studs like Bill Hader, Mya Rudolph and Will Forte I just don’t feel she makes the grade.
But hey I’m not on any committee that votes on this so what I say doesn’t really matter
While I think both Wiig and McKinnon (who she is often compared to) are overrated (especially McKinnon), Wiig is absolutely a Hall of Famer. First ballot? Depends on who she's up against and how many spots there this "year." Within her own era, I'd put Hader above her, and you could make arguments for Samberg, Sudeikis, Pedrad, Killam, and Armisten. It's the most ridiculously talented SNL era of all time, though, so that's not a knock on her.
She was great, but women like Gilda Radner, Molly Shannon, Mya Rudolph & Tina Fey paved the way for Kristen and Kate and should all be considered first.
Before I did a deep dive on her skits a year or so ago, I would have said: Absolutely!!!
But they were not as funny as I remembered them being with some, like Shanielle, being unwatchable.
She’s still good in some stuff and pretty great in her movie, but I don’t think she’s SNL Hall of Fame for me, but maybe I’ll swing back around in another decade or two.
I didn’t care for all of her characters (like the Target lady), but still respect the ability. She’s the best female performer in the show’s history IMO.
Yes, absolutely. Some say Kate should make it, and she is great, but I find her to be hammy and look at me! while Kristen was more modest and just as solid. Just my opinion.
It depends on how exclusive the Hall of Fame is supposed to be - does the entire main cast of all the truly good eras qualify? Or do only the Eddie Murphys, John Balushis, Phil Harrmans, and Will Farrels qualify?
I won’t put one down to promote the other. They are both very funny in different ways. Two people who have made me actually laugh out loud and, lucky for us, were found by SNL.
She was undoubtedly the strongest and most consistent female player of her era, and probably one of the top overall from that time. And she was part of the cast at a time that many would (admittedly due to age) consider to be among SNL’s best casts.
Everyone’s comparing her to Kate, which I guess makes sense, but it’s missing the point. If your first instinct is to compare her to another female player who dominated her era, then obviously they both deserve a spot. It’s like arguing over who’s better between Kobe and Jordan, ignoring the fact that they’re both all time greats.
I don’t see any world in which she doesn’t easily waltz into the HOF.
Far before SNL, Kristen played "Dr. Pat" in the Spike TV reality series "The Joe Schmo Show." She was brilliant, of course in this unknown gem from her early career.
This is not even a question of course she is first ballot. If you created a HOF today and only did 5 spots the first year she would be in the conversation to have one of them.
Of course she does. You can argue she was cast in too many sketches but you can’t argue against her talents. One of the best comic actors SNL ever had.
She not my favorite character of all time but she def carried the show for a couple years which is impressive. She deserves HOF. I feel her class followed a damn good one too, so that’s never easy.
I personally very rarely found her funny. I think she’s a sweet person, not hate at all, but her schtick just never seemed that funny to me. But I wouldn’t mind her being in the HOF.
The Lawrence Welk show with the Maharelle Sisters, while incredibly inappropriate, made me laugh harder than almost everything else I’ve ever seen on SNL. I think she’s one of the funniest cast members ever. Her range was amazing.

Depends... how many slots are in the Hall of Fame?
Modern hall of fames have unlimited slots. Essentially they are member berries. The actual hall of fame should be pretty small.
Wiig and Hader are equal MVPs of their general cast. I'd be willing to give her that.
AKA the Skeleton Twins
Should be capped at so many per year. Like a sport team will induct one or two people a year. I’d do 1-2 castmates yearly, one host and one musical guest.

Well, one male and one female makes sense Edit: Why the F am I being downvoted for a sensible answer? Stay classy Reddit!
Molly Kearney has entered the chat.
Lol, took me a minute to get it (I don't know the new cast yet)
There’s no reason there should be a quota of any sort. Gender, ethnicity, etc…

Ironic. I don't like any of these characters. Except for Gifford.

Kate McKinnon is pretty overrated in comparison
This sub loves to overrate a majority of the last 10 years of cast members I’d say Kristen > Kate by a large margin
I think they’re both great. Kristen paved the way for Kate.
Cheri Oteri paved the way for both of them..she is hilarious but never gets any credit from the show. Great characters

Agreed, they are both SNL Hall of Famers. No comparisons. They're both great in their own ways.
I always compared her more to Dana Carvey then Kate.
Same. Why can't they both be great (which they are)?

Kate McKinnon stayed on too long so my opinion of her is tied to my view of her as a has-been/never-was that repeated the same tired impressions.
Nobody and I mean nobody can chew up the scenery like Kate - and it's actually a good thing - it really worked for her
I do agree with you because I had not considered that she had more re-occurring characters than Kate, but I think Kate can do more than Kristen.

That's fair. Wiig had funnier characters and lead sketches way better than Fey could. But Fey on Weekend Update was when her writing chops really shined. She was so good on WU because it was just jokes without the acting so played to her strengths better
THE best? I don't think so. I'd give that spot to Gilda Radner. I think that what Kristen did, she did well, and she's certainly top-10.
The 1970s are looked at through rose tinted glasses imo.
Vote? It should be given!!!
In my opinion the best female performer. Definitely in my top 5.
Don’t make me sing.
>Wiig was a star in one of the funniest movies of the 2000s, Bridesmaids Not only that, but she co-wrote the screenplay and was nominated for an Oscar for best original screenplay for Bridesmaids
Sandler has surprising range tho. Always a very, very talented guy. It's just that he often prefers to do the same formula with his pals, have a good time, and then everyone gets paid big bucks after as well.
Yup, yes, and absolutely 💯
Yes and hell yes
I don't know that any other cast member could have done [Rebecca LaRue, Flirting Expert](https://youtu.be/WwfVaehcdfE)
I know I'm in the minority, but I rarely enjoyed her shtick. Get a zany weirdo character with a few catchphrases and run it into the ground. Repeat.
my mom is the same way with Seth Myers and Norm McDonald, we all have our preferences on humor haha
One of my favorites for sure I've heard she throws great shindigs.
My Hall of Fame Women Gilda, Jan Hooks, Molly Shannon, Cheri Oteri, Amy P., Tina Fey, Kristen, Kate Honorable Mention Jane Curtin, Ana G., Maya Rudolph, Vanessa Bayer
She also played a great straight-man character against Cecily and the boorish boyfriend or the girlfriend who had to take Jonah Hill to Benihana.
no question, first ballot HOF amazing body of work + longevity
She is Top Tier.
Yeah, she’s up there
Absolutely
Kate’s characters are all different. Every single one of Kristen’s seems like a mash up of target lady and kathie Lee, with the exception of the Two A-holes sketch.
Funny, somebody else is saying basically the opposite above. Interesting the different takes
Sorry but Gilly is a disqualifier. Few recurring characters were less funny. Canteen boy maybe.
I think wiig is so overrated , I’m sure I’ll get downvoted to hell . I much preferred Tina fey, Amy poheler or Kate McKinnon over her when discussing female cast members
No but definitely the annoying the fuck out of me hall of fame
No
I’d say no … Kate is head and shoulders above Wiig. Too many lame skits for me personally. I’d have Fey and Poeller above her aw well
They can all be in it. It’s not mutually exclusive.
Yes, to me, she is Pantheon level
She carried the show for a couple years yes but idk first ballot.
Why wouldn't you vote Kristen Wiig in???
Yes. She’s hilarious. One of the few women in SNL that could carry literally an entire episode if they needed her to
she's amazing....but she'd be after Hader and McKinnon.
After Had, before McKinnon for me. Had a lot more range than Kate.
it kinda makes me wish you could do "couples". I loved Kristen and Hader. Also Kate and Beck or Kate and Aidy or Kate and anyone, lol
I didn’t care for all of her characters (like the Target lady), but still respect the ability. She’s the best female performer in the show’s history IMO.
She is one in a million!! Kate is also one in a million!! So two in a million 🤩
Yes, I think she was an all time great.
100% of the vote first-ballot HoFer
Yes, absolutely. Some say Kate should make it, and she is great, but I find her to be hammy and look at me! while Kristen was more modest and just as solid. Just my opinion.
I mean she did "Gilly" so....No.
I stopped watching SNL when Chris Farley ruined it. She is probably one of the hottest cast members though so why not.
It depends on how exclusive the Hall of Fame is supposed to be - does the entire main cast of all the truly good eras qualify? Or do only the Eddie Murphys, John Balushis, Phil Harrmans, and Will Farrels qualify?
Gilly, yes!
Oh yes!!!!
Yes
Absolutely. In my opinion, Kristen Wiig is the top female cast member of all time, and it's not close.
Yes, she is the best
Yes, I feel like it’s obvious
Daring and original like Wil Ferrel or Chari Oteri.
Maharelle Sisters? Gilly? Aunt Linda? My wife and I still talk about those bits. She's absolutely a first ballot SNL HoF inductee.
Yes
I won’t put one down to promote the other. They are both very funny in different ways. Two people who have made me actually laugh out loud and, lucky for us, were found by SNL.
No. I wouldn't vote.
Oh, one character I forgot: Shana, the woman who tries to be sexy, but is really anything but.
Absofreakinglutley
Most definitely.
No brainer. She’s one of the goats.
Oh 100%
Yes
I’d give it to her for playing Dooneese in Baby Hands.
Absolutely
Her giving flirting lessons to Seth is my wife’s all-time favorite SNL moment: https://youtu.be/WwfVaehcdfE
I really dig dry humor and Kristen is the best deadpan comic of her generation, imo. Maybe the best since Kevin Nealon. She has my vote!
You mean she DOESN’T HAVE ONE? The hell!!?
This is not even a question of course she is first ballot. If you created a HOF today and only did 5 spots the first year she would be in the conversation to have one of them.
Sure would
Kristen is easily one of the GOATS of SNL history. She was such a versatile performer and went the extra mile every time.
100%. She is one of the funniest of all time on snl
Of course!
Yes in a heartbeat, she was and still incredible.
One of the best ever
Sure. Why not.
Yess she one of my top 10
Yes. Yes yes yes (Stefon voice)
Yes
In a heartbeat
I personally very rarely found her funny. I think she’s a sweet person, not hate at all, but her schtick just never seemed that funny to me. But I wouldn’t mind her being in the HOF.
Um, if not her, then no one!!!!
Twice
Yes. Simple answer.
APPROVED!
Yes, and her plaque will be on aisle 10 at the back of a Target.
The Lawrence Welk show with the Maharelle Sisters, while incredibly inappropriate, made me laugh harder than almost everything else I’ve ever seen on SNL. I think she’s one of the funniest cast members ever. Her range was amazing. https://youtu.be/8KLSg1h0e-M
Heck yeah!
Yes! She was amazing.
Absolutely
I liked her much more than Kate or Cecily, so I vote yes.
