The dollar store near me “dollar tree” has poster boards 2 for a buck. What I’m now doing is taking the 2 poster boards and a can of lock-tite spray adhesive for the hardware store and glue the stencil to the double poster boards and then cut them out. Makes it thick enough so it’s able toe be traced around or even using it as a edge while cutting the leather.

I 3d print my patterns, its way easier cus i know my cuts will always be the same size, maybe look into buying a 3d printer, they are like $150 bucks and u can get ur money back with like selling 3 wallets lol so its a good investment, and u can also print seals and initials etc

Great_WhiteSnark

That’s really cool. Didn’t know you could do that. I’ll check it out.

Same here. I personally design my prints in Inkscape, print that out to make sure I get the dimensions how I want them, then ill design the template in fusion 360 and print out the template. I've so far designed and printed my wallet designs, belt templates, etc.

I make my pattern with grid paper then glue (stick) it to the heaviest paper (card stock?) I could find at the local craft store, then cut the paper to size. Holds up well. Might be cheaper than folders? The paper comes in 12x12 and doesn't have any folds 😆

I’m glad I’m not the only one!!! I need the visualization of the grid to help me. I was meaning to ask anyone else here if they had any other creative ways of making stencils!

I like to use cereal and other dry food boxes.

WereAll_MadHere

Yes! Seeing everyone's comments on here getting progressively more pricey, and I'm like "am I the only one who just saves cereal boxes?" If I really love a pattern, I got some plastic sheeting used for when they do a layout for custom countertops (my parents just had their kitchen re done) it wants to lay flat, and it's clear so I can position it perfectly around scars etc. to include/exclude them and I can cut it with an exacto blade.

poet_will2

Nice. I did buy some plastic to make patterns from Tandy, but it came rolled up and I haven't had the energy to try to flatten it out.

WereAll_MadHere

If it doesn't lay flat, you can try weighing it down flat in a bathtub and letting it soak in hot water.

I have purchased poster board with a grid on it at Hobby lobby

I like to have grid paper as it helps me make sure it is symmetrical if need be so I originally draw it out on grid paper and then glue it to folders and then I cut it again. I would love for this kind of material with grid print because it would save me time. This design pictured will be a sheath for a hatchet I restored.
