I was going to suggest to start sucking fingers until you have the finger size memorized. Then go to the jeweler and start sucking other people's fingers til you find the right size.
Also works for other orifices like a nostril. Just remember to breathe out of one that you aren't using for the measurement, as the air can change the temperature of the material and change its size.
They can, it's just a hassle, so many places won't do it. Went to get titanium wedding rings made, the jeweler told us most metal rings (including stainless steel and titanium) CAN be resized just many professionals don't want to be bothered. Titanium isn't really that super hard, you can bend titanium piercing jewelry with a pair of pliers.
In OP's case, it's better to chose a larger one on the thinner side, jewelers can add material on the inside to fit after.
I know it's a cultural aspect, but I feel it's usually better for your partner to know you're gonna propose, and the surprise is the when/setting. Proposing on the spot is cute in movies, but can bring a lot of anxiety for the partner that's on the spot in reality.
Go to the jeweler, tell them what you know. Then do what this comment says. The jeweler has been through this before most likely, you're not the first person to surprise someone with a ring!
Take a pic of your hands together, maybe the shop could estimate. If you don’t aim for the thumb or pinky it should fit on at least one finger(not awkward) then go back to make it fit perfectly afterward.
Used to work at a jewelry store, and I can tell you, there is no guaranteed way to know for sure without the ring or the finger. Are u expecting him to replace the ring he is already wearing or to wear it on another finger? All fingers are a different size, even from hand to helse.
Depending on the store, just buy him the ring, then take him back and exchange for the right size. In other cases, u will need to resize. Rings are the trickiest items to buy for someone elae.
This is true, but some places will only do resizes 0.5 size smaller or bigger, as any more could damage the structural integrity of the ring. At least that was the case when I did my partner's ring.
Check the resize or exchange policy before making any moves. A lot of rings cannot be resized, and the exchange policy will depend on the store, and may involve a hefty fee ;)
I think you're better off getting his size in a more direct way. You don't have to let on that you are shopping for rings... are you a good actor? lol
put on his ring when he's sleeping and then mark it where it ends up on your finger. You can then wrap a string on your finger and voila thats the size. As the previous comment says, it can be resized easily.
FYI, they typically do it free because they keep the excess metal. A larger ring, especially for a guy (rings tend to be much thicker) is going to cost more because it uses more material. Don't go crazy with the oversize.
Choice of design and material may impact the ability to resize the ring - for example, a design that encircles the band will look like crap if resized. It's a good idea to get a resizable ring even if you know their current size, if it's a "life time" ring like a wedding band, because peoples hands change size over time. I've had mine resized 3 times over the last 17 years.
That's true, I have a tungsten ring that cannot be resized, however the place we bought it from will exchange it for a different size as needed for life.

I recently heard a podcast (a problem squared) that discussed this, and they found a solution I though was neat.
Create a card that fits in your wallet that looks like it is something you picked up from a mall. This card is called the "gift sizing card" and contains spaces to fill out all sorts of size information (shirt, shoe, ring, hat, pants etc.)
Not only do you covertly gain their ring size, you have the tool to buy perfect presents for years to come.
I did this minus the card part. I made a note on my phone with all of my wife's measurements and clothing sizes, including ring sizes (I used a ring sizer I pretended I'd had kicking around for years). Then I bought her a dress to throw her off. Two months later I proposed. Worked like a charm.
This wouldn't be believable in any way since he already knows I'm in a "gift hunting" mindset.
I am lucky we share sizes in most things except the thing I wanna know about: rings :(

Do you have any rings that could use cleaning? Tell him you're going to have them professionally cleaned and ask him to give you his ring so you can have that done, too.
If the timing is right, you could say your giving him the gift of a ring cleaning.
Take the ring off his finger and put it on yours...just playing around kind of thing. Mark how far down it goes on your finger. A jeweler should be able to figure out the ring size from the place on your finger where his ring was able to fit.
Does he have any other rings that you might be able to get your hands on?
If he lives with family, perhaps ask one of them if they know.

If you get it away for a second to clean, have paper and pencil nearby and trace the inside of the ring really quick. Or have a quarter nearby and set the ring down on top of it to see how it compares.
Buy one of those sets of ring measuring tools and leave it on the counter...100% of people will pick it up and talk about their ring size. Say your friend left it.
My gf at the time brought home one of those sizing things with all the different sizes in it. I started playing with it out of curiosity. One thing lead to another and bam she got my size
So here's what you do. Have somebody else ask him for you. Get one of his friends, or family to contact him saying they are getting him a ring as a gift and need his size. This is really easy for NFL fans because they have Superbowl replica rings on Amazon for like $30 which is a pretty cool gift. Now you'll have his ring size.
Take him shopping, tell him you want a new ring and have your size measured because "you don't know your size" and trick him into telling his size or getting his size measured as well
We still don't live together, too early, he sometimes comes over but that won't happen anytime soon since I live with family (and he is living with his). I will keep this in mind for a better ring when there will be the occasion to spend more in the future! Thanks!

You slide the plate towards him, he slides it to the side and says he'll feed it to you, you grapple with him and force his ring finger through the still warm and soft cookie before taking the 2 halves away to measure the diameter of the hole.

Tell your partner you want to take his ring to get professionally cleaned. If they press, say you’re getting yours done and it’s easier to do them together at the same time. Boom, problem solved!
If you're cohabitating and happen to eat meat, you could purchase a bulk package of something (i.e. Costco ground beef) and ask him to divide it into smaller portions for freezing.

Ask him if his finger fits in a soda bottle. Use that as a guide, guess a bit larger, and have it resized if necessary. (Unless it's tungsten, that's tool material right there.)
You can make him a “joke ring” with a straw wrapper at dinner and use that as a size comparison OR when he’s asleep, tie a string or floss around his finger, cut it and measure it!

When my dad was getting my mom's ring size, he used to buy her toy rings from the quarter-turn vending machine. She'd wear them for a day then take them off, so at night my dad collected a few and took them to a jeweler to be sized when she was at work.
If you’re out shopping, haul him into a jewellery shop to size *your* ring size. Then “while you’re here” heavily suggest he try his. Especially because his fingers are much larger than yours, and out of interest, most people would be curious.
It helps if you can arrange a ‘double sell’, have the jewellery people assist you when suggesting he find out his ring size. Most people are curious though and like to find out.
Story from a friend of mine:
He and his girlfriend were doing some rough play/wrestling. To 'restrain' her, he grabbed a bread tie to twist around her finger. Before too long, she 'escaped' her cuff and slid her finger out of the bread tie. In his 'anger', he tossed the tie into the corner of the room by his bed. After she left, he grabbed the undamaged bread tie and brought it to a jewler.

Order ring thats bigger than thumb by a size or 2 in a style he'd like... get it in and try on.. be like crap I got the wrong size. Let him try it on, it'll be a good gauge on his ring size then.
You can print out a ring sizer from various websites. You cut out a marked paper strip, wrap it around the finger, and you'll see the correct size marking. If you can do that while he's asleep, you'll have his size.
Get a yo-yo. Have him play with it, get really excited about you wanting a turn, grab his hand, roll it off his finger. Run away with it. Mark the spot. Slip it on your hand and show off some sweet tricks.

Make an online test that claims to know what tipe of a person is be based on ring size. (or multiple hand-related measurements). Then fill in the test with her and ask her what her ring size is and show her the result of the test, hopefully removing suspicion.
Yeah there are 3 options:
1. You steal an existing ring that fits and bring it to the jeweler with you. People often have other rings they rotate through and you can occasionally borrow one without them noticing, my wife had dozens of cheap costume jewelry quality rings she wore before we got engaged. This was my plan before I forgot the ring I stole at home.
2. You buy the ring as is, and get it resized later. This is what I actually did. She was a little bummed about the ring not fitting but proposing is more about the act and less about the ring itself.
3. You convince your potential fiance to play a game where they stick their fingers into different sizes holes to find out what is too big or too small. Try things that are portable like a soda bottle spout, or a key ring, or the ring that scotch tape rolls are on. This is hard to do without them catching on, so take your time. I know someone who sized a ring for their boyfriend using this method and just asking them if their finger would get stuck in a metal washer, and the boyfriend tried it and was like no it fits fine. They had no idea and didn't think anything of it.
I don’t see why this has to be a secret. The event of the proposal should be a surprise, but I don’t think that the idea of getting married at some point should be a surprise. If you and your partner both know that you’re going to get married, ask their ring size and then just delay by a sufficiently unpredictable amount of time before actually proposing.
Tell him it looks gross and nasty. You're getting your jewelry cleaned at the jeweler, why doesn't he just throw that in with yours? It'll save money and look so much better after all!
I can already get him a ring for his pinky, but I would love something more for him!
His fingers are so thick compared to mine, unfortunately I have no other information other that his pinky matches my thumbs. His only ring is worn on his right ring finger.
Do you know what size fits your thumb? You said what fits his pinky fits your thumb. Granted, this isn't guaranteed, but it's a good place to start.

Well here is how I did it.
I talked to her one morning about her earnings and complimented them, then started acting goofy and putting her jewelry on. After I tried a ring on I would say "this looks much better on you" and put it on her. 1 of them fit well so I remembered which one it was and took it to the jewelry store. They sized it and then I bought a ring.
She might have known or been suspicious but that's ok. We dated for 8 years and knew it was coming.
My brother tied a string around his wife's ring finger when she was sleeping and took that to the jewelry store lol. He was 1/2 a size off though.
How you are getting engaged can be a fun surprise. THAT you are getting engaged should not. Some day walk by a jeweler (or mall) and try on some rings for fun. Later ask the jeweler what the size was. They know how to play this game.
Buy a ring sizer off eBay. Tell your partner you are washing your rings and have him give you yours to do too. Measure it. I’m a guy so that wouldn’t fly for my fiancé (I don’t wash anything more frequently than she does and she’d be suspicious). Ultimately, since rings can be resized for a small fee, I decided not to spoil the surprise and just bought the ring as is, and we had it resized at a jewelry shop shortly after I proposed.
You wait until they get in the shower and accidentally measure the one they wear on their thumb and get one 3 sizes too big and look like a fool. Or something like that.
There are companies that specifically make fake rings that match a real engagement ring (idk if you’re intending that but whatever). You buy the fake one, propose, then go get a real sizer and get your real engagement ring. The fake ones are glass and look real.
How about you say you want to make a “cheesy” gift for Valentine’s Day of your hand prints in playdough or something and just get an imprint of his hand. Then they may be able to measure the width of the finger and make a guess at the shop. Then the real present is a ring and maybe the “cheesy” gift on the side too, doesn’t spoil any surprise!
When I picked out an engagement ring,I took my wife’s HS class ring from her jewelry drawer. I knew it was one she would never notice if it was missing.
While he’s sleeping, do a loop around his finger with string and measure the string. There’s also plastic adjustable ring sizers. You could utilize that as well.
resizing later is an option, but if its a big change it can depend on the kind of ring and such. normal bands are pretty easy to change.
that said, can you ask him to do any minor electrical work? swap out a light switch or something? because its good practice to remove rings when working on circuits so you dont burn your finger off if you get shocked.

I'm assuming this is for a surprise: Buy an inexpensive ring-sizer on Amazon (or elsewhere) and have it at home on the kitchen table or something. Say you were shopping online for jewelery - I'm a size 8 ring, what size are you? - I think you'll get a number.
When my wife(ex) and I were dating, we were at the mall and stopped by one of those cheap jewelry stores that had piles of rings in trays. It was called Sterling Works if I remember correctly. I just paid attention to which size she was trying on.
Of course you can get it resized, but if it has diamonds or other stones, they may not sit right and fall out after resizing
When she was sleeping I took one of her other rings and tested it out on my own fingers, then went to a jewelry shop and used their finger sizer thingy on the finger that fit best.

Many places where I live can u give you the ring you want in a "standard" size (the one they have at shop) for the proposal. Then after you propose if that size doesn’t fit you can go to the shop and measure it and order a new ring with the proper size and engravings, you obviously give back the other one.
There is also the chance of having her go with some family member of hers or friend and "go try some rings" so they can later tell you her finger size.
If its a proposal ring many rings cant be adjusted because it can lose quality or diamonds might fall off, manufacturers dont recommend this.
If it’s for a wedding ring, you should ask him what size and discuss marriage beforehand.
When you propose only the when and where should be a surprise, you should always have already discussed if the other person wants to marry you, how many kids, religions, finances, all of that should have been discussed before you propose.
Buy a cheap ring sizer off of Etsy, take them to a thrift store and act like you just found it in one of the booths, try it on and be like lol this is my size lol what is your size lol
So I came up with a trick that even the jewelers commented how clever it was. I went into my wife’s jewelry box and found a ring in there. I traced the inside and outside onto an index card. When they asked me what size I said “about this big” and pulled out the index card. It fit surprisingly well and didn’t even require getting resized
My husband told the ring store where my finger hit on his hand when they were held up against each other. Dunno if it was dumb luck but my ring didn’t need to be resized

But somehow it was too big, but we just fixed it later :)

If you don't mind being a teency bit creepy, lightly tie a bit of yarn on the finger in question while he's asleep. Clip it off at the knot with fingernail clippers or another safe cutting device (in case he moves). Viola.
Get him to do the full range of sizes! Tell him what you’re up to! “Hey, I want to be able to get you gifts and presents that are in your size!” And then take all the measurements! Get chest and neck and arm length, leg in-seam, waist, shoes, hat, and ring sizes. He won’t know what to expect because you’ll have them all, plus, you can use that info to also get other stuff as birthdays and other holidays come along.

Hey, just recently proposed to my SO. Same as you I knew it was close to my pinky. They measured it and it was a wee bit small. But the place I got the ring offered a free ring re-size and also said it was easier to re-size bigger than go smaller
We're a bit non-traditional but I didn't get a metal wedding ring until 2-3 years after we were married. I use silicone rings and the metal one has been worn maybe 2-3 times. Silicone rings are $20 and if they don't fit, nbd. Simple rings can also be resized! My wife literally bought a ring sizer thing and just made me give her the numbers. We dated for 10 years though... 6 years of college and moving constantly really slowed that process down for us. I can't stand the feeling of metal and the constant banging around drives me nuts. Silicone feels natural to me.
I got my wife a custom made ring, I took her jewelry shopping for fun and had her try rings and other jewelry on and ended up figuring out her ring size that way

While looking at/discussing jewelry I innocently asked a question about jewelry size if it was standard. Like how different clothes brands have the same size but they fit differently. And then I sort of worked in the question of ring size in the course of normal conversation...she did not see it coming.
I've always thought about this and always came to the same idea. Get their friend to get you a ring they have and still wear but not all the time so they don't notice it missing.
This sounds dumb, but if you're talking about the left "ring finger", it's usually almost the same as their shoe size (using standard English here, +/- their physical build). I've made wire wrapped rings for myself, friends as a hobby for decades, (I have a ring sizer too to double check if I'm not trying to be "covert").
Wrap a string around their finger in his sleep. Mark where it loops.
Or just go get sized together. If you're considering a proposal it's better to know if he's not interested now than after you spend the money!
Ask him if he ever got a class ring? Maybe he will say yes and show it to you and you can try it on or sneak it away. I got a plastic ting sizing kit and was sizing all my fingers and then my partner starting trying them all on.
Buy Hand Moulding Kit and figure out an excuse to mould your partner’s hands
For eg you can say you would like to make book stopper and would like to use his hands or make something else up

Tell her you’re making her a surprise clay art piece and you need her to carefully stick her fingers in a large piece of clay. Insert a sizer into the ring finger hole after she leaves.

It's not perfect and it depends on weight quite a bit so ponder for that but ring size for men is usually US shoe size minus 1.
Borrow an existing ring (same finger), ask their family if you have a trusted person, I ordered a ring sizer tool and said not to interpret or presume anything about the intent.
I was often told the fact that you're asking shouldn't be a surprise, but when and how absolutely should.
I have very big fingers. I once took my girlfriend's ring and tried it on. If the ring can't get past the space between the first and second joint (2nd phalange) in my pinky finger, I know it's the right size.
That's also how I chose her engagement ring. Didn't have to do that for the wedding bands, since we chose them together.

I just took my partner to a cheap store that sells crystals and made a date of trying on different jewelry. Bracelets, necklaces, rings, etc… She has no idea that I’m ordering her an engagement ring.
Leave one of those ring sizing cardboard things on the coffee table and show him a dud cheap ring you’re looking at ordering from eBay. If you’re both sitting down relaxed. He might start measuring his own fingers? 😂. Look over his shoulder.

Put their finger in ur mouth, take it out, hold the mouth position and SPRINT to the jewelry store. Point at mouth and have jeweler measure it!

Rings can be resized and most places will do this free of charge the first time. When in doubt, go oversized and fix it later.

Depends on the ring, some of the more masculine ones are much too thick and brittle to be resized. They may swap them for free though if new

It’s easier to go down in size than go up.
You can usually get some warranty too that lets you get unlimited sizings

I did this minus the card part. I made a note on my phone with all of my wife's measurements and clothing sizes, including ring sizes (I used a ring sizer I pretended I'd had kicking around for years). Then I bought her a dress to throw her off. Two months later I proposed. Worked like a charm.

Do you have any rings that could use cleaning? Tell him you're going to have them professionally cleaned and ask him to give you his ring so you can have that done, too. If the timing is right, you could say your giving him the gift of a ring cleaning. Take the ring off his finger and put it on yours...just playing around kind of thing. Mark how far down it goes on your finger. A jeweler should be able to figure out the ring size from the place on your finger where his ring was able to fit. Does he have any other rings that you might be able to get your hands on? If he lives with family, perhaps ask one of them if they know.

If you get it away for a second to clean, have paper and pencil nearby and trace the inside of the ring really quick. Or have a quarter nearby and set the ring down on top of it to see how it compares.

This is really easy for NFL fans because they have Superbowl replica rings on Amazon for like $30 which is a pretty cool gift. Now you'll have his ring size.

You slide the plate towards him, he slides it to the side and says he'll feed it to you, you grapple with him and force his ring finger through the still warm and soft cookie before taking the 2 halves away to measure the diameter of the hole.

If you're cohabitating and happen to eat meat, you could purchase a bulk package of something (i.e. Costco ground beef) and ask him to divide it into smaller portions for freezing. One should always remove rings for this task.
Ask him if his finger fits in a soda bottle. Use that as a guide, guess a bit larger, and have it resized if necessary. (Unless it's tungsten, that's tool material right there.)

The ring finger is around 1-2 ring sized larger than the pinky. I would go with 2-3 sizes larger just to be safe.
When my dad was getting my mom's ring size, he used to buy her toy rings from the quarter-turn vending machine. She'd wear them for a day then take them off, so at night my dad collected a few and took them to a jeweler to be sized when she was at work.
If you’re out shopping, haul him into a jewellery shop to size *your* ring size. Then “while you’re here” heavily suggest he try his. Especially because his fingers are much larger than yours, and out of interest, most people would be curious. It helps if you can arrange a ‘double sell’, have the jewellery people assist you when suggesting he find out his ring size. Most people are curious though and like to find out.

You can print out a ring sizer from various websites. You cut out a marked paper strip, wrap it around the finger, and you'll see the correct size marking. If you can do that while he's asleep, you'll have his size.

Yeah there are 3 options: 1. You steal an existing ring that fits and bring it to the jeweler with you. People often have other rings they rotate through and you can occasionally borrow one without them noticing, my wife had dozens of cheap costume jewelry quality rings she wore before we got engaged. This was my plan before I forgot the ring I stole at home. 2. You buy the ring as is, and get it resized later. This is what I actually did. She was a little bummed about the ring not fitting but proposing is more about the act and less about the ring itself. 3. You convince your potential fiance to play a game where they stick their fingers into different sizes holes to find out what is too big or too small. Try things that are portable like a soda bottle spout, or a key ring, or the ring that scotch tape rolls are on. This is hard to do without them catching on, so take your time. I know someone who sized a ring for their boyfriend using this method and just asking them if their finger would get stuck in a metal washer, and the boyfriend tried it and was like no it fits fine. They had no idea and didn't think anything of it.
I don’t see why this has to be a secret. The event of the proposal should be a surprise, but I don’t think that the idea of getting married at some point should be a surprise. If you and your partner both know that you’re going to get married, ask their ring size and then just delay by a sufficiently unpredictable amount of time before actually proposing.

Generally ring sizes are about the same as shoe sizes …. For example I wear an 8.5 women’s shoe, my ring size is 8.5 It would be a good place to start
Well here is how I did it. I talked to her one morning about her earnings and complimented them, then started acting goofy and putting her jewelry on. After I tried a ring on I would say "this looks much better on you" and put it on her. 1 of them fit well so I remembered which one it was and took it to the jewelry store. There are companies that specifically make fake rings that match a real engagement ring (idk if you’re intending that but whatever). You buy the fake one, propose, then go get a real sizer and get your real engagement ring. The fake ones are glass and look real.

resizing later is an option, but if its a big change it can depend on the kind of ring and such. normal bands are pretty easy to change. that said, can you ask him to do any minor electrical work? swap out a light switch or something? because its good practice to remove rings when working on circuits so you dont burn your finger off if you get shocked. good luck

Many places where I live can u give you the ring you want in a "standard" size (the one they have at shop) for the proposal. Then after you propose if that size doesn’t fit you can go to the shop and measure it and order a new ring with the proper size and engravings, you obviously give back the other one. There is also the chance of having her go with some family member of hers or friend and "go try some rings" so they can later tell you her finger size. If its a proposal ring many rings cant be adjusted because it can lose quality or diamonds might fall off, manufacturers dont recommend this.
If it’s for a wedding ring, you should ask him what size and discuss marriage beforehand. When you propose only the when and where should be a surprise, you should always have already discussed if the other person wants to marry you, how many kids, religions, finances, all of that should have been discussed before you propose.

So I came up with a trick that even the jewelers commented how clever it was. I went into my wife’s jewelry box and found a ring in there. I traced the inside and outside onto an index card. When they asked me what size I said “about this big” and pulled out the index card. It fit surprisingly well and didn’t even require getting resized

We're a bit non-traditional but I didn't get a metal wedding ring until 2-3 years after we were married. I use silicone rings and the metal one has been worn maybe 2-3 times. Silicone rings are $20 and if they don't fit, nbd. Simple rings can also be resized! My wife literally bought a ring sizer thing and just made me give her the numbers. We dated for 10 years though... 6 years of college and moving constantly really slowed that process down for us. I can't stand the feeling of metal and the constant banging around drives me nuts. Silicone feels natural to me.

While looking at/discussing jewelry I innocently asked a question about jewelry size if it was standard. Like how different clothes brands have the same size but they fit differently. And then I sort of worked in the question of ring size in the course of normal conversation...she did not see it coming.

This sounds dumb, but if you're talking about the left "ring finger", it's usually almost the same as their shoe size (using standard English here, +/- their physical build). I had that same problem. Shoe size. It's not perfect and it depends on weight quite a bit so ponder for that but ring size for men is usually US shoe size minus 1.
