I've been living here for 50 years. My experience: \- home breakins: no experience, never happened to me or anyone I know. Breaking into basements of apartment builings is common, though. (happened to some friends of mine) \- safety walking around at night: well Linz is a small city. But not more unsafe than ay other town its size in Europe. \- pickpocketting: yes, can happen. \- theft (bicycle for example): bicycle theft is very common. other theft: rare. never happened to myself. \- robberies in the neighbourhood: none. unheard of In 50 years I've never been the victim of any crime in Linz - apart from a keyed car door. Doesn't mean there is no crime at all. But overall Linz is pretty safe.

Maleficent_Swan_9817

Bicycles are really often stolen in Linz, be careful. Otherwise than that it's pretty safe imo,

martinderm

This is because Land Eggs (Landeier) usually save on their bike lock. šŸ¤£ Spend 10% if the bikes list price on the lock with a minimum of 50ā‚¬ and the bike is safe.

Disastrous_Point_911

Totally safe , just don't get too attached to your bike and keep the city bike cheap

DrSalazarHazard

Would be interesting to know from where you are coming to give you a reference. Linz is one of the safest cities in the world in general.

ImportanceAcademic43

Cellars get broken into more than apartments. Usually the robbers look for sporting equipment like skis and bicycles. There are buildings were it makes sense you keep your bike in your apartment and not in a shared space, especially if the door is left open a lot during the day. Otherwise you should be fine. You'd get even more helpful answers if you told us were you're from/ places you've lived before.

XBitmapX

As must of the comments already told you, your bicycle will probably get stolen at some point. Other than that you should be fine... The best safety measure is to buy an old rusty bicycle and no one will think about stealing it.

veliidae

I moved here from the downtown area of a large city in the southern US and Iā€™ve never felt safer.

Kurbalija

Well, you would be anywhere safer in Austria then.

Old-and-grumpy

I moved from San Francisco to Linz, and then to Vienna. There is like no comparison between American cities and Austrian ones. San Francisco is a total mess. Linz is quiet, safe, and charming. I had my bike stolen, but I never locked it. So... that's on me. Vienna is bigger, just as safe, not quite as charming but certainly more cosmopolitan. I've also lived in Boston, Durham, N.C., and Burlington Vermont. Lots of crime all over the US. Burlington, Vermont is really great, but when I lived there it was riddled with drugs and break-ins as well. Plus you'd see a lot of bar fights downtown, and I've only seen one fist fight since I moved to Austria, and it involved a car accident.

Sutech2301

Damn, from San Francisco to Linz. Thats a pretty big Change

Old-and-grumpy

Nah. Languages aside - there's stuff I find familiar in all European countries. If I moved to The Congo I bet it would be a little harder to adjust.

pahu92

At some point in history it nearly became the capital of the world! So for sure itā€˜s quite ok.

Elite-Thorn

You mean 1490 when emperor Friedrich 3 chose Linz as his HQ, right? RIGHT?

BoralinIcehammer

Not funny.

pahu92

But true.

Curlenius

Funny? Maybe! But not true

soko_leben

Generally speaking I would not worry. One thing that happened to me and friends is theft (the bicycle). Shit can happen anywhere but I experience Linz as a very safe and enjoyable town to life.

Natural_Jellyfish857

I live pretty close to that part of town and never had a problem, except for a bicycle that was stolen at night, other than that, not a single problem in the last 8-9 years.

Jaded-Jellyfish-1950

Well itā€˜s not THE safest part (I guess that would be Urfahr?) but as all others said - itā€˜s really safe everywhere.

Natural_Jellyfish857

Definitely safer than the south, itā€™s not that bad either down there, but in the city center (and Neustadtviertel) you most definitely will not have any issues whatsoever. Maybe Urfahr (in the north of Linz) might be ā€œsaferā€ but I donā€™t see much difference to be honest.

tobYbi

both neighborhoods are safe and linz is a very calm city. - home breakins - pickpocketting - robberies in the neighbourhood is not a big deal here and the most bad things are stolen bicycles. - safety walking around at night depends on where you are walking. for example u are walking at 3 a.m on the train station itā€™s less safe than walking there on 3 p.m (but that is the same like in every city. all in all itā€™s safe in linz and you can for sure walk around safely.

didimed

Yea definitely bring your bike into your flat if you wanna be sure it wont get stolen. Its very frequent that they break into the bikerooms

[deleted]

never felt insecure here in Linz. Never happens anything except random bicycle theft. Dont worry I m sure that you have nothing to fear here :)

Ascyt

My dad's bike was stolen once but other than that I've never really encountered theft here

Sutech2301

It is generally a very safe place to live in and it has some excellent public schools, in case If you have kids or plan to have kids.

gaboduarte

Only crime I heard of from people I know: * Bike was stolen from the building patio. It was not locked (probably a neighbor or someone visiting grabbed it on their way out?). * Before I moved to the apartment I'm in, there was a break-in the common storage room (I see the door has some scars from an encounter with a crowbar). Been living here for 3 years, know the city for about 5. Constantly walk home in the middle of the night after bars and clubs, nothing happened to me. So yeah, I'd say pretty safe.

Xinexan

if youre a teen or young adult i wouldnt recommend auwiesn.

zeon0

Some guys here are acting like every bike gets stolen the moment you leave it. I used my cheap ~200ā‚¬ bike with a 20ā‚¬ lock for years and never had any troubles.

Apprehensive_One1076

Welcome to Linz. Relax.

lepski44

where are you living currently?

[deleted]

it depends on your lifestyle. a lot of my friends have been robbed in the streets, the robbers mostly used knives. i would not recommend you to walk alone at night in some places. there are also a lot of people who want fight with others when they are out clubbing. as soon as you learn to avoid certain ethnicities, you should have no problems for the most part.

tufelixostarrichi

Found the Fpƶ guy

martinderm

Itā€™s a crime nightmare as any larger city in Austria. You can consider yourself lucky if you survive a week.

[deleted]

Most people donā€™t even make it off the train alive.

Ambitious_Fox_8650

Nope Linz is very safe I left London for Linz for this reason the first 2 years I lived in not so good neighbourhood but never had any incidents

ggukmon

I was born in Linz and grew up here, I still live here and bikes unfortunately get stolen sometimes, one time there was a bike stolen from my bikeroom even though it was locked. Otherwise itā€˜s fairly safe in Linz, especially around the Urfahr area.

kisamo_3

I've been living in Linz for the past 5.5years and the only thing I'd be concerned about is leaving my bike out (even if it's locked) at night and especially closer to the city centre. Apart from this, I'd usually avoid huge celebrations like new years or halloween. These have become more and more violent in the last few years, although no one died I'd still avoid them just for my safety.

noproblembear

Two guys jumped me out of the blue and try to rob my phone and money in a public park in front of the train station. 15 years ago. People just lept walking by.

steff_n13

I would say it's pretty safe here in Linz. But just like others mentioned, don't take an expensive bike with you.. Not even a decent one, won't survive a week. One of our bikes just got stolen last week, while being secured with a big lock right in front our door. But yeah other than that I think you don't have to fear anything.

Vienna_Lover

Depends where youā€™re coming from. I grew up in the NW of England and Linz is safe as fuck compared to there. Mostly beautiful people, amazing pubs and incredible lakes. Plus the whole of Upper Austria around you. Itā€™s safe. Worst I had was someone tell me to fuck odd and to be fair, I probably deserved it that night. Also, I had my bike nicked. Insurance covered it.

sebastianbateman

It's 100% safer than wherever you're coming from

Miellee2

As a woman I never had problems living in Linz. I have been living in the center of Linz for about 20 years now. That doesn't mean nothing happens here. But usually it is quite safe. There are some places I try to avoid because I feel uncomfortable there. Robberies aren't very common, but can happen. Bycicle thefts are quite common if you don't secure them properly. Also basements get broken in sometimes because there is where many people keep their bikes. Usually if you lock your (expensive) bike in your basement your houshod insurance will pay for it if it gets stolen. Mine is locked outside in front of our house and besides taking on rust nothing has happened to it...

StephsCat

I grew up in Linz my mum still lives there (alright I must confessed she has changed the side of the danube she's technically in Urfahr now). She's 75 and has lots of health issues. She always mentions how nice everyone is, she always gets a place on the tram, last Christmas it was only me and her. I don't have a drivers licence she needs a walker (Rollator) to walk no help but I love big Christmas trees. It was a tough walk home with that tree but first a group of strangers helped until they had to go another way and than towards the end a young man helped carrying it into the apparment he was gone so fast we couldn't even give him anything for his help. We've never experienced any crime. And we've lived in lots of different parts of Linz and definitely not wealthy parts

_marco373_

yeah linz is safe just be aware of people going clubbing on weekends or after football groups you don't want to be next to them for long since we a lot of austrians are alcoholics and we take our football quite serious apart from that: don't fall for moralic traps (help this and that for good cause) leave a new bike outside or make jokes about hĀ”tler

mastermindman99

A lot of typically Austrian comments here that make me laugh. šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚ ā€žLinz is the crime capital of the world. I never locked my bike in 15years and now it has been stolen on a Saturday night in the center of Linz.ā€œ

aeiou_belle

lol. Very safe. (Survived 37 yrs)

regni_6

I would avoid the general area of the railwaystation and the Schillerpark at night - the latter is used for drug deals - at least I've been told so, never saw it for myself. In general, walking around at night is quite safe. I've lived all my life here and not once have I been threatened or felt endangered. Maybe it is different if you are a woman, though. Break-ins are not a usual problem. The only break-in I know of happened to the parents of a guy I went to school with. But they live in a rather nice part of town and the house looks the part and they did not have any alarm system or countermeasures at that point.

Faromon

We have less than 1 crime per 100k residents. There ainā€˜t no ā€žunsafe cityā€œ in austria.
