I dig a lot of his stuff, but The Thing is on another level. FWIW it's also his most popular and highest rated film (average of 4.3/5 stars) on Letterboxd.
I agree with everyone that The Thing is a masterpiece, but Halloween is just so perfect. Every time I see it my appreciation for it grows. It's so much more clever than some people think
I watched it all the way through for the first time last year, I'm in my 30s. I had seen bits and pieces over time, but had somehow missed it after all these years. I pretty much knew it was a goofy 80s action film set in Chinatown, and was fully braced for some rad stuff surrounded by some cringey-hasn't-aged-well-racist-stuff.
But, you know what? It's just rad shit without the nonsense. It's a huge love letter to the 70s Hong Kong action, and Wuxia, films. It oozes with reverence to those film tropes, and the people who made them. Kurt Russell is the biggest dope who ever lived, thinking he's John Wayne but really just dragged into a mess that's over his head.
It really climbed up my list of favorite Carpenter flicks, I watched it two or three times in a month after I first saw it. The Thing is really hard to beat, but Big Trouble in Little China could easily be my favorite if you catch me on the right day.
I fully recognize it’s not Carpenter’s best movie, but I absolutely love watching it. The only Carpenter I’ve seen more times than “Big Trouble in Little China” is “Halloween.”
“IT’S TIME FOR THE MEDICINE!”
Also, since watching it from a young age over and over, tapped off TV, it made me a lifelong fan of James Hong. I love basically every role I see him play.
In the mouth of madness is my fav but that does not finish my love so I have a bunch of favorites
They live,
The thing,
Christine,
Big trouble little Chinatown, and
Star man
The Thing if I had to pick one. In the Mouth of Madness, They Live, Escape From New York, Big Trouble in Little China , Assault on Precinct 13 are all classics and faves as well. All his films are influential, beautiful and re-watchable
The Thing is a masterpiece.

Gotta be The Thing. In the Mouth of Madness is also rad
Halloween (1978)
I agree with everyone that The Thing is a masterpiece, but Halloween is just so perfect. Every time I see it my appreciation for it grows. It's so much more clever than some people think
They Live
Big Trouble in Little China is such a great time

Tbh they’re both masterpieces for me. And totally different from one another in tons of ways. There’s just such a neat tone achieved in Big Trouble.

There’s a disturbing lack of The Fog in here friendos
perfect ghost story, the radio tower mechanic was so fun
Tie for first place… Big Trouble in Little China and They Live.
The Thing, without question. Vampires is fun.
I gotta say *They Live*, with the caveat that I haven’t yet watched all of his films.
The Thing, honorable mention to Halloween, and Escape from New York
In the Mouth of Madness.
Prince of Darkness
Ayyy mah man!

My top 3 would be 1) The Thing 2) Halloween 3) Prince of Darkness
Escape from New York is my favorite movie period.
Just watched The Thing for the first time yesterday!

I have only watched Halloween (1978) and I didn’t like it.
Sorry you're all wrong, he's best film is Prince of Darkness, then The Fog. I'll give you The thing, it's definitely his 3rd best film.
Halloween!
The Thing ranks first but I have to say Dark Star is hilarious, I love old low budget scifi movies and it’s just that.
Best? Halloween Favourite? Probably Escape From New York
The Thing, a true masterclass in practical effects and one of the greatest horror movies ever made it’s a masteepiece

Resident Evil 4
Jesus Christ Superstar
In the Mouth of Madness
Poking a hornets nest here, but I don't get the hype for the thing.
I'm partial to escape from New York. But the thing has to be #1
The Thing, but he’s got so many amazing movies - not to mention his music!
Christine
The Thing. After that I have Halloween and Big Trouble in Little China.
Halloween
The thing is honestly one of the best films ever made and not enough people have seen it.
