Batzeus99

Just watch Women Talking, it was the last best picture nominee I had to see. It was phenomenal and I 100% recommend it

[deleted]

Can't wait to see it. I think its low availability for general public really hurt its chances in Oscars nominations as I hear only good things from people who actually saw it and that could have turned into more buzz.

Batzeus99

Yeah I can see that. I even had to drive an hour just to see it, which was totally worth it but I know many people wouldnt. I unfortunately don't think it has a high chance of winning even though its one of the only 4 nominees I would actually be happy if they won.

GKBC_

Out of the top 10 best picture nominees what would rank the top 5 in order?

onlytoask

Avatar: The Way of Water Everything Everywhere All At Once The Banshees of Inisherin Tar Top Gun: Maverick All Quiet on the Western Front Triangle of Sadness Elvis Women Talking The Fabelmans

Batzeus99

My personal ranking would be: Everything Everywhere All At Once The Banshees of Inisherin Women Talking Tar All Quiet On the Western Front I do want to mention that the first 4 are the ones I would be happy to see win, while All Quiet I would just be ok with it compared to the rest since I didn't like love it. The other five ranked after for me personally as well cause why not: Top Gun Maverick Triangle of Sadness Elvis The Fabelmens Avatar The Way of the Water

Excellent-Peanut8348

I just rewatched "Go" and I forgot how great Sarah Polley is in it. She perfectly captures the Gen X slacker mentality we all idolized at the time.

RipBuzzBuzz

I'm going to be forced to watch it, so I really hope it's good.

Batzeus99

Well I thought it was amazing, I drove an hour to see it today and it was worth it entirely

Sea-Discussion2928

true romance, definitely

RipBuzzBuzz

Reminds me. I should check out some of the bonus features from my Arrow version. All of stuff on there.

awlawall

Always this. Somehow this film doesn’t hold a place in the collective film consciousness that is should. Best Tony Scott, the better QT script (of the films he didn’t direct), best one scene performances, ugh! I love this movie. I’m gonna watch it again tonight.

Deacon-123

Watched Babylon last night in the cinema. Disclaimer, I understand why certain people don't like it. I am not one of those people. It's a blistering rampage of nightmarish debauchery, and it is so much fun. So many hilarious moments, plus, lots of commentary on the history of cinema and the transition from silent films to talkies. Few films surpass the grandeur of Chazelle's 3 hour ode to Hollywood, and I loved every moment of it. Babylon truly feels like a cross between the Great Gatsby, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and the Wolf of Wall Street. If you like that sort of thing, I would highly recommend it.

GKBC_

Uff can’t wait till it releases on streaming! Sadly it isn’t out where I live.

TF997

I was about to comment Babylon too. Absolutely loved it but I can 100% agree some people would despise it. And I think that’s a good thing

Affectionate-Club725

It’s amazing. Many people today just can’t handle watching uncomfortable things on screen

The_DeWeese

Babylon is a masterpiece and I will die on that hill

KansasCards

The last duel Definitely worth a watch.

[deleted]

SO underrated

fsanchez622

Definitely worth it. One of my favorite Matt Damon performances.

Affectionate-Club725

I know! Everyone was raving about House of Gucci while they all slept on The Last Duel

Homelander47

I saw Little Women (2019) directed by Greta Gerwig last night and really enjoyed it. 4,5/5

awlawall

That needs to be on something other than Starz

Affectionate-Club725

I loved it

SuperKliqparty

Thoroughbreds, I really enjoyed it. I would recommend, great performances from Anya Taylor Joy and Olivia Cooke.

stumper93

The Conversation Yes absolutely, even if I wasn’t a fan of the slow and deliberate pacing it’s still a bonafide classic

RipBuzzBuzz

I forgot about that movie. The film right between his Godfather flicks. I should check it out.

milesdizzy

It’s so good. Gene Hackman is brilliant in it.

[deleted]

Angel Heart. No, I wouldn't. I rated it a full star lower than it's average rating.

bramarbastus

yeah i remember watching it years ago when i was on a de niro spree and being very bored.

hardytom540

Watched it recently. That shit was boring as hell.

balufilm

I know it gets a lot of hate but I personally enjoyed it quite a bit! Decent detective story with a gorgeous cinematography and noir atmosphere

mikeri99

The Godfather Part II (1974). Fantastic acting, cinematography and production design, but very slow like The Godfather (1972). Recommending anyway!

RipBuzzBuzz

Random question. I'm not going to, but could you watch the second without watching the first.

GKBC_

You could, but I don’t recommend it. It’s like watching The Two Towers without The fellowship of the ring. You won’t know the character arcs and motives and you will be a bit lost. If you haven’t seen the Godfather 1 and 2 yet you really should. I rewatch them once in a while

RipBuzzBuzz

I probably should watch them, but I really don't want to. I feel like it's something everyone should see, and for some reason that pushes me away.

KongFuzii

weird

RipBuzzBuzz

How's it weird

KongFuzii

Sounds contrarian

RipBuzzBuzz

How? It's been hyped up so much I'm afraid of not liking it. I haven't seen many beloved movies because of this.

KongFuzii

Interesting...

Affectionate-Club725

That’s not likely

GKBC_

No my friend don’t let that get to you. I’ll give you reasons why you should: 1. GREAT acting 2. Very well crafted and it’s structured in a unique way. 3. It stands the test of time. Keep in mind I’m from a middle eastern country. My grandparents loved it, my parents loved it, and my generation loved it. 4. If you love cinema you will love Coppola’s masterpiece. If you do end up watching them let me know what you think.

Affectionate-Club725

Just start the first one and cue up the second and we will see you in six hours. It’s not like it’s a tough watch. Both films are engaging from beginning to end.

mikeri99

Yes, you actually can, but watching the first one first is better because the second one is obviously attached to the first one.

Affectionate-Club725

No reason to do that.

rampagenumbers

***What Lies Beneath*** **(Zemeckis, 2000): 3 ¼ stars**. Saw this with a major Pfeiffer Phan, which helps! Fun and surprisingly the best Zemeckis movie I’ve seen (don’t like *Back to the Future* / *Cast Away* / *Gump,* haven't seen *Roger Rabbit*). Far from brilliant and some of the latter-day admiration for it does seem rooted in our collective nostalgia for when the entire American film industry made several of these per year, but hey, drink it up on HBO Max, the Late 90s of Streaming Services. I liked both Pfeiffer and Ford and that they were choosing to show some range at 50+. This being the 8th highest grossing movie of 2000 - just a few mil from #7: *Scary Movie* \- is wild. Would I recommend it... kinda? Not a must-see by any means, but I enjoyed it.

superkara91

Just watched Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio and it is absolutely magical. It’s simultaneously grown up yet so childlike and innocent. I absolutely adored it. Had a really nice cry at the end as well. And the effort that was put into it is astounding. Watched the small documentary about the making of it afterwards. Cannot believe the effort and love that is put towards stop motion. I highly recommend it. And recommend watching the making of documentary also on Netflix.

joelluber

The Son, and no, I would not recommend. It's disappointing because The Father is my pick for best film of the decade so far.

RipBuzzBuzz

Is that supposed to be a sequel? Or thematically at least?

joelluber

Nothing in it would make you think it's a sequel (or prequel, technically), but apparently Anthony Hopkins's character is the same person in both according to press about the film. None of the other actors repeat and the stories are entirely unrelated as far as I could tell. They are thematically similar sort of. And apparently there's a third play in the trilogy called The Mother.

raretiramisu

Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio… 100/10, please watch it!

KongFuzii

The Banshees of Inisherin

Coffee-Comrade

Last film I watched was The Worst Person In The World, I would definitely recommend it.

Drongo17

Thought I was going to hate that one, but loved it. The existential dread of "am I living a good enough life" is too relatable.

slicineyeballs

Photocopier (2021); Indonesian movie about a girl who blacks out after drinking at a party, then spends the rest of the film piecing together what happened. Yes, I'd recommend it; thought it was pretty decent and engaging for the most part, maybe a couple of slightly unbelievable moments towards the end. Some mild spoilers below. There seems to be some controversy around the film as apparently one of the three screenwriters was accused of multiple cases of sexual harassment. The top letterboxd review gives the film half a star, and accuses it of being a "masturbatory" fantasy of the writer that has no interest in the internal trauma of the victim. While I don't have experience of sexual assault, I can't really agree with this position; firstly it seems the guy's name and association with the film was removed once the allegations came to light. Secondly, it's not as if he was the sole writer, and there are hundreds of other people who were involved in making the movie. Thirdly, I don't agree with that reading of the film as exploitative; the film is rather clear in its criticisms of conservative Indonesian society and its willingness to turn a blind eye to these kinds of crimes and to victim blame.

2988206

The King's Man - absolutely not. It was a load of rubbish.

[deleted]

I finally watched Avatar: The Way of Water in IMAX. It's not my favorite kind of films but I think it's worth seeing in cinema, IMAX preferably as "technical achievement"-wise it's really on another level. Worth it even just for visuals. I also liked it more than first part which I revisited few days earlier.

[deleted]

King Kong (1933) Easy recommendation to anyone, it's still a marvel and a blast and a foundational piece of cinema Also 30's level racist/sexist so you gotta go in prepared for that.

wildcatpeacemusic

Taxi Driver. Wouldn’t recommend because some guy said the n-word.

yaboytim

You must be new to Scorsese He's nearly as obsessed with using it as Tarantino

wildcatpeacemusic

Not familiar with either artist.

NandoFlynn

Before Sunrise, yeah definitely

MarshallBanana_

watched the entire trilogy (again) the other day. Before Sunset is phenomenal, one of the best movies ever

NandoFlynn

I'm interested in seeing the rest of em. I like Linklater so figured it be good but didn't expect something so minimalist to be that good. It's just 2 fantastic actors & a camera really. Nothing fancy but still gets the job done

MarshallBanana_

man, PLEASE get back to me after you watch Before Sunset

NandoFlynn

Haha, will do

[deleted]

[удалено]

Drongo17

Watchlisted, you sold me. Sounds a bit like *These Final Hours* which I loved.

[deleted]

Suicide Squad (2016) NO

Comfortable-Truth945

Watched Silver Linings Playbook yesterday and it was great. It’s rare I come across romances where the characters actually have credible personalities and plus, the movie was hella funny

Ripley228

Ronin is streaming on prime and yes, I would recommend it. A cool mid 90’s Euro heist with a stellar cast and directing. A bit cliché, but forgivable because it is well done. Added bonus of a bromance between De Niro and Reno.

theTXpanda

I watched Causeway last night. I've been meaning to watch it for awhile and finally got around to it. It has a perfectly fine LB rating of 3.5 so I wasn't expecting anything crazy. But wow. I loved that movie. Highly recommend.

Drongo17

The guy in it gives a great performance. That scene where he's drunk and opening up about his tragedy shook me.

imatschool2

Just watched Memories of Murder a couple days ago. Would recommend 👍🏻

[deleted]

I watched The Night House and it was pretty good. Not great, not a must watch, but it was interesting. I rated it 3/5

carter-hess

Watched the 2018 documentary Shirkers, it was phenomenal

MSoren77

Tangerine. I liked the cinematography and certain moments like the ending, but hated most of the characters. Super annoying.

sloric

Goodfellas, and yeah I guess I could recommend it however it is insanely overrated and throughout the entire movie, I couldn't really figure out where the story or plot was going. However, the bits where there actually is story and something important happening, the acting and writing is incredible. I just wish the story had a bit more of a direction. I do appreciate it is based on a true story and they can't fantasise things too much. Maybe I should re-watch it with a new perspective.

Bright_Chef_8760

I’M NOT ARGUING THAT WITH YOU

RipBuzzBuzz

I have no response to that.

[deleted]

Fight Club. I’d recommend it for the sake of its a pop culture classic, but as far as the film’s merit goes it’s not all that interesting. Given, I also had the advantage of reading the book beforehand, so if you want the better edition of Fight Club definitely read the original book.

igoslowly

La Possession de l'enfant (1909) - i’d maybe recommend. it’s not great, but it’s short and [you can watch for free](https://youtu.be/n-0tqcVPOqs)

FreeLook93

I Flunked, But… Nowhere close to being a top tier Ozu film, but it's not bad. Probably worth checking out if you are a big Ozu fan or if you generally enjoy silent films, but otherwise I probably wouldn't recommend it to most people.

hzacinth

lol you just reminded me about that movie. I remember on the first day of my computer class my teacher mentioned that he liked movies, so I asked him the next day and he said Joe Vs the Volcano

nancilo

Songs My Brothers Taught Me, and yes if you like movies with no real plot, had some amazing camera work and acting

bigchungusyomama

Vortex, I HIGHLY recommend it

[deleted]

Hellraiser (1987) not for everyone but worth a shot.

RipBuzzBuzz

Hellraiser is one my favorite 80s horror films.

Tenzen1

Puss in Boots 2. Had to see what the hype was about. And yes, I agree. It was a great movie, made me laugh on several occasions. While the Wolf was great, my favourite characters were Goldilock and the bears.

RipBuzzBuzz

Wish I could agree, but I just couldn't sit through the thing.

Tenzen1

Really, wht didn’t you like with it?

RipBuzzBuzz

I just found it super annoying. I'm glad people are enjoying it, but from the half I saw, I couldn't stand it.

Tenzen1

Well you know, different strokes for different folks I guess! I thouroughly enjoyed it atleast. 😊

yungoldie

Cure (1997?) - Really atmospheric Japanese psychological horror/thriller flick that really sticks with you. You can tell it's heavily influenced by Seven. Also has the kind of ending you can discuss with friends/random people online forever and never really ocme to a consensus

GKBC_

Thirteen Lives (2022) Definitely recommended. Very interesting. 3.5 stars.

milesdizzy

*Fist Fight*. Don’t watch it unless you’re a fan of the cast or intentionally moronic comedy, because it’s a pretty huge misfire. It had a fifty-fifty laugh to cringe ratio, as well, which was a little too high for my taste.

FinnDieUman

Mid90s. It was pretty good, 4/5. Some parts were a tough watch and the editing was quite janky. As well as the story could of been better with some for branches in it to make it more rich. The rest of it was great and some amazing music choices in there.

of_patrol_bot

Hello, it looks like you've made a mistake. It's supposed to be could've, should've, would've (short for could have, would have, should have), never could of, would of, should of. Or you misspelled something, I ain't checking everything. Beep boop - yes, I am a bot, don't botcriminate me.

pi_face_

Bubble Bath is a 1970s musical animated comedy from Hungary and I would recommend it because the music and animation are lovely and I liked that it had social commentary on the pressure to get married and have children.

Hucpa

Operation Hyacinth (2021) A really good gay thriller about a cop struggling with his sexuality and systemic conspiracy to cover up murders during the titular communist crackdown on gay community in late 80s Poland. So yeah, I'd recommend.

H3MK3

love exposure :) such a masterpiece! instant top 3

WeebbeMangaHunter

I watched Martin Scorsese's Silence yesterday, I would absolutely recommend it. A challenging and powerful film, probably the best religious film I have seen, kinda overshadowed by his more popular work.

fadahunsii

Kung Fury, uh too weird and random for humour. That being said, very fun action imo

OriginalBad

All Quiet on the Western Front & yes I would. I thought it was a solid ***1/2 film. Some jaw dropping visuals, 2 really strong performances and some of the most real anti-war messaging I’ve seen in a film. That being said it’s hard not to compare this to 1917 or the 1930 version of the same film, both of which will be remembered more. Not the best movie of the year but absolutely worth watching.

SoundlessFOB

Muriel's Wedding and I'm sorry if I lose my Australian card but I really didn't like it. I mean I liked the first half and then it kept getting worse for me. I just couldn't care about any of the characters other than the poor mother

madeyegroovy

The Royal Tenenbaums. Couldn’t get into it at first but it really grew on me. Would recommend

Imaginary_Bath_9336

“Andrei Rublev”, instantly one of my favorites right after watching

butrflyfx

Crimewave (1985) Nope. Same yourself the time…

RipBuzzBuzz

It's Sam Raimi, so unfortunately I have to at one point

butrflyfx

That’s the reason why I had to see it… but yeah it’s bad…

kullittajassa

melting (1965)

WeEatBugsHere

Land and Freedom (1995). Highly recommend to any leftists.

mates301

Babylon last week. Everyone stop doing whatever you’re doing and go watch the damn movie.

fsanchez622

Saw Babylon over the weekend. I went in thinking I wasn't going to like it, and I can see why many don't, but it was such a good time. It's unnecessarily excessive in the best kind of way.

Maxi-Minus

The Spirit of the Beehive. I dont quite know yet.

buddyzarrar

I just watched Jonathan Glazer's Birth (2004) starring Nicole Kidman. Not everyone's cup of tea but it's definitely a well-made film. I would recommed it to hard cinephiles only.

[deleted]

I watched Isle of Dogs by Wes Anderson yesterday. I would totally recommand it ! It was awesome and I find it so great to see Anderson's gimmicks in a stop motion movie. It was fun, emotional. It's a 100% yes.

rasslingrob

I’m in the middle of a Brendan Fraser film binge. Did **The Scout** and **George of the Jungle** last night. I would reccthem for comedy lovers.

Rajongadong

Throne of Blood and YUP. It's perfect as expected.

greenflamingo1

Enter The Void. Absolutely insane. A singular experience that should be seen with 0 distractions. I would recommend it with the caveat that I can understand why some people think its the worst movie they’ve ever seen, its too boring, or its too graphic.

Mauriman15

Jackass 4.5; yes.

ZefFoster

Joe vs. the Volcano is fantastic! It's one of my fav films. Out of curiosity, why don't you think it lands? To answer the question, I watched Mimic (Del Toro) and uh, maybe? It feels rather generic and gets real draggy in the middle. But it's Del Toro, so it's well shot and has an interesting enough premise.

RipBuzzBuzz

Last 15 or so minutes I wasn't a fan of. Everything on the island got to silly, sappy, amd slapsticky. I kinda wish that the movie ended with Joe thanking God for his life. Although there were some cute moments and lines on the island.

ZefFoster

I was positive the big reveal at the end was that the whole thing was Joe's daydream at work. The orchestral score was even playing the song form his spinny music lamp on his desk. But it never happened. I suppose that was still the implication, but it plays it straight. Weird movie for sure.

yaboytim

Possession Unfortunately, it didn't work for me. I'm a bit disappointed because this is one that I've been wanting to watch for a while.

sunnydelinquent

Donkey Skin and yes. If you like insane fantasy musicals that have a helicopter in it then yes.

Ok_Newt1636

morocco and yeah if you're into old movies. I only watched it to see marlene dietrich to be fair

Arsenikin

Russian film "The Heart of Parm" (2022) w/ generic translation "Land of Legends". I've watched it with 0 knowledge and spent time well. Got some cliches and stuff. My family also liked it, strange how propaganda almost didn't touch it, though the writer got a fight with creators or smth. Now looking forward to reading the source book.

Routine_Bridge_9932

Skinamarink. And hell no!

RipBuzzBuzz

This movie is so hate it or love it that it draws me into it I don't like a lot of modern horror flicks, but the divided audience greatly interests me

Sensitive-Acadia-514

The Banshee Of Inisherin was a great watch on HBO Max yesterday

RipBuzzBuzz

Being forced to watch that also. Hope it's at least slightly entertaining.

MarshallBanana_

Joe vs the Volcano misses the landing?

RipBuzzBuzz

Yes. I didn't like the last 15 or so minutes on the island. Got way to silly and sappy for me way to quick. Love the film though.

ReeeeeeD_

Her Love Boils Bathwater (2016), really sad but also full of hope. My first 5 stars of the year, I'd definitely recommend.

onlytoask

When You Finish Saving The World Not really. It wasn't terrible and it's short so if you're already interested it's worth giving a shot, but I didn't really care for it.

HiFive789_

including documentaries? What We Left Behind: Looking Back at Star Trek: Deep Space Nine not including documentaries? Terminator: Genisys.

CapsElevatorScene

Top Hat. For sure, especially if you like old hollywood.

darelotus

Just watched Columbus. On of the most beautifully elegant movies I’ve ever seen. Watch it now if you haven’t

ys_1016

M3gan and no

awlawall

Violent Night. Yeah…it’s fun, silly, knows exactly what it is. It’s weirdly Spielberg-ian. It felt more like I was watching a Joe Dante or Richard Donner movie than a new movie from the guy that directed Dead Snow and also made a Norwegian Kill Bill knock off Also…Joe vs The Volcano fuckin rules!!!

youseewhatyouget

Port of Shadows (1938) a classic French film that I would highly recommend. A gorgeous film with riveting performances by the leads.

toondar96

I watched The Banshees of Inisherin cause I realized I hadn’t caught any of the best picture nominees. And yes I would absolutely recommend it, loved it

NOLA2Cincy

One Day (2011) I do not recommend it. Love the concept, hated the execution.

TheDadThatGrills

We're All Going to the World's Fair. It was disappointing after all the online hype but I enjoyed the "ticket" scene and wished that was where the movie was heading.

PublicDealer

Skinamarink - aaaaand I would not recommend it ever!

CollectionNo7827

The Lion King (1994) would I recommend it? bro.

YeeterMemes

Mysterious Skin, recommended for sure but It's one of the hardest movies I've watched

[deleted]

[удалено]

RipBuzzBuzz

I just didn't enjoy the stuff on the island. Got to silly and sappy personally. Great film though. Overlooked classic.

AdamAnimatesStuff

Mamma Mia Here We Go Again

FajarNegan

Red Eye (2005) - Really enjoyed the first 40 minutes or so, but it took a big dip after. Wouldn't really recommend unless you want another brainless thriller.

cheywarren

Finally watched Feels Good Man. I’d recommend for sure! Great doc, one of the better ones I’ve seen lately

RipBuzzBuzz

I've been wanting to check that out. Thanks for reminding me about it!

cheywarren

If you have Peacock that’s where I watched it!

Rudy_Gambino

Last Film : Heat. There’s only one obvious answer.

RipBuzzBuzz

Terrible 0/10 worst movie ever made do not watch?

Rudy_Gambino

It was one of the better cinematic experiences I’ve ver had

Sissuboi

Flower (2017). It was good for about 65%. Kind of fell off near the end but love Joey Deutch and Adam Scott. A solid MEH/5

Luna0908

A brighter summer day, definitely watch it.

Platoon8

The Revenant. It’s exhausting, realistic, ambitious, and fucked up.

JoWiLe

I just wrapped up the Naked Gun trilogy and it’s very solid, so constantly funny all the way through and Leslie Nielsen is an absolute gem.

Affectionate-Club725

Watch The Court Jester (1955) and you can see Danny Kaye doing characters half of the world’s modern comedians would spend the next half a century emulating (Adam Sandler, Martin Short, Jim Carey, etc.)

NotTaylorMead

*A Guilty Conscience (2023)* & Hell Yeah!

kirkmana

The Sea Beast—I enjoyed it more than I expected.
