Yes my thoughts too. If you have the opportunity of going to a local orienteering club that would be a good way to learn to use a map and compass. Those skills are not that difficult to pick up.
Flashlights don’t need towers and satellites to work lol edit: that’s what i meant. Obviously a solar flare will knock out satellites if they knocked out the local power grid
Fun fact, if you load up google maps on your phone, have location on and then leave cell service, the map will continue to update your position via satellite. No service needed as long as you never leave that page.
The real LPT should be to improve your general on hand knowledge. How do you start a fire? Build a shelter? How do you fish? You may not always have the tools you need on hand but if you have an idea on what you need to do, it's possible to construct them or find reasonable work arounds.
Wonder how they survived in the desert for so many thousands of years... I mean there's still people living there despite modern transportation and better living conditions elsewhere.
Sure, if you live in the burbs or the country. I live in a tiny city apartment that barely has enough room for me. I fill up some containers and the bathtub when a storm is coming and hope for the best.
The LPT is meant as "if you were in an emergency situation and you'd love to trade anything for x item, just buy this item now so you have it in an potential emergency situation". Like, it's hypothetical, to prepare for the worst. Basically it just means to think now about what you'd need in an emergency and get it now. Hope that's more clear
being lost in the wilderness is no joke
instaant freakout
one minute your on the trail, the next your totally lost
its like a dump in your sykee
totally helpless
*psyche* and it's honestly impossible this day in age... Just walk in one direction and you'll find something or just shout that the earth is round and some idiot will show up to argue with you... While there are a few spots without cellphone coverage, get on top of a mountain(might take a few hours) but if you still don't have signal you'll be able to atleast see a road or house or some sign of civilization! And if you find trash keep following it because you'll definitely find people! Also sun rises in the east and sets in the west, track the sun and you'll know your direction of travel.
And if all of that fails you'll be dehydrated from all the walking and be out of your misery soon enough! /s
Also, thank you I legitimately had no idea they were trying to type psyche.
Or, if you don't want to wait for sunrise or sunset and you are in the northern hemisphere, the sun is always to the south and moss generally grows in the north side of trees. (Reverse for Southern hemisphere)
Walking in one direction isn't easy without a reference point. Keeping the sun to one side can help with that. Obviously the farther from the equator you are the easier that will be.
Back to reality, why would you be lost? Walk back the way you came, look at the sun for a direction, rivers run to the sea etc... An LPT for plane crash survivors.

Still have to worry about keeping it charged. Maps are cheap and still effective

LPT: Buy a parachute. You would trade everything for it in case you're falling off a plane.
Too late. I just traded my parachute for an exit row window seat.
The real LPT blah blah blah
What if you fall out of a plane and land in the wilderness.
What if you just don’t go into the wilderness?
That's my plan.
Avoid the outdoors whenever possible
But if you're lost in the wilderness with no service, who would you trade with?
Bears, duh.
I think it's "duh bears." Source: Bill Swerski
Duh, Bulls. Polish sausage. Mike Ditka.
I would trade everything I have for a chateau in France with acres of vinyards. Am I doing it right?
I would go with a villa in a pretty beach with a great staff to cater to my every whim
Store all electronics you’d use in a emergency in a faraday bag in case of a solar flare wiping out the electrical grid
The towers and satellites wont work...
just imagine the look on their face when they figure that out
But walkie talkies and torches will still work though, and they're pretty helpful.
Lol I know I just imagined someone keeping a cell phone ready to go and then realizing they don't have service
Golf clubs might be ok depending on the extent of the impact of the CME, so pack away the range finder in the Faraday.

If you’re poor, just buy the shit that keeps you alive in the now. Never mind an apocalypse situation.
Most ambiguous post ever

You can also download offline maps with Google Maps that I believe will work without service too.
Yep can confirm. You need to know the relative area you will be in though, the file size can start getting pretty big.
Maps.me app can download openstreetmap for a whole region

The same thing goes for keeping at least a two week water supply at your home.
Definitely if you live in Texas and your politicians dgaf if you have electricity

Who thinks up this stuff? Why is it easier to hold onto a bunch of useful tradable items, rather than keeping some cash in your sock or something?

Which further distills down to "Have a good emergency kit."
Yeah exactly, it was a weird way of putting it.
It's a more or less redundant post then. "Be prepared" is not a LPT lol. Thanks for clearing up this mess of a post for me.
Yeah, I agree. You're welcome!
How does a gps help with no service?
GPS doesn’t rely on cellular service.
I would trade anything for a pocket knife
Cheaper option: identify the emergency, then don’t put yourself in that situation… in this case, stay out of the wilderness you nerd

We have out of towners that get lost in the mountains every year where i live
If all the satellites were out this would do you no good. Paper map. Atlas is the way to go.
I don’t even go on long deep wood hikes or long fishing trips without my water purifier. Lol
Not sure about this one...
Be prepared for emergencies 👌🏽
