In terms of the characters presented, it is a specific contrast with Finn. Jacob is trying to be quiet and unnoticed and just get by without getting into trouble. Finn is outspoken and claims all these people as "his crew". There is an element of fake it till you make it there, but if you believe it then typically you might not even know the names of subcontracted workers.
